Nexus 1000v: Control VLAN must be same VLAN as ESX hosts?

I'm trying to install nexus 1000v and came across the below prerequisite.
The below release notes for Nexus 1000v states
VMware and Host Prerequisites
The VSM VM control interface must be on the same Layer 2 VLAN as the ESX 4.0 host that it manages. If you configure Layer 3, then you do not have this restriction. In each case however, the two VSMs must run in the same IP subnet.
What I'm trying to do is to create 2 VLANs - one for management and the other for control & Data (as per latest deployment guide, we can put control & data in the same vlan).
However, I wanted to have all ESX host management same VLAN as the VSM management as well as the vCenter Management. Essentially, creating a management network.
However, from the above "VMWare and Host Prerequisites", does this means I cannot do this?
I need to have the ESX host management same VLAN as the control VLAN?
This means that my ESX host will reside in a different VLAN than my management subnet?

Control vlan is a totally seperate VLAN then your System Console. The VLAN just needs to be available to the ESX host through the upstream physical switch and then make sure the VLAN is passed on the uplink port-profile that you assign the ESX host to.
We only need an interface on the ESX host if you decide to use L3 control. In that instance you would create or use an existing VMK interface on the ESX host.

We have app. 1500 accespoints in app. 500 locations. WLCs are WiSM2s running 7.4.110.0. The AP are 1131LAPs.In a FlexConnect configuration we use vlan 410 as native vlan and the ssid (LAN) also in vlan 410. This works fine, never had any problems with this.
Now we have started use 1602 APs and the client connection on ssid LAN becomes unstable.
If we configure an different ssid, using vlan 420 and native vlan as 410, everything works fine.
I can't find any recommandations regarding the use of native vlan/ssid vlan
Is there anyone experiencing similar problems? Is this a problem with my configuration or is it a bug wittin 1602 accespoints?

Lars ChristianIt is the recomended design to put FlexConnect AP mgt into native vlan & user traffic to a tagged vlan.
From the QoS perspective if you want to enforce WLC QoS profile values, you have to tag SSID traffic to a vlan (other than native vlan) & trust CoS on the switch port connected to FlexConnect AP (usually configured as trunk port)

The VSM can reside on a server running a virtual Ethernet module (VEM), or a VMware vSwitch or DVS. If the host is running a VEM, that VEM can be managed by the VSM on the same host or a VSM on another host.

How to change Nexus 1010 and Nexus 1000v IP address

We had run two VSM and one NAM in the Nexus 1010. The Nexus 1010 version is 4.2.1.SP1.4. And the Nexus 1000v version is 4.0.4.SV1.3c. Now we must to change management IP address to the other one. Where can I find the SOP or config sample? And have anything I must to remind?If it's only the mgmt0 IP address that you are changing, then you can just enter the new address under the mgmt0 interface. It will automatically sync with the VC.
I guess you are trying to change the IP address of the VC plus the management VLAN as well. One way of doing this is:
- From the Nexus 1000v, disconnect the connection to the VC (svs connection -> no connect)
- Change the VC IP address and connect to it (svs connection -> remote ip address)
- Change the Nexus 1000v mgmt0 address
- Change the mgmt VLAN on the N1010
- Change the mgmt address of the N1010
- Reconnect the Nexus 1000v back to the VC (svs connection -> connect)
Correspondingly, change the VLAN configuration on the upstream switch plus the connection to the VC as well.

for some reason my vsm can't the the vem. I could before, but then my server crashed without doing a copy run start and when it booted up all my config but the uplinks was lost.
When I tried to configure the connection again it wasn't working.
I'm also attaching a screen capture of the vds
and a capture of the regular switch.
I will appreciate very much any help you could give me and will provide any configuration details that you might need.

