NI products only sound midi channel 1 of instrument instance

Set it up right. Multichannel Instrument cabled to Audio Instrument in Environment. But only channel one responds in every sub-channel selected in the arrange window. Whew! This is driving me crazy. What am I doing wrong? Port=All. Name of midi channel changes as it should in the parameter window, but I can only hear midi channel one in any subchannel when triggered from keyboard. The only way I can hear the other instruments is to use the NI onscreen keyboard. Still all midi info plays back on midi channel one which is not the sound I want for everything.
What a work out: an exercise in futility. Any ideas?

After letting the problem rest a couple days, I returned to it and got the setup to
work.  I don't know for sure what I was doing wrong in the first place but here is
what I did differently that worked:
Before opening Audition, I opened keyrig.exe and set up the MIDI channels for the
instruments I wanted.  I then SAVED the instrument profile for the GM4 module in the
GM4 Patch folder under the Keyrig Data folder (I think the folder names are correct
but am doing this from memory).
Then I opened Audition, did what I needed to do to get the keyrig loaded to play on a
MIDI track.  I left the MIDI input on <All> and the output on <None> in the Sequencer.
I then clicked on Settings which brought up the keyrig.exe control panel.  Then on
the GM4 module I LOADED the profile I had made above.  Then, as I selected each
channel via the keyboard, I got the correct instrument and was able to record them. So
by "preloading" the instruments instead of trying to select them while in Audition,
the setup worked.
Observations: Audition and the keyrig.exe software do not like each other.  If I had
the keyrig.exe software open (Settings) and accidentally clicked in a non-button area
of the interface, Audition crashed.  Once I loaded my profile as above, I could then
assign new instruments to different MIDI channels from within Audition but since it
was easy to crash Audition while keyrig.exe was open, I would try to avoid it.  Once
set up--it was a blast to goof around with the different sounds.

  • How Can I separate my MIDI Channels with layered instruments in MainStage 2 With my Axiom 61?

I have been at it for 3 days straight. I want to play an internal instrument (EVB3 for example) and trigger samples with the EXS24 without triggering notes from the other instrument. I have my keyboard set to MIy help meDI channel 1 and my drum pads set to MIDI channel 10. The still play together. I've tried changing MIDI input on both channel strips to multitimbral, Channel 1 for the keyboard and channel 10 for the drum pads. Still playing together. I've tried changing attributes in the Mapping screen. Still...
I don't think its the Axiom. I've tried changing MIDI CC numbers but then it won't talk to either instrument. I'm currently using MIDI cables into a 3rd generation M-Box. I've tried using USB as well. Please, somebody help me!!

Sorry for the late responce, I've been in program mode and haven't had a chance to come back to this.
I figured it out. It was an option that I had over looked in the Assignments & Mapping tab in Edit Mode. At the bottom of the window that says All Devices. In that menu there is another tab that says Channel 1-16. If you click where it says Unassigned, down in the Screen Control Inspector there is a checked box that says "Send unassigned MIDI to all Channel Strips". If you uncheck that box then everything works perfectly. It is a little extra work having to assign the keyboard everytime you ad a channel strip but when you have to do some serious programming it's worth it.
Anyone who needs to program with multiple devices should uncheck this right out of the gate. It will save you from pulling your hair out.
Thank you Bruno for your help. It is much appreciated.

  • High than 16 MIDI channels.

    Hello,
I have created several orchestra files in Finale which allow up to 128 MIDI channels. I'm only using and hoping to use 32. I realize the original MIDI specs allow for only 16, BUT
but Finale, and Home Concert Extreme allow for more using A and B or other multiple sets of 16 structure.
QUESTION: In there any way to Assign a higher-than-16 midi channel to a Region or Track in Logic Pro? Kind of like a Maximum number of x. parameter, only for MIDI channels.
I have two applications ready and willing to open, understand and correctly channel these higher-than 16 channels embed files.
    Please help if possible.

