Newsstand requirements

What are the requirements for submitting an app to the Apple Newsstand?
Is it just for magazines and newspapers?
Does it have to be a subscription?
Are the guidelines spelled out somewhere?
Dave

Thanks Bob.
I've got a client who insisting they want their app in the Newsstand, but their content is basically an interactive brochure.
It's already been approved for the App Store.
This gives me what I need to explain why it doesn't go in the Newsstand.
I really appreciate your help.

  • Can you have two separate products appear on Newsstand if they live in the same Enterprise app?

A client has two sets of publications - a weekly and a monthly.
We ideally want to build an Enterprise app that houses all their weekly and monthly publications. Both products need to appear in Newsstand.
Is this possible? If so, how do we partition the app so that the publications are separate? I assume we would need a custom storefront as well.
    Thanks

    Hi,
If you want to create 2 separate apps on Newsstand then you need to build and manage these separately. This requires you to create 2 separate App IDs and build separate apps using App Builder.
Remember that folios are always uploaded into a specific application account. This means you'd have to create a separate application account for the other app and only upload the folios you'd like to see in that app.
Do note that apple will probably give you issues if you offer the exact same content twice, so they'll reject the app. If you do want to differentiate between users only getting the weekly vs monthly issues I'd suggest you use an entitlement server.

  • Do I have to offer a free sample on Newsstand?

Hi everyone, I was hoping someone could help me with what is hopefully a simple question...
I read somewhere previously that Apple has a requirement that at least one issue (folio) that resides in a newsstand app, must be made available for free. Is this true? It seems a bit odd, as it leaves us open to the possibility of having to pay download fees to Adobe, without making any revenue from the download itself. The "success" of a million downloads could therefore be our downfall. It just doesn't seem right. Could anyone help clarify this for me? I'm sincerely hoping I have my facts wrong...
    Thanks,
    Marc

We launched a few weeks ago and submitted both a free ampler and a full 'dummy' of our first weekly issue. Approval process was quick and smooth. However, we discovered that as a result of submitting both these and publishing them on the same day (launch day), the system was recognising the free sampler as the most recent issue -- as a result, subscribers in the first week couldn't get issue 1 as part of their paid subscription, and were getting the free sampler instead. The only solution we had was to remove the sampler -- which we did and haven't replaced. Haven't had a problem with Apple over this. Mind you, we gave Apple access to our test developer accounts so they could log in and check.
    Hope that helps a little.

  • Refresher: Apple in-app purchase requirement

    Hey, Guys,
Digging through all the routine documentation and can't seem to find Apple's requirement (been a while since we've dealt with this particular topic).
Scenario: A client is aiming to launch a new magazine app in the Newsstand. They'll have at least one auto-renewable subscription (assume 1-yr) set up in iTunes Connect, as well as future in-app purchases.
What We Know: To be in Newsstand, we know that Apple requires at least one free issue/folio be available to the consumer.
    What We Can't Find:
1.) Will Apple approve an app that has only ONE free issue and NO paid issues available at launch?
    OR
2.) Does Apple require a mininum of two issues at launch — ONE paid and ONE free?
Clearly, the latter would be ideal, so that when users purchase a subscription, they can see the status of the "$x.xx" folio turn to "Free". However, client wants to know if Apple will approve the former.
    Thanks in advance.
    Josh

    Josh,
I know that Apple WILL approve an app that has a free issue and no paid issues at launch (my company did so in June).
I know that previously Apple has stated that a free issue is required for Newsstand, but I have heard multiple accounts that it is either no longer required or not being enforced. I have yet to find documentation on this though.
Even if it isn't required, I like having some kind of free edition available so that users can see your magazine before they purchase it. Even if it's only a few articles, the gesture is appricated by users. So I would submit the app with the free edition and the in-app purchase requests for the subscription and the first single edition at the same time so that as soon as the app and the in-app purchases are approved, you can activate the paid edition from the DPS dashboard.
    Good luck

  • Can't test development newsstand app

    Hi there,
Having recently acquired the enterprise functionality we'd like to upgrade our existing (multi folio with iTunes subscription) newsstand iPad/iPhone app to feature a custom storefront. We've been advised that this requires us to create a completely new build (the storefront functionality is not available in the App Builder for the current version of the app). I've created a new build with storefront, using an adaptation of the sample files here HTML implementation of the DPS default library | Adobe Developer Connection.
This seems to work locally (desktop browser), with the AdobeLibraryAPI.js include commented out; 'core' includes (jquery, underscore, backbone, fastclick, main.js) are kept locally, the rest of the files (that sample has an MVC-type structure) are served from a publicly accesible web server.
If I uncomment AdobeLibraryAPI.js, zip everything up and include it in my DPS build, it results in a development IPA file that won't install - it looks like it will sync to an iPad, however it never completes, and all I see in newsstand is a greyed out icon. If I remove the storefront from the build it will copy across fine.
Are there any obvious gotchas I might be missing, or can anyone recommend a way to debug this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
      Thanks,
    Toby

Ah, I think this is probably a problem all of my own devising - if I just use that sample zip, as provided, it works!
I will have to figure this one out myself...

