Newsgroups

Come home tonight to find I cannot access Newsgroups on usenet (news.btinternet.com)
I believe it because according to my hub I have got a new IP address in the last few hours.
It would seem to me that this IP address is somehow unknown to the news server and therefore it won't let me onto the newsgroups.
I could reset hub untill I get a working IP address but how can BT forget to register new IP address with whoever runs their news servers?
Is it something worth reporting as when having previous problems ages ago I was told by the Indian help desk that BT don't support news groups which is ironic really as theres a help page saying all about them at

Hi. Welcome to the forums.
There are a few IP ranges that have this issue I'm afraid. When BT had webspace, an IP address range was never added to the firewall, despite numerous requests for 6 years!
I was told that when a new IP range was added to the pool, there was a "tick sheet" of items to check, including the now defunct webspace ftp access and newsgroup access (using giganews). It appears that this tick sheet has not been followed. Unfortunately the helpdesk don't seem to know all the products in use - hence they perhaps are uncertain of where to raise the issue.

  • In Thunderbird, I cannot send email. I am asked to enter an email address in Mail and Newsgroup Account settings but when I click on this option, nothing opens.

    I can connect to Thunderbird and receive email. However, I cannot send emails. When I press send (either from replying to an email or entering an email address manually) I get the following error message:
    Sending of message failed.
    No sender specified. Please fill in your email address in the Mail & Newsgroup Account settings.
    When I click on the menu option within the email message Tools/Mail & Newsgroup, the message minimises and the programme returns me to my inbox. There is no Mail & Newsgroup setting on the mail programme.

  • Problem with subscribing to newsgroups....

    I've just been to the newsgroup URL - http://java.sun.com/aboutJava/newsgroups.html
    but when I clicked on the links the newsgroup was added to my list in Outlook Express but it came up with an error message saying Server not found....
    Any handy hints?

    Consult the manual / help files of your browser and / or news reader. This has nothing to do with Java.

  • Newsgroup reorganization + New AL BPM Suite Product Center on Dev2Dev

    Hi,
    As you've probably noticed, we've reorganized the BPM newsgroups a little - cutting down on the dozen or two that we had (aqualogic.business.service.*), leaving just five:
    aqualogic.bpm.general
    aqualogic.bpm.modeling (renamed old .project.development)
    aqualogic.bpm.runtime
    aqualogic.bpm.administration (renamed old .bpm.administration)
    aqualogic.bpm.development (renamed old .service.papi)
    We hope this makes it easier for everyone to monitor and contribute. At the same time, we've created a new AquaLogic BPM Suite Product Center on Dev2Dev:
    http://dev2dev.bea.com/albpm/
    Regards,
    Jon
    PS. Here's our intent for the newsgroups:
    * aqualogic.bpm.general
    - announcements, concepts, foundations
    * aqualogic.bpm.modeling
    - process modeling, simulation, importing models, modeling tips
    * aqualogic.bpm.runtime
    - performance, scalability, architecture, monitoring, J2EE
    * aqualogic.bpm.administration
    - installation, deployment, automation, configuration, directory[ALIP]
    * aqualogic.bpm.development
    - process management, version control, configuration

    some newsgroups were renamed, others were archived.
    the screenflows newsgroup (via NNTP) is not available anymore, you should refer to the new names if you want to access via NNTP.
    People reading via RSS should not change anything since the URLs are based on the internal id and not by name.

    AquaLogic BPM 5.7 SP1 is now available!

  • How to give the link to specific post in this newsgroup?

    Hi everybody.
    I run to a situaion when I wanted to give a link to some earlier posts in this newsgroup, but I did not know how .
    There is a long line in address field in my IE and it is to my personl setting I guess. What I shell do to give somebody a link to specific posr?
    thanks in advance
    Pawel

    I believe you are wanting to just provide a link to another newsgroup? If so, you can just copy and paste the address into your response. Also, you can use HTML code to make it look nicer. For example, I can use the following address:
    http://exchange.ni.com/servlet/ProcessRequest?RHIVEID=101&RPAGEID=135&HOID=5065000000080000008F550000&UCATEGORY_0=_49_%24_6_&UCATEGORY_S=0
    Or, you can use simple HTML code within your posting. The format in this case is display text .
    So, for example, I could also have a link LIKE THIS which will take you to a page also. Refer to This Page for more of the simple HTML commands you can use.

  • Newsgroups Server Error Message 480

    I have recently moved over to Sky broadband, but retained my mailbox with BT premium mail. But I seem to have lost my access to newsgroups with the error message below.
    Are they only available to BT broadband customers, if yes what alterntives are suggested?

    As you are no longer with BT Broadband, you will not be able to use my personal help website, as its restricted to BT Broadband or BT Wifi users.
    I would advice that you ask on the Sky forums, as they are now your ISP.

