NFS makes OSX hang

Normally if you are connected to an NFS server and the connection goes down, the Finder tries to reconnect and if it can't, it unmount the partition.
But if a partition is not connected but it still mounted while Mac OS X is shutting down, this is not done properly, actually OS X hangs.
Is this happening to me only?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You're right, this is a major bug. Finder takes a lot of time to unmount disconnected shares (please consider that this could happen accidentally with low WiFi signal, for instance) and the kernel stop responding if this is happening during the shutdown process. This should be fixed soon.
Maybe nobody answered because NFS is used in advanced UNIX - Mac (Linux in my case) networks, and this is not exactly a standard home configuration.
I don't know if this happens with SMB or ftp, anyway Mac OS X shows an overall weakness with networks mounts of any kind, if connection suddenly goes down.

  • How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?

How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?
I am using a QNAP NAS with SMB network shares, which I mount with OS X Mavericks. They are not searchable, as far as I know because of the indexing of network share is by default not activated.
To force the OS to index them I activated this via mdutils. But this is no solutions. This makes spotlight to index the share once. But I want spotlight to index it always and keep it up to date. I have a huge amount of documents & fotographs, which is very difficult to manage without being searchable.
Unfortunately the only solution I found in the www was the mdutils-way, which seems not to work, maybe only works not for me.
    I would appreciate any assistance,
    Thank you,
    Stefan

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to solving this problem here.
It appears that there still is NOT a good, reliable solution.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I did find this on http://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive:
    ===================================
To enable spotlight indexing on a network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i on
To disable the indexing of a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i off
To check the status of indexing on a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -s
    ===================================
And, I found this on the Synology NAS forums:
    cd /Volumes
    mdutil shareName -i on
    mdimport -Vp ./shareName
where shareName = name of your share
I have used the mdutil /Volumes/name -i on, and it seems to work.
But, if I understand it correctly, it is a one-time indexing -- the index is NOT keep up-to-date with changes.
So, how can we keep the index up-to-date?
My thought was to schedule a Terminal file to execute each night with the mdutil code.
Would this work?  If so, how would you setup a scheduled run?
Would it have to be done on each Mac that accesses the Share?

  • Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive?

Is it possible to make OSX see the internal and external HDD's as one large drive? For instance, hypothetically, could I have a Mac Mini Server with 2TB of internal storage and 2 external 4TB Thunderbolt HDD's, and make the OS see them all as one large 10TB drive?

Yes it is possible to do this, but this is not recommended since a disconnection of the external drives would lead to a destabilized system. Its best to do this only with internal drives, or secondarily with only external drives that are set up separately from the boot drive.
However, if you do wish to do this then you can combine any local set of volumes into one large "spanned" hard drive using Apple's CoreStorage volume management service. It does take a few steps to set up and requires use of the Terminal and Disk Utility. Here is a tutorial on how to do this: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57550128-263/how-to-make-a-custom-corestora ge-drive-in-os-x/

  • Undetectable / Irreparable File corruption problems lead to OSX hanging

    Hi,
    I have a Samsung 500Gb 5400rp disk in my MBP17 ( 2007 ).
Certain files appear to be corrupted.. ie. you try to open them and the whole Mac freezes for 30-40 seconds.
Disk Utility cannot detect a problem, nor can Diskwarrior. I've tried repairing permissions, repair disk, rebuild HFS directory, scan files for problems.. these erroneous files don't get detected at all.
Just try to open one and Finder/OSX hangs for ages. File copy programs just hang for ages including Migration Assistant, Finder Copy.
So migrating from my MBP17 to my new i7 MBP17 doesn't work at all due to these "ghost" file.
Appreciate any suggestions for how to get my files across to my new MBP.

Delete the corrupt files before migrating.

  • Switching graphics mode (9600m gt) - OSX hangs at subsequent login screen

Haven't been able to find anything on this. When I switch the graphics mode through the Energy Saver Preferences (whether from battery life to performance or vice versa), it takes me back to the login screen as it should, but the computer hangs there, sometimes for upwards of five minutes.
The cursor in the password field blinks but it takes no input. Plugging in an external keyboard makes no difference. The mouse pointer can be moved but clicking has no effect. After a few minutes, any inputs you've attempted to make rush back in at once and it works as usual.
I'm not sure when this started, but it's been happening since at least 10.6.5.

