Next song setting?

Looking at the new iPod touch, I'm tempted. But there is one issue which I wish Apple could resolve. Sometimes, when I'm listening to my iPod, I think about the next song I'd like to hear, scroll around to find it and then... Well then I'm stuck between waiting for the end of my current song and keeping my fingers poised over the scroll wheel... What I'd love to be able to do is to line this next song up, as you might do when DJ-ing, but there doesn't appear to be a "next song" facility that will seamlessly take you from your current song to your next chosen one all through the click of a button.
I know about playlists, but, as far as I'm concerned, they're only any good when you compose them beforehand - if I'm out and about or at a party and want to spontaneously put together a set of songs, depending on my mood or the mood of the party goers, then they're no good.
Anyone know whether this "next song" facility is possible? Or is it something that Apple is working on?

There's a problem with this solution, though, because it requires you to stop playing the first song and then clicking onto the playlist. You could hold the centre button on the song you're currently playing, then scroll to your next desired song and add this one to the playlist as well - and so on. But you still need to stop the first song and scroll to the playlist - so it still fails to be a seamless mix.
Anyone else got any ideas?

Repeat button set is set to white= off. but next song always plays

Repeat button set is set to white= off, but the next song always plays with shuffle either on or off.
The other two (Blue) Repeat options function properly.
Any ideas or suggestions?

When songs set to 'shuffle' audio-books no longer move onto next book.

Hi Apple community,
I like to have my songs on shuffle so that I'm not listening to everything alphabetically.
However, when I do this, my audiobooks no longer move from one file to another.
For example if I had audiobook chapters 1,2,3.
Without shuffle, they would automatically flow from one chapter to the next when a file is finished playing. (ch1 -> ch2 -> ch3)
With songs set to shuffle, chapter 1 will play and will stop playing anything after chapter 1 is finished. (ch1)
How can I leave my songs shuffled and keep the audiobooks continue playing sequentially?

10 after 1 is because of the sorting used. Change the 1 through 9 to be 01, 02, 03.
To get the audiobook files into audiobook section they must be in a specific format.

Using skip to next song when set to repeat song

I use repeat one song quite a bit, but am not able to use the forward side of the click wheel to skip to the next song in my playlist. Is this a limitation of the repeat setting?

Perhaps your problem with me is because you have yet to undertsand how this support community works. (I'm referring also, to the other post you added to.) You need to take into account that my "level" does not indicate training by Apple, or anyone else. Nor is it a recognition by Apple of my abilities. That "level" has been gained because other users (which is what I am, a user of Apple products, just like you) have marked my response to their question as having been helpful or as solving their issue.
Frankly, I think you and I have got off on the wrong foot, and I suspect that wound will never be healed.
However, despite that...
If a song is being played on "repeat one", then selecting the "next" button will take it forward to the start of the next track/song, which is the track that has been playing. You've set it to repeat one, so that's what it will do. If it worked some other way in the past, then I suggest that was wrong - a bug - which Apple have now fixed.
So as far as I can see, there is no problem. If you believe I'm wrong, then let's hope one of the other more experienced contributors will jump in and correct me. That will be fine by me.

ITunes doesn't play the next song, it just stops after one track.

I have iTunes 11.0.1. When I play a song in my playlist, I expect the next song to start as the first one ends, but iTunes stops and doesn't play the next song. I'm missing some sort of setting but what?
It's not a smart playlist, just a playlist of favorite music I've built up over the years.

Have the tracks become unchecked? iTunes will skip unchecked tracks, so if they're all unchecked, iTunes will play one and then stop. If this is indeed the case, re-checkmark the tracks - Command-click will select or unselect them all - and you should then have continuous playback.

Next Song Button - Stops the song and does not advance to the next song

I just loaded 8.0.2.20. Now I cannot use the ">>" next song button. I've tried many playlists and rebooted the system - no luck.
If song 1 in my playlist is playing and I click on the next song button, song 1 stops, song 1 remains highlighted in the main display area (list view).

I just figured this out. All of my songs were "unchecked" after I was working on setting up iTunes for multiple ipods. Now that they are all check, the "forward" or "Next" button works fine.

If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

ITunes "next song/forward" button instead restarts current song

This just started happening to me. Every time I try to skip to the next song, iTunes instead just restarts the current song. It was happening with iTunes 8, I installed 8.2, it's still happening; it happens if I push the button with my mouse OR if I use the key control to advance to the next song. I'm using a Macbook. Help, it's really annoying!

IPod will not automatically advance to the next song. I have updated and restored. The Shuffle has the two arrows crossing which I believe means it should be advancing. Any suggestions?

While playing any song on your iPod, tap the artwork to bring up the scrubber bar and additional controls. On the left hand side is a option for repeat (the right hand side features the Shuffle feature). You want to make sure this icon is white (meaning it is set to Off). If it isn't, tap it either one or two times to change its current setting.

Song keeps repeating; doesn't go to next song

suddenly the songs do not move to the next song when finished. I need to do it manually. Any thoughts?

In the past I have accidentally set the repeat function. If you go to play the song and you have the iPhone upright with the album art displayed... you click on the album art and you get the time controls at the top of the screen. On the left there is a button for repeat (looks like a race track) and on the right the button for shuffle (looks like an X). If it is white it is not set, if it is blue it is set. Make sure it's white.

Skipping to the next song half way through...

Recently iTunes has started skipping to the next song when playing sometimes. It doesn't seem to be at set times, and if I go and replay the track it doesn't do it again, so I don't think it is an issue with that particular file, or the stop time. It is fully up to date (I updated it today, and it has done it before and after the update).
Anyone have any ideas?

hi, if this is also happening to specific songs on your ipod and on itunes, then you have to check the songs. right click on the song on itunes > get info > options and then check your End Time if it's displaying the time (in minutes or seconds) of the song where it will be ending. or try to restart your ipod by pressing the menu button and the center button together for 6 seconds, and if it didn't work out then try to restore your ipod through itunes (make sure that all you music and files will be deleted during restoring your ipod to the factory settings) good luck

I'm wondering why it seems that occasionally while listening to my nano, I am unable to move to the next song while an other song is playing. On these occasions, I can press and press the "skip to the next song" button - and nothing happens. Any ideas? Is there some setting I'm missing, or is it somehow periodically getting stuck?

Skip-to-next-song button balky

I've noticed on my iphone that, on occasion while playing a song on the ipod, it sometimes takes repeated touches of the advance button to skip to the next song in the shuffle. This doesn't always happen, however. I also have noticed this with the other iphones I have owned along the way -- an intermittent problem, which sometimes I can cure by skipping backward and then forward. Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Thanks in advance.

This happens to me constantly on my iphone 3g. I can't go for a drive without having ipod crash on pressing the skip button. The skip button remains lit up and it doesn't do anything, and I have to force quit ipod. This is the biggest problem with my iphone because I bought it to function as an ipod too! I thought it might be the smart playlists I have set up but it crashes on general shuffle too.
