NI VISA TekTronix RSA3408A "Free Run" and "Stop" Commands?

Hello
Is anybody clued up on the "FREE RUN" and "STOP" commands for TekTronix devices? Particularly the RSA3408A, if not, I'll try anything.

Tektronics (for some reason) requires you to register to download the manual I'll leave that to you I get enough spam from Tek

Maybe it's set as a login item:
- System Preferences: Users and Groups:
- Highlight your user account in the left pane/list
- Click "Login" tab at the top.
See if you have an Automater action on the list
- Note, you can select it, then right-click, and can then select "Reveal in Finder". That way you might have an idea what installed it.

Is it possible to create run and stop button on the control pannel instead fo using the ones on the tool bar?

I have created a program which runs to all my specifications. The final thing I'd like to do is to be able to run it from the contrl panel.
Can i create a run and stop button on the control panel or am i limited to using the little white arrow button on the toolbar?

When you say Control Panel are you referring to the Front Panel of your VI? If so then yes you can have the program start automatically upon being opened and close with a button push on the Front Panel. Let me know if this is what you were looking for.

Emctl istop and stop commands

Hi all
I was recently having an issue with OEM in that even though I was logged in as SYS user I was unable to do certain things in EM without getting various errors. One of our devs then said to do an a emctl istop dbconsole and the start the service (i am using windows) using emctl start dbconsole.
This seemed to fix the problem. I have not read anywhere about the i commands can someone explain to me why this worked?

asam! - Thanks for the reply, but restarting using just the standard emctl start and stop commands didn't fix the issue, it was only when using the istop and then a net service start that the service came back up.

NI VISA TekTronix RSA3408A Writing OK, But Reading Fail 0xBFFF0015 (VI_ERROR_TMO)

I am developing my own custom software for automated testing of our product. I need the software to start a session with a particular instrument (Tektronix RSA3408A) and read it's CH Power, and close the session.
I am writing the software in C++ and of course using NI VISA as the interface.
Now... writing is successful. I am sending the instrument commands to configure it before measurmenet, I know as I can see the display parameters changing on the display and the relays clicking away inside.
It is when it comes to reading the data after writing the "*idn?" (Although sometimes this works after shutting everything down and restarting) and "FETCh: SPECtrum:CHPower?" commands that, regardless of the length of timeout set or whether the end terminator is surpressed or not, I get the 0xBFFF0015 timeout error.
I have attached my code (in c++) and a screenshot of the NI I/O Trace captured data.
This I imagine would be useful for anyone who is programming using NI VISA, so your help with be appreciated by many others I'm sure.

I thought I would try to duplicate your problems, but I only have a Tektronix TDS Scope that has USB.
I am a big fan of using *OCP? to sync instruments control and your problem is of interest to me
This very simple write/read returns the *OPC '1' return char consistently between 175-185 ms. No problem
Trying your short timeout with a loop, I do not get what I or you expected.
If I run this with an adequate timeout (something well longer than the needed 185 ms) it returns in between 175-185 ms with one time through the for loop. As expected. No problem.
BUT! If I try setting the timeout to something below the needed 175 ms like your 100ms...
Sometimes it works but it takes over 2000 ms to return but only goes though the for loop twice.
But sometime it does not work at all, taking well over 10 sec to exit out of the for loop with a timeout error.
I never see the queue error that you are seeing

I don’t think the queue error is coming from the instrument. You would have to send the instruments the SYSTEM:ERROR? Request before the instrument would report any of the instruments errors.
Be sure to set your Termination Char setting. I prefer to turn it off for the Writes so I control when to send it. But turn it on for the Reads
Also I noticed from your trace files that you use the *OPC? after a *IDN?. This is not needed as you will know the *IDN? is complete when your received the string back. In fact my Tektronix scope did not like it if I sent it "*IDN?;*OPC?\n". It would not send me anything back, not even the IDN.
Is the SAV command on your instrument so long that you need to be able to break out of the loop?

Create Run And Stop Buttons on Front Panel, rather than using the toolbar run/stop

I would like to make my vi more user friendly by creating start and stop buttons on the front panel. I havent found much info on how to create them. I have created a boolean stop button to stop my FOR LOOP.

