NF980-G65 ram problems

when i use GSKILL ram witch i have never had a problem. i use a receiver for all my signals video/audio. so if i ever have any thing happen. i can tell. what the receiver dose is act like the signal is looping every second. but there is never a video signal (just a TV no signal blue screen). that is what happens.
now the cause. i put in extra ram. being 4 GB more. same exact ram. 9-9-9-24
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL Dual Channel Kit - Retail.
a total of 8 GB of ram, but when i did that happened. i take out the ram it was fine. so i thought ok well it could be the new ram. then put the new ram in. then it was fine so long as there was only 4 GB's in . when i put in one of the of the sticks (being 6 GB) 2 GB extra it just did nothing. the board works fine for im using it now to send this, but with 4 GB's of ram and there is an APP i need to use. and can't because it won't hold the extra ram. and when i get the ram working i know i will need a 64-bit windows. the app was using 71 to 82% of 4 GB's of ram.  so i need to know if there is something in BIOS i need to set. or if i need different ram.

good info. i did not know most of that. some i did.
i will try 1333 Mhz. i will let you know on this post. if it works. how ever i know that 1066 dose work. the board info.
on the main site. says
Supports Dual DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600/1800/2133 (OC)
- 4 DDR3 DIMMs (240pin / 1.5V)
- Supports a maximum memory size up to 16GB.
i did see that and i check the MSI site. every time i buy a new board. oh and fast reply. im really glad to learn something.
It's down to the CPU[memory controller is build in there] not board.

With 2 sticks - full speed [1333, max. supported native speed by CPU],
with 4 sticks you probably will need to reduce the freq. with one level.[e.g 1066 like its current and works]

  • Nf980-g65 SLI problem: severe image corruption

Recently built new system using 2 known good 8800GT video cards from previous setup (tested in other systems, in sli mode, they work fine)
    amd phenom2 965
    8gb ram
    all drivers/bios up to date
System works fine with SLI disabled. Enabling SLI leads to severe problems, and has since was built in early january.
At first it was just a blue outline or shadow to everything.
Now the enture image is severely corrupted (black, flickering, image with pixel lines missing, etc).
Disable SLI again, and everything works fine.
Obviously I want to utilize SLI, as I bought this motherboard specifically so I could continue to utilize my existing (and future) nvidia SLI cards rather than have to replace them as well.
Reading around the net and testing of the cards leads me to suspect it is the SLI controller itself on the motherboard that is bad.

Passed Memtest?  How many times?  If you mean it went through all tests once and passed, that doesn't mean much.  Run test #5 twenty times and test #7 twenty times.  Even then, it's not a guarantee.  I see it supports the RAM, at least that designation.  Unfortunately, we do not know if the same chips that were in the tested RAM, that MSI used, are in the RAM you purchased.  Kingston, OCZ, and others have a habit of changing chip suppliers and NOT changing their RAM designations.  Additionally, the memory controller is in the CPU, not the motherboard, therefore, the issue is between the CPU and the RAM.  Are you using the same CPU that MSI used when testing the RAM.

Windows XP Home Edition 32-bit - I built this tower to specifically run Pro Tools LE 8.0
First I couldn't get to bios.  Finally figured it out, clear CMOS and remove all DDR3 except dimm#1.  Now everything is running great, but it won't take the rest of the ram (other 6gb)
    Anybody??

When I put more than 1 (one) memory DIMM in the system it won't boot, either to bios or OS.  Can I change the frequency prior to installing the other #2, #3, & #4 DIMM?
Also, I plan on keeping the XP 32 bit system.  Yes, I was told the OS will only use 3.5 - 4 gb, but the software manufacturer said that the program would recognize and use the entire 8gb, is this not true?
Finally, it says dual channel, so on this MoBo, should I try slot 1 & 4, or 1 & 2 for a max of 4gb?  Regardless, the system won't boot with more than 1 (one) DIMM installed.
Side problem.  On a system scan & in bios it recognizes the 2nd harddrive 500gb Seagate, C:/ drive is recognized, but when I go to MyComputer it only shows 1 harddrive and 2 x optical drives, how do I get the 2nd harddrive recognized and assigned.

  • NF980-G65 Sli problem

During games..Like assassin creed II and FSX..My screen will start to jump and flicker some..With FSX its gets to the point its none stop..With Assassin Creed II..It will do it every now and again..But during windows,movies,internet..its fine..and even when I play Sims 3..It doesn't do that..I have reinstalled the video drivers..checked if its heat..Have tryed single card..Anyone have any clues..cause its got me stumped..and the video cards are GTX 250

Let MSI know about the bad bridges, there have been others recently with the same complaint and it seems they need to investigate the problem and if they don't know there's a problem then it won't get fixed.

