Nickelback and Arch with old HP laptop

I"m sitting here listening to Nickelback on my HP laptop.  It"s a 4150 Old by industry standards.
Setup wasn't easy, but I managed. Now that I have made my way through introduction, I find it interesting, What does arch intend as a user.
I read all over the doc's. If you don't know linux, this distro isn't for you.
I still consider myself a Noob, although I purchased my first linux distro as Mandrake 7.0 at BestBuy.
I'm not a developer or a radical, just a fireman who has made a hobby out of his computer and linux.
Eventually I plan to learn something besides the Basic and Pascal languages I learned in High School, but for now I"m happy making my little laptop play mp3's and movies under Linux.
Love Arch,
Gonna Put It On Me Destop,
Hope Yall Dont Mind,
Used, Gentoo, Debian, SuSE, Mandrake, Redhat, Fedora Core, Slack.
I hear that arch plays close to the linux vest.
I will tell you that there is no linux standard.
Bull Crap to those who say its standard.
There is no standard and they know that.
Every Noob has to learn a different system admin with every distro.
I always like to badmouth my favorite distrobution.
Damn Jarhead!

I know who that's directed at..
I'm going to try to be more on track now, I promise.  Except in off topic.
personally i don't usually respond to many OT posts or start them.
That's bull. You respond to plenty of my posts, and I'm about 99% off topic. I'm quite useless in fact. I mean, look at this post.
Dusty,
man hit the internet proof of life came out like two years ago. meg ryan and russel crowe were in it. so does this mean you are only two?
No, 10 times that... I'm only quite oblivious to stuff that has to do with offline media. Sorry.
I've heard of Meg Ryan though.

Hello if you go to the tools at the top of the screen and click on it.
Then you go to the options in that list and click on it.
Then you select security its the padlock its the last but one in the list click on it.
In that list you will have the options for the saved passwords click on this and then you can remove them.
please note this is not a secure way to save your pass words.
    i would not use this.
if you would like to save pass words try [http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/ and its free.
    hope this helps

I know some of the new versions dont work with  old laptops, and was wondering how this works when you go to buy the software. i currently have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 , what version of Lightroom can i get and how do i get it? Thanks

Lightroom 4 and 5 will not work.  You will need Lightroom 3 to work with 10.5.8 provided your laptop meets the rest of the specs.

  • Install Arch with dual graphics laptop

    Hey everybody,
So a few months ago I bought a new laptop, and ASUS X750JN. After I have my new laptop on my hands the first thing was install Arch Linux, but I came across an problem with graphics, probably a bad configuration and because I needed the computer for the university, I keep Windows for a while. Now that I have some time, I want to return to my beloved Arch but I have a serious question, the computer has 2 graphics cards, on-board Intel and an Nvidia and my question is, how can I install Arch and use Nvidia for some games like ETS, CS:GO and Guns of Icarus? When I tried installing before, the VGA was the Intel and not the Nvidia.
I know that Hybrid Graphics aren't full supported in Linux, but is there a way to use Arch with the Nvidia, even if only uses Nvidia.
    Thanks in advance,
Have a nice Christmas and a Happy 2015,
    Hugo Rodrigues.

So, like I said above, today I have installed Arch with Bumblebee and so far so good, but I just have a question, how I run games using optirun throw Steam?

Hey Huago, I'm not sure if will help you as I don't know too much about your configuration, but I'm also experiencing some issues while configuring arch on my lenovo T420s. I have so far succeeded in starting a simple x session after installing the drivers for intel and nvidia (xf86-video-intel xf86-video-nouveau) (see my thread here but my current problem is, that I can't start gdm
I'll work on this and opened a new thread here - maybe we can assist each other until everything is up and running.
update: I got it - maybe it works for you too? (very short description of what i did):
install drivers for integrated and discrete graphics card
    launch gdm as root
I have an Asus X750JN and I just install the integrated and discrete graphics and enabled gdm service.

  • Dual Boot Windows 7 and Arch with Shared NTFS partition.

    Hi everyone,
I want to dual boot windows 7 and Arch Linux.
Here's the problem... my hard drive isn't the biggest.  I want to store all my music, movies, pictures, and documents on partition that both linux and windows can access seamlessly.
I want the partition to be NTFS.   -- (the programs that map an ext4 drive to Windows are trash).
    Here's what I think I need.
    30GB NTFS to Windows.
    30GB ext4 to Arch Linux
The remainder (190ish GB) to Shared Data.
I don't want the swap partition because I have a SSD and 4GB of RAM.
What is the best way to setup my partitions?  And is this even possible?
    Thanks!

Not a problem.  I would create:
First of four primary partitions for windows.
Second of four primary partitions for /boot
Third of four partitions is an extended partition encompassing all the space not used by the first two partitions.
Put everything else inside the extended partition.
Mine is a bit more complicated, but this should give you an idea:
    ewaller@odin:~ 1005 %sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda

  • I want to dual boot windows 7 and Arch with an HDD caddy.

