Newspaper Workflow with InDesign

I am building a newspaper in InDesign and I'm looking for a workflow to improve the work to all workers.
What i'm looking for is an application where all writers can write news directly in the template, to know the characters and space limitations. Basically is what professional newspapers use.
Does anyone know something like this?
Thanks in advance.

Daniel -- If you want to email me offline, I can offer what I know. We recently installed a new proprietary system based on InDesign. Some of what you want can be done with a combination of InDesign and InCopy. [email protected]

  • InDesign 6 compatibility with InDesign 4

I've recently switched platforms, going from PC to Mac. I used to have Adobe CS 4 on my PC, but now need to buy in Mac format. Problem is, it's discontinued - you can't purchase it anywhere! (Unless you want to go the illegal route) So, I've thought about purchasing Creative Suite 6 - although, I'm concerned with how well InDesign 6 will play with InDesign 4. I've read the other forums that have said you can open the files, but any new features will be lost. My assistant (still on a PC) runs CS 4 and we only really use basic features on our projects - things like text, adding an image, shapes, etc. Not even any special effects, etc. Do you think I would be safe to upgrade to CS 6 and our workflow with InDesign will not be disrupted?

You CAN'T upgrade to CS6. The only upgrade path to CS6 is from CS5 so you'll have to pay full price.
That said, you can move to CS6 via Creative Cloud for $29.99/month for the first year. As an added benefit, you get two activations just like you do with a normal license but you can choose to have them as Mac AND Windows instead of having to choose.
You can find details on the intro to Creative Cloud here: http://bit.ly/WqroTc

  • Creating workflow using InDesign with XML

What is the fastest and most accurate way to make a workflow from a XML file with Indesign?
Lets say we will make a school yearbook with about 30 pages. each page has 20 portraits of students with their name beneath each image.
The XML files is generatet from a home-made XML-creator and got student information from databases.
I have heard of easy way to do this with Indesign and templates, snippets and maybe a script.
Can anyone tell me step by step how to, or does anyone know of a tutorial movie etc?
    thanx

Also if any one has any thoughts on creating a front end using XML files, pros cons etc??? Just prototyping and wondering should i do down this road!!

  • InCopy CS4 ok with InDesign CS5.5?

I work at a small newspaper using all Macs and CS4. The writers use InCopy as their word processor, and the designer links their IC files in her ID document. Sometimes an IC linked file will require further editing in IC, but they never use IC to open an ID document.
We want to upgrade the designer and copy editors (who all use InDesign) to CS5.5. I'm wondering if we can squeeze another year out of the writers' PPC Macs, which will not run IC CS5.5, by having them stay on IC CS4. Having to upgrade 15 Macs will be pricy.
I've seen several questions here about using InCopy CS5.5 with older versions of InDesign, but not the other way around. Can InCopy CS4 be used with InDesign CS5.5 in the workflow I have described?
Related question: if InCopy CS5.5 opens an InCopy CS4 doocument, does that change the document so that it can't be opened in InCopy CS4 again? (in case we upgrade the writers incrementally).

Just bite the bullet and upgrade everyone. Sometimes the cost for doing something is way less than it is for not doing something.

  • Export PDF Workflow with Applescript and CS3

    Hello,
I am setting up some PDF workflow with Applescript.
On a given moment, as my script runs and after getting some user-input answers to questions in some dialogs, my script tells InDesign CS3 to open the Export Adobe PDF window for the current document. I copied and pasted that small part of the script:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    tell document 1
export format PDF type to "Macintosh_HD:Test01.pdf" using "somePreset" with showing options
    end tell
    end tell
When you run this small part of my Applescript, InDesign opens the Export Adobe PDF window (as expected) waiting for me to click on "Export". That is exactly what I want, since the user is given here a last opportunity to change some values (for example page range, or spreads). When all is set, the user can click on Export to close the dialog and finish the script.
Problem: I was hoping that the Adobe PDF Preset "somePreset" would be selected in the first pull-down menu of the Export Adobe PDF window when this window is opened by the script. Unfortunately the last used preset is always selected by default. Anyone suggestions or help?
    Kind regards,
    Bertus Bolknak.