  • [split] nf980-g65 SLI problem: severe image corruption

I have this same issue in multiple games, the latest to show this issue was Dead Space 2 and Mass Effect 2
I have updated my drivers and even tested the vid card beta drivers. EVGA offers an SLI enhancement download that I have
attempted to use with no luck. I have not been able to find any thing that would fix this, I have even had
both of my cards RMA'd in an attempt to fix this issue. If there is anymore info you may need please let me know
but I want this issue repaired, the cards may not be the most expensive but to me 2 of them cost alot of money
and it is a waste to have them both in there without being able to use them properly.
    Vid driver 270.61
    bios 1.4

I do this as an amateur project, not as a business and do not have a business name or license, it is a enthusiastic hobby. either way if your going to post link to dead posts (your link went to a 404 error page) i can see where you are going, i am looking for help but only getting people making accusations and assumptions, I will deal with the techs directly instead of posting on the forums where it is normally a place for help but not in this case, I was just hoping that some of the actual techs roamed these in some situations trying to help but i can see i was sadly mistaken.
I apologize for the remarks Bas i know your trying to help but i need help and weather i am working on this for myself or for someone i built a system for this isnt my first time around. i have covered heat issues card issues power supply issues case issues and software, i have reinstalled win764 bit ult and it doesnt matter what game this is attempted on it is always an issue. disable sli and the game plays fine no matter what game. Deadspace 2, Dragons age origins, Mafia II, Mass Effect 2 Batman Arkham Asylum, Borderlands, Dungeons and Dragons Online. all have been tested pre reinstall and post all with the same issue. as i start playing the outer edges of the screen turn blueish and within a minute the game becomes unplayable due to the image coloration. I have not set the overclocking switches on this motherboard nor have i turned up any of the fsb settings, it is bone stock. I am tempted to believe that it is an issue on these boards but i would like to have someone with some working knowledge on this particular board that can help me with some of the settings or what the cause to this issue may be. thank you and sorry again just getting tired of accusations and no help

My Mouse lights up. All my fans turn on.
But there is nothing going to my monitor. my 260GTX's nor on board gfx are having any output.
Ive tried everything listed.  Moving ram around. moving the JBAT1 jumper took out the battery.  Pressing DEL and later F1 during start up.
    Nothing works.
    Please help me :(
only 2/4 of the LEDs on the mobo light up.
At first 2 come on and 3rd flickers then it restarts. does this again. restarts. and final it just leaves 2 on.

  • NF980-G65 problem Cannot installl GPU

This is my 3rd build of a PC, and I have yet to have this problem before.
Here are all the parts I have installed.
    MoBo- MSI NF980-G65
CPU- AMD Phenom II X4 955 black edition
    RAM - OCZ 2GB DDR3 (x4)
    PSU - SilverStone Decathalon 1000W
VGA - (Onboard) and EVGA GeForce 9800GX2
    I also have 2 hard drives (1)500GB, and (1)1TB
    and 2 DVD-RW drives
Anyways. the build went well initially. I installed everything, and the temps were good on the CPU. (mid 20C range) And then I installed the RAM 1 card at a time. All that went well also. Then I tried to install the Graphics card. This is where thinsg went weird. The board stopped posting. It will power up to the 3rd phase (according to the blue LEDs on the top of the board), and then stop there. I get no intro graphic, and pressing F1, F11, or Delete seem to have no effect. I have rechecked the connections of every wire, and they all check out. The RAM had a memtest run on it between each install, and they all came out fine. I even went back, and checked on the Graphics card, by putting it into another system. No problems there. I even took a chance, and pulled the processor, and checked the pins, which were all perfectly straight. I am at my wits end. PLEASE HELP.

I just got my MSI 980-G65 Mobo today & started reading the manual.
How many Graphics cards are you running? 1 or 2?  The book states that if your going to use only one PCIE slot, make sure the GPU is installed in PCIE-2 = Slot #2. You may also want to see it there is a Bios setting for this Slot to boot first. The Book also states that if you are going to use 2 GPU's in SLI mode to be sure to disable Multi GPU in the Bios & make sure to disable Hybrid SLI as well, unless you want Hybrid SLI with only one GPU in PCIE-slot 2 & your running Vista only. Vista is the only OS that supports Hybrid SLI. When you use it, it combines the the video output of the GPU in PCIE2 to the Onboard GPU & you must hook up to one of those ports. Your GPU in PCIE2 will not output video in this mode, you must hook up to the onboard. I haven't read anything about Hybrid support in Windows 7. I was surprized to see how the config of this mobo wants you to set up Duel channel memory. Either 2 or 4 sticks. But with reading more stuff here, & other Tech sites, using 4 sticks in duel channel may slow you down & force you to stay with 2T timings. Using only 2 sticks is best for performance & you may find you can run the ram with 1T timings.  I'll be building with this mobo soon.

