Newsletter in email
I'm using Pages Newsletter templates I wanted to email the newsletters to my mailing list and have the newsletter show up with out having to save it as a PDF, and then the recipient download it. SO, in other words how can I have the document displayed in the body of the email? Is that even possible or do i need some other software to do that?
TIA.
Oh an another small question: in the template the background color of the "EXTREME" template is red, and I cant seem to change the color of it. is that permanent? I can change others but not that one....??
I am using Mountain lion and Pages 4.2
G,
Pages can't export to HTML, so you can't retain your formatting in a pasted copy in the body of your email.
A 1-Page PDF will automatically display in some email clients, such as Apple Mail.
On your second question, click on the edge or the red graphic, away from the text. This will Select the graphic and you will see little "x"s in the corners indicating that the object is locked. Choose Arrange > Unlock.
Lastly, change the Fill color of the graphic.

Use document as newsletter in email
I know I can do this with Constant Contact or MailChimp but they don't offer me a lot of design options.
What I'd like to do it with Pages in the design mode make a fantastic 1 page newsletter and somehow embed it in an email and send out to clients. I did some research on google and I kept reading that with a PDF or Pages you can't guarentee that if you put it in an email, when the recipient opens the email that the PDF will automatically be open. Some email programs might just list it as an attachment and the reader would have to click on it to open it.
I'm guessing that if you need that extra step of clicking on it to open it, at least 1/2 the people won't bother.
So how is it that MailChimp, Aweber, or Constant Contact when you get an email newsletter from someone that uses them it is open in your email. Is that done with html?
I just hate how uncreative the various email services templates are.
Thanks SusanThe html email is the way it is because the huge variety of email clients out there, particularly the PC email clients are so varied in their ability to display content so they need to hit a fairly low common denominator.
If you want it to work that's just the way it is.
Mail Chimp is not that bad, surely you can work with that?
Design is always a challenge, it is up to you to rise to it.

Compressing 7.8MB newsletter for email
I'm a Mac newby. I bought iWork 05 and tried to send my first newsletter out to family and friends, complete with pics. I'm not familiar enough with iPhoto yet to figure out how to compress each 1.5 MB photo, so I thought I'd try to resize the whole 3 page document. I couldn't figure it out. I tried the version of Stuffit that I bought, tried the exporting, tried Create Archive, tried exporting to Word. No go. No matter what I tried I ended up with at least a 7.8 MB file which is obviously too large (I tried sending test documents to my work address)... Can someone tell me where I went wrong? Is there a better way in iPhoto maybe to resize the photos first before dragging and dropping into the object boxes? Is there a tried-and-true method for sending decent sized newsletters from Pages to Windows folks? I think I'm going to love the Mac experience, but the initial switch is a little bumpy...

Dennis's advice is good, as usual. It's also simple. I'm not sure how well it reduces file size, though it probably works.
I have another possible solution for reducing file size (more complicated, but I know it works).
If your document is only 3 pages, it probably doesn't contain many photos. If you primarily want to e-mail it and are not concerned about the print quality of the photos, the photos can be quite small and low resolution.
If you can find some way to make your 1.5 megabyte (large!) photos smaller... and perhaps make them only 75 dpi (75 dots per inch = good for viewing on screen, not good for high resolution printing) this will reduce the final document size dramatically. (I use photoshop for this.)
You can export smaller photos from iPhoto this way: click to Share, Export, then specify "Scale images no larger than" and indicate a small size.
Select a current (large - 1.5 meg) photo in your Pages document. Click Format, Advanced, Define as Image Placeholder. Then you can drag the replacement (small) image onto this placeholder. This "placeholder" trick means that your new smaller photo will not cause any layout to change.
This will greatly reduce the filesize of your final document. But remember, it will not print in high resolution. So do this on a copy of the original file if you want to save the original in high resolution.
I just did this trick with all the photos in a 20-page annual report and it went from 9 megs down to 1.3 megs. -
Anchor tags to bookmarks within emails not working in Office365 OWA web portal
r years, we've had longer newsletter-style emails which include links throughout the email such as "<a href="#action">please take our action today</>" and then we include "<a id="action" name="action"></a>"
in that section of the email. This works in all email clients we've used for years, including Outlook 2010 and hotmail - including the recent upgrades.
However, in the Outlook 365 web portal, it converts the href anchor tags to plain text, appearing as "[#action]please take our action today"
in both the "preview panel" as well as when you double click the message to open in a new window.
Fascinatingly, this same email will both view fine when viewed from the Outlook 2010 desktop AND when you forward this message from the web portal, it shows fine in the Compose window.
And recipients of that message can of course see and use the bookmark anchor links properly.
We upgraded about a month ago to the latest version of Office 365. We are using an Office 365 Enterprise E1 for Exchange license.
This behavior happens consistently on Macs and PC browsers, in IE, Chrome, Mozilla, Safari.

