NForce4 (Neo4) & Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA II NCQ compatible?

I've stumbled across a few forum threads here where people identified having trouble with the Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 300GB 16MB cache SATA II NCQ drives (6B300S0) with MSI nForce motherboards. Seemed that it may have been that the mobos weren't compatible with SATA II or NCQ. But the threads all went cold without resolution, or further complaints.
Was this issue fixed with a BIOS upgrade? Does it affect all nForce motherboards, or just the Neo2? Has anyone tried a SATA II drive with NCQ, or more specifically a Maxtor 6B300S0 or 6B250S0, with any of the MSI Neo4 motherboards?
As my sig shows, I'm considering using a SINGLE drive, not a RAID configuration. My K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI should be here in a few days.
Thanks

Well, since I was so critical of MSI tech support, I feel that it's only right that I give credit where credit is due.
I received my MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI today from ZipZoomFly.com. The motherboard was missing the D Bracket 2 & the external dual-port Firewire PCI bracket. I called ZipZoomFly over 3 hours ago to report this, & was told I'd hear back within an hour concerning how they'd handle this. Still no word from them.
I called MSI tech support & they confirmed that I should have received both the D Bracket 2 & the external dual-port Firewire PCI bracket. The MSI tech took my name & address & said that he'd FedEx them to me. Wow, that's great!
I also asked the MSI tech about support of the new AMD Athlon 64 Venice E3 core processors. He said that MSI Taiwan is currently testing the Venice core processors to evaluate their compatibility with MSI motherboards, & will issue BIOS updates as necessary. He told me to watch the MSI BIOS update web page.
I read a review at xbitlabs.com that stated that the Venice core processor (3800+ model was tested) worked with the K8N Neo2 Platinum & K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI, with only a few issues that should be fixed with BIOS updates.  PC Perspective reviewed the 3200+ Venice core processor & reached 2.8 GHz on the standard 1.4v, with standard AMD air cooling! That's impressive! I want one!!!
So today's call to MSI US tech support was all positive.

  • K8N Neo2 + Maxtor DiamondMax 10 (SATA) problems!

    hello.
i wanted to know, if anyone knows a working solution for the problem that the nforce3 chipset / nvidia sata controller / mobo bios or just (some?) k8n neo2 mobos causes the system to freeze while booting when a maxtor diamondmax 10 is installed?
for anyone who still has problems: a temporary solution for 1-drive-users is to plug the drive to the sata4 port (right between the agp and the cpu socket), instead of plugging it to sata1, which would be the correct procedure under ordinary circumstances though.
i found out that my own system was highly unstable as long as i connected the drive to one of the first two sata ports. the other ones worked better. is the problem limited to sata 1/2 on everyone's board? if not, it would be RMA-able.
but there is another thing besides the instability of these expensive pieces of trash (sorry, no other hard drive and mobo has given me a harder time yet!) that bothers me more:
why is my maxtor diamondmax 10 6b300s0 so noisy? on idle it runs very smooth and is quiet, but under heavy load it almost roars as loud as my old u2w-scsi drives i had back in 1995. could it be that windows or the sata controller does not turn on the cache?
i hope, somebody can share his experience.
    wan-hi

I've got the neo2 and 2 Diamondmax 10 Maxtors in RAID1. I've had loads of trouble as well... Today is my first day without a freeze and hard reboot needed. I started building (slowly mind you) about 3 weeks ago.
If this is actually stable now, perhaps you can try a similar setup. All these steps had frequent hangs and re-attempts.. I got through in the end tho. (Doesn't instill confidence that you have a stable build tho!!)
I have the 2 drives on SATA 3,4
All SATA BIOS settings are enabled (inc port 1,2 settings)
I used the 2 RAID drivers on the supplied floppy disk (same revisions as on the website currently)
I installed WinXP with service Pack 1 built in (is that what people mean when they say a streamlined XP install?)
After updating all the motherboard drivers etc, I installed Service Pack 2. With SP2 I had frequent unrepeatable hangs, but cpu burn type programs and games wouldn't trigger it.
Only office type work/browsing seemed to kill it.
I switched to a USB mouse from PS2, and that seemed to help.
Last thing I tried was uninstalling SP2 and it's lasted all day now. Longest strtech previously was 3,4 hours of intermittent use.
I agree with you about the noisy Maxtors though.. I had a Seagate Barracuda before and that was really silent. These don't whine at all but clatter when seeking.
Apparently with the Diamondmax 9's you could use a Maxtor utility to quieten (slow) the seeks, and a IBM/Hitachi util also worked.
I can't get either to work cos the 10's are SATA only drives. Maxtor util only works with IDE (or perhaps SATA non RAID), and IBM just fails to see them.. shame. I think the Maxtor util might work with some other, older SATA controllers... have to track someone down with a compatible setup who doesn't mind me carving up their machine. Actually haven't tried adjusting when the drives aren't RAIDed.. hmmm.

