Next and final step... Installing Tiger! ^_^

Yes, it has beeen a while, no? lol Life can sure get you busy where you have no time to yourself! I finally got a new power supply (Was getting old) and motherboard (I messed up on of the onboard ide pins). Everything was worth it too! Now OS 9 only takes about 10 seconds to boot!! (Is that healthy? lol). Only thing I'm having troulbe with is the installment of Tiger. When I go aheaed and install Tiger it will just freeze at a certain point. Any ideas my Beige G3 friends?
Anywho, must be going now! You all have a great day

Sabrina:
In addition to Tina's critical comments, you may have to pull any and all peripherals (extra PCI cards, RAM, etc...) prior to installation. I was unsuccessful in getting XPF to install Tiger on my Beige. My solution was to pull the hard drive, hook it externally to my laptop (2000 vintage) and use the laptop to install Tiger on the first 8Gb partition.
The laptop installed Tiger very quickly. I'd already installed OS9 on the 2nd partition, along with XPF. Once I put the HD back in the Beige, I rebooted to OS9 and then used XPF to boot Tiger. The first time I tried this, using XPF v4.0, the startup didn't work so well. I had to try several combinations of things, including reformatting the HD at least twice more, and different versions of XPF (the beta versions) before getting things to work correctly.
What I eventually did was:
1. pull all PCI cards (except the video card), extraneous peripherals
2. replaced the PRAM battery (it was geting old)
3. booted into open firmware and did an nvram reset
4. zero'd the HD using the OS9 disk, partitioned the drive with the first partition less than 8Gb
5. installed OS9 and XPF on the 2nd partition
6. used the laptop to install Tiger on the first partition
7. rebooted the Beige from the OS9 partition
8. used the XPF v4.0b4, (verbose mode, no other settings changes) to boot Tiger
9. Beige booted to Tiger and all has been well since
The only oddity is that when the computer attempts to sleep (in Tiger), the screen flashes on and off for a bit and then finally goes blank. I think this is something quirky with XPF and the sleep function. It doesn't do this at the login screen, nor does it do this in OS9.
Cautions:
Don't install the 10.4.2 security update. This update hosed my wireless connection, and caused Tiger to become really unstable.

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

  • Quicktime and itunes wont install. I have never had quicktime installed on my computer before

I recently bought an ipod touch 4g and realized that I needed itunes to activate it. After downloading itunes it wouldn't install, no error messages or anything, when I click on the installer it just doesn't do anything.
After downloading several versions of itunes (older versions) I finally found one that started to install. Then it told me that I need Quicktime on my computer in order for it to install. So I downloaded the latest version of quicktime and had the same problem, when I click on the installer, nothing happens. I tried downloading older versions of quicktime but still had the same problem.
I have never had quicktime or itunes installed on this computer before, so I know that it isn't an older version of the program hidden in my computer that is preventing the installation from happening.
My computer is running on Windows 7. I know that there wasn't a problem with downloading the software, the files weren't corrupted or anything. There are no error messages, the software doesn't even partially install. When I click on the installer, nothing happens. I have tried running the programs as an administrator and that doesn't change anything.
I have tried so many different things, but can't remember everything that I tried. Yesterday I spent nearly 10 hours trying to sort this out because I was determined to get my ipod running. I only stopped when my internet credit ran out and today after buying some more, I am trying again. Please help.

I appreciate the quick response, thank you for that.
One thing I did try was windows cleanup utility and searched through the program files for all apple software, but had none. I even deleted the temp files on my computer, and on my internet browser, but nothing happened.
One thing that I didn't think of was deleting the installation files in my downloads folder, pretty silly of me but I didn't think it would make a difference. I also spent about 2-3gig on downloads yesterday and didn't want to delete the files but as a last resort I did and emptied my recycle bin, then downloaded a fresh copy of Quicktime and finally it installed!
Now I am in the process of downloading a fresh copy of iTunes, the download hasn't finished yet so I haven't had a chance to install it yet but I have a much better feeling about it this time after deleting all the old installation files from my downloads folder. If Quicktime worked after that, I am sure iTunes will.
I can't believe it was something so simple as deleting the installation files in my downloads folder and emptying the recycle bin. I had seriously gone through my entire computer looking for any little file that was related to Quicktime or iTunes. I didn't even think of the two most obvious places. I spent so much time and credit downloading multiple files and my computer even got a virus when trying to download a copy from an unauthorized source, I had no problem getting rid of the virus, but struggled with Quicktime and iTunes, that is why I got so frustrated! I feel like an idiot now :-P
Thank you for your help. I still havent installed iTunes yet, so fingers crossed. I think it will work now though.