Creating the buttons is easy - just select the style you want from the Boolean palette. What you need to do is change your diagram and the VI properties. To have a VI automatically start running when opened, open VI Properties by selecting that under the File menu or right clicking the VI's icon. Select Execution and check the Run when opened box. If you need the user to enter some data or change parameters before running the program, there's a couple of ways to go about it with a front panel Start button. You could have a separate while loop with just the start button in it and connect an output of that to a main while loop. This creates data flow and ensures that the start while loop executes before the main. You could create a simple state machine. T
here's a couple of shipping examples. Just open the Example Finder and enter state for the keyword. You could also use the Event structure. Again, there are several shipping examples. Instead of doing a search, you could also browse the Example Finder and look at what's underneath the Building User Interfaces topic.
p.s. I don't think you created a stop button for a for loop as there is no way to stop a for loop. What you can stop is a while loop.

CD/DVD in Satellite L300 1AM in WinXP- drive runs and stops alternately

I have bought a new Satellite L300 1AM
I have installed WinXP Home SP3 system (using nLite and SATA driver from Storage Manager), and all drivers from Toshiba website.
I have problem with CD/DVD drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N):
-copying from CD/DVD on HDD looks like following: for some time (few second upto few minutes) data is copying; then drive slows down and stops, copying is stopped, progress bar does not move; after e.g. 1 minute drive starts to rotate and next part of data is copying. Sometimes system stops to respond and one has to reset computer, sometimes computer restarts automatically...
-listening to audioCD music and watching DVD movies look similar, it easy to imagine...
-uninstaling DVDRAM in Device Manager and restarting system helps a bit, i.e. time of copying becomes a bit longer..., sometimes problem occurs with next CD/DVD in drive
-AudioSilencer do not change anything
-writing on CD/DVD is also impossible - progress bar stops after 1-2 minutes and nothing happens. Yellow diod is still on and to stop process one has to restart system...
What is interesting, drive works perfectly with newest Debian LiveCD version...
Has anybody any ideas???

SATA driver has been integrated with WinXP CD using nlite - this allowed installer to find HDD and to install system :) Driver has been taken from the Storage Manager package. Later, with system installed, I run .exe from that package again.
Do you think SATA driver should be installed somehow once again?
In IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I have only one position:
"Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller"
Should I have IDE Channels despite both DVDROM and HDD are SATA?
Lars_3, I agree, it MUST be software problem!
Perhaps something like interference or conflict between programs or drivers...
Drastic solution is to reinstall system completely and to check the correctness of CD/DVD-reading after each newly-installed program or driver... but I would like to avoid this way as long as possible :)
The problems occur with disks of various manufacturers, which work correctly on several other computers
PS CD/DVDs are read correctly also under Debian 5.0.0 installed parallelly on HDD

I have a program cod controlling temperature, i need subvi run for 5 minutes and stop for 5 minuts continously to controll current source supplying heater around my sample by continous pulses of mA.

For correcting this problem, 2 ways are-
1. Delete 267 entry and during next regular run system will take care accordingly means system will adjust /411, /418, /460 and obviously the net payment.
2. Another way is to run off-cycle type 'B'. See note : 431473

How to run and stop LabView code without using start and stop buttons

Hey
I've attached my code that I'm going to use with thermocouples. What I'm trying to do is: when I hit start button the code should run for a minute then stop for 5 minutes and then start again, this process should be repeated twice . Could you please suggest the appropriate way to do it.

you really dont need to repeat cases (2x)...using a shift register will reset your timer function once the timer has reached it's set limit. the "bool crossing" is used to tell me when the "5 min" case is done and increments the cycle count....ofcoarse, change the "seconds" constant to your desired time on the elapsed timer of this example
and you could "or" the stop to the "compare = 2" or change the select "wait" to "exit" with a constant connected to the stop

Running and stopping a batch script from Java

I have a requirement in whcih I need to run a batch script which in turn calls another java progam. Now I am using following code which successfully calls batch script and consequently the batch script calls the another java program and batch script exits.

Now the how to relate the cmd window to the java cmd started by test.bat and how can i send a ctrl+C command to this cmd window so as to close the underlying running java program.

Well, I'm having a quite different opinion on this: I would consider such an appraoch not nice but rather dirty...
If you want users to execute (MaxL) commands against essbase but also would like to avoid installing the client software on each client box I would recommand using web services.
User opens a browser, press a button, button (on the server side) calls a cmd (or sh) that calls the MaxL shell (on the server) that executes your maxl scripts.
We have implemented this in two ways:
1. over IIS (the older version, some years ago - but still running)
2. over Apex (ever heard about it?) You need a Oracle DB where Apex is installed an running (latest Version is 4.1.1 and you should not use an older) and you need to install the essbase client software on the machine where th Oracle DB resides - However you only need to install it one time...
If you only want to use the Oracle DB as a relais station (for you Apex Application and Web calls) you can simply install an XE on your essbase server and you have the prerequisites to get it work.
Maybe it helps somehow.