  • Will a Maxtor DiamondMax 11 SATA drive work in a G4?

I'm torn between a couple of Maxtor internal drives to add to my G4 (Mirrored Doors) and for the sake of futureproofing I thought I'd better go for the DiamondMax 11 Drive (500GB) which looks to be very good.
However I'm having a lot of problems trying to find if there will be any compatability issues with my G4.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi, Mark -
Both of the internal hard drive buses on a G4 (MDD) model are ATA. An SATA drive will not work on them.
However, you can add an SATA PCI controller card, and connect the SATA drive to it.

  • Neo4 Platinum - Booting 2 SATA 3.0 drives in RAID 0

I know I'm new to this forum, but I've actually been searching for hours on this subject just today hehe.
Anyway, from what the manual is saying for the K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard, you have to use the Silicon RAID controller in order to create a bootable RAID array.  Is this true?
If not, then is it possible to create a bootable RAID array using the nvRAID controller?
The reason I ask is I would like to take advantage of the new SATA 3.0 drives.  Obviously, according to the manual, the Silicon controller only supports SATA 1.5 speeds.  It would be pointless to purchase SATA 3.0 drives if I was forced to use the Silicon controller for RAID booting, because the overall speeds would be reduced as if they were 1.5 drives.
So, can I create a bootable RAID array using the nvRAID controller and will the drives be recognized properly as SATA 3.0?
Thanks for you help.  I hope it's not too much of a bother.

    Thedog,
Sorry, to bring bad new, with K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard you have to define  what the features of a SATA II drive has before you say that you can create and use a RAID 0 array on the nVidia nForce4 Chipset.   If the SATA II drive has both 3Gb/s speed and NCQ the current drivers list on MSI Download page, unless they upgrade them today, will not produce a functional RAID 0 Bootable Array.
Many have said that they had SATA II RAID Arrays running on the Noe4 motherboard, but each when they sent me their drive part number provide not be to SATA V2.5 drives, that’s the latest version with all the new features.   SATA II with 3Gb/s speed and no NCQ will work fine.
I have been working with MSI Support for over a month now, testing pre-beta BIOS and Pre-Beta Drives.  Both the BIOS and RAID Controller drives have problem.  The BIOS V1.B and a yet unreleased pre-beta drive will get you a functional RAID 0 running Windows XP Pro 32-bit Edition.  There is no driver for Win XP PRO 64 Edition.
If you are, bond and determined the use the newest SATA II that include all the new features.  I have a copy of the pre-beta 32-bit Windows RAID drivers MSI sent me for testing, that I will send you, just send me a Personal Message with you E-mail address in it and I will send the drives zip file to you.
I will more than likely get more people saying they have SATA II RAID Arrays running, but there is not one, I have not been able to prove wrong.   ASUS and MSI have the same problems and to date both have failed to produce, because the problem I nVidia’s problem.

  • Maxtor DiamondMax 10 No Longer Recognized (10.7.3)

I finally upgraded my Rev A G5 PowerMac and purchased a new 27" i7 iMac - I was extatic! Everything went well the first day while I was setting it up. I had all my iPhoto and iTunes files on an internal SATA drive (Maxtor DiamondMax 10) on my PowerMac and put it in an external enclouse so I could just pick up where I left off. The iMac recognized it right away and I was back in business.
Then I decided to run Software Update and get all the latest updates. One of these was a combo package (I believe) that put me at the latest verion of Lion (10.7.3). After the restart my Maxtor drive was no longer mounting. I went into Disk Utility and it wasn't there either. Of course this rendered my iPhoto and iTunes usesless.
At first I thought the drive died and I was exteremly worried as all that stuff was in limbo until Time Machine could kick in on my iMac. I dragged out my old PowerMac, connected it back up in the tower and it worked like a champ.
So what happened? Is there some kind of problem with 10.7.3 and my drive? Maxtor (now Seagate) has no mention of a DiamondMax 10 on their web site so no drivers exist. I'm pretty bumbed.
    Any help would be great!

