NI 9422 - Flow Meter - Reed Switch

Hi all,
I am curious if the NI 9422 can accept signals from a flow meter operating on a reed switch. I understand that when operating on this type of sensor (as opposed to a hall effect), no power supply is required. So does the circuit simply send the sensed pulses back to the card for a counter reading (I have the card configured in counter mode).
The spec on the device is that it is a reed switch two wire SPST N/O contact.
I am asking this because our other flow meters are operating on the hall effect sensor which use a single circuit to both power the flow meter as well as take in the sensed pulses.
I want to know if the card can handle either of these switches.
Thank you.

Hi Cuearospace,
I just wanted to clarify that you want to read from the flow meter and not the switch. If you are trying to read from the switch, here is another discussion on the same topic but with a different card:
http://forums.ni.com/t5/Digital-I-O/USB-6501-magnetic-reed-switch-input/td-p/414543
But if you are reading from the flowmeter, this should be fine as you just read in the signal when it is generated.

  • FP ctr 500 with reed switch

    Hi,
I have installed a water flow meter that uses a reed switch. This reads the counts based on a magnet passing through the swtich to indicate its on or off status. When ever this state changes, that is considered one pulse. Each time the meter switches on and off, it is considered one count. My goal is to write a labview that reads these counts based on the number of pulses from the water meter. The counts are read with a Field point device (CRT 500) that consists of 8 channels and reads at a 16 bit rate.
I wrote a program that reads the counts and converts it into frequency. However, labview does not read my program and write numerical data to my indicator... I am not sure why.

    Hi,
Are you able to connect to the FP CRT-500 and get samples?
If you can successfully get the data into your VI, are you getting any error messages or updates when you run the VI?
If you can't, I would suggest posting this question in the "FieldPoint Family" hardware board, as there are more users that would be able to assist you with this type of issue.
    Thanks,

  • Reed switch versus Inverter board

    I need help....
My display has quit working and the screen is black. I've read so much about this my brain is shorting out and now i need clarification.
    Here's what i've done:
Took it to apple store - they denied my request to get it fixed even though im still under warrenty. They said they found liquid residue and declared it my fault - Tier 3 repair - +700$
They wouldn't identify the issue because it's my fault - meaning they wont put time into finding the cause becasue its not covered by warranty - meaning i have to pay to find the cause!
So, I've read the forums etc and determined its the inverter board because:
--I can use an external monitor perfectly
--There is no sleep function disorder - even when using an external monitor i can close the ibook and it sleeps ( ext. monitor turns off) and when re-opened,it turns back on without any issue.
So, i ordered a new inverter board - replaced it in 15 minutes (quite easy to do) by taking off the back panel of the display. Turned it back on and NOTHING!
Now, the inverter board i ordered was ONLY the board, no new cables. I have a feeling that the cables are pinched, worn and thats the issue.
I need answers for the following questions:
Could it be the Reed switch?
Do the inverter board cables only come with the reed switch?
Would an external monitor work perfectly if the reed switch was busted?
Do i need to take apart the entire body of the laptop to replace inverter board cables?
Any links to HOw-to's would be great.
    Thanks for listening!
Why is it that PC's mostly have software issues and Macs mostly have hardware issues? Cant they form like Voltron and give the consumers what they paid for??