  • Installing tiger on an ibook w/o dvd, but using target disc mode?

so here is the problem. i bought tiger for my ibook (g3 500mhz 312 mb airport cd drive...) so i found out the hard way that i can not install tiger dvd on my ibook (it has a cd drive.) so i was thinking and booted it up in target disc mode on my g4 tower running 10.2.8 the hard drive came up on the g4 and i installed sucessfully tiger on to the ibook! i was really excited that it worked. (i really didn;t want to order the cd set from apple)
so i went to start and download updates and it didn't connect. so i went to configure the airport and had a ton of problems. it just won't! airport will not recgonize any networks, and i have done it all to configure it. the ibook sees the card too!
so i took the card out of the ibook and installe dit in tehg4 tower and bravo it works just fine, so the problem is not the card at all.
i then took the ibiik to firsttech (an apple store) and they booted it up in network mode and the card worked just fine! they think that because i installed tiger fro a computer that was not running an airport network that it did not install that part of the software. this i do not believe becaust all of the airport stuff is there to configure, the problem is it just won't.
so to make things more interesting the screen will freeze. and after that when i reboot the ibook the screen is dead. and it stays dead for a while so this is just a pain. i try to reboot it in target disc mode but the icon does not show up on the host computer. i can run system profiler and the g4 will see the ibook as a firewire device in target disc mode, but i just can't see it on the desktop. i can hear the hard drive running, and i get the chime so i know it is on.
so i know that the problem is probably tiger as i know that there have some problems with it. but i just don't get it. b4 i reinstall 10.2 can anyone give me any help fixing tiger?
    THANKS!

    Hi sean,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
You probably did the target-disk install the wrong way round. If you booted the G4 from the install DVD and from there installed Tiger to the G3 iBook you have installed the G4 hardware drivers which are not compatible with the iBook.
You have to do it this way:
Insert the install DVD into the G4. Start the G4 into target disk mode by holding down the t-key during boot. Connect the G4 to the iBook using a firewire cable. Now boot the iBook while holding down the option-key. This will bring you into the boot manager where you can select the install DVD as boot-volume.
Once the installer has started perform an Archive&Install to the iBook hard disk. This should solve your problem.
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!

  • How to install Tiger to external USB drive?

    Hi!
I have external 80 GB USB 2.0 LaCie Hard Drive and want to install Tiger to it. But i have some problems...
    I have bootable install DVD.
I'm inserting it, waiting, then choose language.
Then I'm starting Disc Utility, formatting whole drive to HFS+ filesystem, and then install Tiger to a new partition. All seems to be great, installation finishes, and says that i need to restart. Restaring... And my computer boots from DVD, not from HDD... Also, i looked in Startup Disc util, but thre is no my HDD, only boot DVD.
Also i've noticed in install log when installing process comes to end, some strange words:
    -Disc partition is not MBR
    -Can't set bootable device /dev/disk2s10
disk2s10 - its my HFS+ partition in external drive.
Maybe im doing something wrong? Wrong partitioning, etc.?
    Please help me.

Without knowing how or what was on the USB drive (FAT32?) you might need to go into Disk Utility -> Partition -> Options and set the drive format to "GUID" from whatever it is now.
that should do the trick. PPC uses "APL" format which won't allow installing on an IntelMac.
I think "MBR" is probably "Mac Boot Record".
    Anyway, give that a shot.

  • Can I re-install Tiger without previous systems?

I installed Leopard but I didn't have enough space for my music on my hard drive, so I want to reinstall Tiger, which takes up less space. I tried doing that, but it won't let me re-install Tiger unless I delete previous systems. I can move all my music to my external hard drive and then install Tiger again, but that will take a very long time because I have so much music. So the question: If I just leave my music on my Powerbook, and then re-install Tiger and delete the previous systems for the re-installation, will my music still be there?

