Night filming

Why is it that when I film in daytime my footage looks great. But night filming look grainy fuzz like in back ground??????

You're not going to get good low-light performance out of that cam, period.
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC32-Camcorder-Review.htm
camcorderinfo.com gave your cam a 3.5 out of 10 for low-light performance.
Minimum, for decent low-light performance, you're going to want 3 1/3" ccds (in my opinion). Even better, 2/3" ccds (if you have the money).

  • Faulty film projector effect

    Howdy,
I'm looking to add a 'faulty film projector' effect to a video I'm cutting (remember when the old films you had to watch in health class suddenly came off the projector? I'm looking to recreate that jerkiness). I know - it's cheesy. But that's what the client wants.
Do you know where I might be able to find such a plug-in?
    Thanks in advance.

    CineLook2 plug-in
    http://www.digieffects.com/products.shtml#C2
CineLook2 is available, and will support After Effects and Final Cut Pro. DigiEffects have sped up the slowest segments of the plug-in, allowing you to render smoothed grain as much as eleven times faster.
DigiEffects have also built in FilmMotion inside of CineLook2, so you don't have to pre-compose your projects in two stages anymore. As well as FilmMotion, they have included Interlace Reduction and a built-in colored gradient in the main CineLook2 plug-in.
CineLook2 also supports unusual frame rates, such as 10 FPS, 12 FPS, 16 FPS, etc... It will support PAL or NTSC sources, and now can add RGB, Monochrome, HSV, CMYK, or YUV grain!
The Custom UI now features a widescreen preview mode so you can get a much better glimpse of the grain as you are working on your clips. The Custom Grain UI also dissects each stage of the grain processing so you can see the influence of each layer of grain and smoothness as it gets added to your input.
Also included with CineLook2 are these other plug-ins:
AcidWash, Adaptive Grain, Banding Reducer, Bleach Bypass, Day for Night, Film Flash, Film Motion (integrated or separate), Fingerprints, Gate Weave, Grain Reducer, Handwritten Text, Letterbox, Light Leaks, SkinnyLook, Soft Focus, Solarize, Vignette - Of course, you also get their award-winning Film Damage plug-in, as well!

  • Managing movie files on a MBP

Until the last month or so, I've used a powermac G5 as my computer. Now that I've added a shiny new MBP with a 750 gb drive, I'm having all the normal growing pains that come with such. Amazed with the speed boost, having to learn to deal with big time limitations on storage.
Right now, I'm trying to figure out managing movie files. Up until now, I upload most if not all my movie files from my iPhone or Canon 7d into iPhoto. Then later, open iMovie and it "sees" them and does what it does and so forth. Basically, I was using iPhoto and iMovie to handle movie files.
Now that I'm using a MBP, I don't know that I'm going to continue using the powermac G5. Not much, anyways. The speed is way to amazing with the MBP. Not only that, I'm using Aperture 3 for managing pics and it happens to upload videos. I posted in the Ap3 community a similar question regarding managing movies with my current setup.
Should I turn off the import movies option for Ap3 and only use iMovie to continue to manage movie files?
considering movie files, which are primarily HD ones for me now, I have iPhoto, iMovie, and now Ap3 that I can import movies to. If i were using a big desktop macPro with tons of HD space, I really wouldn't think much about hard drive space.
However, now that I'm entering the world of laptop computing for the first time, managing disk space (as you all know) is a specialty all its own, I'm learning quickly. As far as Aperture is concerned, I referenced all my masters off the HD inside the MBP onto an external drive so I can free up some space. I freed up almost 400 gbs!
Now I'm looking at how to manage movie files on a MBP.
Real world example: went to a concert last night, filmed over 2 hours of movie files of the concert. Before I import them off my iPhone, I'm wondering where in the world to import them to. iPhoto? iMovie? Ap3?
What do you all suggest I do with a MBP and managing movie files? Should I continue with importing to iPhoto and letting iMovie then "see" them and do it's thing? Or should I get another external FW800 drive and start using it just for movie files?
What would you long term users of laptops suggest as the best long term approach to managing movie files (which program, internal Vs external, etc) on a macbookpro?
    Thanks