When my older iBook required services performed by wegenermedia.com
the cost was about sixty dollars plus parts; and while the computer was
open in their shop, other updates could be done for just the cost of parts.
Since their site has contact information; they reply to phone, email or slow
mail, it is best to ask questions direct and see what kinds of expense may
be involved in an out-of-warranty (but authorized-level of quality) repair. As
the company also has most if not all parts for many portable Macintosh
computers in stock and knowledge to repair them, they are a good bet.
Your iBook, if a 14" and running 1.33GHz processor, is next to last version
of that model, as the last model was 1.42GHz; while the 12" was 1.33GHz.
Mine is a mid-2005 model, and of the last ones made; bought direct online.
It still has AppleCare, but is not really seeing a lot of use due to weather
and lack of proximity to much indoor environment, away from my desktop.
Submitting a computer through the US Mail can be a safe bet, as an alter-
native to FedEx or UPS, etc; if that is what works best. Did for me, since
my mailbox is inside a warm post office. The delivery services have been
known to leave parcels outdoors in foul weather; or in their trucks undeliver-
ed for a week after they should have been received. I've gotten broken Macs
through FedEx. An iBook is fairly easy to make a padded container for, to
send it in; and then slide the whole thing into a 'flat-rate priority box' that you
can get ahead of time from the Post Office. Don't expect to see the box
when your iBook gets returned; I made a nice box, but didn't get it back.
Good luck in however you have to deal with your poor iBook's situation!

  • IBook 12 Dual USB Inverter Cable with Reed Switch

I apologise if this should go on an older thread. The last time I was trying to access what was called the angle of death thread it took so long to load I gave up.
My question is: my G3 iBook 12" 500 is working perfectly as a backup for surfing and using Word, with a fairly new replacement hard drive in it. But it has started the backlight blanking out when the screen is moved through 90 degrees. From a recent post I noticed yesterday that must have been moved, I now understood that the problem was usually, or often, to do with the need to replace the Inverter Cable with Reed Switch. I live in the UK and cannot get this done locally, but an online UK firm agrees this is usually the problem and he can fit the part and do the repair which with labour costs and postage will be not far off £100.
Is it fairly safe now to assume that this part is the root of this problem?
    thanks

Thanks for the reply clarifying the matter. In fact it's now been explained to me that with postage plus vat it goes from £31 plus tax for the part, then £75 plus tax for the labour, then £15 plus tax for the postage, which comes to £142 total.
I think I'll try to keep working at 89 degrees for a bit yet then if I have to I'll buy the part and see if I can get a cheaper way to get it installed. Don't trust myself with such a job.

  • Changing flow meter's mode during the measurement

    Hi,
I have the CMOSens EM1 gas flow meter which can be setted to either temperature mode or flow rate mode. However, I will need both temperature data and flow rate (in ml/min) data in order to calculate the mass flow rate in kg/min. I am very new to LabVIEW so I have no idea what I can do. What I have in mind is ... doing the measurement with the sensor in temperature mode for ~ 1 second, then change to flow mode for ~ 1 second and change back to temperature mode and so on, until we stop the measurement. So output in data file might be something like this ...
    Time   Data
    0       temp
    1       flow
    2       temp
    3       flow
where temperature and flow data can be in different column. Note that the fastest sensor response time is 5 ms.
Any suggestion what I can do in LabVIEW??
Thank you so much in advance.
    Bew

    Hi SnowMule
Thank you for your suggestion. The data from flow meter is already in volume per minute so I only need to know density of gas at temperature T to find mass flow rate (...do I miss anything?). It's nitrogen gas and there's some online database availble to get the gas density from known temperature. That's why I want to read the temperature from the flow meter as well.
Additional thermocouple would be a solution if I cannot have LabVIEW to do the job for me.
    Thanks again!

  • Where does the magnet go for the reed switch? (i found the magnet after . .

My hinges had broken on the display so I replaced the display.
After putting back the unit together I found a magnet ?
The unit was going to sleep with the screen open.
I assume this is for the reed switch, where does the magnet go?
    in the computer?
I found reference to the 12" ibook G4 1.2ghz with the reed switch under "end" key and the magnet in the screen. However I found the sensor "reed switch" in my screen in the right upper side.

    I found it.

