Next step in repairing startup drive

My PowerMac is dead (won't boot) and I need some advice on my next move. I get the gray Apple logo and the spinning gear but nothing else. (This started after I rebooted following a Software Update!) I ran Disk Utility off the install DVD, but the Repair operation failed with messages like "Keys out of order", "Rebuilding catalog B-tree", "Could not be repaired", "Invalid key length". I can't start in Safe mode (never get beyond the gray screen), but it will start in Single-user mode. In single-user mode, I ran fsck and got messages like "I/O error", "Invalid node structure", "rebuilding", "I/O timeout" and finally the dreaded "volume could not be repaired."
I've got backups of the most important data, but there are a few hundred pictures I had added to iPhoto since my last backup.
After exploring these forums and The X Lab, it appears I have a number of options including:
1) Do an Archive & Install and choose the option to save user and network settings.
2) Spend $90 on Disk Warrior to see if it has better luck than Disk Utility or fsck.
3) Use something called Target Mode to mount my PowerMac's hard drive on my iBook so files can be recovered.
There are probably other options as well. I'd appreciate any suggestions!
PowerMac G5 dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Before doing anything drastic, I figured I'd try Targeted Drive Mode. The 2 partitions on a new drive I had just installed a few days before show up fine, but the startup disk with my data does not.
Since I can see and move around my ailing startup disk in single-user mode, I figured I'd use that mode to copy files over to the other partitions then use targeted mode to copy them off. But even though I'm logged on as root in single-user mode, it says I don't have permission to write on the other partitions. And as its name implies, single-user mode won't let me use "login" or "su" to switch to my normal account. Is this a dead end or is there a way to use the command line of single-user mode to copy files to another drive?

  • Issues with MacBook hard drive - next steps to take?

    Hello,
I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro that I purchased in early 2010 which came with Snow Leopard, later upgraded to Mountain Lion.  The other day my machine completely froze up during run-of-the-mill web browsing.  When I tried to manually restart, I got stuck on the gray Apple screen with the rotating circle for over an hour.  I haven't been able to boot regularly since.  I tried resetting the PRAM - nothing.
I tried booting to the Recovery drive, which worked at first, but when I would run Disk Utility, the Macintosh HD drive would suddenly randomly disappear from the Disk Utility sidebar during Verify or Repair operations, and then the system would just hang/freeze.  Now I can't boot into Recovery at all - it just hangs on the gray Apple screen.  I tried booting from a Snow Leopard install DVD and Disk Utility does the same thing - recognizes Mac HD at first, but it disappears from Disk Utility when I try to do anything.
I tried using a Diskwarrior DVD, and Diskwarrior does not recognize the hard drive at all - it only sees the Diskwarrior DVD.
When I boot into single user mode and run fsck -yf it says everything is OK.  If I press Option while booting both Mac HD and Recovery show up, but I can't get into either anymore.
I opened up my laptop to make sure everything looked okay, and aside from a little dust, the HD cable seemed secure and connected.
I have some stuff on my HD that isn't backed up that I would like to be able to recover.  So what would the next step be?  I'm not sure if this is a failed HD issue or a failed cable issue.  Should I buy an enclosure for my HD and see if I can get it going externally?  Would that be the best way to see if it is the drive and not the cable?  An enclosure is cheaper than buying a new SATA cable, so I'm hoping that's where I can start.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes.  See if the HDD will boot the MBP via a USB connection.  You should probably have an external HDD for backups or a possible replacement of your boot drive.
    Ciao.

The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my MacBook Pro, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  I would like to set it up to do this.  What would my next step be?

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.

  • Repairing Startup Disk: The underlying task reported failure on exit.

    I'm running a G5 dual 2 ghz PowerPC with 2.5 ram with OS X 10.4.11.
A quick rundown: I've had some crashing and dropouts of apps. nothing too extreme but not as smooth as it should be. I ran OnyX (which I do every few weeks) and it found a problem with the startup disk, it needed to be repaired.
After booting from my Tiger Disc and running Disk Utilities I got the following:
    - overlapped extent allocation (file 12412030d)
volume bit map needs minor repair
the volume '*' could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
I tried this twice, repairing permissions in between (which I later read I shouldn't have done). I haven't noticed any data loss but I'm concerned. I don't have a complete bootable backup of the drive though most of my important data is backed up on an external drive.
(BTW: I'm gunshy of Discwarrior, before that $100 recommendation is made, as the one time before I used it, about 5 years ago, it fried my OS entirely and required a complete reinstall.)
What should be my next step? Any thoughts/suggestions?