My operators enter the page range and filename into a dialog box. Then I set those in the script. I use the Press Quality preset to start with and then set the changes I want into a export variable. I set things like bleed, marks, page range, etc.
    Here is an example:
set theProps to properties of PDF export preset "[Press Quality]"
    try
delete PDF export preset "Schmidt PDF"
    end try
set theStyle to {name:"Schmidt PDF", acrobat compatibility:acrobat 7, bleed top:"0.125i", bleed bottom:"0.125i", bleed inside:"0.125i", bleed outside:"0.125i", page marks offset:"0.125i", include ICC profiles:Include None, effective PDF destination profile:use no profile, effective PDF X profile:"No Color Conversion"} & theProps
make PDF export preset with properties theStyle
set properties of PDF export preferences to theStyle
set color bitmap sampling of PDF export preferences to none
set grayscale bitmap sampling of PDF export preferences to none
set page range of PDF export preferences to (item i of myPageList) as string
export document 1 format PDF type to (PrinergyFolder & myJobNumFinal & "_" & VerCode & ".pdf") as Unicode text without showing options
I am also doing this in Quark.

  • How do I print to a postscript file with InDesign CS6 without both extensions, .indd.ps?

How do I print to a postscript file without an .indd extension in InDesign CS6? I choose Print, choose a print preset from my print shop and Save. The first time I tried it was blank (the Hide Extension was checked), so I tried to save and got a dialog box that said it cannot be saved as an .indd file (duh), to choose both or .ps. I chose .ps and it was fine, but every time I postscripted it gave me this dialog box until I unchecked Hide Extension. After I did that, every time I postscript it automatically saves both extensions. Not a big deal but it is annoying. I just want it to end with .ps like it used to. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks!!

I have no idea but I am incredibly curious...why are you doing this?
Printing to postscript is a completely archaic workflow. Export to PDF
    instead.

  • [CS5] Using PDF Export Preset from Distiller with InDesign, doesn't work the same?

    Hello,
We are in the process of reworking one of our workflows in which we would manually use Distiller to create a PDF. Now we are trying to automate this with InDesign. My first thought was that I could try using the same PDF Export Preset (.joboptions file) used in Distiller, load it into InDesign, and export my book as a PDF using this preset.
For my current testing example, there are about 115 pages in this PDF document. The PDF that Distiller created is of pretty good quality, and is about 34MB. When I used the same .joboptions file to export an InDesign book of the same original documents as a PDF, the result is equal in quality, but is about 119MB.
Does anyone know why they aren't even close in file size? Is InDesign packing more stuff (maybe related to the actual InDesign documents, or the book itself) into the final PDF? If so, is there anyway to get InDesign to give a similar PDF (in terms of both size and quality) using the .joboptions file from Distiller?
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the reply!
I won't be able to use Acrobat Pro, and my hope is to continue using InDesign/InDesign Server. Since my goal is to match what Distiller produces, is there a way (with InDesign) to export PDFs but to strip out the layers/interactivity/transparency that Distiller does not support? The output PDF will be used for archive purposes only.
    Thanks again for any advice!

  • Footnotes and notecalls in XML workflow for InDesign

I'm a french typesetter working on a project using XML workflow with a large number of footnotes. I have been searching for hours the right way to prepare the XML workflow so I would get all the notecalls and footnotes once the workflow imported in my InDesign file. Thanks in advance to any helping hand.

