[NEWS] Verizon FiOS Skyrockets to #1 in Netflix ISP Streaming Rankings

Congrats FiOS.   Maybe it was worth the wait, maybe it wasn't. But it, according to Netflix and it's subscribers, was well executed.

[NEWS] Verizon FiOS Skyrockets to #1 in Netflix ISP Streaming Rankings
Netflix's latest ISP streaming performance rankings continues to show specific and pointed improvements for companies that have struck interconnection deals with the company
Verizon FiOS jumped nine spots to top the index with a speed of 3.17 Megabits per second (Mbps.) The rapid rise, which began last month, followed an interconnection agreement with the company that uncongested ports for mutual customers. Similar arrangements with Time Warner Cable and AT&T U-Verse also resulted in increased speeds in September of 2.87 Mbps and 2.77 Mbps respectively.
The improvements were enough to propel Verizon FiOS to the top among the nation's largest ISPs at 3.17 Mbps per second. Among all ISPs, Verizon FiOS comes in seventh place behind Google Fiber (3.54 Mbps), Grande Communications (3.33 Mbps) and RCN (3.24). It's worth noting while jumping just one spot, Verizon DSL customers continue to see the slowest streaming performance of nearly all ISPs ranked, including other DSL providers.
Again, you can head here to see the ranking of all ISPs in the US or other countries where Netflix streaming is available.

For what it's worth, I've been getting remarkable good Netflix feeds for the last few months.  Before that, Netflix was often at a low resolution and subject to frequent buffering if not outright loss of data.
In short, I've seen a big improvement that makes watching Netflix on FiOS enjoyable!
Enjoy.

  • Airport Express/AirTunes Not Working with New Verizon FIOS Connection

I was just set up with the new Verizon FIOS high speed internet, and now my Airport Express/AirTunes will not connect to my remote speakers like it did previously. The option for them is still there on iTunes, however when I select them, I get the horizontal barber pole for a minute, then the speaker selction goes back to computer.
    In more detail:
Previously I had a Comcast internet connection which went through a Linksys wireless router. My Mini picked up the internet with this connection. Then I had an Airport Express hooked up to some remote speakers. They worked fine. Now, I have the Verizon wireless router hooked in directly to my Mini through the ethernet cable. I see the wireless network created by the Verizon router. I still see the wireless network created by the Linksys router. However, my iTunes can not connect to my AE/AirTunes speakers.
Note, I did reset the AE and then using Airport Setup Assistant, tried to locate it again, but it came up with nothing (other than my neighbor's new Verizon router).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Still no luck. The green light is on for the AE.
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • No Incoming Calls on my New Verizon FIOS phone

Just swicthed my home phone number from Another VOIP base vendor and home TV from Dish to FIOS, after amazing product details and promis of cerdit of 100$ ATM card.
    First Issue:
No one in my friends can call me now except those who are already on Verizon Network,  Not acceptable, Tried to call VZ on the phone no luck, Chat agent is not available for this service.
    Second Issue:
NO one can tell me in VZ how i will get my credit for switching to FIOS, the number they gave me simply mention that its for new customer and hangup, No sure what needs to be done here.
Posting on this Fourm to see is any one else has the same issue
    Ahsan

As it happens, I switched to Verizon's bundle from Time Warner a few days ago.  I opted to transfer my phone number so I could keep the old one. According to the Verizon order entry process, that number was transferable.
After a somewhat rocky switch over (that's another story), I found I have the same problem. Incoming calls within the Verizon
network work fine, but callers from outside the Verizon network are told by a recorded message that they've reached a
    non working number.
I got a trouble report in via the web, as a human operator was impossible to reach. .... Still waiting for a resolution.

  • Need help with Airport Extreme and my new Verizon Fios Internet connection

I just got the Fios install, and the tech and I couldn't figure out how to use my Airport Extreme as my wireless connection. I'm not real tech savvy (and I've only been a Mac guy for about 18 months). My current arrangement is the basic Verizon setup with the Airport out of the loop. How can I go about moving from here back to using my Airport Extreme? I need the range! Thanks in advance for your help.