I am thinking of two possiblities with this scenario.  I want to first leave my windows 7 install on the hard drive that came with my laptop, and leave that HDD where it is, but in a few days, i'm getting a caddy so i can switch my optical drive for another HDD, which is going to be a 250gb.  On the 250, i want to experiment with arch, and maybe other linux distros, so i can get a nice feel for linux once again, it's been about 2 years since I've played with it.  What i am hoping to maybe do is switch those hard drives out, if I can get a linux install i feel 100% comfortable with, and running the windows HDD in the caddy, and the linux HDD installed in the motherboard.
I just have a few questions though.  First, is it possible to boot Arch when it is an HDD caddy? and second, would windows possibly work if i moved that hard drive into the caddy later?

perpulstuph wrote:First, is it possible to boot Arch when it is an HDD caddy? and second, would windows possibly work if i moved that hard drive into the caddy later?
Yes, and yes.  Both should be quite easy.
You should be able to set you BIOS to boot from one or the other - or alternately you can chainload windows from a linux boot loader quite easily (if/when linux is on the drive that the BIOS has selected to boot).

  • Arch on old vaio laptop (64mb ram, amd K6 550Mhz)

Can I run Archlinux + awesomewm on this old laptop? or that's no realistic?

The minimum system requirements say i686 architecture and minimum 64MB RAM.  You have the 64MB RAM and Here it states that a AMD K6 is i686 architecture.  So, it should, but it won't be stellar.
Edit:  Although it might work out of the box I'd also look at compiling your own kernel from scratch with only what you need to reduce that memory footprint.  Compiling a kernel is a pain but if it's pared down quite a bit would only take a bit of time.

Oh nice, there's a PassKeeper application for the iPhone and iPad.  Simply install it and it should talk you through steps, otherwise their website is probably a great place to check.

I really like the application 1Password, and it works across all the products, Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone.

  • Python SetupTools and arch with a sickbeard script

Hello. I'm trying to get a script working that requires python setuptools. The script is python 2.7 so I'm using python2 in my arguments but it's getting stuck trying to do something with python SetupTools.
I have installed python2-setuptools from the repo and python2-distributable?  and something else called python2-pip I believe that replaces setuptools?
Anyway I've really hit a wall here. The script just keeps complaining that it can't use easysetup which I also installed from the python site but that didn't seem to help either.  setup.ez_setup.main()
I have got it working under other environments so I know it is possible under debian distro's.
    The script in question.

  • PSE 10 Catalog from old XP laptop to new Windows 7 laptop

    Hi,
I have an old laptop with Photoshop Elements 10 and Windows XP. I am now changing to a new laptop with Windows 7 (64). Based on my understanding I should make to following steps:
With old XP laptop: Create a full backup of the catalog to an external harddrive using PSE 10 Organizer's Backup Catalog -function.
Install PSE 10 SW to the new Windows 7 laptop.
Restore the backup from the external harddrive to new laptop using Restore Catalog -function.
Deactivate PSE 10 from the old XP laptop.
However, I am a bit puzzled with the step #3 and I thought I ask first before doing anything.
In the old XP laptop I have all the pictures in the D:\<my username>\My Documents\My Pictures -directory. In that directory I have different kind of sub-folders for my pictures.
In the new Win 7 laptop I should have those in D:\userdata\<my username>\My Documents\My Pictures -directory.
As you can see there is a slight difference in those directory-paths. Due to that I assume I cannot use "Original Location" as a restore method. However, I want to keep those sub-folders which I have under My Pictures, so I cannot use "New Location" either. But if I use "New Location with the Restore Original Folder Structure" I guess I wll have something like D:\userdata\<my username>\My Documents\My Pictures\<my username>\My Documents\My Pictures or...?
So, just asking what is the proper way to proceed if I want to have same folder structure under My Pictures - folder, but use Windows 7 default path for My Pictures?

I guess it is always good to ask, since immediately after posting this question I realized I should use "New Location with the Restore Original Folder Structure" and the new location is just D:\userdata\
Of course, if you have any additional comments/instructions I should take into account, just let me know.

  • I have an ipad, and want into replace my laptop with it. Is there a way of running iTunes from my ipad to allow me to put music onto my old ipad classic without the need for a computer.

Please help me on this issue. I have the latest full size ipad with retina display and want to replace my old hp laptop with it. I currently run an iPod classic and nano from the iTunes on it, but i want to run them off my ipad. Is this possible.

The iPad is not a computer, it cannot replace one, and it cannot sync music or media to other devices.
You need to keep a computer around if you want  to sync ther Classic and Nano. It may also be useful if you ever need to backup the iPad in case a restore is necessarry.

Tunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.