I wish I could express myself in another language as well as you handle English -- and my bread and butter is typesetting text that is challenging linguistically.
However, I also like to think of my work as setting type, and because I associate XML with robot formatting I am inherently biased against it.  Perhaps I'll learn better, but currently I'm not a good source for information on XML.
Still, as I see it XML attempts to come up with a single source for output in various formats.  InDesign is really good for making PDF's ready for the press or for distribution electronically: it defines documents in terms of pages and offers precise control over what goes where on every page.  This is very important in my work, scholarly material that generally includes linguistic oddities requiring absolute control over fonts.  Meanwhile, footnotes -- which of course assume there are pages at whose foot they can sit -- have always been an afterthought in ID, omitted from early versions, and still the subject of many complaints for their inflexibility.
    Thus two early questions are:
Is InDesign footnoting capable of doing what you need?  My guess is yes so long as you can tweak in ID; but if not then whoever gets tasked with using the masters you develop may not appreciate having to string a separate story of footnotes by hand across the bottoms of pages.
Do you need to get from ID back to XML?  I've already mentioned that getting ID footnotes back into XML is a significant issue, but there are other factors: if you use ID PDFs for proofing but the ID files are not going back to XML then corrections must be made to both the XML and ID files.  And whether or not you export ID back to XML you get to figure out which ID tweaks are needed in the XML.
Software manuals tend to explain what the software can do and omit discussion of what one might wish it could do.  One of the things I appreciate about Dorothy J. Hoskins's brief 2013 book XML and InDesign is her chapter "What InDesign Cannot Do (or Do Well) with XML," though she this isn't the only place she discusses philosophical conflicts between ID and XML.  She also touches on the value of XSLT transformations and scripting for wrangling XML, and mentions useful tidbits about Maidvald’s book since its 2007 publication.
    Good luck!

  • InCopy CS2 Copyfitting with InDesign CS3, Version Cue CS3

Hello. We are using InCopy CS2 together with InDesign CS3 as part of an Version Cue CS3 workflow.  Certain stories do not copyfit exactly in InCopy CS2. They copyfit properly in InDesign CS3, but when the assignment with these stories is opened in InCopy CS2, the copyfit is close, but not perfect. We never had this problem when we were using InDesign CS2.
Has anyone seen this problem; can anyone suggest a workaround?  (Incidentally, The copyfit looks just fine when we open the file in InCopy CS3;  but we are NOT using InCopy CS3, because it causes synchronization problems - it reports that files are open, when they are not. )
Thanks for your help - Chris

The text engines have changed from CS2 to CS3 and again with CS4.
There's no way to get an accurate copy fit using a different version of InCopy than InDesign.

  • DPS integration with InDesign Server

Is there a way to integrate DPS functionality (create, upload, share folios) with InDesign Server, e.g. through the scripting API?
Suppose I have an automated InDesign workflow and I want to publish the result to acrobat.com. Is this possible? Is this planned for a future version?
I found a reference to the "Folio Producer SDK" in the DPS buying guide but could find any other information about this at all...
    Thanks

AFAIK DSP has part of the production workflow NOT inside InDesign, so also InDesign Server alone can not be used to produce a digital magazine automatically. So its not about blocking, but having a better integration of the different parts into basic InDesign.
Whether this will happen in the near or medium to far future (CS6, CS7...) we all don't know, but if they were integrated they possibly would be available in InDesign Server API/SDK too, as the code base is pretty much the same (except for the whole Java interfacing).
IMHO InDesign will NEVER integrate all these production steps, as DPS is a lot about multimedia production workflow. A workflow system aka Woodwing for instance therefore is a wise solution to look at. Especially, as you can start at as low as €169 monthly with Enterprise 7 for DPS integration (in the near future with Enterprise 7.5).

  • How do you apply the same password policy to every PDF document you create with inDesign?

    All,
    Adobe peeps!,
I don't know if this is really supported with inDesign 5.5, but here is my my use case:
I constantly create more than 10 PDFs a day using inDesign
On  all PDF's I create, i want to apply password security to protect them
But in order to do so, within inDesign, I am   always forced to go to the "security dialogue" pane to set up the same permission  and passwords over and over again
    This gets tiring :/
So what I am hoping to do is  the following:
Like acrobat, I want to create a password policy within inDesign
I want all PDFs created to have such a password policy  be automatically applied
I know acrobat supports something like this (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7d68.w.h tml), but, unless I may have missed something, the Acrobat feature is limited. That is, the help link  does not tell me how to automatically do this with Acrobat either (the link does not explain to me how to "automatically apply the same password security policy to every PDF document I save within the application). I think the only way to do so is via "Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management ES", but for non server users, I am hoping there is another way.
    So my questions are:
Is it possible to create password security policies in inDesign?
Is it possible to apply the same password security policy to every PDF i create in inDesign?
If not, can I change default settings within Acrobat ProX to automatically apply a password security policy everytime I save a PDF?
If all fails, do you guys know of any extensions that can support this?
Any help would be great. Thanks!

