Newspaper layouts cause major usability problems for your website

Think about what happens if a [Web Development|http://www.intellixmedia.com/web-development.htm] page is laid out in a newspaper-type multiple column format. How would visitors read that page? There will be this thin strip of text going down the page. To read it, they will have to scroll down with the browser to read that narrow strip. When they reach the bottom, they will have to scroll upwards again to find the next column to continue reading that same story. And so on. Back and forth, and up and down. In the meantime the rest of the space that they have in their huge monitor is wasted - they cannot use it to speed up their reading because at any one time, only one narrow column is relevant. The frustration and irritation caused by that kind of page will probably rival the annoyance caused by the webmaster mistakes listed in my satirical Seven Ways to Annoy Visitors to Your Website. In reality though, many visitors to such a website probably won't even bother to read the page. Why suffer the punishment when the competition is just a click away? (Bear with me in this section. It may not look relevant to the main topic, but I want to try to address one of the root causes of low-usability sites as a site with a newspaper layout would have been.) Many new web designers want their website to look unique. They want their site to look special and memorable. As such, they have a tendency to come up with all sorts of interesting things to do with their site, including this newspaper layout idea, so that it does not look like every other site on the Internet. Unfortunately, in so doing, as discussed before in my article on Appearance, Usability and Search Engine Visibility in Web Design, they may sometimes inadvertently create websites that cause usability problems as well as search engine indexing issues. Recall the (not so) early days of home desktop computing, when many people used an operating system called MS-DOS. Contrary to what you may think, not all programs that ran on DOS were command-line programs. There were full-screen or windowed programs like the ones you see on Windows and the Mac today. However, the task of learning to use new programs on DOS was not as easy as it is to use a new program on modern operating systems. Every program had their own way of doing things. For example, to save a file, different programs had different keystrokes and menus to accomplish the same task. With modern operating systems, companies like Microsoft and Apple have clearly-defined "Human Inteface Guidelines" for programmers to follow. As a result, the interface of just about every program on your computer is fairly similar. For example, to save a file in Windows, no matter what program you are using, you can simply use the "File" menu and the "Save" item on that menu. Or hit Ctrl+S. Or click the icon that looks like a floppy disk on the toolbar. The standardisation of the interface means that anyone who has learnt how to use one program will also know how to use another. You no longer have to read the manual. After installing a new program, most people can simply grope around and still be able to accomplish their task.
Web design is pretty much the same way. Although there is no overarching organisation to give a user interface guideline to specify that websites are to work a certain way, there are millions (or more) of websites on the Internet that more or less behave the same manner. By their existence and similarity alone, these existing websites have established a de facto standard. Users who know how to navigate a site with one of those standard design styles will also know how to navigate other sites with the same way of doing things. In other words, you don't have to be a web guru or a usability master to create a usable website any more. Just use the trick of following the standard pattern used by other sites - a one, two or three column website with navigation menus in the usual places (top, bottom, left or right), and the main content flowing downwards in the centre, links that work like normal links, and so on. (See my articles on usability if you want more information.) By making your site operate in a standard way, visitors will automatically find your site usable, because they've already learnt it from their past experience with other sites.

I have the same problem, as I can not log into my iCloud via Preference Pane since I changed my password which is verified correct.  Keeps saying "Can not login at this time.  Try to login again."  Or just give the busy signal and eventually no connection.
I looked for the "Networkinterfaces.plist" entry but there is none.  Any other potential solutions would be highly appreciated.
Apple refuses to help unless I pay $49 for their mistake.

  • Firefox 31.0 - slowness and script problems for using websites

Since Firefox 31.0 is released, some technical problems of slowness and script problems to use
websites have been noticed from mine. Sometimes it needs up to some minutes to load a website
and sometimes there are error messages for an unanswered script.

