NFS exports from Mac

Hello,
I have a little home network with a Mac and an NSLU2. The NSLU2 exports some directories (or folders) via NFS to the Mac. Additionally it makes backups from the files its exporting.
Now I wanted to do the other way round: export from the Mac the /Users directory via NFS to the NSLU2 so it can make backups from the /Users directory too. But the NFS export (Mac to NSLU2) isn't working.
I used NFS Manager 2.8 for the NFS imports (works like a charm) and for the exports (works not at all). The NFS Manager doesn't show me the list of exported directories (nor does 'showmount -e' on the Mac nor does 'showmount -e <Mac-IP-address>' on the NSLU2 show any exported directories). Furthermore a 'rpcinfo -p' doesn't show an entry for nfs with port number 2049. I had a look at some websites but all seem to show that I didn't do anything wrong.
So, what's going wrong? I don't use Mac OS 10.4 Server. Could this be a problem?
Regards
Michael.

I had the same question, NFS is so much more responsive than SMB but isn't so obviously accessible on OS X. I found this site:
http://astcomm.net/tech/nfs_howto/server/
Works perfectly but you have to be careful with the Firewall. I enabled UDP port 2049 (nfsd), tcp and udp ports 111 (portmapper), and then used rpcinfo -p to see which udp port mountd was using, unfortunately this tends to change each time it is started so you can't put a fixed value into System Preferences for the firewall. Still trying to work out how to resolve that.

  • Exporting from Mac Mail to Outlook 2003 (XP)

    Hi guys,
    odd one,
just bought the wife a cheap and cheerful wintel laptop, and now in the hope that I can get my mac back for my exclusive use (I've shared for too long now), I'm trying to get her emails from mac mail into a PC format.
I have an IMAP mail server I can use, but it's got a low limit and transferring from the mac mail, back to the imap server, then from the server to outlook on PC works - but is painfully slow.
If anyone is aware of a tool or a process that can turn the mac Mail emails into Outlook XP emails I'd appreciate it. I've taken a look through the forum but everyone (not surprisingly) is doing this the other way around...
    Any ideas/assistance appreciated.

  • How To Export from Mac address book to CSV file

In Mac's address book: How do you export a highlighted group of *contacts to a cvs file* (so that I can import in groups by my categories into Google contacts- that way it is easier to sort/designate the contacts one I get the contacts there into Google).
I can sync them all- but then I'd have to put them into their categories one at a time, there are too many...
    thx missy
(I'm used to ms office and pc's)

Okay, *I got this issue worked out;here's how.* (Unfortunately the mac app AB2CSV doesn't open up to the screens it's supposed to in order to choose and convert or save contacts to a csv file and did crash my address book- which was very scary to see my 1533 contacts vanish!! )
Luckily somehow I had made an archive file of them all and got them back into my mac Calendar unscathed -so I lucked out...
Today at my local Apple Store in Nashville *I was shown a better way-and I'm glad to share this with you*:(They also set up my mobile me and my itouch to sync my contacts and emails too-plus got my contacts synced up to my GoogleApps acnt- so now I am in the clouds, backed up, and liberated-in spite of myself!!)
*iWorks Numbers* works similar to msExcel, so you *open up Numbers* ;get on to a *new blank page*;also *open Address Book* and highlight the contacts from your address book and *drag them right on to your Numbers page*; like magic it looks like an excel spread sheet (you can choose the columns/headers you want to use ie name, phone #,street, city, email, etc even the notes); then you go up to *Share in the menu*; *choose csv file*; and *save it*...Thank you Apple store Green Hills!! you saved me today!!

  • Export from Mac A/import to Mac B?

I want to download to Mac A where I have cable available, and merge the resulting labrary onto my main library on Mac B at home. The help files are hazy on export and import libraries. Is it as simple as download to Mac A, export to xml file, load xml file onto flash drive, import from xml file on flash drive to Mac B library? I would do this from time to time using the same two Macs.
    Thanks,
    Fred

  • Exporting from Mac Mail to Outlook 2011

    Hi,
I want to export all my current mails from Apple Mail into outlook. I am trying to use outlook import function but it doesnot have apple mail/mac mail in its options.
Is there any other way of doing this???

Outlook for Mac has no option to import from Apple's Mail application. The best suggestion I can offer is that you use an IMAP account to transfer your messages.
Get a free Gmail IMAP account from Google and connect to the account in Mail. Drag your messages into the account to copy them to the server.
Connect to the same account in Outlook and copy your messages from the server to folders under On My Computer.
Another option is to get a third party tool that are available online.
One tool that I am familiar with is Apple Mail Export
Or you can find more on
    google or
    yahoo for more results
    Hope this helps!

