Nex-5, PSElements 8, camera raw 6.3

So I was patient and waited for the new camera raw update.
I downloaded the 6.3 version that said it was for Elements 8.
When I run it, it says "not for this version" or something like that and quits.
Can someone give me a link to one that actually works?
My stuff:
Sony Nex-5
PSElements 8.0, Organizer 8.0
Windows 7 ultimate x64
TIA

Actually, It was a little messier.
After clicking the install, it turns out that it didn't place the camera Raw file in the right place. Had to go to program files (x86)/adobe/elements and Organizer. Then I looked for all the "file formats" folders. Then I inserted the camera_raw.8BI it into both the organizer and the elements directories (in plug-ins). Just to be on the safe side I put it in the local folder's plugins/file formats too. I put it pretty much anywhere there was a File Formats directory.
Once that was done, I used Organizer to open an ARW. It worked! Then I selected edit with Elements. It brought up Camera Raw! Did a save from there and Presto! Elements opened the picture for the first time. Sigh...
So now I can get them open, mess with them, and output them to a format that the rest of the world can recognize.
Again thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • Use Camera RAW with Sony Nex-3

    Hey Guys!
I want to get out more details from my photos.
    Im using Adobe Photoshop CS5
Sony NEX-3 Compact Camera (listed in the camera raw compatibility list)
First i changed the cameras picture format from jpg to RAW & made some photos.
At home i tried to open the files with Camera Raw. Doesnt work. The sony camera saved the pictures as an ARW File.
So i downloaded Adobe DNG Converter. I converted the ARW into a RAW file and opened it with camera raw.
So far so good! I opended the RAW picture with Photoshop. Just for testing with 8 & also 16 bit. Does my camera support 16bit?
I compared the RAW File with the new created jpg.
Normaly the quality of the raw file should be much better than the compressed jpg i think.
I took a look at some other jpg pictures (i shot them in JPG Mode) & compared them with the RAW Images (RAW Mode).
I saw absolutely no difference between RAW & JPG.
I also tried a exact tonal value correction at both images.
Same with other picture corrections. Details, Noise, Sharpness.... same.
With the Sony NEX-3 there also was a RAW Program included which opens the ARW Files.
I cant see some differences between RAW & jpg here too.
    What I am doing wrong?
I have to say that i am an camera raw beginner. I tried this for the first time. I thought this would be easier!
At the screenshot below you see a JPG picture on the left & a 16bit DNG on the right.
    I found no differences!
I would be very happy about your help and some good advices.
    Best regards Andi

Basicly i understand how RAW works. But im still wondering why i cant see just only a very little difference to my jpg Images.
The image of the Mountain Railway Station i postet has a lot of dark shadow areas & details.
I´m also wondering why these chromatic aberrations are shown in the RAW file? I thought its only in the jpg images because of the compression.
Your raw file may be 12 or 14 bit, and have no output colour space - it is only limited by its physical characteristics and analogue-to-digital converters. You should set Camera Raw for the biggest workspace necessary, which in my case is 16 bit AdobeRGB. Others work in ProPhotoRGB—it's a personal choice. This has the effect of constraining the raw data, and you will learn to use the sliders to work within those constraints.
Using normal processing settings there will only be subtle differences between the conversion preview and the camera JPEG. The tonal response will be slightly different, seeming slightly lighter or darker, and the colours' hue/saturation will be slightly different too. Also, depending on the camera, automatic distortion/vignette/aberration correction will be missing. This is all to be expected, and your expectations have been misplaced.
However, this is only a starting point. Whilst JPEG shooters can go on to process their images, the resulting quality will be inferior; JPEG is a finished image format. Raw shooters have much more to play with, and can manipulate the conversion's parameters to boost shadows, recover highlights, adjust mean exposure, increase/reduce/localise sharpening and noise control, apply processing gradients and masks, apply local contrast and selective saturation boosts, and correct your camera's colour response, as well as apply lens defect corrections—all before the conversion to JPEG.
So, you won't start to see the difference until you start to push these adjustments. You have been given a second (and a third and a fourth...) chance to create your JPEG using your own set of picture parameters, and the ability to change these parameters for each photo after taking the photo.
In your photo above, you can bring out detail in the shadows by boosting Fill and Blacks. As you shot in Raw, you will have a good amount of tonal resolution recorded in the shadows (assuming you didn't underexpose in the first place), which would be absent from a JPEG. You also have the ability to change the sharpening to suit the image, and even apply local sharpening where it's needed most (and less where it's not needed).
You also have the ability to modify Camera Raw's default settings how you like it. You can enable automatic lens defect corrections (like chromatic aberration—make sure you're on ACR 6.7). You can change the default camera profile (which dictates how tone, hue and saturation is translated) to a preset, or make your own using a calibrator. Do this and your starting point will be how you want it, not how Sony wants it.
I could go on, but I think you have probably heard much of this before. The main point I'm making is that you shouldn't expect to see a big difference straight away, but the possibilities you have created are much greater.

You would need to convert your ARW raw files to Adobe raw DNG to use in PSE10. Otherwise upgrade to PSE11 or preferably the latest version PSE12.

  • How can I install Camera Raw 7.1?

I have download Camera Raw 7.1 for Elements 10 to process Sony NEX7 Raw file. It comes out a AdobePatchInstaller and two support folders. When I execute the Installer, it asked to download the new Adobe Application Manager, I did. But I still can not execute the installer. When I open the Application Manager, and found the Camera Raw was not there. Adobe did not provide info for Camera Raw installationlike the older versions.