    Hello FredMcD,
    thank you for your message.
But your answer to my question at support.mozilla.org is not helpful,
although it is a professional technical answer from a Top 10 Contributor
    from mozilla.
It seems that there is a permanent unfixed problem always if a new
version of mozilla is released. After all fixed problems of the earlier
version of firefox, there is no problem at all.
But if I am already working with the non-problem earlier version of
firefox, then suddenly the problems of error messages, slowness and
script errors are appearing, and if I have looked for the actual version
of firefox, there was signed a new version and now I have known,
aha a new vesion of firefox was released and it needs up some time
for every new version until the error problems were fixed.
Maybe it is combined with the plugins like flashplayer or shockwave.
But a professional version of firefox should not sign up error messages,
because of plugins, while working with these plugins.
Another answer from another support.mozilla.member was for an
overload problem, because of opening some windows of firefox.
But to open many windows of firefox was already no problem with the
earlier version firefox 30.0 or earlier, until the error messages are fixed.
The same unfixed problems are since firefox 25.0 up to 30.0, but I was
wondering for how long version 30.0 was actual in practical working.
And since version of firefox 31.0 was released the same problems
of error messages, slowness and script errors were appearing.
At the moment it seems firefox 31.0 works alright.
But only the following time shows if it works without error messages,
slowness and sript problems or not.
In hope to give a helpful answer to yours
    kind regards

  • Lion 10.7.4 caused major QT problems

We updated two systems to 10.7.4 over the weekend. Now, when we receive QT files via email that were converted using Apple Compressor, we get a message within the mail message that reads "Missing Plug-in".
Also, these files are not usable within Logic Pro 9. They cause severe issues with Logic. Files are unplayable, and/or cause the arrange window to change to a light-grey.
We have a workaround for the moment that involves re-exporting the offending files in Quicktime Player 7 (using my old QT Pro Plug-in). That allows us to use in Logic.
Strangely, another video editor sends us files that DO work. Files that did not go through compressor, but instead were mastered with MPEG Streamclip work just fine!
Anybody else experiencing this or similar things? Any solution availble or in the works?

Mojo66 found the solution for this. The post is here:
    in response to Mojo66
    He says:
I found the offender: /System/Library/Frameworks/QTKit.framework. Restored it from a TM backup pre 10.7.4 and voila, looping is back.
    Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), 2009, V8, 16GB, 1TB RAID0
....Worked on both systems here. In 17 years, I have never been so hosed by an minor system update. Scary.

  • Major Finder Problem for Quicktime Files

    Hey all,
I have noticed a horrible bug in Finder for Sprited Quicktime files.
Some background. Some files I download have web 'popups' in the Quicktime file as a marketing campaign. We put a link inside the Quicktime file (you can do so in GoLive) so when it is opened to the end a web link pops up.
However, Leopard has introduced a bug where if you open a folder that even HAS one of these sprited Quicktime files, it will open my browser and go to the link inside the Quicktime file, even though I did even open the file.
I know this bug does not effect everyone, but it is a serious bug in the software.

dude. gotta watch where you download your pornoze!
    heh
thx for the heads up. havent noticed that yet here. i wonder if this bug is because of quick look...

  • Cache Clearing Problem for my website

I have tried every single thing from this support area to clear my browser cache, but still when i open this website http://www.enukesoftware.com, it doesn't load properly the CSS files.
Please help me out, its ruining my day.

Does the page load properly in a Firefox Private Window? If not, try restarting Firefox in Safe Mode (Menu > Help > Restart with Add-ons disabled) to see if the page works there.
If the latter works then this could be caused by an extension.