Satellite L350-20F - CHKDSK won't run and stops

When restarting to run check disk computer just starts as normal. If I uncheck both the options in the dialogue box chk disk starts but stops 3/4 through.
As the rest of the system works fine my main concern is if this will cause problems should i need to restore the system from either the recovery hard disk drive or my recovery disks?
The o.s is Vista Home Premium with all current updates installed. I would also note that the same problem occurs in safe mode.

As everything else is fine check disk is not that important to me. However as i suspect that some corrupt files are causing the problem i am concerned that this may prevent me being able to restore the system from the recovery partition or my recovery disks. If it wont cause a problem with this then i am quite happy to simply ignore it.

Start and Stop Trigger using PXI-6120 and DigitalStartAndStopTrigger.vi not working :-(

Hello,
I've been trying for a while now to get my PXI unit to capture a waveform between a Start and Stop (Reference) Trigger using the NI example DigitalStartAndStopTrigger.vi downloaded from the NI website. However, whilst the start trigger and stop trigger seem to be working i.e. the VI runs and stops at the correct times there is never any data read from my DAQmx compatible PXI-6120 card. So I can see the VI is running around the aquisition loop but the Property Node AvailSampPerChan is always returning zero... this has me slightly puzzled. I thought this might just be a driver issue so I've updated my box to the following software versions (see below) and installed the latest drivers e.g. DCDNov07.exe (also from the NI site) but nothing has changed.

Labview 7.1 (with the 7.1.1 upgrade applied)

before I updated I had the same problem but with the following versions:

So to cut a long story short I still have the same problem with the triggers... does anybody have any ideas what is going wrong?
To add insult to injury it the traditional DAQ example ai_start-stop_d-trig.vi was almost working correctly before I did the upgrade. It had the strange behaviour of capturing the AI0 channel but on the wrong edges (e.g. if I set Start on Rise and Stop on Fall it would do the opposite, Start on Fall and Stop on Rise).
I'm going to leave my box doing a mass compile over night but i'd really like it if someone could suggest a solution or point me in the right direction.

I'm out of the lab today but I'll try and answer your questions as best I can...
1) What are the values you have set for Buffer size, Rate, samples per read and post trigger Samples?
At the moment I have all the values (e.g. sample rate, buffer size etc) unchanged apart from the ones I mentioned in my previous post (see above). I have in the past played around with changing the buffer sizes and rates in the example VI but as this appeared to have no effect on the behaviour I now have them setup as in the download.
2) Does the program end after the stop trigger is implemented?
Yep, if I toggle the trigger line high then low I see the program exits the read loop and the VI stops running as expected.
3) Lastly can you give me the details of triggering method. Are you
using a digital train of users set digital pulses? how long is the
program running.I'm using the WriteDigChan.vi to manually toggle the first digital line of the PXI-6733 card which is wired directly to PFI0 of the PXI-6120 card. Generally, I just start the VI running and then toggle the line high, wait a couple of seconds and then toggle it low.
To me it all looks like it should be acquiring samples but as I said yesterday it just refuses to fill the buffer with any data (and hence no samples are read).
Any ideas? and thanks for you help,

Programmatically starting and stopping my vi at set times

I have a vi that runs during every production shift, however the running and stopping of this vi is currently manual, requiring a user to start and stop the vi at the appropriate times. I would like a way of programming the vi so that it starts every weekday at 6:55am and stops every weekday at 15:05pm. All my while loops run if engine status is TRUE, so I wondered if starting/stopping the engine appropriately would be sufficient. I will need to reinitialise all my values from the previous day – does this happen automatically by stopping/restarting the engine? I would also like to ignore weekends if possible.
I have attached the vi that I would like to automatically start and stop. If anyone knows the best way to program this (slightly messy) vi, then I would greatly appreciate the help.

My LV8 is having issues this morning and does not want to open the VI I sent you, so I jsut created the loop that I had added. It is very simple, but should get you started. It does not ignore weekends I have not had time to work on that. You could do something like every time the start time is triggered, increment a counter and when the counter hits 6 (saturday if you start counting on monday), do not start the engine and then when it hits 7 reset the counter.
