Nice webcam for mt Powerbook G4?

Hello,
Does anyone have any recommendation for a nice webcam for use with PowerPC macs? Would most if not all of the USB 2.0 webcams work with the powerbook G4?
My PowerBook model: PowerBook 5,8(5,9 is the 17 inch before the MBP).. I have 2GB of memory(one stick is 444 and the other is 533/667)

(1) I think you be better served by a current production UVC (USB) webcam that has a warranty.
Some examples: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
Don't add any of the software bundled with these cameras (unless you have tested and know that you need it.)
Mac OS; X 10.4.9 (and later) include all drivers needed to use UVC cams.
(2) If you are still considering buying an external iSight, understand that Apple has not sold external iSights for several years. These external iSights are great cameras, but they are getting old as electronics go. I have two, and both work wonderfully, but you have no idea how the one you buy now has been used or treated by its previous owner(s).
Many of us have good service from external iSights. However, as in this example from nearly two years ago, you may find it difficult to determine whether the iSight you buy now is functional:
  http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9015271
If you buy an external iSight now, buy locally and test it on your Mac before you pay for it. If you cannot do that, (try to) get a written guarantee that you can have the iSight examined by your Apple Authorized Service Provider and can have a refund or exchange if the iSight doesn't pass his checks.
Even if the external iSight you are considering is advertised as an NOS (new, old-stock) iSight, it may not be covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions, especially if you cannot test the iSight before you buy to be sure it is working.
(3) Users with Macs older than yours or those using Mac OS earlier than 10.4.9 should be aware of the additional information from Ralph's user tip:

  • Webcam for Titanium Powerbook

My mother is using my old Titanium Powerbook. I would like to use Skype with her. She was told at an Apple Store that there are no webcams for this computer. Is this true? Is it a USB problem? Any ideas for a camera.
    Thanks
    Dean

I checked them out today at my Apple Store. The tech there said you could use ANY webcam with a Mac. Obviously delusional, at which point I stopped listening to him. The Logitech box says minimum 10.4.1 and G4 800Mhz processor. The Ti book may be just 400Mhz. What processor speed does your Ti book have? That may be why it won't work on the older books?
    Thanks again

  • Webcams for 17" PowerBook

I bought a Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks and installed it. It immediately started working. I then logged on to SKYPE and was able to see the person on the other end and had pic-in-pic of what our webcam was showing. It appeared to be working on our end - however, on the other end the picture was scrambled. As there was no software to install - I'm not sure how to fix this. I have two options:
    1) Hopefully someone has suggestions on what to do -
    2) Return it to the store for a refund and get another webcam. I know Logitech doesn't support MAC OS - the Apple store on line was selling a Logitech QuickCam Fusion so I took a gamble and purchased a different model the store had. Any suggestions (lists) for webcams that will work on a MAC will be appreciated.

    Hello, Eric Emerson
My first guess is that you are correct and the problem is at your friend's end.
However, the problem may also be related to some Skype System Requirement. If your friend is not using OS X, he can find the Skype System Requirements for his system from Skype's Help pages.
All UVC webcams are compatible with OS X 10.4.10, so your camera is not the problem if it works with any other video-capable application.
Other than for software like iMovie, which requires that external cams provide a Firewire DV signal, your new UVC cam will work with your Mac OS X 10.4.10.
(By the way, you can still use iMovie, but you will need to use your camcorder or some other software application that will let you capture your video or movie clip with a USB webcam. Then import the clips into iMovie for editing.)
If your Mac is not experiencing any other problems, and if you have ruled out Skype System Requirements issues, both you and your buddy should try video with some other Skype user to find which end of the connection is the source of the problem. Then use Skype's comprehensive Help pages for suggestions to resolve any Skype-specific problems.

  • Need a webcam for PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11 -- help!!!