Gentleman, thank you for all the help.
    Here is my studio configuration.
I am Using Home Concert Extreme ( a change of tempo following software) to Play (meaning read without editing ) an underling MIDI file. These underlying MIDI files are created by FINALE can have 32 channels ( i think), or they may just have 2 separate tracks per channel. And some are created by Logic. It doesn't really matter.
WHen I "open" these files in Home Concert Extreme, I have to re-channelize half the tracks form MIDI A to MIDI B. Kind of like separating conjoined twins.. 2 come in together.. but then are re-directed to live separate lives.)
ANYWAY... Here is the BUG. I am trying to play these in software HomeConcertExtreme BUT use the SOUNDS (virtual instrument settings) in Logic Pro which are infinitely superior to the default of QuickTime GM Synth sounds.
So... got some advice to use the IAC Driver.. did.
I got some advice to check "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording." Under Settings> Recording.. Did that too. Works perfectly for fewer than 17 channels.
So am not using an external sound card, nor am I using an external MIDI interface to play back.
Its going from HCX to IAC Drive to Logic all in the computer.
Here is how logic is responding:
I have 2 different channel 12's set up in HCX
    A-12 is for Piano LH
    B-12 is for Violin
    in Logic I have
Instrument 12 channel 12 all laid out nice in anticipation for the piano notes, and
Instr. 28 channel 12 all laid out for the violin notes.
Unfortunately Here is what I get.
If both tracks are record enabled in usually de-mixes properly.
But if the piano is not enabled both the piano notes and violin notes sound like Violin.
if the violin is not record enables both the piano notes and violin notes sound like a piano.
Is this going to happen CONSISTENTLY as a rule?
Just for kicks, in the environment, I change the track that I laid out for the piano in Logic (instr 12 channel 12
to instrument 12 channel 13 and it still played the piano notes but on a different sound -
    organ.
Just for kicks I then changed the piano track to instrument 16 channel 16 and the piano notes still followed me.
    Where are the rules?
    How does it channelize?
Does each in coming channel just look for the first available (record enabled) channel and jump on it; like the characters of Space Balls jumping in emergency escape pods.
How can I count on a 24 channel orchestra to all find their instruments???????
    please help.

  • Exporting MIDI Channel Assignments

    Hi
I'm using LE 8 with a DX7 as my MIDI input controller. The DX transmits only on MIDI channel 1. So when I export my project to Finale for notating, all tracks are assigned to MIDI ch 1, and all the Finale staves are set to Ch 1 and an acoustic piano sound. It's tedious to have to create instruments and reset all my staves to appropriate instruments for Finale playback. Is there a way to set up my Autoload file in Logic so that MIDI channels and/or Program changes can be retained when I export my Logic file to a MIDI file and then to Finale? Everything works fine when I create dummy Regions and set the Ch numbers and Program numbers in the Event List to the correct values, but that info gets overwritten as soon as I record on the dummy Regions where this info is stored.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer or suggestion to your question but I needed to say WOW ... a DX7? That brings me back! A true classic revolutionary instrument if there ever was one.
Good luck with your question friend.

  • Multiple midi channels in one region

    Hello,
I've been using Logic since version 4.7, but haven't tried the following in a version newer than 5.5.1. Not sure what functionality might have changed, so here goes...
I'm having issues with having notes with different midi channel assignments in a single region. I have 3 audio instrumets on midi channel one, two, and three, respectively. I have a midi instrument whose midi channel is set to all, that is patched to all three audio instruments in the environment. The track containing my region is playing back on the midi instrument, not the individual audio instruments. I have assigned channels 1, 2, and 3 to individual notes in the region, yet when it plays, all 3 audio instruments are triggered for every note rather than only the instrument whose midi channel matches the note's channel.
    Thanks in advance,
    JG

Thanks for the responses! The issue is that the three audio instrument objects in the environment are not respecting it's assigned midi channel. Yes, the channel splitter will split the incoming midi channel, but I shouldn't have to use the splitter if I set the midi channel on instrument 1's parameters pane to channel 1, and if the the midi channel is set to channel 2 on audio instrument 2 ect. So in the above example, no matter how how many different events I send on different midi channels to audio instrument 1, audio instrument 1 should only respond to midi channel 1. However it responds to all midi channels. Again, the channel IS NOT SET TO ALL.
    So here's a simple test:
    -Instantiate Logic's EFM1 on audio instrument 1
-Set audio instrument 1's midi channel in the parameters pane to midi channel 4
-Create a blank midi region with the pencil tool on audio instruments 1's track in the arrange window
-Open up the blank region in the matrix editor
-With the pencil tool, create a few notes.
-Then open up the same region in the event list editor and make sure that all the notes are on a midi channel other that channel 4.
-Play back the region and EFM1 will play back not respecting it's channel assignment!
Hope this clears some stuff up.