  • NF980-G65 Must press reset button to get post boot problem.

I've seen other posts here & on New Egg where I ordered the MSI 980-G65 Mobo, about when booting for the first time you may find you need to press the reset button to post boot. It seems this is not an isolated problem.
I read the mobo book while building & read the first thing to do is get into the Bios & load optimized defaults on page En-32. I did that & I always have to press the reset button to post boot every time I start up for the first time. Any self restarts after that are ok. I installed Gskill Ripjaw series DDR3 1600Mhz ram & set the voltage for 1.5v. It booted with ram default @ 1333Mhz. I set the NB freq to 1:4 to set it to 16oo Mhz, I thought it was cuz you have  to OC the settings to get the ram to run @ 1600Mhz. I still had to press reset to get it to post. I know that making any changes other then keeping default settings may cause these problems. I also read here someone else stated to clear the CMOS, move the ram around & it worked for him. I didn't do that.  I decided to load the failsafe defaults, save it, & restart. It booted ok at cold boot. So, back into the Bios I reset all my settings all over again, saved it, rebooted ok from cold start.
One thing to know, The setting for ganged ram @ 128bit is duel channel mode. The unganged setting puts you in single channel mode @ 64bit.  Useing 2 sticks, 2X2GB in Dimms 1&2 as per the mobo book duel channel mode arrangement. CPUZ will verify that your in duel channel mode.
My thanks to the person who also posted about this problem.

    Hi
I hope you don't mind me replying to this thread but it hasa a lot of my problems in it.
I have just bought an NF980-G65 mob., with an AMD Phenom II X4 955 (Deneb 4c)
3.2 GHz, DDR3-1333, 2 MB L2, 6 MB. I also bought the G-skill 1600 ram, I was a bit put of when it came as it was for an Intel pro, as stated previous.
I have it set up with two Nvidia 7800gt G.cards.
I installed a new hard drive W.Dig. 650gb black. when I tried loading win7 64 i kept getting a blue screen with various faults on it.
It would work as far as the grey line "loading windows" and even the logo but would then crash.
The amazing thing is that i put my old hardrive back in and it booted up as 32bit win7 and loaded the drivers.
this seemed to work until i tried to install a game and it crashed again all i saw was a quick message about "memory"
needles to say i have returned the g-skill ram as that was the only thing not in the mob recommended ram.
I am with any ram now and I'm having difficulty finding somewhere that has a stock of recommended ram i.e.
Patriot PGS34G1600LLKA, GeIL GV34GB1600C8DC, or lots of very expensive Kingston. £100 is about my limit.
Any way that said, as you are running G-Skill ram do you think i had another problem?
    the one i bought was GSKill 4GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit (2x2GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz (7-8-7-24)
    Model Number: F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM
could you confirm the model number of the g-skill in case mine was a differant type.
    thank you

Hi. I'm new here and I've been googling this problem for a while and haven't found a specific solution for my problem so I was hoping someone here could help me. First off, I am not a computer tech or know-it-all. 320 GB WD 7200 RPM HD & 1TB WD 7200 HD.
My computer didn't have any problems until yesterday when I left my computer on all day (was a really hot day) and I came home and turned on World of warcraft in windowed mode and tried to play a movie (I always play with a video running) and the video wouldn't display and crashed each time I tried. I could run either the game or the movie but not both. So I checked the temperature and it showed MCP at 95 C. I turned it off for a while, and it went back to normal.
I looked at many different posts and one suggested I try reapplying the thermal compound on my CPU chip which I did with Arctic silver 5 and it's helped my CPU temp a bit but not my MCP temp.
Then I read from other posts that MCP is a different chip but I have no idea where it is. Is it the square silver (one with "MSI" written on it) next to the 2nd PCI-E slot? http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1885
I would figure it would be that one since it's covered by the 2nd video card then it would make sense for the high temp.
If it is. would putting it down to the 3rd slot fix the problem? I'm not sure if the SLI cable would even reach from 1st to 3rd slot if I had to do that. And not sure if leaving the 2nd PCI-E slot open would be alright. I know I'm sounding like a noob; but I really am so please bare with these questions.
If that is not the MCP chip can any1 tell me where it is specifically on that board and how I should go about fixing the temp problem.
I have 2x120mm Rear exhaust fans, 240 top exhaust, 3x120 front exhaust fans, and even installed a 120mm Side panel intake fan which I figured would blow right on the MCP chip since people said it was in the southern area, but it has not helped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

3 x 2GB sounds like a memory kit meant for an Intel system. In the old days non-optimal memory configurations made chipset temp. sky-rocket. But that shouldn't be it nowadays, should it.
At least try with a single stick.
Next comes air-flow. Like Henry says, 'in from the front and out the back or top'. If for example a big processor heatsink blocks the way, parts of the motherboard and the memory will be in a poor air-flow pocket. That is partly your problem I believe, possibly alongside an exhaust fan that is not up to the job.
The chipset has a separate heat sink. If you intend to reseat that heat-sink, you will have to take the motherboard out, and un-fasten it from the back-side. Use tiny pliers if your fingers are too weak.