  • Prepping DPS app for newsstand

    Hi there
I was in the final steps of submitted our magazine app and set up the newsstand options in iTunes Connect. When I attempted to upload the app with Application Loader I got a warning that the info.plist file was missing certain information for newsstand. This file is inside the app package and had already been generated when making the app.
I tried to edit it manually but it didn't work.
Question: Is there something I should be doing when exporting the app from DPS to somehow flag or ready it for newsstand so that these lines of code are already present?
Failing that, does anyone know of a safe and relaible way to update the info.plist file? I have TextWrangler but may have been placing the code in the wrong places.
    thanks for the help!
    Steve

Choose the Pro companion guide PDF from the Help menu in DPS App Builder. There are quite a few steps.
In iTunes Provisioning Portal, select the App ID and click Configure. Select Newsstand. Rebuild your mobileprovision files, which contain the new App ID settings you just configured. Also create push certificates, which are required for Newsstand.
Chime in if you get stuck.

  • Entitlement(free)+iTunes(free Subscription)+Newsstand?

    Hello,
i'm not really sure about what has been happening.
We had our first app in the App Store with the following Settings:
    Multi-Folio App v24
    Entitlement + iTunes Subscription
    Newsstand
Via the Entitlement it was possible to get free access to all issues by signing up.
Since we've wanted to put the client's magazine in the newsstand - we also had to make every issue available for free by subscribing viaiTunes.
    it worked.
We've been updating this App recently (we've got it approved) and we made another App for the same client based on the settings of the approved first one.
Then Apple rejected the second App, because the free iTunes Subscription does not work anymore. We found out the same problem appeared on the first one (approved!).
Has something happened with the inApp Purchases-System?
We want to keep publishing the .folios as Retail, but for free.* (that there's a reason for subcribing via Entitlement)
So: Is it possible to have
A Newsstand App, All Content is available for free, but it requires either a Account in the Entitlement or iTunes Subscription for Authorization ???
Or is it only possible to publish Retail folios if you charge customers for it?

  • Upload To Newsstand

    Hi,
When uploading to newsstand there are few options on the DPS builder like multi folio with entitlement (I do not have subscription yet).
And on Apple site the is a requirement for a sample issue in the in app purchase section.
Is there a guide how to upload from the DPS to the AppStore?
    Thanks a lot!

Are you DPS enterprise or Professional user?
Multi Folio with Entitlement (Enterprise only)- Create a viewer app that uses a custom entitlement server to determine which customers can download content. If you select this option, you use your own subscription service. Consult with Apple. Entitlement only apps cannot be enabled for Newsstand and Multi Folio with iTunes Subscription - Create a viewer app that uses the Apple App Store subscription model. You can create either paid or free subscription.
If you are professional customer select Multi-issue with iTunes subscription.
Below is the link to follow how to create viewer for iPad which you can follow:

  • Why is my magazine appearing fade on the newsstand

    Hi,
I updated the DPS tools to the latest one. I used v28 to create 2 magazines apps for the newsstand.  This is not my first time. I followed all the required steps but to my surprise when I downloaded the developer copy to test on my ipad. the attached screenshot is what I got. My magazines appear fade. When I tap on them, none of them open up.
Please note that, I have ios7 running and the version is iOS 7.0.4, I use MAC OS X 10.8.4, My apps are all up to date. My iOS Membership Certificate is expiring but I will be renewing it shortly.
What could have caused this behaviour of my magazine app apprearing fade on the newsstand.
    Please I await your reply,

This is just indicative that the install hasn't/is unable to complete.
How are you installing your .ipa's? I would suggest using the iPhone Configuration Utility, which should generate some kind of error if it doesn't successfully install. My knee-jerk guess would be that one of your certificate files is invalid.

  • HT4943 Newsstand w/o internet connection

When I am using newsstand on my ipad without an internet connection, my magazines crash within seconds of opening in the app. If the internet is connected, everything works fine. This has only happened since downloading the newest OS. I update and download all recent magazine issues when I am connected, but I only read them when I am not connected (on the bus, on planes, on trips, etc.), so this is a major problem for me.