  • How to access audio instruments as midi channels from midi keyboard?

    Hi!
This is my first post here.
I use mostly Logic Pro 7 as a sound module with my keyboard. I have a song file in Logic that I made some time ago, where I've linked every audio instrument to a corresponding audio channel (same midi channel). All channels are in record mode, and thus every audio instrument is assigned a midi channel - and I can play different audio instruments by changing the midi channel on my midi keyboard.
Now, I want to create more tracks, so I can have more instruments to choose between. That doesn't work.. I try to make a new logic file and do the same thing with more channels, but I can't remeber how I made this work in the first place. I've been trying for hours and hours, and I'm going nuts here.
I would extremely grateful if anyone could tell me how this is done.
    (No rewire/extra software is necessary.)
    Thanks for reading.

    Welcome!
It's fairly straightforward. On each audio instrument, assign a MIDI channel in the parameter box - so eg Audio Instrument 1 is set to MIDI channel 1, Audio Instrument 2 is set to channel 2 etc.
The key part is in your song settings "File -> Song Settings -> Recording" to make sure "Auto demix by even channel" is ticked.
Now, shift-click on the record buttons for all your audio instruments, and when you send on MIDI channel 1, you'll play the first one, switching to channel 2 you'll play the second one, and so on.
The max you can do is 16 channels at once, afaik, as the sequencer input doesn't retain port info (which is a bit of a shortcoming in my book, but there you go...)

  • Record Enable on Multiple Midi Channels

    Longtime Logic user here.
First of all, I have never really understood certain parts of record enabling midi channels.  Sometimes, I will be switching between midi channels to record a new instrument, and the old midi channel will stay Record Enabled, and sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes, when two midi channels are record enabled, one of them will have a grey "R" with a little red R instead of the normally full red "R".  (I know, it's confusing)
And sometimes when you choose an Aux track that is linked to a Midi channel with multiple outputs, it acts like it is Record Enabled.  This means, you have an Aux track selected, but you can play a midi instrument, like a different instrument is selected.
These were always part of Logic, for as long as I used them, and I just learned to deal with them without thinking too much about why one thing happens.
With Logic Pro X, I just found a bug that makes these other things matter.
I was working on an Aux track for a multi-output midi instrument.
Then I clicked onto a different midi instrument, to begin recording onto it.  What happened was the Aux track was still "Record Enabled" even though there is no "R" button on an Aux track.  So, when I hit the keyboard, two different midi channels were playing, even though one of them was an Aux track without a record enabled button.
I was able to clear it, by selecting a different midi channel, and clicking around until there was only one midi channel playing.  But at this point, Logic's weird programming is starting to be an issue that I wish they would address.

Mate, i'm so sorry - Between LP9 and LPX i was using Ableton and i think i've confused myself, just spent 10 minutes looking for the option in Logic as i could see the option in my head when replying.
    However, it was in Ableton.
It's Logic's characteristic i guess?  I've had a few oddities record-enabling tracks but have put it down to being a new release, things like enabling and not actually hearing any notes, clicking the R on/off and suddenly it's ok.
My problem has always been with Logic, i have this OCD-like nature where i click away from a track after making a change, and it STILL catches me out as i go to record an track above gets overwritten if i'm looking away - So totally understand your frustrations.
Not sure why it has to be fixed like that really, must be some deep rooted reason like it would blow up if there were no track record-enabled and you pressed the record button maybe?

  • Can't get sound from my midi channels

Hello. I've been using Logic 8 for a while. 2 days ago I updated to the newest version 8.0.1 and after I did it, I can't get sound from my midi channels. Before the update I could use my Ivory pianos perfectly, but after the update I can't. I've tried every setup I can imagine. I've been here sitting for hours trying to fix it but I can't .
Logic recognizes my keyboard, since I play...all the notes appear on the transport bar, but i can't get sound from any sampler (Ivory, EXS, EVP88, etc).
I've checked my outputs, etc...but nothing.
    Please help me!!! I'm desperate!
    Thanks

Do you hear the Audio tracks and only Software Instruments are not working od don't you get any output at all? I was just assuming that through the update your Apogee has been removed as your Audio device in Preferences->Audio->devices.