Have you tried resetting and reconfiguring the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?
Are you using OS 10.5 or OS 10.4 or earlier?
Are you using the round 802.11b/g AEBS or the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS?
If you are using OS10.5 OR the square 802.11b/g/n AEBS you should refer to "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility" (direct PDF link).
Otherwise you should refer to "Designing AirPort Extreme Networks" (direct PDF link).

  • Verizon Fios and Airport not working. PLEASE HELP!

Ok, so I have been trying to get my Airport Extreme and Express to work with my new verizon fios service for about 5hours now. incrediably frustrating becasue with my old service provider it took about 5min.
Here is what i need to do.
extend the fios network using my airport extreme. I need to wirelessly print and use it in my office which is far away from the Verizon MI24WR router. cords are not an option. I need this to be wireless.
I also need to extend my network downstairs to my airport express in order to use itunes to wirelessly listen to music on my speakers.
I have tried other things described in message boards but I need both the extreme and express to be wirelessly connected to the verizon router. Is this possible and if so how! Please explain in the simplest of terms.

  • Port-forwarding or UPnP on VERIZON FIOS modem/router

I'm trying to help someone access his home network remotely from another location. he just got the new Verizon FIOS network.
i'm new to the world of port-forwarding and UPnP forwarding, but have learned a lot in a short period of time.
I can easily setup port-forwarding and UPnP forwarding (necessary to setup the afp file sharing, screen sharing, etc) on Linksys routers that have those capabilities.
My friend just got the new Verizon FIOS network installed. It is smoking fast both up and down. We figured out that the box Verizon provided him (it's a fairly huge thing) is an internet modem, a router, and a wireless router all in one.
And once we accessed its control panel, I definitely saw places where we could configure port-forwarding........
but it's not quite as straightforward as it is on a Linksys router in that, on a Linksys, if I want to open a specific port, like 5900, for screen sharing, I can easily type in the numbers 5900 and type the IP address of the computer on my LAN that I wish to forward port 5900 traffic to.......or I can do this with UPnP forwarding....either way it is simply and fully controllable.
But on this Verizon box, it seems to have most standard ports and protocols stored in presets that you must choose from. For example, if I wanted to setup port forwarding for FTP traffic, I would choose FTP from the dropdown menu and then the router would automatically know to forward port 21 to the computer of my choice.
but we specifically want to turn on AFP for apple file sharing, which is port 548. On the Linksys, i could simply type port 548. But this Verizon router does not show a service called AFP. It has a nice LONG menu of many different pre-set options, but AFP is not one of them. Would it be called something else on a device like this that is obviously not specifically designed to know Apple's file sharing protocol?
So would anyone know what kind of service I should look for that opens port 548 for file sharing?
Anyone have experience with these new Verizon routers/modems yet? I'd really love to find a way to type everything in manually, but I dunno if that's possible on this unit.
i know there's a lot here. thank you to anyone who knows about this and can shed some light

That doesn't work because applications that initiate outbound connections are given randomly assigned 5-digit port numbers (e.g., 49144) through which the CLIENT communicates. The "well known" port numbers like 548 for afp, 22 for ssh, 80 for web servers, etc., are for the SERVER function to which the server daemon listens. Example: you don't send the request to download your email from your pop 110 (or 995 when using SSL), or from your imap 143 (or 993 when using SSL); that's the port number at the DESTINATION server to where your traffic is delivered, i.e., the port to which that SERVER is listening for incoming traffic. Same for when you send mail, you send from some randomly assigned five-digit port number TO the smtp server's port 25. You can see this by launching Terminal.app from an admin-privileged account and typing sudo tcpdump -i en1 (use en1 for airport, en0 for wired ethernet) and looking at the packet transmissions' headers.