  • Refresh problem for swf website

I have a web site which is swf movies based on html.
to be refreshed (the swfs) every time I re-ender it(not
every 10 or 20 seconds). Think of it like a news site which needs
to be refreshed constantly to keep up to date. What coding should I
use?Should it be on the html page or in the swf?
It loads the swf from the cashe of the browser even when I
have made changes to the server files.
    Please I need some help
    Thanks

Do you mean that the 'news' or 'updates' are actually made to
    the swf file itself?
That would be unusual for a data driven site although its not
impossible. There's even a reasonably 'new' data exchange format
based on a simplified swf format that is used for loading data. But
it doesn't sound like that's what you're doing.. it seems like you
want to reload the original swf itself. I hope thats via some CMS
or something that's generating the swf files. Its seems impractical
for a 'news' type site otherwise.
Either way I imagine you can reload the swf into the _root
level. You might need to use the same type of anti-cacheing
    approach as before.
    _root.loadMovie("sameSwf.swf?dontCache="+getTimer());
How often you do that... well that would depend on how often
you think it would change. AFAIK there's no way to know if the file
on the server has physically changed without polling the server
    separately e.g. via LoadVars .

  • What is the cost to have an iphone app built for your website?

In the near future I would like to have an app built that works with my website.
Does anyone have an idea on how much it costs to have your own app created these days?
    Thanks.

It's impossible to give a price based on the information you've given.
You would have to come up with a fairly detailed outline of exactly what you want the App to do, all the functionality it has, what sort of look and feel, what systems it needs to 'talk' to (your web site back-end), graphics, sound and animation etc.
Only with that information could someone begin to work out a estimated price. Then as you and the developer discusses the finer details, and the idea is expanded upon, or changed, the final price may change.

  • Adobe Captivate 8 projects published to HTML 5 shows major loading problems and stops

Adobe Captivate 8 projects published to HTML 5 cause major loading problems in most browsers(IE 11, Chrome v. 35.0, Firefox v. 31). Loading… (screen)
The view stops after a while and only the Loading… (icon) can be seen on the page.
Is this a known problem with Captivate projects published to html5 and is there a way to fix it? What is wrong?
Test the html5 version of this project at: http://kurs.dokker.no/captivate/
and see for yourself what happends.

I changed the Preferences/Project/Start and End  Preloader % to 25 and published the projects again. The course: http://kurs.dokker.no/captivate/elev/
stopped like before on one of the first slides, loading… screen like before in IE11.
In Chrome v. 37.0 the course worked badly, would not run, sound missing and buttons not working.
In Firefox 31.0 the course worked to a degree even if the program was advising to use another browser for this content.
In Opera 23.0 sound was missing and else working as bad as IE.
All this testes is done on a PC using Windows 8 connected på internet via ethernet, download speed: 66.57.
I would like to use the HTML5-format since it has a cleaner view than swf-files that appear to be jagged, but there is a lot missing before Adobe Captivates html5 publish is where it needs to be. Her are the complete html5 course and here are the swf based course for comparison.

  • How to autosize your website

Does DW8 have an autosize or autostrecth function , where it
will allways resize the webpage regardless of the screen resolution
, I am aware that 800,600 and 1024,768 are the most common , I only
need to autosize between these two resolutions, do I need to design
    in 800,600.?.
    Thanks.