Hmmm, only time I've ever seen that is if Norton Disk Doctor touched it first.

You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

  • Iphoto 9.4.2 quitting when pressing info - next steps?

After uploading a batch of new photos, I pressed the info button for one of the photos and iphoto quit unexpectedly. I have 25,000 photos in my iphoto library.
    I tried the following:
    1) Repairing permission and database using the 'first aid' function.
After trying this, the problem was worse ie iphoto now quitting - a second or two after opening.
    2) Created a second iphoto library - that worked fine using iphoto.
    3) Opening my photos Aperture. Also worked fine.
    4) Rebuilding the library using the 'first aid' function - this improved the situation. iphoto no longer quits on opening BUT it is still quitting when I press the info button - so back to square 1!
Ideally I would like to merge my iphoto library with my Aperture library - but don't want to make matters worse by merging a dodgy library with a good one.  I would rather repair the iphoto library first if possible.
I have backed up onto an external drive.
Any suggestions for next steps would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    iPhoto '11, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

When I started my Mac the screen was white with the Apple logo and power motion icon running.  I attempted to turn off Mac then a message stating "Debugger called:  <Button SCI>. Also "Waiting for remote debugger connection."  What is my next step?

Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
And sorry to report that OSX is more Widows like than ever, but….
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • G4 Startup Drive Crash problems

My G4 crashed last night and it wont load past the grey apple screen now.
I booted from an external HDD's OS to try to fix the startup drive with Disk Warrior or Disk Utility. I have a lot of important data on the internal startup drive that's giving me an error and I can't get it to work with either Disk Utility or Disk Warrior. (please note that the internal drive with the errors is always unmounted)
Here are the errors I get with each application.
    Disk Utility: Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS Volume checked
1 Volume could not be repaired because of an error.
Disk Warrior: (This application stalls up on step 5 which is "Locating directory data")
it then says: Speed inhibited by disk malfunction.
I have a lot of extremely important data that has to do with my career on this drive. I can't afford to lose it, so I need any help anyone can give me to help repair or at least salvage the data before wiping the drive.
    Thank you in advance.

I've used Tech Tool Pro 4 before now which yielded some fairly good results, not used DW before though, but you could look here:
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/dwvsdwre.html - though you will have to buy DW again
    or: http://www.micromat.com/
I've heard of another tool but can't remember the name (sorry) I'll ask the person who told me & I'll post back tomorrow.
Also you may find something free online if you look hard enough. Does anyone know a of a good downloadable program?

It sounds to me like you either got defective parts or otherwise did not make the repair correctly. We cannot help  with self-repairs here, the iPhone officially not user servicable, but you can ask for advice in the forums on ifixit.com, a site which is dedicated to those attempting their own repairs.

  • Trying to link existing mac pro time machine backup to cloned startup drive

    Hi
I have recently had to replace my startup drive on my Mac Pro as it was failing. I used SuperDuper! for this, and the clone is working fine as my new startup drive. I then went to run my next time machine backup (i backup to a time capsule), and time machine connected to the existing backup but wanted to backup everything as if backing up for the first time.
So i did a bit of researching around, and found this hint:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090213071015789
which changes the UUID registered with time machine, from the old drive to the new drive, so that it thinks that it's the old drive and carries on where it left off. i followed the instructions in the hint carefully and everything seemed to go right (i had to copy fsaclctl from an old leopard backup as it is missing in snow leopard). but when i ran the next backup again time machine wanted to backup everything.
towards the bottom of the hint, there is a comment about the UUID generated under snow leopard, as follows:
"I'm concerned that the output of xattr showed 37 hex pairs, not the 32 hex digits and dashes. By the looks -- I've forgotten all my ASCII -- it is a hex representation of the actual hex UUID (43 41 ...) and its dashes (2D), terminated with 00. That's arguably the same as the UUID, but not quite close enough to give me the warm & fuzzies"
So if anyone can help me get this working right, using the method described in the hint, or some other method, i would be very grateful. Seems like my scenario isn't that uncommon (changing a startup drive), and it baffles me that there isn't a more straightforward way to make this work.
    thanks
    nick

    3. I am having troubles copying files(iphoto library) from my timemachine backup on to my imac.
That's correct. Time Machine backups retain the original ownership and permissions. So one user doesn't have access to another user's data. Usually, that's a good thing.
    4. I don't need anything else except a few particular files, but everytime i try drag or copy it gives me the 'no privilege/permission error'.
Your best bet may be to use +Migration Assistant+ to migrate the user account and selected data. Then log on as that user and use/copy the data as desired. See the pink box in #19 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • In the installation process lion will not install as message  reads MAC HD 904 gb available this disk is used for time machine backups .What is the next step

After downloading ,completing the lic agreement phase, the next step is where to install and automatically' MAC HD with 904 gb available this disk is used for time machine backups' is shown and installation is blocked .
Any body got any idea what to do next ?