  • Audigy 4 Pro - can only get 2 channel sound via SPDIF/optical connecti

I have two PC's, one with an Audigy 4 Pro and one with an Audigy 2 Platinum (A2P), I have my 5. speakers hooked up to the A2P and the A4P connected via the SPDIF to the A2P, I would expect to get 5. - both are setup to use 5. speakers, (I know that as a standard Digital coax/optical connections should handle multi speaker configs my entire A/V sound system (7. Dolby) uses optical and coax and it works fine).
If I run the channel test on the Audigy 4 I can get nothing but sound through the left and right speakers, if I run the test on the Audigy 2 (speakers direct connected) the sound is fine, if I reconnect the speakers to my Audigy 4 I get sound on all speakers so it looks like its an issue with the SPDIF and optical inputs (I tried both).
I have emailed tech support, I'm waiting for them to come back and tell me that the Audigy 4 cannot transmit more than two channels down the SPDIF/optical outs, thats my suspicion anyway, if that is the case then I'm not going to be a happy man and the Audigy will be going back to the store. Could be a driver problem of course as I cant believe they would implement Dolby and THX and only transmit two channels on the optical outs, that would be a bit dumb considering the primary use for digital connections is sound system interconnects.
Anyone with any ideas about this let me know, perhaps theres a hidden setting somewhere or a registry setting that switches the digital outs to carry all signals.

Just before everyone kicks off, heres a response I got from a tech guy at Creative themselves.
If you connect speakers to your sound card using a digital cable
(RCA/SPDIF or optical) then the software speaker test will only output
from two speakers. The reason for this is that the speaker test signal is
not in AC3 nor DTS format.
The signal on a digital connection is either
Optical SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
RCA SPDIF - which is either Stereo PCM signal or AC-3/DTS Bitstream
If you play AC3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS encoded signals, the amplifier
decodes this and outputs it to all 6 speakers (5 satellites & subwoofer)
    discretely.
When playing back stereo signals (such as Wav/CD Audio or MP3/WMA files)
the amplifier may generate 5. output based on the incoming stereo PCM
signal, provided Dolby Pro Logic decoding is available and activated.
Therefore the speaker test should not be relied on when using RCA or
    Optical digital connections.
This applies to all speaker systems equipped with RCA or Optical digital
    connections.
This makes sense to me and I'm pretty happy with it, basically as the reply says above the speaker test does not encode to AC3 hence if you hook two Audigys together and run the test you only get 2 channel output, if you play a DVD which is AC3/DTS encoded on one Audigy and listen to speakers hooked up to the other when both Audigys are connected via SPDIF or optical you should in theory get full playback on all speakers. Hopefully
    Cheers
    Simon

  • Sequence only has one channel of sound

I have a few sequences that I have added to a master sequence and only have one channel of sound in the master sequence.
In the actual sequence of each sequence that was added I have 2 channels of sound.
    What would correct this issue?
Or does cut and paste everything in each sequence into my master sequence work better?

re: the decklink comment - that was directed to the thread jacker ... lol.
re: cloned system drives. Updating does not create a clone automatically. It is something you have to do. In the interest of locking the barn door after the paddle has been lost upstream - get a firewire drive as large as your system drive. Download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner (shareware) and when your system gets working again, Clone the working drive to the firewire drive. This is your insurance when you update the OS, QT and/or any of the FCS pro apps.
Once you have a clone, if your update goes wrong, you can copy the clone back over the bunged installation and be back up and running within an hour or so.
Regarding FCP 6.0.4, perhaps someone archived a version (or you can find it on the FCP updates page). If you use Software update, it will want to install the most recent version.

  • Millions of midi channels, only 4 audio channels

so when i'm in logic i can hold down on a channel, go to audio/ audio instrument and then select hundreds of different insert channels. great for midi
however there are only 4 audio channels to choose from! how can this be?
    thanks

    dear pp,
sorry...i couldn't resist. what's your interface and how many inputs does it have? if it's 4, then no more than 4 can be accessed at any given moment. if it has more than 4 then you haven't either set up enough audio tracks or assigned enough inputs (inputs 5+ per individual trks.) to the rest.