  • Video Export From Mac

When exporting my video on my Mac from Premiere Pro the video will play but there is just an awful static sound for all my audio.  I have used the H.264 format with Match Source from my dell and it has worked fine.  I don't know why it exports this way from my Mac and it is the computer I would like to use.  Haven't been able to share anything from this computer yet.  Any suggestions?

  • Slide Show video exports from Macs to Windows

I work on a Mac.  When I export a Slide Show as Video anyone with a mac has no problem viewing it.  my windows friends however can't open it.  any suggestions?

Slideshows exported as video will play in the Adobe Media Player, Quicktime player and Windows Media player 12 (as well as quite a few other players, the best being VLC). The first two work on widows XP, Vista and 7 and OSX, the windows media player 12 on Windows Vista and 7. They must have a video player installed on their system to play the slideshows. All these are free for them to download. If they haven't got one of these players installed, other than suggesting that they do so, there is not a lot you can do...

  • Can't import (to Win) what I exported (from Mac)

Alas, I must return to intel and native windows again... oh the shame.
Anyway, in prep for the move I think I did as instructed... I 'selected' ALL of my songs and 'exported' them to / as a 'data DVD'.
So now I have 180 some mpeg-4 files on a DVD, with an XML file called 'ContentsDB.xml' and I have tried many times to 'import' via iTunes but cannot make it work. Indeed, even Windows media player "cannot read" the files.
Again, selecting the ContentsDB file as the target of the import does nothing... iTunes doesn't even give me an error message.
Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

    Dear b noir,
Thank you very, very much for your quick response... I did remove three Sonic Solutions (Roxio) products that came bundled with my ThinkPad and was able to Import from the Export DVD I had created. But now I find that only the titles have been copied in, and each song file must be "located" when I click on it to play it.

  • Remove nosuid option from nfs mounts on Mac Os X mountain lion

    Hi there
I need to use sticky bit within an NFS export, and to use noowners mount option when I access NFS export from my mac.
So I have mounted the NFS export on my mac and performed a "chmod -R 7777 . " on the root directory of NFS export
I have modified the /etc/nfs.conf file as follows below:
    Alessandros-MacBook-Pro:~ alessandro$ cat /etc/nfs.conf
    # nfs.conf: the NFS configuration file
    nfs.client.mount.options=nodev,noowners
when i mount the export using finder I can see the entry of my NFS export mounted with "noowners" option but also with "nosuid"
that prevents my export to follow sticky bit behaviour.
    Alessandros-MacBook-Pro:~ root# mount
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
/dev/disk1s2 on /Volumes/unit (hfs, local, journaled)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
10.100.10.162:/test_nfs on /Volumes/test_nfs (nfs, nodev, nosuid, noowners, mounted by alessandro)
What could I do in order to do this action by finder preventing the nosuid option to be applied?
    Best regards
    Alex

  • DV files from mac to pc

    hello there...
I've captured a load of DV PAL media from a mini DV tape, on behalf of a friend who doesn't have a deck/camera...
I then need to give him this media at full DV PAL quality on a disc, so he can import it onto his hard-drive on a PC to use for a video-jockey projection at a club. It's only 15 minutes and i can break it into 2 files and give him 2 data DVD's.
I exported the media as QT conversion, using AVI, but it seems like the file size is way too small... it was suggested to me that i can export as regular QT movie and as long as i change the extension to .DV he should be able to import it ok into his PC...
can anyone advise me on the best way to retain the full DV quality, exporting from MAC to PC...
    Big thanks in advance.
    J.
p.s... i did search the forum extensively for this...
Message was edited by: James M.

I'm sure his software can handle more than DV. He wants to retain the full DV quality from the miniDV capture i did today at work, so at least he has them for the future. He has no deck or camera etc, but is getting into video-projections in clubs.
...I think he knows a little more than he's letting on...
hope i didn't offend any budding young carpenters out there.
I'm going to burn data DVD's of both the first QTmovie's exported from FCP (3x 9 minutes) , and also the .dv movies created from imovie, then we'll work at his end and get the correct codecs for windows media player/Quicktime etc.
Not sure whether it's solved yet, but going to wrap this one up with a greenie...
Thanks for your help, X & Michael.

  • Cant open InDesign files from mac on pc

I am trying to open some InDesign files made on a mac on my pc but it does not work.
I have the latest version of InDesign on my pc computer.
    We have tried:
Open the mac files as they are.
Resave the mac files as old indesign format and open them on PC
Export from mac to IDML files and open those files on the pc.
Open the file on my pc as a "copy"
    Nothing works.
    I get the message:
Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by another application.
Having a deadline for this project very very soon so really need to fix this. Any ideas out there?