Looking at vds.jpg, you do not have any VEM vmkernel interface attached to port-profile L3-VSM. So fix VSM-VEM communication problem, you either migrate your VEM management vmkernel interface to L3-VSM port-profile of the vds, or create new VMkernel port on your VEM/host and attach it to L3-VSM port-profile. -

We had a simliar issue with 5.2(1)SV3(1.3) and found this in the release notes:
ERSPAN
If the ERSPAN source and destination are in different subnets, and if the ERSPAN source is an L3 control VM kernel NIC attached to a Cisco Nexus 1000V VEM, you must enable proxy-ARP on the upstream switch.
If you do not enable proxy-ARP on the upstream switch (or router, if there is no default gateway), ERSPAN packets are not sent to the destination.

Hi all.
We have offices for rent and each has a dedicated VLAN for our office staff and separate VLANs for each client that will be renting on our office.
Each office has a small topology, usually a star, and one of the edge switches has a mirrored port and the source port will be the core's uplink to the FW. So is it alright to put the RSPAN VLAN on the same VLAN as the office staff VLAN? Or should I have a dedicated VLAN for RSPAN?
The reason I'm asking is because, if I propose to create a separate VLAN, then we'll need to create it on the switches and firewalls on all offices, additional firewall rules. etc..

It would be a very bad idea to use a normal VLAN as an RSPAN VLAN. You should create a new VLAN dedicated for this purpose.

Hi,
We are currently seeing issues on a ESX Host using 10G Fibre dual connectivity to a pair of Nexus 7010's using vPC for the port channel to this ESX host which was working fine , up to this weekend. No changes had been made on the Nexus or ESX host.
We have changed the hardware path for the believed fault on a vmnic which when part of the virtual switch cause VM's on the Host to stop pinging, although we still see a CDP neighborship with the ESX from the Nexus, but changing fibre and Nexus ports has not worked.
As part of the testing , the vmware guy was removing this 'faulty' vmnic from the Virtual switch , which is part of an ether channel bundle his end. My first question is, how does the Nexus detect a link leaving the bundle for the ESX host , when the actual physical link is still up , and all they have done is software removed it from on the ESX, as the Nexus will still attempt to push traffic across both bundled links. I know there is the Cisco 1000V software , which can be used at an extra price, but is this the only option.

How the switch detects a link 'moving out' of the Etherchannel would depend on how you have configured it...
If you have used 'channel-group x mode on' under the physical ports in the channel, then it will not detect the change, and you will get problems. The solution is to ensure the config of the channel on both ends (server/switch) is consistent in this case. An inconsistent config will cause you connectivity issues.
If the switch automatically negotiates the Etherchannel (i.e. you are using LACP, and the server supports LACP) then it should detect the change.

Nexus 1010 + 1000v control vlan issue
Hi,
I have Nexus 1000v installed on nexus 1010. The nexus 1010 is in cluster and working fine. I have made network uplink option 3.
My VSM is configured to be on L3 mode. Hence I set control and packet vlan to 1 (on vsm). while creating the VSB too I have choosen control and packet vlan to be 1 (keeping in mind my mode will be L3).
Now The vsm is not coming up in HA. The redandancy log says degraded mode is true.
Is it because, the control packet coming from VSM after reaching the N1010, the packets are getting tagged with vlan 1. Since I have not set any native vlan on 1010, might be control vlan 1 is also tagged one. Is it this the case ?
help needed on this issue.

I need to transmit both the private-vlans (as promiscous trunk) and regular vlans on the trunk port between the Nexus 1000V and the physical switch. Do you know how to properly configure the uplink port to accomplish that ?

I am looking to design a solution for a customer and they run a very tight hosting environment with Nexus 1000V switches and want to setup private vlans as they are running out of vlans
I need to find some info on if it is possible to trunk a private vlan between 2 nexus switches
Or any info on private vlans on Nexus 1000V

Yes, pVLANs can be trunked between switches. A good discussion can be found here. Have you considered VXLAN as an alternative to pVLANs? VXLAN allows up to 16M segments definied though they differ slightly from pVLAN in that all VMs in a VXLAN segment can communicate.