  • Setting up New Airport Extreme with Verizon Fios Actiontec MI-424-WR Modem

I just purchased the new Airport Extreme to run my network at home. My internet provider is Verizon Fios. With their installs, they use an Actiontec MI424WR modem/router. I would like to disable the router part of the Actiontec and use the AEBS for my router. Any advice on how to accomplish this? Thanks.

ufbrad24, Welcome to the discussion area!
FiOS does not require a modem. The Actiontec device is a router only.
You could replace the Actiontec completely with the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Many have discovered that this can be done by a quick call to Verizon.

  • When I open my free aol email account, I keep getting redirected to a new open tab ad for Verizon Fios. Is there a way to block this in Firefox?

I tried SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes but they didn't solve the problem. AOL email is the only place I'm having this problem and it's constantly happening while I have that email open. It will open up the same new tab time after time. Screen shot jpg will not upload but it shows 3 tabs for "FiOS Custom TV" with the following address - http://campaign.verizon.com/customizetv/?CMP=BAC-CON_2015-Q2_MM-ACQ-MZ2ACQQuizP3a_0576
    Help?

I access my aol email through www.aol.com. When I got to my emails, another tab was automatically opening by itself and I was redirected to that newly opened tab with the page that had the Verizon Fios promotion/ad. This happened automatically and repetitively while I was trying to check my emails. (Note the multiple Verizon tabs in the screenshot attached to this inquiry)
This happened over the last 2 days while in my free aol email account. I did notice a Verizon ad at the top of my email inbox while this was happening. I never did click on or otherwise access the Verizon ad but was constantly redirected to the new page/tab while viewing my emails. I went to my aol email just now to see if this was still occurring; there is a different ad in place of the Verizon ad and I am no longer being automatically redirected to another tab/page. Don't know why it was happening when the Verizon ad was there but it's not happening now since the Verizon ad has been replaced with another ad from a different company.
    Any thoughts on this?
    thank you

    Additional Information.
On my Mail Accounts setup it was set to "verizon.net" on incoming.

This came up automatically ....  I did not do it and I cannot change it

  • New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, etc

New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, switch channel from auto to maybe 6,channel width to 20mhz? Already changed security settings to WPA2.  Currently router is running in mixed b and g mode.

If you have one computer running on G they will all run on G. All ROUTERS are backward compatible, in otherwords if you have a group of computers and all of them are N compatible and one or two are G They will all work but the N computers will run at N and those that are G will run at G speed not N.
It can get confusing but really it is simple. The newest is 802.11 AC and ic used with the newest Mac Computers made available in November 2013. So if you have the newest Airport Extreme that is 802.11ac and the newest computers that are AC compliant your speed will be 5 times faster than anything on the market right now.

  • How to set up Verizon Fios on new computer

how do I set up verizon fios internet on my new computer.  I have the antena from the old computer. I do not see a wireless router like I used to have

It's not clear to me exactly what your problem is but it sounds like your new computer just doesn't have a WiFi network card.  Is it a desktop or laptop PC?   If a desktop, that's likely the issue...no WiFi NIC.
If that's the case, you need to either connect your PC to your FiOS router via Ethernet cable, or you need to add a WiFi card to the PC.
If I'm misunderstanding your issue, and your new machine is a laptop, can you be more specific about what steps you've taken that aren't working?  What are you looking to do with that old antenna?