  • Turbine flow meter conversion

    Hi,
Apologies for the query but this software is all new to me . I have a 9188 cDaq 8 way chassis containing several modules including 2 off 9401 counter modules, I am running signal express version 6.0.0.
My issue is I have 3 miniature turbine flow meters (Gems units FT-110 series) which are giving out 5V square waves at varying pulse widths dependant upon what the flow is.  I've scoped the input to my 9401 and the signals look good so am assuming it's my signal express configuring that is causing the problem,
I've wired the +ve and gnd outputs of the flowmeters to DIO0 +Com, DIO1 + Com and DIO3 + Com on one of my 9401 cards.
I can see the pulse count increment on measurement & automation explorer when I run the test panel for that module and look at the edge counts so my system can see the pulse trains coming in.
When configuring signal express I need this to read in l/min, 58-575Hz should equate to 0.5-5 l/min, however I cannot seem to convert the pulses to l/min.
If I select DAQmx acquire>counter input>frequency it gives me the option of custom scaling but every time I run it I get the DAQ assistant error flagging up.  I tried numerous timing settings with no luck.  The only time I've got this to count succesfully is using counter input>edge count but I'm stuck on how to convert this into l/min as there is no scaling function (that I'm aware of!)
    Any help appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think he's referring to l/min as Liters per minute, and i'm assuming the Freq to Flow are the values that corrolate to the scaling.
If that's the case; Carl, it sounds to me you need to setup a custom scale. You can do this in the Channel Settings tab in the DAQmxAcquire step. Under custom scaling select Create New and select Map Range Scale. You min/max Freq should equal your min/max flow rate.
I've attached some screenshots for reference.
Let us know if we're on the right track, otherwise we may need more info; I.E. .seproj file and a bit more info on the flow meter (connection type, output signal, etc).
Also, a brief glance at the documentation on that flow meter recommends the use of a pull-up resistor. May want to look at that as well.

  • Cole-Parmer DAQ with ABB Aquamaster-S Flow Meter

I have a Cole-Parmer 18200-00 DAQ that I'm using to measure the flow rate using an ABB Aquamaster S. The flow meter sends out a pulse that is equivalent to the flow rate in the system. I'm having some trouble writing a program that would give me an accurate flow measurement. I tried converting the pulse into a voltage by using a resistor connected into the analog port but instead of getting a fixed or approximate number for the flow rate I get a range of flows. I'm guessing I should connect the flow meter to a counter port but I don't know how ?
I might even be on the wrong track to beging with. Please Help  ??

Unless I am confused by your text document, you can simply count pulses.
One pulse means that the pinwheel rotated one time.
They have calibrated one revolution to mean that 1/20th of a Liter has passed.
    Therefore, your volume will be:
    V = (# pulses) * 1/20
And your flow rate would be:
    Q = V / (t2 - t1)
where t is time in whatever units you want.

  • Positive displacement flow meter

I have a spur gear positive displacement flow meter and a sensor which counts the number of impulses (square-waves). 1800 impulses indicate  1 gallon. How can I measure the volumetric flow rate in Gallon per second? What I plan to do is to count the number of impulses in 0.01s and times as N, and then times 1 gallon/1800 to get the volume, and then divide the product by 0.01. What if the square wave is not complete when the 0.01s period is not complete.

I know how to use the Basic level Trigger detection now, and I am trying to counter the number of rising edges. I am intend to use a cases struture to do it. When the trigger detection is true, then do the loop. The problem is how to memorize the value of last time. I also looked at an example file from the forum. But that one makes me confused.

    Hey,
Can someone help me... I need to hook up a Coriolis Flow Meter with the Transmitter IFT9701 to the NI-DAQ - FP1000 but I can't find the wiring diagram.
There are just three wires coming out of the transmitter (red, black and plain) and gives an output of 19.8 volts on a multimeter.

There are just three wires coming out of the transmitter (red, black and plain)
-- What does "plain" mean - do you mean uninsulated?
If so, I would guess a 4-20 mA output.
and gives an output of 19.8 volts on a multimeter.
That's meaningless unless you tell us if and how it's powered, and what resistor you used to measure.
Did you look up the specs?
It is indeed a 4-20 mA output.