When I try and send picture emails, they arrive as attachments.
Hello there,
I'm trying to send a newsletter-style email. I'd like it to arrive in all recipricants inbox's as a picture. When I drag and drop pictures into Mac Mail though, they arrive in Hotmail accounts (and probably others) as attachments rather than in the email body. How do I resolve this?
Many thanks in advance.Thank you so much... It was doing my head in!! Don't know how this happened

Problems with Anchors in HTML email
We're having problems getting Mail.app to properly respond to Anchors in HTML email.
At the beginning of a newsletter-type email, we have a short TOC, with links to anchors further down the page.
Clicking on the anchors does not do anything, only double-clicks make Mail.app respond, but then it jumps to the wrong location. Instead of jumping and putting the anchor at the top of the visible window, it puts it just below the visible window - effectively jumping to the end of the previous article, instead of the beginning of the current one.
We have been able to reproduce the problem on a number of machines, all running Mac OS 10.6 and Mail.app 4.
The problem does not occur in Mail.app 3.5 under OS 10.5, or in any other mail program.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Is there a workaround for this?
ThanksTurns out it's a bug in the Snow Leopard version of mail.app.
Let's see how long it will take Apple to fix this -
Help required with a newsletter...
I have created a newsletter in illustrator 2x A3 back to back that will make a 4 page A4 newsletter. The problem is i now need to send it via email, but the file is going to be far to big. How can i get round this? Saving in PDF has shrunk the file a little but not enough. Do i need to shrink the images all down or resize the whole thing as it wont need to be A4 to send through emails??
Any solutions guys?What i have got is 2x A3 images which i will print back to back and then fold in half to create a 4 page A4 newsletter. Getting this printed is no problem as i can pop into the printers locally with my artwork saved on cd. The problem is now that the organization i am making the newsletter for have come to me at the end of my volunteer work and asked that i save the newsletter so that it can be sent out via email as well. They want it broken down into A4 pages rather than the A3 layouts i created for the printers. They want it to be a single attachment that will flow vertically from page 1 to 4. I have tried to break this down into one single illustrator document but as you can imagine the length is very long and the artwork included bumps the size of the file up beyond what emails will allow. This is ultimately were my problem lies, creating the newsletter for email.
My apologies if i am confusing you or still have not included enough info for you to help me, still getting to grips with the world of design and finding my feet in the industry. Any information you can pass my way is much appreciated...
Thanks guys. -
Help with newsletter PHP Mail script for mySQL / cron job
I'm just trying to set up a PHP script to send emails as a cron job.
It pretty much seems to work, but I can't get it to do two parts.
The first part is to send the emails, and the second is to send a notification email to the site owner confirming that the emails have been sent.
The script looks like:
<?php
include_once "connect_to_mysql.php";
$sql = mysql_query("SELECT UserID, Firstname, Email, Newsletter_Received FROM Users WHERE Firstname='test' LIMIT 20");
$numRows = mysql_num_rows($sql);
$mail_body = '';
while($row = mysql_fetch_array($sql)){
$id = $row["UserID"];
$email = $row["Email"];
$name = $row["Firstname"];
$mail_body = 'Test - please ignore';
$subject = "Safari Awards Newsletter";
$headers = "From:[email protected]\r\n";
$headers .= "Content-type: text/html\r\n";
$to = "$email";
$mail_result = mail($to, $subject, $mail_body, $headers);
if ($mail_result) {
mysql_query("UPDATE Users SET Newsletter_Received='1' WHERE Email='$email' LIMIT 20");
} else {
?>
<?php
if ($numRows == 0) {
$subj = "Newsletter Sent";
$body = "The current newsletter has been sent to everyone.";
$hdr = "From:[email protected]\r\n";
$hdr .= "Content-type: text/html\r\n";
mail("[email protected]", $subj, $body, $hdr);
?>
Basically with the line
include_once "connect_to_mysql.php";
included, it sends the emails as per the SELECT query, but does not send the 'Newsletter Sent' email.
But if I take out that line, it obviously doesn't send the emails as per the SELECT query, but it does send the 'Newsletter Sent' email.
Any suggestions on what might need changing in order for it to do both would be much appreciated!
Thanks.Change this line -
if ($numRows == 0) {
to this -
if ($mail_result) { -
Can I create html emails in iWeb?
I see those html emails with the colours and the embedded images and links to the website. The programming doesn't seem tough but I don't know how to create them and then how to send them.
I use Entourage for email but am not married to it, and wondered if anyone had any resources. I'm looking to do a newsletter style email (images links to site, etc.), not that different from an eVite, but I've not heard of anyway to create them.
thanks
enzosfThe way you do this currently is to create your web
page, open it with Tiger Safari, and use the menu
item for emailing the contents. However you may need
to put your page on a server and I think pages
created with iWeb may not work that well -- you would
need to experiment.
I just did this both ways. Creating an email from an iWeb site hosted on the internet worked OK... but didn't pick up the background graphic, tiled.... maybe I just didn't wait long enough! (Ha!)
And I did it from the local files on my computer, (Publish to Folder), and it worked much better, picking up the background immediately.
So....open the page you want (index.html) in Safari>File>Mail Contents of this Page.
Would work GREAT just for doing an email Newsletter with Graphics and such!