As far as I can tell, the last supported version of Camera Raw for Photoshop Elements 10 is 6.6.

Interesting.  How much is accomplished in the 8bi file without reference to camera-specific profiles?  There are some camera profiles that appear to have been added in acr updates.  for example there is a folder <Canon EOS 70D> in <C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Camera> (win 7) that contains five profiles (Faithful, Landscape, Neutral, Portrait and Standard).  Would acr be able to process 70D raw image files without these profile files?

  • Camera Raw 6.2 Beta?

    Hello,
On a review of the Sony NEX-5 (which I also have/use) at www.dpreview.com there is a section on comparison of RAW files and they say "Here we look at the RAW files processed through Adobe Camera Raw (in this case version 6.2 Beta)."
I was looking around and I don't see it, but I just found it odd that it was mentioned in a review posted nearly a month ago but there is nothing publicly available?
    Thank you!

Yep, there is a 6.2 beta in private testing not public. I'm not sure exactly what the deal was regarding disclosure about their use of the beta in the review...that's above my pay grade, but normally, such a disclosure is discouraged (without express permission).
In terms of timing, ACR is updated 3-4 times per year. The last update was June 1. The timing of the next update can be extrapolated from that. If/when a public beta is made available, it'll be posted on Labs.Adobe.com and announced on the Lightroom Journal.

Hard to say if "many people having a lot of trouble with this update."  A Bridge problem of repeated recaching of raw files  has been reported with acr 7.3.  See discussion in this thread:
      http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1115020
In general if you don't need what is in an update it seems reasonable to wait a week or two; but with this one, note Adobe's security bulletin -- acr 7.3 includes a security update:

Reverting to 7.2 requires some system skills (also discussed in the first cited thread above).

  • Can't Upgrade to Camera Raw 8.2 in CS6

Downloaded Camera Raw 8.2 and ran the installer; it seemed to go fine. But, I don't think CS6 is recognizing it. Under Help/ Systems and Updates, it still lists ACR 7.4 as the raw converter. When I try to open a Canon 70D CR-2 file, which ACR 8.2 will cover, I get the msg: "Make sure you have the latest camera raw update in Help/ Updates".  8.2 is not being replaced in CS6. What's going on?

Install what Help / Update offers.  "Camera Raw 7" is what ACR for CS6 is called even though it is up to 8.x, now.  This is to distinguish it from PS-CC's ACR updates which are designated as "Camera Raw 8".  Despite the Updates designations being different numeric versions they are indeed the same update which will be ACR 8.3, by now.
I have PSElements-11, PS-CS6 and PS-CC on my computer and I have Camera Raw, Camera Raw 7 and Camera Raw 8 as ACR updates that are checked for.  If there was only ever one ACR update checked for and offered you couldn't update ACR for various products.
On a Windows 7 64-bit system there should be two CR plug-ins, one for the 32-bit version of PS under Program Files (x86) and one for the 64-bit PS under Program Files.  Is it possible that you only have the 32-bit or 64-bit version of PS-CS6 installed or were there actually two Camera Raw.8bi files for CS6 and you only mentioned one?  If there was indeed only one, then perhaps something isn't isntalled entirely correctly and that is stopping the updates from working.  The only way to fix that would be to uninstall CS6 entirely, then re-install it which should put both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions on including the two ACR 7.x plug-ins, then do a Help / Updates and install the latest ACR 8.3 update.
But before you do all that what does running Help / Updates do with Camera Raw 7 as the selected update?  Does that complete or does it fail?

    http://www.apertureexpert.com/tips/2012/10/24/digital-camera-raw-compatibility-u pdate-401-for-aperture-3-a.html

I cannot fathom why a RAW update is not compatible with all versions of Aperture 3. This is forced redundancy in my opinion. Not happy...
I understand that this is annoying for you, but it is part of the redesign of MacOS to make it more efficient and not to waste disk space on redundant installations.
The recent raw update - as I see it - is an update to Mac OS X 10.8.x, not to Aperture. Since Mac OS X Lion Apple has started to migrate the raw support directly to the OS, so they do not need to install the raw support as update to many different applications. I have not checked yet - is this update included in Lion as well? I sincerely hope so.
Send feedback to Apple that you need this upgraded raw support also available in Snow Leopard.

  • Lightroom Controls Added to Camera Raw?

I noticed this in the information provided for Camera Raw 4.5:
"However, at this time Camera Raw 4.5 is unable to support further adjustments to the following settings or tools:
    Clone/Heal Opacity
    Post Crop Vignette
    Graduated Filter Adjustment
    Local Adjustment Brush"
Will these Lightroom settings and tools eventually (soon, I hope) be added to Camera Raw? Or will those who want the full Lightroom-style tools need to migrate to Lightroom?

    > ... what was hilarious to me is your telling TK and his team in public, in effect, that a huge chunk of their efforts was in effect wasted because all you need is Photoshop Elements. That's why I laughed.
Keep laughing -- I'm confident the Adobe team got my point while you obviously did not ... which was:
    > I imagine that might not be true depending on what the image requires. (post#20)
... which implies that a full version, or the current version of ACR is not always required.
    Regarding:

True enough, but your previous statement:

    would imply
it's the software that makes the photographer