Hi - i am looking for a webcam for my PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. No Apple service center or other computer store in India has any idea of what camera could work. Logitech sells the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, but that is too expensive for me. The ones I liked (from Logitech) are the Webcam C200/C250M/C500/C600 and the QuickCam for Notebooks - though I don't know if any of these is compatible with my G4.
Any suggestions? I'm open to suppliers other than Logitech, as long as it does not cost more than $60.
Please help me ASAP - thanks in advance

In addition to specific devices your options are:-
Any Firewire DV output (6 pin to 6pin) Camcorder
    Any Firewire Web cam
Any USB cam that has Mac drivers and this Utility http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/
The chances are that any USB cam is going to have Windows drivers (if you need them for a Intel)

  • WebCams for Mac Pro

I'm looking for a good WebCam for the MacPro, and was wondering what the options were.
Aside from the seductive design, is the iSight way behind modern offerings from LogiTech, and Philips?
I found the Macam site, so should be able to work out which ones are a definite no-go, but wondered what other MP users are Skyping/iChatting with?

Any UVC webcam should work with your 10.5.x MP.
If you consider buying an external iSight sight-unseen from eBay or other internet seller, (try to) get a written guarantee that you can have the iSight examined by your Apple Authorized Service Provider and can have a refund or exchange if the iSight doesn't pass his checks.
Also be aware that, even if the external iSight you are considering is advertised as an NOS (new, old-stock) iSight, understand that it may not be covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions, especially if you cannot test the iSight before you buy to be sure it is working.
Moreover, if you buy an external iSight now, verify whether all connectors, cables, and iSight mounts that you need are included. If some items you need are missing but you still want to buy the iSight, this info may be of interest. (Note that Apple no longer offers the "iSight Accessory Kit, Part Number: M9314G/B" that is mentioned there.)
If you needs parts from the discontinued Kit or some part those listed in the iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions page and cannot locate them in your area, I recently found that the kind people at http://www.synaptech.com will help users obtain those that are still available.

  • USB camera for Ti Powerbook

    Hi,
Just got iChat and Skype set up at work (anyone else notice the quality difference between the two? its drastic)
Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a camera to use with my old titanium powerbook when I'm out of the office. Although there are threads on here that discuss which usb cameras work with OS X, I couldn't find one that mentioned cameras that will clip onto my screen nicely. All of the PC ones I found have too big a clip for the powerbook screen.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

I ended up settling for a Genius Webcam EYE. Bought this in New Zealand for NZ$20.
It clips onto the lid pretty well. It's slightly loose, as its also made to accommodate thicker lids found on PCs. Can be fixed by slipping something like a card behind the camera's clip.
The picture quality is reasonable, but nothing great. I'm not sure how much of this is down to my powerbook (it is an old 667mhz g4 after all). I get considerable lag with it, but it suits my requirements okay. I'll have to test it out on the g5 sometime.
Comes with OS X drivers, but needed to use the Ecamm iChatUSBCam (US$ 9.95) to get it working with iChat. The benefit of this is being able to also send a video of my mac's desktop over the web.

  • What is the best external webcam for the mac?

I am enjoying my built-in iSight webcam on my MacBook Pro, but would like to be able to have a webcam for my 12" PowerBook as well. what is the best way to go about this- buy a used iSight on the internet, or buy one of the few recent offerings that run for the mac?

    Well done, Glen.

  • Best webcam for a Mac Pro?

I'm not sure how much luck I will have, but here goes.
I have an old mid-2008 Mac Pro, I've been wanting to get a webcam for it for some time now, can anyone suggest one? — I doubt one of the cheap $20 webcams I can buy at the supermarket will even work with my Mac.
I've known Logitech to make Mac compatible webcams in the past, but I can't find any any locally.
Can anyone suggest something that's been tested to work with Mac? Thanks.