In case someone suggests it, I just tried using a different USB cable and it still won't mount.
Does anyone know if it's possible to revert back to 10.7.2? That is what my iMac shipped with when the drive worked but I don't have a physical copy of Lion it seems. I read on the forums about logging into disk recovery and reinstalling that way, but I'm not sure if it would install 10.7.2 or 10.7.3 since that is the newest version.
    Anyone know?

  • Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 Compatible with My G5 1.87 Tower (2003)?

Okay so here is the deal. Have a drive in my g5 towe since the original seagate 160 gb I have been told has read and write problems urrgggghhhh not sure of warranty since I bought this mac second hand. So they gave me another drive the one listed above but the cables currently in the 2nd drive are not compatible not sure if I can do something or not. The drive in question is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/ 133 HD I have a Mac G5 1.87 900 running 10.4 any help would be great!!!!

Just go out and buy a new SATA drive or two from OWC
    http://www.macsales.com
The DM9 is older than your G5, and the DM10 was the first Maxtor that turned heads and was a winner (as was DMIII). But drives have come a long way.
If you only have one, it is overdue for some backups, reformat and replaced - keep it for emergency boot drive.

  • Maxtor DiamondMax HD Compatibility with Mac?

    Hello Forum,
I'm about to install a new Internal Hard Drive in Bay 2 of my G5 Dual.
Calling all you tekheads out there being A1 Macintosh savvy! Can someone confirm that the Maxtor DiamondMax +22 7200RPM SATA II/300 500GB 32MB Cache - OEM Internal Hard Disc will be fully compatible with my 1.8 Ghz G5 Dual Power Mac before I begin the installation?
Any tips for a smooth install, formatting, partitioning etc?
    Just for peace of mind.
    Cheers,
    Technoapple.

I am currently running 2 of those drives in my G5 dual 2.0. I have that setup for about 2.5 years now, and am getting ready to retire these drives for a pair of 1TB WD black caviars.
I set mine up as RAID 0. I installed both drives, then booted from the original install disk (note this was 10.2), ran disk utility from the install disk prior to install to setup the RAID, then ran the install. It takes a little while, but is pretty straight forward.
Remember when running the disk utility from the install disk, as soon as you see the menu bar at the top of your screen, you select disk utility from that. It is not an option in the install screen which will be center of your monitor.
If you do not need the RAID setup, of course you just need to install the drive, boot your system normally, and run disk utility to make sure all is setup, but OS X should see your drive and be ready to rumble without any problems.

  • Maxtor diamondmax 9 160gb

Can I install windows xp on a SATA 160gb maxtor diamondmax 9?

Yes, but it might be a little tricky.
Here is a specific procedure that seems to work for most people.
    - Have only the SATA drive you want to be the boot drive in your system.  Disconnect the power to all other HDD's if any.
    -  Have only one optical drive. Disconnect the power to the other optical if any.
    -  Plug SATA drive into SATA 1  (it may show us as an IDE drive somewhere down the list in BIOS.  That's okl)
    -  Enable appropriate SATA options in BIOS.  Set boot order to floppy, cd, SATA drive.  Set boot priority to SATA drive.
    -  Partition and format using the utilites CD that came with the SATA drive.
    -  Run Windows setup.  No need to do the F6 thing unless you are planning to do a RAID configuration.
    -  Windows should install just fine
    -  After you are up and running, plug power back into your other drives if any.
I hope this works for you.

  • Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250gb

I need a second drive for my G5 and i'm have three choices...
    1. Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250Gb Serial ATA II (3.0Gb/s) 7200 rpm 16Mb
    2. Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250Gb Serial ATA 150 7200 rpm 16 Mb
    3. Western Digital 250Gb 8Mb SATA 150 (the standard HD that comes with the G5)
My G5 2.7 Dual Processor is the standard out of the box machine and i would like to know if my first option will give me that data rate without any other upgrades and wether it's compatible or not, if i get only the SATA 150 speed of the first using a jumper it will be fine since later on i plan on buying more upgrades and will be abble to get that speed up, for now i'm just concerned will it mount the drive with or without a jumper.