I dont know what the orginal mac version is for this. And it will take some time to find out.
Can i see this somewhere? Could this make a difference?
    Use this: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/934429
Yes it makes a difference. First off, my script checks if it's indeed an InDesign file. If it is, it tells what version the file was created with (and recent versions of the script will also helpfully tell you what that means for you, i.e., whether or not you can open it with your version of inDesign).
Further check: nothing weird in the file name? Don't assume -- delete the original file name and type in something reasonable. There are lots of weird Mac symbols that may have hitched a ride along.
If that does not work: either post the file somewhere for us to look at (preferred), or open it with a hex editor and show us the first couple of bytes. This so we can verify what it is.

  • How can a mount a NFS share exported from OpenBSD?

    Hello Apple Discussions:
I've been experimenting with NFS in a mixed OS environment, and have been successful exporting nfs share with tigerserver, and mounting it on both a powerpc linux system, and on a powerpc openBSD system.
Likewise, I can export a NFS share from the linux powerpc box, and mount it on the openBSD box and on the tigerserver, although, the latter required using the options (ro,sync, insecure) in my exports file.
However, when I export a share on the OpenBSD box, I can mount it on the linux box, but not on tigerserver.
I would like for the OpenBSD box to export a NFS share securely, with read-write permissions, to the tigerserver.
After reading so many tutorials, that it would be a page of links, just to list them all, I am pulling my hair out. However, I have found one thread that suggests, that perhaps what I'm trying to do is impossible:
    http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/showthread.php?t=54308
Here it is suggested that the NFS won't work because tigerserver is not using UTF-8?
I will have to say, that I was somewhat alarmed, that the only times I succeeded in mounting an nfs share exported from linux onto tigerserver, it was when the "insecure" option is used in the /etc/exports file. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent for the linux style exports option "insecure", in the bsd style options of --maproot=user:group1:group2.
But I don't like using any options that say "insecure" anyways, so rather than trying to find out how to make openbsd "insecure", I would rather like to find out if there is a way to get tigerserver using UTF-8, at least when mounting NFS shares, if this is indeed the issue.
Here are the more technical details. I've created a user on all sytems named "fives" with the userid of 5555 and the groupid of 5555. I made the user local user in the local net info domain, but I've tried it with an LDAP user as well. The folders I wish to export and the folders into which to mount them are all owned by user fives and group fives, and have permissions set to 0775. The ip addresses are OpenBSD=192.168.222.111 TigerServer=192.168.222.233 LinuxPPC=192.168.222.253. I've included the relevant NFS setup files and running processes below:
    ON THE OPENBSD BOX:
    #/etc/exports
    /fives -alldirs -network=192.168.222.0 -mask=255.255.255.0
    /exports/fives -mapall=fives:fives 192.168.222.233 192.168.222.253
    #/etc/hosts.deny
    ALL: ALL
    #/etc/hosts.allow
    ALL: 192.168.222.233 192.168.222.253
    #/etc/rc.conf.local
    portmap=YES
    lockd=YES
    nfs_server=YES
    #here's proof that the daemons are running on the OpenBSD box;
    rpcinfo -p localhost
    program vers proto port
    100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
    100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
    100005 1 udp 863 mountd
    100005 3 udp 863 mountd
    100005 1 tcp 613 mountd
    100005 3 tcp 613 mountd
    100003 2 udp 2049 nfs
    100003 3 udp 2049 nfs
    100003 2 tcp 2049 nfs
    100003 3 tcp 2049 nfs
    100021 1 udp 895 nlockmgr
    100021 3 udp 895 nlockmgr
    100021 1 tcp 706 nlockmgr
    100021 3 tcp 706 nlockmgr
    # actually, I don't see statd, but haven't found the equivalent in openbsd. There's rpc.rstatd, and maybe it should be listed here, but there doesn't seem to be a way to launch it directly. This is a competitor with the UTF-8 theory about why it's not working.
    ON THE TIGER SERVER:
    # here's proof that tiger server sees the mounts:
    showmount -e 192.168.222.111
    Exports list on 192.168.222.111:
    /fives 192.168.222.0
    /exports/fives 192.168.222.233 192.168.222.253
    # here's the result of user fives' attempt at mounting a share:
    sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.222.111:/exports/fives /imports/fives
    mount_nfs: /imports/fives: Permission denied
    # yet user fives has no problem mounting same share on linuxppc box.
What is different about OSX server? I thought it was supposed to speak NFS?
---argh... I'm steppin out for a pint.. Hopefully when I'm back it'll just work.

One thing not mentioned is that if you decide on the multiple user approach, you can have your music folder in Shared Documents so you only store the tracks once.
Each user is free to choose which of those tracks they want in their library.
There is an Apple help article on multiple users.

    Thanks.