Spry Menu issues in Internet Explorer
I have created a Spry menu for my website and although the menu appears to look fine in Firefox and Safari, the formatting changes in Internet Explorer(IE).
1.sub menu bar is not dropping down below the main menu bar it is appearing at the top of the screen.
2.When you hover over the sub menu bar items the font should be white however in IE it is appearing as an aqua color.
3.The menu bar is not straight across the page, at the beginning and end there are chunks of the menu bar that appear white.
Are there any fixes for these issues that would help to make the menu look consistent across all browsers. The website page is
www.applmgt.net/LMNtestpage/html, below is the code. Any help would be appreciated as soon as possible.

of workers most needed. More maintenance trades are needed and less
construction trades workers are needed. Also, companies now need more
operating and technical employees, such as process operators, power
engineers, and instrumentation technicians.<p>A study recently put out by the Government of Alberta (Report on Phase
2 of the Oil Sands Labour Resource Study) found that from 2006 to 2020,
15,000 new employees would be needed for operations and maintenance
in the oil sands industry. The study says there will be a need for
over 5,000 plant and facility operators between 2006 and 2020. This
includes process operators

is one reason (for the increased need) because a lot of the older

other reason is expansion of the existing plants and new plants
starting up.”</font></p>
<p><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hazel White,

I am new to Dreamweaver and therefore would appreciate a bit more help with the issues you identified.
I did replace the doctype. As for removing the menu from a table and putting it into a div, would you be able to identify in the code below how I would do that? Thanks

I am currently using Word 2008 to produce a club newsletter for email distribution. The Word (.docx) file can be up to 2.4MB in size. When I use Print > Save to PDF the resulting file can be as large as 12MB! I tried using the CUPS-PDF virtual printer option and got a file 26MB is size!!
A friend used his Windoze machine to print to PDF and got the file size I was after at just over 1MB. I also tried the Adobe Online "convert to PDF service" and got file sizes lower than 1MB.
What is going on with the Mac OSX conversion? How can I get smaller PDF's without having to shell out for Adobe Acrobat Pro?Peter Ongley wrote:

This may not help or may degrade any images in your document, but try this: Open the PDF file in the Preview application. Invoke File -> Save As, then set "Quartz Filter" to "Reduce File Size", give the file a different name, and save the file. -
I am having an a href / a name problem after constructing my
newsletter for email dissemination. When I create the email and use
a href="article1" to a name="article1" it works on my computer to
take the viewer from the menu link to the document in the article
but when I send it out in a test email it attempts to find a
location on my computer.
Help please so I can send out my email newsletter.
Thanks
VoodooHi David - yes, you and I both!! It has totally wrecked my data-base of Help links.
The more this issue is given air space maybe the better chance to rectify it. Surely it can't be too difficult to create a method whereby old URLs are transferred to the new system? -
The newsletter we publish, would not print the third page in the PDF version we published. I exported as an interactive PDF, and once I exported as a PDF for print it resolved the issue. My problem is that I'm not sure why it would print the first two pages and not the last (if it was an export problem), and also since we do utilize many interactive features these get lost if exported for print. The users mostly access our newsletter via email and web, however many print to use as references. So I need to find a happy medium to satisfy both uses. Any advice?