    Hello,
I could not find any code on either NI's Development Zone or on www.ni.com/idnet (where we store drivers for 3rd party hardware).  I did find two drivers for humidity sensors from Sensirion.  I've attached the link below.  While we do not currently have any code written, there are resources available to help you create your own driver.  First you will need the manual on the ASL 1600-20.  I searched Sensirion's site, but only found the second link below.  You may want to contact Sensirion and see if they have any documentation on how to communicate with their flow meter using the serial protocol.  We also have some tools available for you at the last link.  At the bottom of the page of the third document below, there is a tab for "Learn to Build Instrument Drivers".  Here we have many links to videos and article to assist you.  Good luck!

  • Flow Measurement With Turbine Flow Meter Using cFP

Hi I am trying to measure a flow rate using a Gems FT-110 Turbine Flow Rate Sensor. The cable connection has a Red one that says 5-24VDC, a Black one that says 0 VDC and a Brown one showing a square wave. If I am using a compact Fieldpoint, should I use a Counter like the NI cFP-CTR-500? How do I connect the flow meter to the module? Thank you.

  • IBook graphics and reed switch

I have bought faulty, repaired and sold a few iBooks... all have been the earlier 1.2ghz models with a reed switch in the screen casing.
Now I have a 1.33ghz model with the magnet in the screen casing. The reed switch seems to be missing.
Im wondering how a replacement switch plugs into the logic board? Is it the 2 pin plug below where the mousepad goes? tbh, I dont want to short the pins "just to see what happens"
Also my graphics dont display properly. In fact despite a new screen (old one smashed) and inverter I can only get a display from an external monitor. Though I have literally plugged the new screen in 5mins ago and not properly tested it. Everything seems fine until I get to the part of OSX install which allows me to format my drive. It displays but its all fuzzy and greyscale.
Ive noticed it doesnt see my harddrive (hopefully fixable by using a jumper) but also it doesnt detect the soundcard. I dont get a chime upon startup. This worries me!

In the 1.33 12" G4 it's foreword between the trackpad connector and the .22 F super cap.
seems fine until I get to the part of OSX install which allows me to format my drive. It displays but its all fuzzy and greyscale.
The 1.33 has a ATI Mobility Radeon 9550. Mine is completely dead. It could also be a BGA issue. Does pressure on the heat sink over the GPU make any difference?

There is no jumper on the hard drive? Maybe it's just bad.
but also it doesnt detect the soundcard. I dont get a chime upon startup. This worries me!
Are the speakers plugged in properly?

Well see if any of these suggestions help. If not and the 9550 is OK I need one for my 1.33.

  • Flow Meter VI - Pulse Count - Help Needed

    Hi,
I am working on developing a Flow Meter VI, I am using a flow meter with a pelton wheen that outputs a stream of pulses in proportion to flow.
The flow meter output is attached to the counter line of my 6501, and the pulse count is multiplied by 1.41 (per datasheet) to give ml.
I have the attached VI but not sure exactly what it is doing, would someone mind explaining how it works and how it could be optimised, thanks.

    Attachments:
    Flow Meter.vi ‏52 KB

    Hi Ger,
Looking at the VI it seems to be just acquiring some data off of your 6501 card, and just edge counting the number of pulses received and then processing the data to give the result of flow. It seems fairly simple in terms of what it is doing, but there are a few optimisations I can reccomend to you. In your VI there is an unused shift register in the first for loop which I would reccomend removing as it doesn't seem to be strictly necessary. In the second for loop, there is an uninitialised shift register, and I would reccomend that you initialise that with a suitable value unless you specifically need it, as otherwise it will just use the default value of the data type, which in this case is 0.
Another optimisation you could use is replacing the DAQ assistant with DAQmx functionality however considering how simple this code is currently, the DAQ Assistant should not cause a problem, however if you wish to expand it in the future I would reccomend looking into using the lower level DAQmx VI's.