Nexus 1000v Layer3 Control not coming up
For info, I run 4.2(1)SV1(4) as a VM and not the appliance.
I tried this morning to migrate a small environment to the Nexus L3 control instead of L2 for a certain requirement. We have two ESX in the with the Nexus 1000v running sucessfully for months on L2.
I tried to follow the procedure that is in this document. I followed this script:
Created a layer3 control0 interface with an IP in vlan951.
So I had my VMWare guy move a VMKernel interface of each ESX host to this profile:

I made sure that I have layer-2 connectivity between the VSM host and the rest ESX hosts is OK, but I am not certain how you actually assign a layer 2 vlan to the control0 interface... Is it supposed to broadcast on all the VLANs? Or is it a correlation of the port-profile config and svs-domain that does that?
In any case, my two VEM go down and do not come back up once I am in l3 mode. I had to revert back to L2.
Any help would be appreciated.

Since you are using ctrl0 as the layer 3 interface, you need to assign the IP address under the ctrl0 interface (interface ctrl0). This IP address should be able to communicate with the vmk interface's IP address.

Need to configure different SSIDs on same VLAN on 1142
We're having a problem with interference in the B/G range due to the large number of access points owned by other companies in a fairly small area. The various laptops keep deauthenticating, which is causing problems with applications. I'd like to configure two SSIDs on the same VLAN but have them broadcasted on different frequencies. The AP complained about the configuration when I added the Company5.8 SSID below stating another SSID can't be added to a VLAN, but it shows in the configuration. Does any one have a suggestion as to what I can try? Thanks

Policy based routing to host in same vlan/subnet
Hello i have nexus 7k that i have a policy based routing setup as follows for 2 vlans, 802 and 803, to set default route out to a host in vlan 802. i have applied my policy to the vlans and everything works fine for a host in vlan 803, it routes over and out properly. However when im in vlan 802 my host traffic never gets to 172.21.1.237 when pointed at the gateway 172.21.1.1. I can see the pbr statistics incrementing indicating that i am initially hitting the policy but im not sure where my traffic goes after that. I can talk to .237 direct in the vlan but i would like this to work through pbr to utilize all of my other routes and default gateway.

If the destination IP is in the same subnet as source IP then it won't be routed it will be L2 switched so it would never use the default gateway ie.
src IP 172.21.1.10 255.255.255.0
dst IP 172.21.1.237 255.255.255.0
src compares it's own IP with it's subnet mask and sees it is on the 172.21.1.x network. src then compares the destination IP with it's own subnet mask and sees it is also on the 172.21.1.x network so it simply arps out for that address and when it gets the mac address it sends it direct to the destination. It would only use the default gateway if the destination IP was on a different network.
So i don't see how you will be able to do this and i'm not sure why you are seeing hits in your PBR acl for the host in the 172.21.1.x network.
Edit - what exactly do you mean when you say -

How are you doing this ie. pointing it to the default gateway because as i say it should always be able to communicate with 172.21.1.237 as it is in the same subnet.

Nexus 1000V - port-profile for VSM and VEM on same host

I'm trying to run the VSM and VEM on the same host. At first I connected the VSM to the vSwitch. This works fine. Then I tried to move the VSM behind its own VEM.
I have 3 different VLANs for management, control and packet traffic. Is it possible to connect the three VSM interfaces (management, control and packet) to only one port-profile, in which these three different VLANs are configured in a trunk? Or do I have to configure for each interface a separate port-profile, if I am using three different VLANs?

The VSM does not emit VLAN-tagged frames. Therefore, its ports need to be configured in access mode. If your Control and Packet VLANs are the same, you could use the same port profile for both.
Please make sure that the access VLAN is a system VLAN for all three ports.
On a related note, if the VSM's storage is on NFS or iSCSI, the storage vmknic needs a system port profile as well. More info at:
