Newsreader

I would like to has there been a Newsreader made specfically for Safari yet?
Greg
Flat Panel Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi Greg
Outside of Safari Tiger's RSS reader, 3rd party readers include NewsFire and NetNewsWire.
Macworld reviewed NewsFire 1.0 in 2005 - current v is 1.4. The NetNewsWire was also reviewed by MacWorld the same year.

  • Pan Newsreader AUR Packages Confusion...

    Hi,
not sure of this is the right group for this, but i just built a new Arch box and was installing my standard newsreader, Pan (v.0135) from files in the AUR, a process I've completed successfully a couple of times on other machines.  Odd thing was, the version I installed kept segfaulting when I tried to delete article headers, a basic app function.   I tried recompiling, checked the dependencies individually, etc., but nothing worked.
Then, I carefully scanned the AUR package list again and noticed that the package I had compiled, "pan-git," was not the only AUR package listed for Pan.  I uninstalled pan-git then built and installed the correct pan-gtk3, which also gave me a functioning Pan v. 0.135, but this one doesn't constantly segfault--yay!
Maybe I missed something in the documentation that explains why package pan-git exists, but for now, it's confusing to anyone wanting to build a functioning instance of Pan on their system.
The package that actually compiled to a properly functioning application is this one, pan-gtk3:

    thanks

-git packages may be providing a more up to date software as it uses git instead of formal releases as the source.
I can't access AUR atm, I'll have a look later. Fixed itself.
Edit: You can just check the PKGBUILDS and see the differences

  • [SOLVED] Pan newsreader - all text is blocked out

    HI Folks,
I am new to Arch linux, just got up and running last week.  Everything's going great so far, I have Gnome3 installed and most of my productivity applications are humming along, I'm really loving it.
The only snags so far are that the gnome-shell crashes a bit too frequently, not sure what there is to do about that, and my Pan newsreader text won't display correctly.   I installed Pan by downloading the package build, I ran makepkg -s and then installed with "pacman -U pan-git-139.129.g459f52e-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz".   It looks like the install went fine, and I can launch pan and subscribe to newsgroups.
However, all of the text in the application is blacked-out (looks like someone hit it with a black hilighter)
When I select a message from a feed, the text appears fine.  But when I deselect the text it looks like a black hilighter hit it.
I installed the infinality font set, I'm not sure if that's part of the problem.
    Thanks for any pointers,
    Chris

What configure options did you use to build the package?
I see in the PKGBUILD '-with-gtk3', so try to build it with gtk2 instead, it should be more stable.
I don't see much development for this appli presently.

  • Any suggestions on a newsreader

Hello New Mac user here I used to use Forte Agent and X news on Windows now that i have a Mac I have had a hard time finding a similar newsreader does anyone know of any I tried using Thunderbird To acssess the newsgroups and there was one other but found it to difficult Thanks for any help

I use MT Newswatcher. It's got a rather dated interface but I've used it since the OS9 days (hence the dated interface) and have it set up the way I like. I also use Unison which is much more "OSX-like" but for whatever reason I don't use it much (even after paying for it).
MT Newswatcher is sort of like Azureus. Not the prettiest thing out there but highly configurable and works well.

  • Using Forte Free Agent newsreader

Purchased my iMac 27" about a week ago but just opened this morning. All has gone well until I tried using Forte Free Agent newsreader. The program worked fine on my Dell laptop, but on the iMac the executable file is listed as a document. When I try to run it it opens as a sort of text file. Is there a different way to use this program, or is it simply not capable of running on the Apple OS?
    Thanks!