There isn't going to be any difference between the first two, except how new the drive is (revision and firmware). Why not spend $20 more and get the 300GB model? seems to be one of the most popular in performance.

  • I I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's.  By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already.  Go to the Floodgap website (they author it)  download it for free.  The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported.  It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test.  That's now my default on my G5's.  Firefox and Safari are no longer supported.  As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me.  The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie.  The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to.  They 'dumbed it down' for the masses.  Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion.  So Leopard should be fine for you.  It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine.  As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site.  As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps.  See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM).  You might find you don't need eight.  A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will.  I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC.  Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro.  The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it.  You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available.  As far as backup on your resurrected machine:  look for a firewire enabled backup if can.  Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup.  Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes.  You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all.  The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00.  It runs nice and fast through the 800 port.  I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures.  They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

  • 845PE Max (6580 v.2.0) and Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus - Problem!

    Hi!
My mobo (845PE Max - MS 6580 v.2.0) detecting my hard disk (Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus 80GB ATA133 7200rpm) as the drive working in UltraDMA/2 mode (ATA33). What is wrong? How can I set it to work in mode UltraDMA/5 (ATA100)???
Please, help me as quick as possible.
    Best regards
    Martin "Kenickie"

System: MS Windows XP Pro. No Service Pack 1 installed yet.
    But it doesn't matter.
Disk is recognized as UDMA/2 by BIOS!!! I upgraded BIOS to newest (3.40) but it didn't help.
This Maxtor is connected as Primary Master, and there is a CD-Recorder (TEAC CD-W516EB) on the same cable as Primary Slave. Teac is also recognized as UDMA/2. At the secondary Controller I have CD-ROM Drive (TEAC x32).

  • Maxtor Diamondmax 20 & iMac G3 600MHz

    Hi,
I just got an iMac G3 600MHz (Mac OS 9.2.2) on eBay. However, the HDD produces a really high pitch noise that makes working on this beauty a real torture. I cloned the original screaming HDD onto a new Maxtor Diamondmax 20 (120GB, 7200rpm) using my Macbook Pro with Carbon Clone Copy, and swap it into the iMac. However when I start it up, I have an icon with a floppy and a question mark.
I played with the jumper settings, but had no success, either as a Master, Slave or Cable Select.
Wondering if the Diamondmax is compatible with this iMac, as the original HDD has a Maxtor as well but has a different jumper pin set.
    Anybody with any suggestions? Thanks.

If you boot the iMac from the install CD, does the hard drive show up in System Profiler? It sounds like reformatting the disk with a MBP may have put a partition table on the disk that the iMac is unfamiliar with.. try reformatting it on the iMac, plugging it back into the MBP, and cloning it that way.

  • Maxtor DiamondMax 120 Giga doesn't work

Today I wake up and I realize that my Intel Imac Hard Drive was gone, invisible, death (I checked also on another power Mac).
Screwdriver, patience, some time, and I replaced with a Maxtor DiamondMax 120 Giga.
Disk Utility, erase.... nothing ! I check better and the iMac recognise an 80 giga instead of 120 giga. Do you know Why ?
    (Hardware check result was fine)
What other HD brand or kind should I buy tomorrow ?

    My bad.
It actually was an 80 giga, but it didn't work anyway.
I've installed a 250 giga, Maxtor DiamondMax and everything is working just fine.

  • Maxtor DiamondMax 80gig support in x86Sol8

    Hey,
We just bought four Maxtor DiamondMax 80 gig harddrives and are running Solaris 8 Intel (10/2000). The Solaris OS (which is running on an 18gig SCSI) recognizes all 4 IDE drives, although format only sees the first 13 gigs of the drive. Also fdisk will not allow us to use cylinders above around 16,000 (it says 'out of range')....has anyone been able to sove this problem?
I have searched many forums and the net, but with no success at finding an answer.

Have you tried Patches -> 110202-01, the solaris 8 ATA driver patch to add