  • GSkill 1600Mhz Ram on NF980-G65 Please post stable settings here for 1600Mhz

Please post here about what settings you are using to run this ram stable on NF980-G65 Mobo.
Exactly what are you setting in the bios? Voltage= ?  Anything else?
Our knowledge of knowing what works & how, can be greater then what we get told by some Reps.
Please, let us help each other to help ourselves. We know better, we really use these Mobos.

Believe Mike's statement was "not going to gain anything significant" rather than "won't gain anything". In my experience, a stable 1333 is far better than a problematic 1600. With some tweaks, 1333 can rival basic 1600 performance anyway. Should as little of a gain as 1 or 2 FPS at 1600 speed be considered significant? IMHO, CPU & VGA have a bigger influence on performance than RAM. This isn't helping answer your thread's original topic question however, so I hope Vorg or others can come back with some specifics that worked for them. Many times, even with similar systems & components, the results can't be duplicated unfortunately.

  • Does NF980-G65 take ECC/Registered RAM?

I know that it's not on the official list of tested, supported RAM, but does the NF980-G65 accept any ECC/Registered RAM modules?  I can't find information on them anywhere.  Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Your board does not support Registered ECC RAM.  You have to use unregistered non-ECC RAM.

You never read the manual that comes with the HQ-flasher did you?
As you need to press F11 (for most boards), then in the boot menu you select the USB-drive.
You DO NOT go into the BIOS.
And this means? So windows does load or what?
If you do not describe the problem better there is nothing we can do.
I know how boot from the usb I know its pressing F11 after I do it shows the "floppy screen", just to try out something else  I went into bios too boot from m-flash there is an option too boot from flash with the new bios. (obviously with different usb drives)
So when I try to boot the bios version of the usb drive then I get the checking nvram screen.

  • Cant Load Win 7 64 after rebuild NF980-G65

    Hi
I have just bought an NF980-G65 mob., with an AMD Phenom II X4 955 (Deneb 4c)
3.2 GHz, DDR3-1333, 2 MB L2, 6 MB. I also bought the G-skill 1600 ram, I was a bit put of when it came as it was for an Intel pro,
I have it set up with two Nvidia 7800gt G.cards. in SLI
I installed a new hard drive W.Dig. 650gb black. when I tried loading win7 64 i kept getting a blue screen with various faults on it.
It would work as far as the grey line "loading windows" and even the logo sometimes but would then crash.
The amazing thing is that i put my old hardrive back in and it booted up as 32bit win7 and loaded the drivers.
this seemed to work until i tried to install a game and it crashed again all i saw was a quick message about "memory"
needles to say i have returned the g-skill ram as that was the only thing not in the mob recommended ram.
silly boy bought it for it's latency didn't read the small print.
I am with any ram now and I'm having difficulty finding somewhere that has a stock of recommended ram i.e.
Patriot PGS34G1600LLKA, GeIL GV34GB1600C8DC, or lots of very expensive Kingston. £100 is about my limit.
Any way that said, do you think i had another problem?
    the mem i bought was GSKill 4GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit (2x2GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz (7-8-7-24)
    Model Number: F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM
    I hope someone can help
    thank you

Blue screen like that sounds like RAM, or overclocking, or overheating,  I guess you are not overclocking.
I'm using memory modules "specifically designed for intel P55 chipset" (according to OCZ) on my AMD PC.  The only thing is that I had to set up the timings manually.  I was able to set up tighter timings because I'm running slower than rated speeds (at 1333 MHz instead of 1600 MHz), no problems whatsoever.  But I'm not saying that the GSkill RAM that you bought would definitely work though, incompatibility problem is still possible.  I bought my RAM at a local store, so its easy to return it if it didn't work
So, apart from incompatibility, either the timings or speeds were not correct, or you had some defective RAM modules.  Need to run memtest on them to find out.  Also, Phenom II normally accept maximum RAM clockspeed of 1333 MHz, if you set up the RAM to go 1600 MHz that is considered overclocking and may not be stable.
This is the favorite line in this forum:  Check your power supply!    A weak power supply may cause problem as well.
Also try using single card before you do SLI when installing.
    Good luck!