    > I thinks these debates comes in the same category as

    I would agree. ;o)
    > *My* preferred viewport. What's the difference between
    *my* preferred
    > resolution and preferred viewport. They are both
    completely
    > unpredictable... or what?
They are both unpredictable, but theres much more data on
    'average' screen
resolutions than viewport sizes. So many people like to grasp
    that as a
viable statistic and then use that as their reasoning behind
    designing to a
    specific size.
    >Wouldn't you agree that 99% of all page would look crap
    at 680x420 (or
    >something like that... I don't have that on my display)
    but most pages
    >looks OK at 800/1024... but a bit small at larger
    resolutions. How do you
    >define that in viewports? Don't we need a fixpoint such
    as resolution?
You're falling for the same gap in logic as most folks do.
All screen resolution can tell us is what the probable
    (though not
    necessarily actual) upper limit is.
    It doesn't tell us:
    - if they are browsing fully maximized
    - if they have a side panel open
    - how many toolbars they have
Yes, a high percentage of people DO browse fully maximized,
    so there is some
argument for using screen resolution stats. But what's often
    more important
is the ones that aren't average.
Maybe 80% of your site visitors are hitting it with a 1080
    monitor. Let's
assume 80% of those browser fully maximized without panels or
    toolbars.
So then we use that as our argument for making the web site
    1000 pixels
    wide.
However, in doing so, we just written off the other 36% of
    the audience.
Which is a rather big chunk. It also doesn't take into
    consideration that a
lot of the customers may be icnreasngly using small monitors
    as much as
large monitors (PDAs, Blackberries, etc.) (Side note...anyone
    know if web
stats apps can properly track screen stats from those types
    of devices?)
The bottom line: all it ever is is a guess. And the amount of
    tangible data
that looking at screen resolutions can bring isn't worth a
    whole lot. The
problem is that people put way too much weight on that stat.
So, I say, design what you think is best, but err on the side
    of too narrow
if you have to have a fixed-width site.
I suppose I need to rethink my philosophy on that a bit. I
    guess I'd
    prioritize it as such:
    - Design a fluid layout if you can. Optimize it for what you
    feel is a good
    average size.
    - If you can't do fluid:
    - design it 750 pixels or less as it's best to err on the
    side of too
    narrow than too wide. UNLESS:
    - you have concrete reasons to purposely make the site even
    wider
    from a usability standpoint
for your audience that outweighs the usability problems that
    those using smaller viewports
    will encounter
ALAP didn't have much of a tangible reason for making their
    site that wide.
In fact, I made a greasemonkey script to return it to a
    decent fluid-width
layout and the site still works just fine.

  • To continue connecting to your website, you must repair or remove its administrative settings

    Hello.
When trying to connect to my website, I'm getting a prompt saying the files appear to have been recently moved.....yadayada. I realise it's like this since we have changed to a new host since I see our old one there correct? OK-so my question is what happens after I click that button that says to remove the administrative settings for your website and continue connecting?
I've been told to update our website and I don't have a whole lot of knowledge about it. I do connect to it at work through ftp for uploading pix and access to cpanel but that's about it.
The person that did the site no longer works with me, but I know that he used Contribute3 (Macromedia) for at least some of the site, so I'm assuming the new Contribute will work.
I really don't want to screw things up clicking that button and somehow mess up our site.
    Thanks for the help!
    Jim

    Thanks very much Dominic:
I was able to open that cthubxxxxx.csi file in text editor and I assume I just put in http://www.liquidweb.com (in place of our old host in at least 3 spots) since they are our new host? As far as the IP addres goes, where do I get that or find it? Is it the IP address for the host (liquidweb)? I assume I call them for this information?
    Just one other question:
I noticed on the cthubxxxxx.csi file it says macromedia_dreamweaver_hub. I assume that means the site was made with dreamweaver? I assume I will be able to edit with Contribute?
    Thanks again for your help-

  • Xorg & Catalyst updates cause major problems here

I went through the other similar threads and tried just about everything without luck... The latest Xorg & Catalist updates cause lots of problems on my desktop.
The video card is an ATI X300.
Without a xorg.conf, X server starts and things work, more or less - but much slower than they used to. It's pretty clear fglrx is not actually used, xv doesn't work, fglrxinfo gives:
Error: unable to open display (null)
With the previous xorg.conf (the one wich worked fine before the updates), X doesn't start (even after commenting out the "RgbPath" line and adding Option "AutoAddDevices" "false") and the log shows many fglrx errors such as:
(EE) fglrx(0): Unknown EDID version 0
    (EE) fglrx(0): ===[swlDalHelperAddCustomizeMode] === CWDDEDI_DisplayGetSetModeTimingOverride failed: 7
    X -configure won't generate a xorg.conf
    Fatal server error:
    Caught signal 11. Server aborting
    In conclusion:
    - without a xorg.conf fglrx doesn't work although X server starts
    - with an old xorg.conf fglrx will generate errors and X server will not start
    Any ideas?