    Steve,
Thanks for your notes. To follow up on your response.
Bummer. I kinda had a hunch at this inDesign limitation.
I have been aware of the method for setting up of a security policy within Acrobat. While this feature does cut down some of the work involved in creating and applying password policies to pdfs, what I am looking for with Acrobat is to apply the same password policy to every document I save from the app. Automatically. Without having to manualy select a policy.
I think my solution will have to lie in me creating some sort of script to help support this need. I don't think Acrobat Pro X has the capabilities to allow me to tinker with, say, creating a save PDF preset that will allow me to automatically apply a password policy.
PS. I am using acrobat pro x.

  • Single step workflow with multiple approvers (without using a group)

    Hi,
is it possible to have a single step workflow with multiple approvers without using a group? This is for a contract document.
i want to add a number of users based on particular logic. The approvers are random and do not belong to any particular group.
DO let me know if it is possible or if any of you have done that.
    thanks in advance.
    regards,
    rubio

    Hi Rubio,
I believe the behavior would be, if individual users are added as approvers then the system would require each approver to approve the document. However, if you use the user group, you could set the role so that it would be either ALL or ANY.

  • Getting an strange error in "PluginPrefix.pch" while compiling a plugin code with InDesign CS4 SDK.

    Hi everybody,
Currently trying to compile/build the existing Plugin code (C++) with InDesign CS4 SDK on my Mac OS X 10.5 machine but getting following strange errors.
      /Volumes/MAC Extended/Inbetween Extended/Visual Studio/Adobe InDesign CS4 SDK/source/precomp/gcc/PluginPrefix.pch:26:27: error: MemoryStatics.h: No such file or directory
      /Volumes/MAC Extended/Inbetween Extended/Visual Studio/Adobe InDesign CS4 SDK/source/precomp/gcc/PluginPrefix.pch:39:30: error: PluginBuildFlags.h: No such file or directory
      /Volumes/MAC Extended/Inbetween Extended/Visual Studio/Adobe InDesign CS4 SDK/source/precomp/gcc/PluginPrefix.pch:40:28: error: AnsiBasedTypes.h: No such file or directory
      /Volumes/MAC Extended/Inbetween Extended/Visual Studio/Adobe InDesign CS4 SDK/source/precomp/gcc/PluginPrefix.pch:41:26: error: ShukHeaders.cp: No such file or directory
Though above mentioned files are present at the following directory
    /Volumes/../../../Adobe InDesign CS4 SDK/source/precomp/common/
Note : However initially I did not find “MemoryStatics.h” and “AnsiBasedTypes.h” files in the installed SDK directory. I have downloaded them from the net and copied those into the above mentioned directory.
I am not much familiar with Mac OS environment and compiling/building C++ code with Xcode. Can anyone help me to resolve this issue (might be very trivial and related to Xcode project configuration) ?

    Thanks for the quick response,
Yes, current build settings include path shortcuts as mentioned below and it also contains “$(CS_SDK_PATH)/source/public/includes” path in HEADER_SEARCH_PATHS settings.  But still I am getting the same error: MemoryStatics.h: No such file or directory
    CS_SDK_PATH= /Volumes/MAC Extended/Inbetween Extended/Visual Studio/Adobe InDesign CS4 SDK
    CS_SDK_PRJ_PATH=/Volumes/MAC Extended/Inbetween Extended/Visual Studio/InBetweenDev/Projects/InBetweenCS/IBClientPluginCS3/prjCS4/mac
Just for clarification : my Plugin code /project files are not inside the InDesign SDK (build/mac/prj). All the plugin project is outside of the InDesign SDK directory. Thus above mentioned CS_SDK_PATH and CS_SDK_PRJ_PATH are completely different.
Is it expected that the plugin code/project files should be inside the InDesign SDK/build/mac/prj  directory only ? or is it okay if we put it in the completely another directory structure and modify the  SDK_PRJ_PATH accordingly (as in my case) ?
Please let me know if you want me to elaborate the situation further.