I've heard a little about Parallel but nothing about Crossover and Bootcamp. What criteria would you recommend to help me decide which is the best choice? I use Forte Free Agent but it's not an essential item. I use MS Office 2003 quite a bit, especially Outlook, Excel and Word and so I'd like to be able to continue that. I've already begun looking at MS Office for Mac.
One suggestion I got was partitioning the hard drive and installing Windows 7 so that I could run all those apps that are supported by Windows and MS, but not Apple. Does that make sense?
IMHO it would be foolish to install MS Windows on your iMac for only MS Office duties for several reasons. First you if feel you have to have MS Office in order to be compatible with your co-workers then you will find MS Office 11 a very capable product. However if you have been using MS Office out of habit then iWork is a an extremely capable product line. Your iMac already has Mail, Address Book, and iCal which integrate beautifully together and replace Outlook and are robust products. In addition the iWork and iLife applications integrate very well together. And iWork documents can be shared with MS Office users. MS Office 11 is also a very capable product but for most people it's overkill.
While you could run MS Windows on your Mac from what I can tell from your needs it's a waste of money, time and resources. Your iMac has Boot Camp built into it, Boot Camp allows you to turn your Mac into a machine that runs 2 operating systems, MS Windows and OS X. However if you take this route when you install Win 7 (which you would have to purchase unless you already own a license) that part of your Mac is susceptible to all the maladies (viruses and malware, funky drivers, etc...) you were probably trying to get away from. Also if you use Boot Camp you are running either Windows or OS X but you can't run them simultaneously. If you were a gamer or someone that has to have Windows only applications or were doing 3D CAD/CAM work then Boot Camp would be a good solution. However for MS Office duties it's a total waste!
You could also use virtualization software like Parallels or Fusion or other alternatives. If you insist on running Win 7 on your iMac then for your needs this would be the route I'd recommend. However again whenever you run Windows you are susceptible to viruses and other malware. The reason being is you can run Windows and OS X side by side. When I switched to a Mac several years ago I did this and ran MS Office apps which I quickly weaned off of, I happened to use Fusion as my virtualization tool and found the performance good. However after I began using Mail, Address Book, iCal and iWork I found out how clunky, old fashioned and well to be blunt crappy MS Office really is so I abandoned Office! While i still have Fusion and Windows loaded on my machine I don't recall the last time it was used.
My recommendation is spend more time with those links and learn how powerful your machine is the way it shipped. Play with the tools it already has (Mail, Address Book, iCal) and I think you may be not surprised but shocked how capable and easy to use they are. Macs aren't like PCs, what I mean by that is PC's come loaded with lots of useless software that is simply awful. However Macs come with extremely robust software which includes iLife (Garage Band, iMovie, iWeb) and Mail, Address Book, iCal. If you decide to take a look at iWork ($79 retail but easily found for much less) that includes Numbers (Excel replacement), Pages (Word replacement) and Keynote (PowerPoint replacement.)

  • Newsreader recommendation

Since Google Reader is going out of business, can anyone suggest a similar newsreader? I have read something about Tiny Reader but it sounds like it takes some expertise to set up my own newsreader.

  • Google Newsreader problem on Iphone

I subscribe to several Reuters RSS feeds in my Google Reader on the Iphone. When I click on a link to see the full article, I get a truncated (cut-off) article. I don't know if this is a problem with Apple, Reuters or Google. I would prefer if Reuters gave me the option of not going into the mobile version of the web page. The Iphone renders the standard page well.
This only happens with the Reuters feeds, so it may be their problem but I'm not sure. Anyone else run into this? Reuters is a popular feed.

Thanks Treeplant, now I know it's not an isolated issue with me. I did contact Reuters. Twice. They seem to have a no reply policy. Or it takes forever. I would not exclude Safari as the possible problem. I wish there was a way you could tell Safari to not open a page as a mobile page. Some sites do that automatically and reformat for mobile. A big reason I bought an iPhone was to see a web page as it was originally formatted.
BTW, I've been thinking about Byline but I still need proper Reuters feeds.
The rest of you, please do not reply unless you have tried reading Reuters feeds in Google Reader using Safari. If you have not, your guesses are not helpful.

And what do we all think of this moronic decision?

    Steve

I like it. I hate those News Reader posts. They're always quoting the entire message, and they have a hard wrap at like 72 characters or something, instead of the preferred HTML resizing.
Best to come here on the web to read and post, I say.

  • Since latest IOS7 update my phone is getting and the battery is depleted very quickly

Has anyone noticed thier phones overheating and battery direing since the new IOS7 update in Feb 2014?

There have been some reports of unusual battery use after the iOS 7.0.6 update. A report that I saw on my Xite newsreader indicates users have found that quitting all apps and then resetting the device will correct the problem.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Do this for all apps shown in the recently used apps area. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
