(?) next to a LOT of songs!! how do i undo in bulk?

i have all my music on an external hard drive. just a few days ago, i updated my ipod (which is set to automatically update) BUT i forgot to turn the external hard drive on.
now, there are hundreds of songs that have (?) next to them, and it will take a lot of time to click on each one to get itunes to realize that the songs are still there.
is there a way i can get rid of all the (?) next to the songs and make itunes recognize it in bulk?

I am not an expert but here's my two cents:
The exclamation point means itunes cannot find the music file in order to play it. There are several possible reasons for this, including but not limited to changing the name or location of your music library/songs, or storing them on an external hard drive or device that is not currently attached. The solutions for these are different so let me know if any of these apply and we can troubleshoot.

I just found out that I am having the same problem!! It is driving me nuts. Now I know why I am running out of space on my iPhone. When iTunes say that try to find the file you want iTunes to play in your iTunes > Media folder. If iTunes offers to find others, let it. If it does not find them all you will have to find them yourself or re-add the files from your drive to iTunes (use Automatically Add to iTunes folder).

I'm going to take a guess that you are referring to iTunes match in iTunes on your Mac. (as in the screenshot below)
Tunes without symbols, mean that the file is stored on your Mac.

- Are you saying that they are not listed in your Purchased section?

- Are they listed in your Puchases history when you log into your account on your computer?
- Are they still available now for purchase? If not then you are out of luck

The exclamation mark means that iTunes is unable to find the track on your HD. If you click on it a dialogue box should appear inviting you to locate the file manually. You should only have to do that once.
In my experience this usually happens if the downloaded file is moved to another location on the HD, if the name is changed or if the file has been deleted.
I have always moved my iTunes files to other locations on the desktop and de-selected the"Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library". That option is found under the Advanced tab of the Preferences.
I move the folders into iTunes from the the new locations on the desktop.
It doesn't have to be done that way of course, it's just the way I like to do it.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:

Go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ and then click contact iTunes Store Support. Then find your issue in the categories and then it will most likely take you to a page with suggested things to do but also on this page should be an option to e-mail them. Just explain your problem and also have the names of the songs that you are having problems with listed in the e-mail so they can help you more quickly. They usually get back to you within 24 hours.

Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting that track from your iTunes library and redownload it via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes

I have tried everything I have read on the Internet about sync issues and restore etc and not there isn't a single song on my iPad or iPod touch. All of the songs are listed in my iTunes but are all greyed out, some have the cloud symbol next to them but lots don't and some say waiting.

What is reappearing is just the list entry with the indication that it is available for download - it's not taking up any space on your computer. You can remove it by control- or right-clicking it and choosing 'delete'.
The recent changes in iTunes have confused a lot of people. Here is a summary of the situation:
Only the most recent episode shows when you first subscribe. In the default 'My Podcasts' view click 'Old episodes' to show earlier episodes, click 'Done' to hide them or 'Add all' to keep them there and also add them to List view.
Alternatively, in 'List' view control- or right-click on the name of the podcast or the episode and choose 'Show old episodes' to reveal all the previous episodes.
In both views you can now delete both downloaded or un-downloaded episodes from both views by control- or right-clicking on the name of the episode.
In both views each episode now has a blue circle to the left showing it as unplayed. Each episode can be double-clicked to be played as a stream without downloading it first (so you don't have to wait for it to download fully). Click the cloud icon at right to download it (as you will have to to sync it to an iPod). Note that if you click the cloud icon to the right of the title of the podcast itself, rather than an episode, you will initiate a download of all episodes.

hi, my problem is the following
1) I bought some Cds or Songs through iTunes from the iphone.
2) never synced in my pc, never back up.. (or i did just some of them, since Ive been an iphone user since the beginning, and pretty much I never synced.
3) by example i had 1 cd of pavarotti, and now its not in my iphone, or i got a Casey Shea Full CD and now some songs appear and another dont.
4) now Im doing a full sync in my pc to see if that helps...
5) I wanted to get from the itunes store a list of all the downloads Ive been doing for the last 14 months, but I just got the downloads I did the last month or so.
6) I needed that list in order to make sure exactly What is lost and then find somebody to help me to download everything I paid for.
7) its really weird that songs dissapear from the playlist or the purchased list.. or complete cds were wiped out.