You only have two ways to reinstall Tiger. You can do an Erase and Install which will delete everything on your hard drive. Not a problem if you have everything backed up on another hard drive. Or you can do an Archive and Install which doesn't require erasing the drive but does require enough space to perform a normal installation. Tiger requires 6-8 GBs of free space during installation plus you must have some additional free space on the drive - at least another 3-4 GBs. Obviously from your question you don't. Therefore, you need to remove files from the drive to free up space sufficient to install Tiger - roughly 9-12 GBs, and I'd suggest the bigger number to avoid further problems during installation. I'm afraid you have little choice but to take the time or keep Leopard and move your music to another hard drive and delete it from your current drive.

  • Install tiger, then use software restore?

I am getting ready to install tiger on my ibook. I really want to do a clean reformat and install, but will I be able to get some of my old programs back with software restore after I do the new installation of tiger? Or does the software restore only work with the original OS that came with the computer?

The retail version of Tiger is a fully standalone installer. It is not a limited Upgrade disc. However, it only contains OS X. It does not include any of the pre-bundled software that may have originally come with your computer's original Software Restore discs. For example, AppleWorks may have come pre-installed on your computer. The Tiger retail installer does not include AppleWorks.
Otherwise, yes you can completely erase the drive and then fully install Tiger using the retail product.

  • How to properly clean install: erase, partition hard drive, and install tiger then SL

    Hello,
I am a noob at this, so if responders would be kind enough to be detailed / specific with any instructions it would be most helpful! I own a dinosaur apparently (even though I don't think so): the white (not unibody) Intel macbook2,1 (late 2006) 1.83 GHz with currently 1GB of RAM, but I have 2x2GB RAM sitting next to me ready for install. However, first I would like to do a clean uninstall of my computer (running OS X 10.6.8 SL). I also would like to properly partition my hard drive while I'm at it.
About 6 months ago I had serious crashing issues, along with kernel panics, hangs, applications randomly appearing & disappearing, system settings and options doing the same, fans running high (probably due to the low RAM available), and basically overall screwiness. So, after trying pretty much every option I could find on this community...and many others... (e.g. clean cache, clean old logs, already did a clean uninstall and install of SL, and much much more) I have reached my wits end. I would say that to date I've wasted a good solid 2 months with this.
The clean install worked for MAYBE a month or so, but then it started acting up again with the fans (even without high pages in/out, CPU or memory usage) and excessive heat, along with the apps freezing and quitting (mind you it would be only two things open such as 1 word document and then firefox-- with flash disabeled). SOOOOOO long story short, I have purchased new RAM and I would like to try this once again, but to ensure I don't screw it up this time I would like some directions as to how to do the uninstall, partition, then reinstall. (currently to date I ensured all updates are completed---even though they are no longer released for SL, and I just did a full backup).
Also, I need to first install Tiger (my original OS) as when I went to do a hardware test the other day this was not an option (and upon further research it is due to me not using Tiger as a first install and then using my mac box set for SL). I didn't use my original OS first because....one issue encountered when I had tried to install Tiger was that my Disc 2 (the applications one) took around 1.5 hrs to complete, but when I reached the last step of glory where I expected it to say COMPLETE it instead said that there was some sort of issue with the disc..........of course).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1: If near a Apple Store or Authorized Repair, take it to then for a free evaluation, it might have other hardware problems now that it would be a waste of effort even continuing.
2: The RAM needs to be
    Maximum Memory
3.0 GB (Actual) 2.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Basically what this means is you can put in a 2GB module and a 1GB module for 3GB total.
I wouldn't proceed with installing RAM just yet, not until you get a stable OS X version on the machine, you might have a hard drive needing to be replaced as well which you can do while inserting new RAM.
3: This User Tip can assist in installing 10.6 Snow Leopard, partition format etc.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Software Update fully immediately after setup.
There is no need to install Tiger, he 10.6 disk contains the full 10.6 version, you can either install the iLife from Tiger disks or use Pacifist from Charlesoft to extract them and place on your new install, then Software update to get them current.
4: If not successful then the drive also likely needs to be replaced, if so choose a 7,200 RPM SATA I  w/1.5Gb/s connection.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
    Repeat #3
If your getting beeping noises or "you need to restart" issues, it's likely one or more of the RAM modules is bad. Have it exchanged or swapped.
I advise good quality RAM the first time, if you buy cheap stuff it's just going back.
Don't go any further than 10.6.8 with that old machine, the performance will be terrible.