  • Airport Express and Verizon Fios - setup problem

we recently converted to Verizon Fios - the airport express (used to play music through a stereo) stopped working and is no longer recognized (continuous blinking amber with "no configured station etc")- i have read through older solutions and many deal with different versions of the station or of Airport Utility - my Airport Express is Model A1264 - the Airport Utility is 6.3.1.4 - the OS X is 10.8.3 -
the Verizon Router has the following: (codes left out)
Actiontec number (ending in rev.1 - is this the model #?)
    User name = admin
    password
    ISSID
    WPA2 key
    WPS pin
    Wan Mac
the ISSID (5 digitt alpha and numeric) and the WPA2 Key (16 digit alpha & numeric) have been used to log on all wifi devices in the house (eg iphone/ ipad, streaming netflix) and worked
    any assistance greatly appreciated

i did read your post and had already tried a hard reset - several times - i have done it again to no avail - however i have done the following
    - i have 3 iMacs - one in the next room to where the main one is (the one i am having trouble with) and another in another part of the house with no wifi service - i took the Air Exp and plugged it in next to the iMac furthest away - it was found in seconds
    - i next tried it on the iMac in the next room - it was found - the Utility indicated it was examing the station then it wanted me to set up a new network which it named using my name and Airport Express - it asked for a new password - i gave it to it - THEN it wanted me to plug an ethernet cable into the airport express!! which i can't do - that is why it was being used wirelessly - i can't seem to get past that point
    - the main Imac still will not find the Air Esp station - if i can get the one in the bext room to work the airport express i can transfer the music to it and play from there

  • New to Fios: Schedules Recordings and DVR Capacity

I just gave up on RCN in lieu or Verizon Fios and thus far - can't stand the dvr.
    1) The capacity is no where near what RCN's was. I had days worth of TV, movies, etc saved and never ran out of space. With Verizon, it's been less than a week and I`m already half full. I don't have a HD TV, but I`m wondering if my lack of space is caused by the recorder taping in HD. How do I check this setting to ensure that everything being recorded is standard definition?
    2) The Verizon DVR is really bad at only keeping two episodes of a show, and only recording new/first run shows. Is there any setting to make this work better? I tried to set it to record first runs only of the show scrubs, on any channel (i wasnt sure what channel the new ones are run on) and in two days it taped 10 episodes...

The FiOS DVR has the same 160GB capacity as the RCN DVR.
SD channels are 0-499 and HD channels are 500+.  All the SD local channels can be found under 50.
Recordings from HD channels consume 3-6x the capacity of SD channels.