It won't take too much time for your hard drive to fill up with movies you've processed through Aperture or iMovie. Many users opt to dedicate an external hard drive for their movie projects, and I can recommend the G-Drive and Seagate Go Drive for speed and reliability. I don't own OWC drives, but they're rated well, too. A one-TB drive will keep you going for a long time.
Process your movies as little as possible. Depending on he content, you can lose a little every time you transfer the data. Use a single format to manage your documents, since this will minimize conversion. Your process flow seems to rely on iMovie to manage movies.

  • Camcorder

I want to buy a camcorder with enough features to have me happy for at least 3 years.  I already bought one through the internet that thought would be a good buy, yet it films at night awfully.  Sound is poor also.  I see on your website many options but I am unable to decide which is right for me without help.  Questions like, ? What does night filming capability means?  Does it film fine at night or not?  By night filming I understand it has a flash, not so?  I want a good camcorder.  Can anybody recommend one for me?

I am also looking for a camcorder but I do not know very much about them, can anyone give me some ideas of things I should make sure that the camcorder should feature to make it a worth my money?

  • Need help bad! opening a .mov file

I was at Church last night filming and as I was trying to hit esc to stop capturing, it would not respond and continued to record so I disconnected the Canon XL camera and hoped that it saved the footage however it created files like untitled1-4-av bt I cant open the files it says "the movie could not be opened, the file is not a movie file" these files are 4 gigs each. PLEASE HELP

    Hello llockett,
Sorry to hear of your situation. I did a little google search and found this:
    http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/index.htm
I have no idea of it's success rate, nor if it's applicable to your case due to the manner that the files were corrupted when you unplugged the camera (referring to Shane's post).
I'm curious about the Volume Format of your drive, and wondered if you could confirm that it is formatted as FAT32 by following the simple steps in my first post.
Whilst it won't be of any help to you at this stage, it might help others in the future who read this thread if all the details are rounded up.
    All the best,
    James.

  • Rewind live TV

Just got you view set up
Not clear if you can rewind a LIVE TV programme back to the "start" or just the last minute
I have tried all the relevant buttons and all that happens is it jumps back approx 1 minute and starts again

One thing that was better with old silver Vision box was that the if you pressed "record" during a programme, the recording would go back to the start of the current programme (provided that you'd been tuned in since the start, of course) - rather than the Youview tactic of picking up from the moment you pressed record.
A simple tweak, but so useful when you have got it.
(e.g. when watching a late night film and deciding to record it for another day - much better to have the whole film.)

  • How do you add night vision to a film?

I have to make a movie for my english class and it's suppose to be like Ghost Adventures. However, my camera doesn't have night vision on it. Is there anyway I can add night vision through iMovie?

Not really, but in iMovie 11 you can use effects to add the SciFi look and video adjustments to make it green. Can't remember if those were in 09.

  • How can I adjust the contrast of video on my MacBook Pro Retina so they don't look like they were filmed with an old sock over the lens?

I'd like to watch movies and TV shows, downloaded from iTunes or Amazon, on my MacBook Pro Retina, but they all look like they were filmed with an old sock over the lens. Daytime sequences look muddy, and night time sequences are incomprehensible with anything but the brightest objects rendered as black. I can watch the same files on my old MacBook Air and everything looks right, but no manner of tweaking seems to let me watch movies on my new machine.
I've tried adjusting the gamma. It's a bit better when gammas is set to 1.0, but I can't seem to set a gamma less than one. I tried using the Accessibility Contrast control, but it just lowers the contrast, swallowing my desktop into the dark abyss. I tried Applecare, but they don't have a clue. I tried the Apple Store. The "genius" confirmed that it is indeed impossible to watch movies shot anywhere but in the brightest sunlight on a MacBook Pro Retina, and it isn't just my machine, but every similar model in the store. He arranged for someone who really understands color profiles to give me a call, but Apple seems to have dropped the ball on this.
Is there some tool for stretching out the darker grays in Apple video? I don't want calibration. My impression is that my display, like the dozens I checked at the Apple Store are calibrated to make all dimmer grays appear completely black. I want uncalibration so I can actually see what is going on in the movies even if something is in a light shadow or shot at night. Hollywood has lots of trained technicians who can light and shoot night scenes that are quite comprehensible. I've watched a number of such scenes on my old MacBook Air. Now, I'd like to enjoy their artistry on my MacBook Pro Retina.