  • How do you erase and reinstall a hard drive without a disc? I bought this mac book pro under a year ago and am pretty sure i downloaded mountain lion from the app store. Basically Im having startup issues and this is the final step Ive reached

when I start my laptop it loads a third of the way and shuts down automaticallyI've tried to safe boot, repairing discs and clearing RAM but nothing has worked. basically I've come to the final step of having to a erase my hard drive and reinstall mountain lion however Apple support suggest that I install from a disc however I installed mountain lion from the App Store. can anyone help me go about this?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Outlook to iPhone sync failure – Sync suddenly stopped working for calendar events but continued for contacts and notes.   Finally Fixed!!!  SUPPORT TEAM – PLEASE SEE THIS – Complete explanation of cause and correction steps.

The issue:  Outlook to iPhone sync failure – Sync suddenly stopped working for calendar events but continued for contacts and notes.   Finally Fixed!!!
SUPPORT TEAM – PLEASE SEE THIS – Complete explanation of cause and correction steps.
The cause:  It is now clear what caused this problem.  For years I had several “all-day” events in my Outlook calendar (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.).  In May 2012 I decided to make some of them one hour  events so I could add alerts to remind me of the event.  I did this by dragging them in Outlook to the time I wanted and expanding them to the time slot desired and then adding the alarm.
The symptom:  Syncing stopped working for the calendar but continued working for contacts and notes.  I didn’t realize sync was failing until months later when I missed two very important phone calls, so when I noticed it the cause was not obvious.
The failed attempts:  I’m head of a software firm and my calendar sync is a crucial to my business life so I took this on with a vengeance.  From a quick look at events in Outlook and the iPhone I could see that the problem started in May 2012.  Events before May were in both Outlook and the iPhone but events after May were only one or the other.  Unfortunately I had changed several other things at the same time relating to other events so again the cause was not obvious.  MANY calls with AppleCare proved them incompetent so my internal IT guys assisted trying many things.  We tried a huge number of calendar changes and several versions of iTunes, iPhone OS and Office as well as both iPhone 4 and 5, all without success.
The fix:  After 18 months of frustration, MANY  hundreds of $ expense and MANY hours of wasted time I saw a blog that had a calendar sync  problem and it indicated all day events were related.  I changed the display of the Outlook calendar to the list view, added columns so I could see “all day” event check marks as well as times of events,  sorted on the “all day” event column to move them to the top, and for all events that were “all day” events AND had a start and end time, I removed recurrence and then added the annual recurrence back…
After I fixed all events that had BOTH “all day” set and had a start/end time, I tried another sync.  It synced for the first time in 18 months!
Problem occurred May 2012 – fixed Nov 2013

Hi, to remove dummy '_ModGrp' entries, rather than crashing the 'Suppr' key on your keyboard, you can use this basic VBA macro (launched for instance from Excel).
It will recursively remove all '_ModGrp...' folders
    Sub RemoveFolders_Click()
        Dim oOutlook As Outlook.Application
        Set oOutlook = New Outlook.Application
        Set objNameSpace = oOutlook.GetNamespace("MAPI")
        Call CleanFolders(objNameSpace.Folders)
    End Sub
    Sub CleanFolders(objFolders As Outlook.Folders)
        For i = objFolders.Count To 1 Step -1
            If Left(objFolders(i).Name, 7) = "_ModGrp" Then
                objFolders.Remove( i )
            Else
If Not objFolders(i).Folders Is Nothing Then
                    Call CleanFolders(objFolders(i).Folders)
                End If
            End If
        Next i
    End Sub

    (10.6.8 Intel core duo 2009)
    Hi,
I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link, invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length)  and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. J

  • G5 upgraded to Leopard - failed - installed Tiger on EHD - what next?