  • Urgent question: forum or newsgroup?

    I am trying to convince Spanish speaking users "from the other side" (ex MM forums in Spanish) to post here their opinions about the changes that are almost here, but have not been succesful. All of them do not use browsers as such to access the forums, and they seem convinced that they are participating, not in a forum, but in a newgroup, housed but not controlled by Adobe. In fact, in the topic lists they are identified as "newsgroup users" while browser users are identified by their screen names.
    One of the oldest and most respected participants there has just posted a message in which he states that NNTP users do not access those forums through the Adobe site, so they don't need an Adobe ID, just an email address which doesn't even have to be a real or existing one.
    I find this strange, as it would discriminate against those of us using normal browser access. I cannot post in there if I'm not a registered Adobe user, and that means that at some stage I have to provide a valid email address, an identificator (the Adobe ID), and a screen name. But he insists that they don't have to register and have never done.
    Could someone please clarify this matter for me?

    A bit of history from an old and current NNTP user (FidoNet, Usenet, and other private news servers).<br /><br />[Edit: The newsgroups Claudio was asking about] are hosted on forums.macromedia.com. They were in use and very active years before Macromedia added that nasty FuseTalk Web application. No login was ever required to read and post to that server. You can point your newsreader application to that server, download its list of newsgroups, and begin reading/posting in any group. <br /><br />The Web application simply reads from, and posts to the news server - munging code and message headers along the way. But if you want to use the Web access, you do have to use a login. If you never registered software at the former Macromedia site, you would need to create a new login for this. (I don't recommend it.) Or they may have had a separate login, I don't recall, exactly.<br /><br />Adobe has a separate NNTP server, adobeforums.com, that I believe was also around before the WebX application provided HTTP access. It does not require login to read the messages with a newsreader, but if you want to post to that server with a newsreader, you do have to login with an Adobe ID. Most newsreader programs provide a way to do that.<br /><br />Neither of these servers are really considered part of Usenet. While they do make their feeds available to other news servers*, they do not get newsfeeds from other servers. That is why sites such as groups.google.com (formerly dejanews.com) can archive the posts for posterity, but cannot post to these newsgroups.<br /><br />* I /think/ adobeforums.com may have discontinued this practice.<br /><br />That's how it went to the best of my recollection tonight.<br /><br /><Warning: newsgroup .sigfile follows><br /><br />-- <br />Mark A. • Can I receive 'NewsGroups' via Firefox? How?

    A few years ago 'News Groups' was a usual feature of web browsers. I do not see this as being available in some of the newer browsers such as Yahoo, AT&T, etc. I was told that Firefox did provide this feature. If this is true, I will want to acquire a copy of Firefox.

    Newsgroups are normally features of mail programs such as [http://www.mozillamessaging.com/thunderbird/ Thunderbird].
    There are web based news groups that can be accessed via a browser, such as [http://groups.google.com/ Google Groups]

    It certainly works if the news Supplier supports it. Not sure who supplies the BT news feeds so cannot comment on the BT supplied news groups.

  • Where have (most of) the BT Broadband newsgroups g...

    The only one that I can get, using Thunderbird, is "suggestions". The BT help pages show the following as the available choices -
    BT Broadband
    bt.broadband.announce - broadband service status announcements
    bt.broadband.suggestions - suggestions for BT's broadband service
    bt.broadband.support - broadband support group where BT will respond to posts
    bt.internet.users.broadband.technical - broadband technical discussion group
    any help gratefully received,

    All OK using Thunderbird here, so not a general newsgroup problem

  • Gmail suddenly won't work/download, although main email address and newsgroup download just fine

    I have my main email address (a charter.net address), my gmail, and a newsgroup all on Thunderbird. Yesterday, when I clicked the gmail inbox, that little rotating circle icon started up, but nothing ever downloaded, no matter how long I let it spin. Now, whenever I put the cursor on any of the gmail folders (inbox, sent, etc.), the same thing happens. No gmail ever downloads, the icon just keeps spinning. I can download, etc. from my charter addy and get downloads from the one newsgroup I have via Thunderbird, but zip from gmail. I have not changed any settings, and if I go directly to google webmail, there are plenty of gmail messages waiting. I see some prior questions here about similar problems with yahoo and att.net, but the responses don't seem to apply. I'm at a loss. Any ideas for me to try? TIA!

    What do you think about my removing the gmail account altogether from Thunderbird, closing Tbird, reopening, and then setting it up again? Since you said earlier than the emails themselves are separate from my profile, wouldn't they be preserved? The only thing I'm concerned about is that I've set up additional folders in my account that don't exist on the Google server, besides which I've deleted all emails from the server.
    Getting desperate here...
