Newsletter layout, aligning columns, paragraph breaks and lines of text

HI,
I have never designed a newsletter before.
It is annoying me because I am trying to be as meticulous as possible with my alignment, but I notice there are things all over the place that don't line up.
I have a paragraph style, with space before and after. I have three columns. When I look at one line of text across all three columns, they do not line up. The WOULD line up if I had all straight text and no image wraps, but the image wraps, and the start of a new paragraph in column two, throws off alignment in column three.
What is the best way to make stuff line up with the least amount of effort possible?
Are there tutorials on good newsletter layout design? Grid layout?

I just stated working with InDesign in my GA 101 class. It really was great fun but takes alot of practice. Still learning something new everyday. I will be working with grids the next class and will be checking in the forum for help.

Hard return paragraph breaks at top of text frames

I'm learning how to do book layouts in InDesign CS4 and I have a problem I can't figure out how to solve. I'm autoflowing huge chunks of pasted text into linked text frames and when a paragraph breaks (with a double hard return) at the same place as a new page/column, there is a blank line on the top of the text frame like so:
Is there a way to automatically make that paragraph break line go away when it comes at the top of a new text frame? My document is 400+ pages with many, many paragraphs. I don't want to get rid of the hard return spaces between all of them, just the ones that come at the top of text frames.

To expand slightly, space before and after are ignored at the top of a column or frame, but the empty paragraph is not.
You might want to try out the "Find/Change by List" sample script which fixes multiple returns along with leading and trailing whitespace and double space after a period (among other common problems). It's really just a chained set of Find/Change operations that can speed up the cleanup of new text.

How to get rid of paragraph breaks in a lengthy text instead of manually

I have imported a large piece of text - it is very narrow and has many paragraph breaks I guess you call it - or return breaks. I started doing it manually but it is a nightmare. Is there an easier way to do it? I snooped around and tried a few things but cannot seem to get this to work. I have a lot more work to do. Thanks again.

Position the mouse pointer after the last printed character of a paragraph. Press the mouse button and hold it while you drag down over several of the empty lines. Release the mouse button. Simultaneously press command+C keys (then release) to copy the selection to the clipboard. Simultaneously press command+F keys (then release) to open the Find&Replace dialog. Click once in the "Find:" window, then press command+V keys (then release) to paste the contents of the clipboard there. Click in the "Replace:" window then press "Return" to enter a single carriage return. Click on the "Replace & Find' button.

Column Validation on Single Line of Text

I have a sharepoint input form in SP2013, which contains text field with below properties
1. Type: Single line of Text
2. Under Column validation
=AND(ISNUMBER([Column name]+0),ISERROR(FIND(".",[Column name],1)))
On form submit, the above condition evaluates and throws an error if field value is non numeric field.(This is expected and working fine)
I also want to add another condition that should not allow preceding zero
example: it should throw error on 0122343(any number starting with zero)

You should achieve that with the following formula :
=AND(AND(ISNUMBER([Column name]+0);ISERROR(FIND(".",[Column name],1)));LEFT([Column name],1) <> "0")
If the first character of your column is 0 it fails validation

Line Breaks and Preferred Carrier Text

I support our E-Commerce (ISA 5.0) web application. We are using the R/3 edition, which in our case is an ECC6 backend (not CRM).
Anyhow, I am pulling the customer preferred carrier text from the vendor master into the web application. Once I have it, I am appending additional text (ex, "Qualifies for FREE FREIGHT") to it, then sending it back to ECC6 when the order is send/saved.
To set the text I'm using the following line of code....
ui.header.setText(new Text("100", appText));
with appText = "FREE FREIGHT" + "\r\n" + preferredCarrierTextFromR3;
Here is my problem. Last year, when our backend was R/3 6.40c, this worked fine. This year, however, the "\r\n" are being 'translated' as garbage characters (# signs), and thus ignored. So, when this modified preferred carrier text is printed to a Pick List, for example, the text is overwriting. You can actually see # signs printed where last year a line break would occur, and thus, the preferred carrier text is printing directly on top of the "FREE FREIGHT" text.
I've tried everything I could Google as a replacement for "\r\n", but I have yet to find a solution to the problem. I've tried string buffer, line.separator, chr(10), chr(13) and just about any other suggestion I could find.
I should add that I'm not really sure what is causing the line break characters to not be recongnized correctly.
Anyone have any ideas?

PO header and line item text in smartform

HI,
In my smartform I am fetching the 'PO header text', 'item text', and 'material text' for PO with "Include text"( by passing text name, object id etc..) with "no error if no text is maintained" checkbox checked
This is working fine In the development servers....
but when I moved these requests to quality servers...the above mentioned texts are not getting displayed in the smartform...while Texts are maintained in PO.
What can be the problem??

I guess there cant be any problem with the Include text . The problem can be either the text is not maintained or may be the include is not getting executed.
See if you have any conditions in the condition tab.
Check it in the debug mode and let me know if includ text is getting executed but value is not getting populated,
Better you can do one thing
Take the generated functional module name let us suppose your FM nae is /1BCDWB/SF00000100 then add SAPL as below
/1BCDWB/SAPLSF00000100
Now go to SE38 and give this Program name and in the program find the code with the Text id .
Supose your Text id is 'ZTXT'.
find with this this ID and find which function module is used to get your text.
Put break point on the FM and now execute the form.
Check whether values text is getting populated .