    Hi there,
I am new to Mac and got my MBP i7 2.0GHz, 8GB, SSD, OSX Lion 10.7.2 last month. Have you guys got any solution for the slow rendering of Youtube video? On my new MBP it can only run at resolution: 240p.
The same video on Youtube at HD resolution runs perfectly on my old HP Core Duo laptop. Slightly dissapointed with Mac here. Tried to look around for solution via Google but no luck.
It seems like no one from Apple support provides any solution for this problem. Are there any support at all from Apple???

  • OSX hanging intermittently

I recently bought a new 13" MacBook Pro 2.53GHz, I haven't even had it a month yet. I'm having a problem where the OS will hang intermittently. Let me explain.
I first noticed the problem when playing videos back with quicktime. All of a sudden playback would seem to stop even though I hadn't pressed pause. If I tried to click anywhere the computer would become unresponsive and I would get the spinning beachball (though I could still move the mouse). After up to a minute playback would resume but skipped forward, as if it had remained playing during the hang.
This doesn't just happen with quicktime is running. I've noticed I seem to be "allowed" one more click before the system hangs. I've tried to use this to my advantage by bringing up Activity Monitor, but I can't see any unresponsive or out of control processes. I've also noticed that if something is playing in iTunes, it continues playing throughout the hang.
Finally, when the hang is over, the system seems to play catch up, carrying out all the commands and mouse clicks I made during the hang.
This happens a few times a day. Hangs last up to about a minute. It's incredibly frustrating and I'm not sure how to go about fixing the problem. I've run a hardware test from the OSX disc and everything seems to be fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Might be a good idea to boot from your install disk and check the hard drive just in case.
Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open look at the bottom of the window. You will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% free disk space.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

  • OSX hangs during boot or install

    Hello all,
I'm writing this because I'm not really sure where else to post this at to get an indepth answer. Currently I have a dual G4 450mhz AGP PowerMac that I bought used. When I purchased it, it had 768mb of ram and the only thing it didn't have was a working hard drive. After putting in a new hard drive the system worked great when i intially installed OS9 and later OSX for fun.
However I had to remove the 768mb of RAM because a client PC needed it and that took priority over my dual G4 at the time. Just the other week I purchased 2 x 256mb of RAM from Omni Technologies (omnitechnologies.biz) which guarantees working ram for specified Apple systems.
Upon receiving that ram and installing it, I powered on the G4 only to find it would "hang" when booting OSX (10.3.9). The symptoms are as follows: When powering on I hear the normal chime and the white screen with gray apple logo appears. Seconds later the spinning progress indicator shows up spinning in circles as OSX is booting. However after about 5 minutes with no DVD/hdd activitity, the system then hangs. The gray apple logo changes to a gray 'prohibited' logo. It's the logo of the circle with the slash through it. Like the kind you see over no-smoking signs.
I figured the hard drive was messed up and I decided to reinstall OSX cleanly. However when I booted from the CD by pressing 'c', the EXACT SAME symptoms above happened. It was at this point I started getting really worried. So I decided to remove the hard drive temporarily and boot from the CD just to make sure it really was booting from the CD. Unfortunately the exact same symptoms happened.
Out of desperation to make sure that my hardware was OK, I decided to install OS 9.2.1 which installed and WORKED perfectly. I also installed UbuntuPPC and Slackintosh versions of linux which also installed and worked perfectly.
The issue appears to reside with OSX. I've borrowed friends cd's of 10.2-10.3 and all of them will NOT install. They start to boot from the CD, but never even make it to the first window.
    Help!!
    Brad

Actually trying one stick in each individual slot was one of the first things I did. Unfortunately that did not provide a resolution for me.
Thanks for the links regarding the broken folder/prohibitory sign. I read those and they made mention of resetting the nvram and pram. I just did that a bit earlier today but logging into the open firmware by pressing Option-Command-F-O and typing: reset-nvram; set-defaults; reset-all.
Upon the reboot and after I plugged the hdd with OSX on it back into the system, the resolution was a bit off as I figured. But this time there was no progress indicator. Instead only the gray apple logo showed and there was no response from the hdd or cdrom drive.
I also noticed that the USB mouses red light went out within the first 45 seconds of booting. I swapped out keyboards and mice and the new ones did the same thing as well. I also tested the memory in an imac I have and OSX that is installed ont heimac works gerat with that stick of memory. I'm leaning towards the fact that the memory I have is fine, being that it was ordered from a company that specifically guaranteed it to work on macs of all kinds.
    Any other thoughts or ideas?