http://www.ifixit.com/ has directions for do it yourself.  Also look at PRAM battery instructions, as sometimes this can fix optical drive issues.
You can get external or internal drives from http://www.macsales.com/
I also suggest in the future, take care of this problem while it is still under warranty. It may have cost you nothing.

  • I rented a film on my iPad but when I try and watch it I get a message 'cannot load video' as soon as I get to around 15 minutes. The film is fully downloaded and paid for.

I Rented the film inhale on my iPad a few nights ago, this is not the first time I've rented from I turnes, I've don't it many times before and never had any problems. This time I cannot get the film to load. Every time I try to play the video it comes up with a message saying 'cannot load video' as soon as I reach around 15 minutes of the movi. and then shuts the video down. I'm annoyed because having got 15 minutes in my film will now expire in 48 hours even though I can't actually watch it. I'd like to see it tonight if anybody can help please, thanks.

Having the same problem. Watched 25 minutes of a rental and it stopped with the message"unable to load video"

  • HELP! Extremely Worried for Film Project (lost files) (please read urgent)

Okay so here is the dilemma-
Here I am tonight, plugging away at the editing process for a short film that I filmed in California back in February, and have had various other film producers and buddies filming at random times out there since. I had all of my footage on a WD Storage drive (this included pretty much all of the video files), and I had already imported all of the files into premiere and was about to begin editing the footage with them. Suddenly, I noticed that I was going low in memory space on my hard drive that I was working on, so I saved my Premiere File, then selected it, dropped it over into the WD Storage Drive that also contained all the footage from the film, and clicked on it to open it from there. However, when I opened the premiere file this time, it asked me to located "MVI_6104.mov", the first .mov file out of 400 that I had in there... and I couldn't find it. I looked for the source files in the new hard drive I'd just moved my premiere file into (where they just were at), i looked for them in my old hard drive, and in the three additional hard drives I have sitting next to my Mac... but the files had simply vanished without a trace. I checked the trash, nothing, and I havent deleted any files all night. They're simply gone, and I've hand combed every inch of every hard drive... will someone please help me? Without this footage I am dead and I am willing to get it back at all costs. Already ran a few of the free data recovery scans, but to no avail.. they picked up nothing. I literally have no idea what happened and I am currently having a panic attack. Thank you so much for your time and I really hope you can help me find an answer.
    Thanks.
    -Colin

    @JudeCotter-
The files used to be in a clearly marked folder on my hard drive labelled "Death Rides The Apocalypse Source Files" (the name of the film). I've searched every hard drive I own for the files and nothing. I can't find even a trace of them existing in the first place. The entire folder that used to be there is gone along with the files! Very strange.
    @shooternz-
Thanks. I searched the external drive first with data deletion recovery services, then by myself and I hand combed through all of the folders and video files. I even specifically searched the drive for file names in case I missed something, but nothing. I run OS X 10.6.8, and Premiere Pro CS5.5 The original source files were on the external hard drive with a tetrabyte of space that I attempted to move the PPro project onto, but now their original folders, names, files and everything have literally vanished. The project file doesn't matter since I just started editing but I lost all of the footage in there. The external hard drive still has around 765.3 GB of space left so I doubt I killed it simply moving a project over , but you never know. It was odd, when I moved it, the "Move In Progress" window with the twisting progress bar flashed for a second that it was to move 186.5 GB (which would accurately be around the amount of footage we had), but suddenly flashed and just moved it over in a second. Maybe this will shed some light. I'm extremely confused and worried. Thank you.