When my G5 iMac failed, the repairers put in a new power supply and a new HD. But they had no Tiger instal disks and I didn't think to supply mine. So they gave me Leopard instead (but no disks). Since then I have seen faults develop, mostly at login :
    1. sometimes not getting past the spinning gear wheel (switch off, on, usually ok)
    2. trying to log-out of login account - logs back into login account, no login screen (Restart usually fixed this)
    3. having got past that, once - in admin account - 'Save' didn't function in any app (Restart fixed that)
    4. on another occasion, 'Copy' wouldn't work in any app (Restart fixed)
Once these login problems had been fixed (they didn't happen every day), the Mac would function fine for the rest of the day - no problems.
Today - I tried to login, it got as far as the 'spinning gear' and then made a loud fan noise. Switching off, on, trying again, didn't work : I got the same thing every time.
So, I installed Tiger from my disks, onto an external drive. This seems to have worked fine. With the Tiger OS installed there, I can make the Mac run from the eHD, and went through the whole Welcome / Start-up routine. This included setting up a main account, which I gave the same name, same short name, and same password as on the Mac itself.
This has given me access to my main account's files on the Mac's own HD - I can see everything there (is this because I used the same name and password?), but not the contents of other accounts on my Mac's HD (the usual red 'no access' symbol).
At this point I have decided to halt. Email on the Mac uses Mail 3 (for Leopard) so I dare not try to access it using Mail 2 (Tiger) from the eHD. iLife on the Tiger install disks / eHD is earlier than the iLife 06 I have been running, so I am not going to run those either in case I mess anything up. I am running Safari on a Windows netbook. I am not going to risk iTunes.
Now that I am running Tiger from my eHD, but not daring to do much except access my documents, (I can get some email, and use Safari on the Windows netbook) - what should my next move be? Obviously the hardware of the Mac seems to be ok - the HD shows up and everything on it seems fine as far as I can see. It just won't boot Leopard any more.
In the longer term, I suppose the repairers need to reinstall Tiger for me and migrate all my data across? I will miss Quicklook, but at least I will get Photoshop back (PS7 won't run in Leopard).
In the meantime, what should I do on a day-to-day basis? Keep running Tiger from the eHD? How do I get it to launch that way once I've switched everything off?

    Hi
+" . . . but not the contents of other accounts on my Mac's HD (the usual red 'no access' symbol)"+
You should be able to get around this by simply selecting the internal drive and selecting Get Info from the Finder Menu. At the bottom of the resulting window you should be able to select the "Ignore Permissions on this drive" option. Failing that you could enable root (use NetInfo Utility to do this) and log in as root. You then have access to everything. Copy off what you want to the external drive.
From what you've described it does sound like the internal drive is having a problem? Have you tried to repair it yet using Disk Utility? Once you've backed up everything you could try reformatting the drive and cloning back the working 10.4 OS from your external drive. You can use what's already built in or CarbonCopyCloner:
    http://www.bombich.com/
Alternatively you could try repairing the drive using something like this:
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
+"How do I get it to launch that way once I've switched everything off?"+
Select the drive you wish to boot from using the Startup Disk Preferences Pane. Alternatively when switching on your computer again hold down the alt key and select the relevant drive.

  • Installing Tiger AND Leopard

Help! My macbook pro has been acting funky.
    1. It won't let me install updates because it can't find the folder "/".
    2. Every time I launch word, it thinks it's the first time.
    3. Front row thinks I'm not connected to the internet when I clearly am.
The guy at the genius bar suggested re-installing the OS that came with the mac (Tiger) and then my current OS (Leopard). Everything is supposedly backed up with Time Machine. If I put the original OS Tiger CD in, will everything be wiped out? I'm a little nervous about the whole thing.
Can somebody please help? Thank you!
    Jolivet

The first thing I'd try is a Leopard archive and install (after repairing the folder permissions and verifying the disk with Disk Utility). That will not erase your data.
Can you explain why the genius suggested you install Tiger first?
If you can't archive and install, then the next option would be to install Leopard with an erase and install. That will definitely erase your data (it erases you hard disk), so all you have left if your Time Machine backup. When you fist start up the Mac with the new Leopard you should plug in your Time Machine backup disk and when asked, specify that you want to restore from a Time Machine backup.

  • De-installing Leopard and re-installing Tiger

After installing Leopard, my Final Cut Express won't work, so I want to de-install Leopard and Quick time 7 and re-install Tiger and earlier versions of Q Time. Do I do this?

By erasing your hard drive then reinstalling Tiger and all required updates. Be sure to backup your files first so they can be restored after the reinstallation.