  • Pros and Cons of Verizon FiOS TV vs Comcast

I recently (two weeks ago) switched from Comcast to Verizon FiOS TV in the Portland, OR area and I have mixed feelings about it.  There are several things that are better, but also many that are worse than Comcast.
I'll get the bad things out of the way... and maybe I'm wrong about a few of them:
    CONS
-- My most expensive Mitsubishi TV that has worked fine on everthing via HDMI for the past 6 months (Comcast Motorola HD DVR, PS3, Wii, Wireless Media Extender) will not work via HDMI with the Verizon Motorola STB.  Green screen of death.  I don't have any optical audio cables, so I'm currently running with component cables and regular audio (which sucks).  This is horrible.
-- Changing channels sometimes doesn't work.  This happens when I'm flipping through channels using the Channel +/- buttons.  I'll hit + and the on screen display will say it has changed channels, but the previous channel's video and audio are still on the screen.  I have to change to the next channel and back again to get it to synch up.  This happens a lot.
-- The DVR skip buttons are nearly worthless to the impatient (read: me).  If you hit the skip button too fast, it either doesn't skip at all or causes the video to go blank.  On my other TV which is working via HDMI, this makes it have a green screen of death and I have to turn the TV off and back on.  This is a big deal for me.  I'm used to hitting the skip button quickly a set number of times to skip past known lenghts of commercial breaks.  I simply can't do that with Verizon.  I have to hit the skip, wait a couple of seconds, hit the skip again, wait a couple of seconds, hit the skip again, oops... it didn't skip... I must not have waited long enough, hit skip again.  THIS IS INFURIATING.
-- If I have rewound back into a certain channel's buffer, as far as I can tell there is no way to immediately return to live TV.  Comcast's remote had a LIVE button that would skip to the end of the buffer without clearing it.  The only way I've figured out to do it is change channels then come back to the original channel, but this sometimes clears the buffer so that isn't acceptable.
-- I can't adjust the end time of an already recording program.  This comes up frequently, especially with sporting events and programs that have been delayed because of sporting events preceding them.  I'll sit down in the middle of a show and start playing the recording from the beginning but notice the basketball game before it is still finishing.  I want to extend the end time of the recording so I can start watching it immediately from the end of the basketball game and not have to worry about whether it will be in the buffer or not.
-- If I have two succesive shows set to record, there are several seconds dropped between the two shows in the recordings.  Comcast would miss one maybe two seconds... Verizon misses almost 10.  Why does this matter?  Well, sometimes shows run a little long and with Comcast I would be guaranteed to see the end of that program on the beginning of the next recording.  Not so with Verizon.  For example, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.  Frequently the "moment of zen" at the end of The Daily Show is a few seconds after the end time of the show.  I could always see it at the beginning of the Colbert Report recording with Comcast. Now it is completely gone on the Verizon recordings.  South Park always runs several seconds long, but now I miss the end of every episode because it's not at the beginning of the Reno 911 recording.  THIS IS REALLY INFURIATING.
-- Whether or not a show is New is not easily discernable from the guide.  The "New" icon needs to be one of the ones that show up in the guide listing, not just the info screen.  Having to hit the Info button to tell if a show is new or not really annoys me.
-- The DVR does not offer to automatically extend the end time for live events as Comcast's did.  I have to go through several annoying steps to extend the end time.
    PROS
-- I can record sporting events as a series, which Comcast didn't let me do.  This is great!  I no longer have to go through the guide and manually record English Premier League, Champions League or MLS games.  I just set up series recordings.  This, I REALLY like.
-- The channel selection is way better (more HD, more music, more sports)
-- I don't have to buy the entire latin language channel package just to get Gol TV which has english audio too.  THANK YOU!
-- The series recordings do a much better job with cable shows that repeat a gazillion times a week than Comcast's did.  I couldn't even set many cable shows to be series recordings on Comcast or it would fill up my DVR.  THIS IS EXCELLENT.
-- Changing what series are being recorded or their priority doesn't cause all the shows you removed from the recording schedule to magically appear back in the schedule to be recorded like Comcast's DVR does.  THIS ROCKS.
So, there are several things I like a lot better than Comcast but there are also many things I hate about Verizon so far.  Coupled with the fact that my FiOS router just stopped working last night (blinking red light) requiring a new router to be sent meaning I'll have no internet all weekend (I'm at work right now), the fact that they still haven't buried the fiber and the fact that the installer lied to me about the green screen of death on my Mitsubishi, I'm seriously second guessing my decision to switch.

Yeah that's exactly why HBO says no HD On Demand, even though it makes zero sense since it's no different than watching a regular HD broadcast. I don't find it too big of a deal though considering all of the HD HBO channels Fios has combined with HBO airing everything a million times a week. Plus, if it keeps HBO from putting those annoying logos and banners like the other premium channels (Starz, Showtime, etc.) then I'm fine with it. If I'm paying extra money for a channel, it shouldn't have those in my opinion. HBO and Fios will have to add more HD On Demand for free relatively soon in order to stay competitive. It should be an easy thing for them to do.
The SD picture is better with a 7216 DVR than the 6416 DVRs. I also switched from Comcast and the SD picture with my 7216 is very noticeably better than Comcast's boxes, so I'd try playing around with your settings or switching to a 7216 box if you don't have one. Almost everybody I've talked to thinks their SD picture is better than comcast's. Mine, although not as clear as HD obviously, isn't pixelated or blurry at all. Even G4, a channel owned by Comcast, is greatly improved over Comcast's signal. G4 on Comcast was almost unwatchable it was so pixelated. Since Fios is fiber, they don't hav e to compress and degrade the signal as much as Comcast does .
