! next to valid songs

I have all my music stored on an external hard drive, so whenever I open iTunes and my hard drive is turned off or not plugged in. iTunes scans the library and puts a ! next to a lot of songs.
When I have the hard drive connected and reopen iTunes the ! remain next to the songs. Is there any way (other than individually double clicking each song) to make iTunes realise all those songs are accessible, so that they aren't skipped when I leave my iTunes playing.

If you start iTunes without the drive plugged in, iTunes defaults back to the internal drive, so it is best to avoid starting iTunes with the drive unplugged.
I am not sure about the answer to your question but you can force iTunes to read all your tags as follows:
Go to your Music view and select all so all the tracks are highlighted.
Right click in the selection and choose Get Info.
When you see the Get Info window *Do nothing except click OK*.
Beware, if you change anything, it will be applied to every track in your library.
P.S> it would be wise to try this out on a small number of tracks first to see if it works.