Thanks for the detailed response EZ Jim,
Yes, turns out after I posted this, I was reading through the Logitech Support pages, and found a similar answer in that no drivers should be required since Mac OS X has UVC drivers included as of 10.4.8 onward (great idea on Apple's part!) — with that information I decided to take a chance, and purchased a Logitech c270 for about $50AU.
So far I've tested it with a number of applications, I figured I'd try Photo Booth first, it works well.
I then tried to set up iChat with my iCloud account, couldn't seem to get that to work, so I called Apple Support, who helped me find the FaceTime app for Snow Leopard, got my iCloud account connected and was able to make a successful call to a family member. (I found the picture quality very nice for a small 720p camera.)
I also figured that since the webcam has a microphone built in, I'd also try using it for audio recording, it worked, which is handy meaning I won't have to connect an external microphone through the line-in.
I've still got a few uses I want to test it with such as Yahoo Messenger and Skype, but I'm confident that given my success so far it will work just fine. :)

The cheap & easy way is to just drag the app to the Trash.
    If you want to get all of the associated files use an app deleting app like the free AppCleaner;
    http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/
Just drag an app and drop it on the AppCleaner icon in the Dock and it will find and present to you all the files it thinks are associated with the app. You can uncheck any that you want to keep and then let AppCleaner Trash the rest.

  • One more solution for Silent Monitoring Windows 7 64-Bit - ERROR VOIP2037 Unable to open the NIC adapter for sniffing.

    Hi,
we are using UCCX 8.5 SU3.
After replacing the actual agent workstations with Windows 7 64-bit we had to face problems with the silent monitoring. (no sound at all and in the CSD the usual error popup "Silent Monitor-Session failed...").
In the CAD logfile I found the errorcode. "ERROR VOIP2037 Unable to open the NIC adapter for sniffing. Please reconfigure the installation."
After investigating the logfiles, starting postinstall.exe a hundred times and reading the Configuring and Troubleshooting VoIP Monitoring Guide.
I just learnt about the wonderful tool nicq.exe.
And so i found out that the driver spcd.sys wasn't installed.
Check in the registry for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\SPCD"
It seems to me that the "Cisco Supervisor Desktop.msi" never installs the driver one a Windows 7 64-bit.
After starting the NICQ.EXE as administrator the driver is being installed.
    Test 1: Check Driver Status
Driver not installed. Attempting to install it...
Driver has now been successfully installed.
SPCD Driver service is not running. Attempting to start it...
SPCD Driver service is now running.
    Test 1: SUCCESS
And after that the silent monitoring works again like a charm.
    Maybe that info help someone.
    kind regards, sebastian

Excellent information, this has been driving me crazy for a while now.  Once i saw this info I was able to get it resolved rather quickly.
+5 for you, (I tried to click it above but it would not let me.)

  • Best webcam for Mac mini core solo?

What is the best webcam to use for my Mac Mini with an older display - is MacAlly icecam 2 sufficient? and i'm still on 10.4.11. Many thanks for your kind responses.

I've been looking into webcams for my mini and have noticed that some webcams whilst the video works, the sound doesn't. I have an old webcam which my wife uses on our windows box, and I got it working on my mac using the Macam drivers http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/ The only problem was that the microphone wasn't supported, a recurring trend!! From my investigations the Logitech Quick Cam Vision Pro for Mac seems to be the best available, but it is a bit expensive £89.99 here in the UK.

  • Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

The detailed problem is that I had used the computer for a long time without turning off.  I wanted to give it to someone else so I needed to clean the data off. Before deleting anything I switched off then on and the HD seemed to have developed a fault as the start up routine began then when the Hd started the computer crashed and restarted at the begining with the startup routine and I have not been able to go further than this.  I changed the HD for an old one that I had replaced previously which had the same software system, Leopard.  This worked perfectly but on switching off then on behaved as the other had.
I figured that if I could start with the restore disc I could clean the HD or at least investigate it.  Hence the need for a restore disc.
Would this work or is there something in the logic board that is upsetting the HD and what ever I do will not cure the problem.
    Any thoughts??