  • OSX hangs when booting + monitor woes

Firstly, the internal monitor on my MacBook Pro refused to turn on when the computer booted - chime sounded on boot and the computer responded to keyboard input. I managed to fix the monitor by using my iMac as an external display, then shutting down and yanking out the video cable - now the internal monitor works! I'm glad its working, but does anyone have any insight into what went wrong? It seems really strange and I wan't to avoid it hapening again.
Secondly, I now have another serious problem. OSX refuses to boot.
I've started the computer in verbose mode and this was the result:
    http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpG9ptPf.jpg
    ** /dev/rdisk02 (NO WRITE)
    ** Root file system
       Executing fsck_hfs (version diskdev_cads-540.1-34)
I verified the start up disk and its permissions from a Lion install DVD and it passed them with flying colours. I restarted the computer in Safe Mode, but even when booting in safe mode it hangs. Progress bar gets to about 1/3 of the way and then stops. http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpA7jg8J.jpg
I know fsck is file system check, but its been 10minutes and it hasn't budged from that spot. I'll leave it running for an hour or so (I know checking a disk can take a while if its a serious issue), but does anyone have any solutions that don't require me erasing the disk in the event the OS really has gone caput?
Lastly - what would have caused this? The last time I used the computer was the day before yesterday and there were no signs of error. I turned it on today and then all this happened. Fluke? Bad blocks? I'm just concerned because this computer is less than a year old - and to have something like this happen is quite worrisome.
    Thank You!

You will hang on "setting default..." if you are are trying to mount NFS filesystems in your /etc/vfstab and you cannot reach the server where these filesystems reside. You can "boot -s" and comment out these filesystems in your vfstab so you can boot or you can resolve why you can't reach the server where the filesystems reside. Metainit pertains to DiskSuite. You may have used DiskSuite to create metadevices.

  • How to make OSX boot disk using a USB thumb drive? The final answer?

Well guys I am getting really conflicting information about possibility to use USB thumb drive for boot up drive for OSX! Some people say yes, some say no, some - not sure.
Here is the question formulated as straight as possible:
A Mac user wants to create OSX 10.6 boot-up disk on a USB thumb drive, so it can be used to start the Mac instead of using manufacturer’s CD. Also, (thumb drive’s size permitting) the Mac user must be able to install software on it, as it is done on the internal HD.
The computer is MacBookPro , Intel based , OSX 10.6
The USB thumb drive is 16 Gb brand new .
    So,
what the EXACT steps will be, to properly Mac format the thumb drive with OSX disk utility and then install on it the OSX 10.6 from the manufacturer's grey CD that comes with the Mac?
Could someone, who has practical experience and is absolutely sure about the exact steps provide the final answer, please?
Thanks in advance to old hands & pro Mac Users willing to clarify this topic !

    Hi
The instructions to make a bootable USB are [here|http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/usbflash.htm]
I have made a bootable USB following the above instruction and also had enough space to install a few utilities. It works fine for me.
I usually like to check disk health of my MBpro intel via disk utilities off the USB after booting from it. Not that this is a recommended way or anything, just that I like to do it that way.

  • Adobe Flashplayer makes videos hang intermitantly for around 30 secs and makes moxilla minimise..Help

    hi all
i have tried uninstalling flashplayer to an older version 10.6. I am using mozilla 19 currently. Have also tried acceleration tick button in options, also tried unistalling mozilla but all to no avail. Whenever i watch a video playback or sometimes add multiple tabs the adobe creates a hang which stalls mozilla and also makes it minimise to the toolbar. Around 30 secs later it then pops bak up ok again. It is then ok to use but doesnt it intermitantly regular as clockwork. How do i fix it?