You do not need an internet connection to complete the BASE install.  You will, however, require an internet connection aftwerwards to install DE, and other applications.
As a start, I would connect to the router via Ethernet Cable and once I have my PC working as I wanted it, look for ways and means to use the wireless card.
I would recommend that you follow the Archwiki Official Installation Guide (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tall_Guide) or this http://home.comcast.net/~pudges-place/a … page1.html
    Welcome to ARCH!

  • Can I get Newsstand on my MAC?

I have Newsstand on my iPhone 4s and would like to have it on the MAC I purchased yesterday so I can read my subscriptions and books.  I cannot find it on the App Store.  This would be a great feature.  Am I looking in the wrong place for the Newsstand app?

    Hi...
You need to have Lion v10.7.2 installed in order to setup iCloud.
    LIon minimum requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

  • Viewing Newsstand magazines offline?

Is this application specific?  I recently subscribed to Men's Fitness only to find out you have to have an internet connection to view the magazines.  Even after you've downloaded them from the web.  I planned on downloading a bunch of issues for a road trip but now it looks like I'll have to tether.
Is this the case for most of the Newsstand magazines?  If so, I'll have to reconsider purchasing them.
    Thanks,
    Nick

Is this the case for most of the Newsstand magazines?
No, if anything your case is unusual - I'd make sure with the people at Men's Fitness that the app requires a live connection, as it really defeats the purpose of a magazine (and of Newstand, which in theory downloads the content as soon as it is pushed rather than waiting for you to download). Some features may require online access - for instance, the videos in the NYTimes app are links and require an Internet connection, as downloading those every day would require time and space. National Geographic, on the other hand, includes even the videos in the download, so everything can be read offline.
Are you sure you downloaded the entire magazine?

  • Newsstand, Please update your app

I just bought a subscription (yearly) to Chelsea FC Magazine.  When I go to download the July issue, it tells me:
Please update your app (Newsstand) This issue is available for download, but requires a newer version of the app.  Please update you app from the App Store.
No update to Newsstand is available?

Ok. Try giving your iPad a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot. Maybe rebooting will allow the magazine to see 'hey, it's updated'.

  • Newsstand: Landscape Cover Preview possible?

    Hi,
we are developing a multi-issue Newsstand-App. Our magazine is landscape only. Despite several attempts i can neither make the generic preview cover nor the actual cover show up in landscape-orientation in Newsstand.
Here is a preview of our actual cover in sandbox-mode:
We would like to have the preview cover in landscape (like our generic cover for approval):
(above shown: our generic cover 128 x 96 pixels)
Viewer Builder does not accept this landscape cover, only portrait 96 x 128 Pixel:
Apple does seem to support landscape in iTunesConnect for the generic cover, but Viewer-Builder seems to override those settings.
Furthermore, the actual cover (after you opened your Magazine in Newsstand) is in portrait-mode despite what you upload in iTunes:
Does anyone has a hint or clue how to get the preview right for horizontal orientation only magazines (no portrait view included)?
Any help would be most welcome. Thanks so much in adavance,
    Andreas

Thanks so much. I tried it first thing in the morning. Result: if i select Newspaper (Zeitung) instead of magazine, Viewer Bilder does not support a landscape image neither. Here is a screenshot:
Both options Newspaper and Magazine require a portrait image (96 x 128 pixels).
There seems to be a workarund since Newsstand accepts transparency in generic covers. But it is not entirely satisfying:
(above shown: a generic cover with transparency. (96 x 128 pixels, upper part transpararent)
After the shadow is applied in newstand:
The shadow applied by Apple is sort of a bummer for this workaround. And it looks kinda hideous.
Any clues or workarounds? Thanks so much in advance,
    Andreas

  • Publishing second magazine issue into Newsstand?

I want to publish our second Free magazine issue into Newsstand. I have a multi-issue App with free subscription.
When I build the new second issue in Folio Builder, do I use the same App Builder Product ID as I did in the App Builder for the Folio Producer Product ID?
    See attached screen shot.
If so, then when I push the blue Publish button inside Folio Producer, this second issue should show up inside the Viewer and all current subscribers would get a notification about this new Free second issue

No, the product ID your specify in App builder while creating the app does not relate to the folio/issue product ID at all. The Product ID in the app builder is the subscription product ID and should match and corresponds exactly to the product ID of your Free-subscription/Auto-renewable subscription in-app purchase in iTunes Connect.
Whereas, the product ID required when publishing the folio is a unique product ID for all folios/issues. No two folio/issue product ID can be the same unless it's a rendition folio.
In your case, since your second issue is a free issue, you can specify any product ID you want. I suggest you to use the Reverse product ID naming convention : com.domain.publisher.issue
    Example:
    If Domain = www.mydomain.com
    Publisher = ABC Inc
    Folio/Issue to publish = November2012
Then, your product ID = com.mydomain.abc.november2012
    Hope this helps everyone!