  • Only sound in left channel

    MSI KT333 ULTRA2 BA   (onboard AC97)
I have a problem. Yesterday i noticed that i had only sound in the left channel.??  I checked my cables and speakers , used a discman and they where ok.
Installed new, old, different drivers but no changes, still only left channel. Ok format C and TOTAL reinstall....
but still only left channel works.
Im using my sblive now but i would rather be using the onboard  since its better for me.
    Any idea ??

i guess that youve tried other speakers and headphones and stuff.. it might be as simple as your onboard sound output might be damaged... if theres a glitch it usually results in only one speaker sound.. try gently to "swirl" the plug in the hole and see if you get 2 channel sound...
    well its worth a try

  • Sound only from left channel

I bout an IPhone 3G for my wife last friday. She complained about the music quality saying that her little cheap MP3 player sounded better. I plugged in the headset and found that there was sound only fro one channel (Left). I plugged my headset from my 3GS and it also only had sound from one channel. Any suggestions?

    Try restart, reset, then restore.

  • [ReWire] How to use Logic's MIDI channels only

Sorry for the rather vague subject title, but I can't come up with a better one.
    Let me explain the situation:
I'm working on a project with several audio and MIDI tracks and also two ReWired Reason4 instruments, all routed to their corresponding Reason device. (the MIDI information is coming out of Logic and being routed to Reason and the audio is then routed back into Logic)
My problem is with Logic's own MIDI channels. When I record enable one of these (Logic) channels and I play my MIDI keyboard, Reason also responds to that and plays one of the instruments.
So I hear the Logic instrument as well as the Reason instrument. To put it in the easiest way possible, I don't want that.
Is there a way to make Logic stop sending out MIDI information to it's ReWire slave, when a non-rewire channel is record enabled?
Thanks in advance for your help

Hmm that makes perfectly sense... that I haven't thought of that myself
    I will try tonight. Thanks!

  • Connecting kurzweil sp88 to GB I want to connect my Kurzweil sp88 to GB. The Kurzweil has a baffling array of buttons and possible MIDI channels. It also has the old style MIDI plug ins. I've got the MIDI out connected to my MacBook Pro via USB adapter.

I have my Kurzweil connected to my MacBook Pro via an adapter (old style MIDI from Kurzweil to USB adapter connecting to Mac). The Kurzweil has a baffling array of buttons and possible MIDI channels. Can anyone please tell me which of the channels I should use? Also, should I leave the MIDI In cable out of the Kurzweil? Thanks for as detailed an answer as possible. If you like you can respond directly to me at [email protected]

First of all I do not own this keyboard. But a quick look at the manual (found on the internet) says that when first powered up the SP88 is in Internal Sounds mode. Meaning you hear the sounds selected when playing the keyboard. It also stated that the default Midi Transmit Channel is Midi Channel #1.
Looks like you would need to go to the SP88 Keyboard's MIDI SETUP and simply select LOCAL OFF. Now the keyboard should be ready to transmit Midi Out only and no internal sounds should be heard.
Next you may or may not need to do this but you might need to go into the Utilities Folder found in your Applications Folder on your Mac and double click AUDIO MIDI SETUP the keyboard Icon. Figure #1 below.
Next you need to make a physical connection from the Midi Out of the SP88 to the Midi In on your Midi Interface. Figure #3 below. You may need to Click on Add Device first. Figure #2 below.
In the examples shown below I have a Yamaha Electronic Drum Kit that is Midi Out only... not USB out. I had to plug a Midi cable from the Midi Out Port on the back of my Drum Module to the Midi In Port on the back of my Motu 828 Audio Inferface which is connected to my Mac. Next I created the Audio Interface and Drum Module "Devices" as mentioned above.
I then double clicked on the Drum Module and made my Midi Out Selections. Figure #4 Below. And once it was setup and the icons closed I used my mouse to draw a virtual cable connection from the Drum Module Out to the Audio Interface In. Figure #3 below. This is how I got my Midi Devices to talk to one another.
Once you have made your setup as I have outlined create a MIDI Instrument Track in Garageband, select an instrument for example a Piano then Record Enable that track in Garageband and see if you now hear what you are playing. In this example the SP88 is a Midi Controller only and you will only hear sounds selected in Garageband which is what you want.
Keep in midi your setup may be different than mine. You can keep your SP88 Keyboard on the default Midi Channel #1. That would be a good place to start. Garageband receives Midi on all channels.