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the [http://mozilla.com/plugincheck Mozilla Plugin Check site].
Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions.
If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow ''Update'' button or a red ''Update now'' button, please update these immediately.
To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

  • OSX Hang Issue

OSX appears to cause the application to "hang" if it is minimized for too long or sits in the background too long. It appears the system or AIR framework is placing the application into an idle state. Once you bring the application back to focus, it catches up and works fine. I am able to reproduce this on all version of Adobe AIR. Our application is a real-time application that requires constant connection. We've been able to find a work around where in some instances, simply playing a blank mp3 over and over causes the application to remain active.
    I've created a bug case.

  • Properties DAS object make ConsoleOne hang

    Hi,
I just installed the version of NMAS included in iChain 2.3.
I try to get iChain working with tokens, so I created a DAS object. While
asking the properties, ConsoleOne hangs, both on Netware servers as on
    Windows clients.
Tried to run ConsoleOne in debug mode, but it hangs right after having
started. Before we had no issues whatsoever with Consoleone.
Tried version 1.3.4, 1.3.5 and 1.3.6 with all exactly the same result.
In NWadmin, I can ask the properties of the DAS object, but in the list
of RADIUS system, "Novell Radius" is not available.
Anyone ever had the same issue?

This indeed did the trick. Thx a million , Scott.
What baffles me, is that this file is available on the NMAS CD in

But that it is apparently not installed.

  • Make OSX SD/USB bootable lock, i.e., make Mac unable to boot without SD card.

    Hello!
I'm trying to find a way to make my Macbook unable to boot without an external media to initialize the computer. Or at least a way to remove the harddrives from the listed boot options by hitting the option/alt key on bootup. I want to remove those options and force the computer to boot off the removable media. Is this possible, or has it been attempted?

The boot disk is specified in System Preferences>Startup Disk
What do you see when you boot to recovery and look at the startup disk and look at the disk(s) in disk utility?

  • Photoshop CC is creating problematic JPEGs that make OSX Preview.app lose its mind

I have a 2013 Retina MBP on Yosemite, with a licensed copy of Photoshop CC. My problem is, Preview cannot deal with JPEGs I am creating in Photoshop. Preview is really sluggish when it loads the images, and is unable to resize them. It appears to do so, but when the image is saved and closed, the resolution is not modified correctly and the file size stays oddly large.
Here is one such image: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1-phaWAfkzjQUxMR3EydDJLM1k/view?usp=sharing
(make sure you download the full 6.6 MB image, not the thumbnail)
Something about these JPEGs is making Preview lose its mind, but I'm not sure what it is. Can anyone help? I have also posted to Apple support communities, but I figure that users here may be more knowledgeable about what could be wrong with the file format, etc.

I see the issue already. You have a metric-ton of metadata you can see in File > Info under Raw data (or Advanced).
More precisely several pages of this category, something I have never seen in a jpeg.
    <photoshop:DocumentAncestors>
                <rdf:Bag>
                   <rdf:li>0</rdf:li>
                   <rdf:li>000B84DD32F5ABCC8D7B5E8681465EE9</rdf:li>
                   <rdf:li>0013FA92942B6EC5451A4D9D4972AD7E</rdf:li>
Quicklook is going crazy trying to parse all of this. I don't know where it came from or how important it is, but that's what is happening.
Compare that against a normal loading jpeg.
I had to try a Save for Web with the metadata removed (set to none) and it loads and previews normally in Preview.

  • Using Disk Utility Secure Erase Makes it hang?

Hi, I wanted to erase part of my drive (I was doing a generalized clean-up). I tried using the Disk Utility Secure Erase option. Even going with the single pass -- I'm just cleaning off free space, you know? ANyhow, it seems to hang a lot. The other functions on it seem to work ok. I looked at the force quit option and it says it isn't responding.
I did try just leaving it alone for a really long time, but unless I am doing the 35-pass erase it shouldn't take all night (which it did at one point and it still wasn't done).
(Computer is a MacBook late 2008 13" aluminum)
I had it do a repair and after I forced it to quit it said it did find bad areas of the disk and repaired them, or so it said.
But then I tried a verify and it seemed to crash again. So I get the sense there is something weird or fishy with Disk Util for 10.5.8. Any thoughts? My copy of TechTool works fine, it seems. Disk Util seems a bit unreliable right now, and I don't want to damage anything. But I also want an option to clean off the disk if I ever sell the computer or something like that. (I've been ID theft-ed once already, I'd rather not go through that again).