Time machine needs its own partition to operate. So you are not going install a OSx Lion on that volume.
If there is enough room you may be able to partition the drive on the fly with DiskUtility
Are you saying you clean installed Lion and you are trying to move your user Data over with TM via the migration Assistant?  Please explain.

  • User-Decision COMPLETED buti next step not executed

    Hi Gurus,
I have a very strange problem when approving user-decision tasks in my workflow using FM SAP_WAPI_DECISION_COMPLETE.
SOMETIMES, the user-decision step becomes COMPLETED but the result in the workflow logs (SWI1) is blank and does not continue to the next steps of my workflow. I've done my research and checked everything (commit = X, SWU3, Task is General, etc..) but i still have not found any solution yet.
FYI: this does not happen all the time, most of the time the workflow works fine.

  • Hi there, I have an older version of 10.5.8. What is the next step to upgrade to the latest version of 10.9 Maverick

Hi there, I have an older version of 10.5.8. What is the next step to upgrade to the latest version of 10.9 Maverick?
    Thanks in Advance

If yours is a PPC iMac (G4 or G5) you cannot upgrade further.
If it is an Intel iMac:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion

  • No startup drive found?

Having trouble with startup drives. First one (my original startup disk) couldnt be found after a software upgrade (not sure which or what, I always accept when I am told there is one to instal). Booted from System DVD and re installed OS 10.6.8 on another drive. All was working again until moments ago when I zapped the PRam and now this drive isnt launching OS. Something is up. Anyone experience this in the last few days? I fear that if I go through the DVD install, and data transfer that this may happen again.
    Thanks

Boot to the Installer DVD, but answer only the "what Language" question and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn.
Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Select your drive Mechanism (eg Hitachi...) and click "Repair Disk". Then choose the Boot Volume (Macintosh HD if you did not change it) and click "Repair Disk". Post any unresolved error message here for further assistance.
Then select the Boot Volume and click "Repair Permissions" you can safely ignore these messages unless they appear in RED.
Restart and hold down the Option key. Every bootable drive should be shown. Select the one you want and proceed.

  • Startup Drive has a Question Mark on it and Wheel is spinning

After I completed the installation of Leopard, my Powerbook G4 would not reboot properly. It only gets as far as showing my desktop, without any startup drives or the DVD. It is all blank. I can see information at the top of the finder. The wheel continues to spin. Because of the spinning, I can't access anything in the finder or the desktop, etc. But I am able to go down to the dashboard and open Safari, Word and my documents. But my finder on the top right continues to spin whenever I put it up there. I see many of the features of 10.5. If I leave a program open, I can access the left side of the finder. When I go to force quit, I see that the finder is not responding. I relaunch it, but then I have the same problem, the spinning wheel. Tried to shut down, but nothing, just the spinning wheel. I am able to shut it off by holding down the start up button. Help!!

    Perform a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
See if you can boot into recovery.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
Select Disk Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair.
    Any changes?
    Ciao.

  • Mavericks Startup Drive read only

I can't find details on this anywhere. I waited a while to upgrade because Lion apparently did not play well with Adobe CS5. Mavericks, on the other hand, is supposed to. (I may upgrade to CS6 soon, but I like "owning"" my software and being able to use it even if a server somewhere shuts down.)
I upgraded to Mavericks today, and now my Startup drive is read-only. Apps that update their files under system permissions continue to write OK, but apps that write under my account permissions are kicking back write errors.
Any reason why I can't do anything on my HDD? And what can I do to fix it? I upgraded from 10.6.8. I see some people had similar issues with Lion, but no one seemed to offer a usable "fix."
I can manually change the permissions, but crawling through all of the folders to make that change would prove very tedious. Is there a better way?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd recommend booting into the recovery partition and doing a permissions repair
Restart and hold "alt" until you see a list of bootable volumes. Then click the one labeled "Recovery"