Change the height of a paragraph break while using a 12pt baseline grid

Hey all,
I am laying out a newsletter – and I want to tighten up the layout a bit. Currently the body text is 9pt on 12pt leading as the baseline grid is 12pt. I think the gap between the paragraphs is too much, and I want to reduce the height.(This will save me some space!) (See image)
One solution although it's not really practical is to manually change the leading of the paragraph break to 4pt which reduces the gap to the desired size. But this is a longish newsletter and that would be a nightmare... (Hopefully this example gives you an idea of what I am looking to do)
Another thing I tried was to take out the paragraph breaks and put a 1mm space after each paragraph. This works, until there is a different amount of paragraphs in a column causing the overall column lengths to be different heights. Not ideal.
I don't really know what to call what I am looking for – so if anyone has any ideas for this, that would be great.

Yeah so I do usually use Space Before or Space After values – but on a baseline grid I am getting uneven columns if I have say 3 paragraphs in one column, and 4 in the other.
But that's a good point – expecting the baseline grid to absorb the difference in paragraph spacings isn't realistic. I guess I will just have to enjoy large gaps between paragraphs!

What I'm after is a 'search function' to insert into a FindChangeByList.
Jongware suggested the following - but when inserted into my list I can't get it to do anything - it doesn't throw up a Javascript error.

I regularly receive a 'word' document on which I run a 'FindChangeByList' which cleans up and formats the text with a number of GREP/text searches.
One of the search lines converts a particluar string of text to a paragraph style "Callout_3" (the most common occurence of Callouts).
This style applies a paragraph rule, above and below the line, to create a coloured block/band out of which said text is reveresed.
The problem that I have is that the style (because of the paragraph rules), only works correctly if the paragraph has x3 lines of text.
I have styles set up for every other eventuality - Callout_1 (for single line of text), Callout_2 (for x2 lines of text) etc.
What I'm looking for is a script that can count the number of lines in the paragraph (once the "Callout_3" style has been applied) and then change the style accordingly to the number of lines in each paragraph/Callout.
Any further thoughts?

Well, I said it was untested ... Found two major errors. First one is also visible when you manually search for the style "Callout_3". Rather than marking each and every paragraph on its own, InDesign gathers as much as possible. Hence, just testing paragraph[0] would miss out all other paragraphs. Explicitly looping over all paragraphs per "found item" does work.
The other one is sort of a "syntax" error. Merely testing "lines == 2" does not work -- but it doesn't give an error either! Apparently, it's okay to compare an object ("lines") to a number, even though it doesn't work. The property to check is "lines.length" -- that returns the number of lines for a paragraph.
Putting it all together results in this script.
'And now I shall test it,' said Wen. This time he twisted it gently to and fro. 'That si-si-si That simple-ple, eh eheh simple, eh?'
... And I tested it.

Text Fields of an External Content Type come across as Multiple Line of Text

In SharePoint 2013 I have an external content type that consists of a couple of short (nvarchar) fields (no more that 15 characters). When I use this ECT in a custom list the fields from the ECT end up as a "Note" type instead of "Text".
I am not sure how this happens. I have verified this by accessing the list via poweshell where I see the Type being as "Note" and also the SchemaXml showing the colName attribute as "ntext".
The strange thing is that initially when I created the web application and built my lists this was working.
Any ideas or pointers would be appreciated.

Based on your description, my understanding is that When you use the ECT in a custom list the fields from the ECT end up as a "Note" type instead of "Text".

Line item text is automatically disappeared

Hello Experts,
I have weird situation when I enter FI document.
In FB01 transaction, I am going to enter the first line item data after I put the document header data.
After I enter a G/L account, some values and line item text, I need to some data at 'More data' tab so that I click 'More data' button.
When I go back to the screen for the first line item data after putting some data at 'More data' tab, the line item text that I have already entered before is automatically disappeared.
Is there anyone who know why this happen?

This is so weird.
When we enter the document under language option 'EN', there is no problem like above.
But in case we logon with our language 'KO', that problem happens.
I think this might have something to do with language issue.

Line item text in BOM

Hi ,
I am trying to upload the BOM from the excel and also i am trying to change the BOM based on the data in the Excel.
During this process , i have to check the line item text for each component of the BOM to see wheather there is any changes in the line item text is there or not.
Is there any way to pull out the line item text for the BOM ..Not only the m Line item text 1 and Line item text 2 , but also the Long text...

We can use the function module READ_TEXT ,
in the import parameters ,
id : MPO
object : BOM
language : EN
text name : it is the concatenation of
                  sy-mandt
                  stpo-stlty   "bom type
                  stpo-stlnr   "Bom number
                  stpo-stlkn "Item Node
                  stpo-stpoz "Item Counter
Text name should be in the same order like this.
Now pass these values to the READ_TEXT Function module
the output will be in the form of an internal table. the internal table line will have the long text for that particular line item...

How 2 Copy Header & Line Item Text from Purchase Order 2 Out Bound Delivery

Hi SD Gurus,
I want to copy header and line item text from Purchase Order to Out Bound Delivery (This is required in Stock Transfer Process).
I have been able to do successful config. for copying header and line item text from Sales Order to Outbound Delivery but config. doesn't seems to be same for copying text from PO to OBD.
Is there any way to achieve the same? Can some expert show the way to achieve this.

I have seen some PO's which have info rec texts in that, which gets pulled by the above code...first thing is its id is F02 which exist in STXH table also there is other text with F01 id, and hence the table it_itab gets both these text hence no pbm.
but i came across a PO which has only one text which is info rec text with id F05 and is not store in stxh and hence doesnot get pulled by read_text fm. How do i change my cod to get this text which should not hamper other PO's as well.
As mentioned in above msgs, this F05 could be retrieved by providing object name as EINE.
anyhelp will be appreciated and rewarded.
