NIght Time, Rain, Wet... Speed goes from 1500 to 300 (if I'm lucky).

What is the best way to deal with Verizon on this issue?  Wife is tired of DSL not working when it gets dark or rains and wants it out of the house by next weekend.  She wants OptOnline like we have at another location.
What is the best way to handle this?  Are there any buzz-words to get what we are paying for or is it just not something that is very stable and better to go with Cable when you need broadband.

Get FiOS. That's how I fixed it. The problem is telephone service is tariffed, that means Verizon is legally oblgiated to offer it, and it must meet certain technical standards. So if your telephone services to down the toilet after dark, or when it rains, Verizon is legally required to fix it.
DSL services are unregulated, no tariff, no legal obligation for it to work to any standard at all, or fix it other than commercial law if it is broken.
What you are in fact seeing is that you have poor copper pair connecting you between the CO and the your home. Unfortunately what is poor for DSL may be perfectly acceptable for POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service).
So Verizon has no legal obligation, and cannot be compelled to replace or even repair a copper pair as long as it provides telephone service within the tariff. Maybe you can convince Verizon to repair or replace your copper pair, but if I were betting, I'd bet very heavy against.
In rather blunt terms, you are out of luck. (I used to lose 500kbps everytime it rained, and if I could hear thunder, I could guarantee my DSL service was out). FiOs doesn't have this kind of issue. With FiOS it is pretty much an all or nothing proposition. You either get the essentially the promised data rates, or you get nothing at all.

    So for the past 2 days, my internet has been having weird spikes. It will do its regular speed when downloading things (about 3.5 mb/s) to being so slow it's pointless to even download (downwards of a few bytes a second). I've tried the obvious stuff of resetting the router, trying both wired and wireless, keeping the router off for a set amount of time and turning it on etc. Is there any way to solve this issue without having to call an engineer to the house?

    That's weird, same thing started happening to me from last night. When I run speedtests on any site it always comes back at what I would expect, but realtime downloads are just shocking (see below). BT said it must be something to do with my setup... but I never used to have this problem and this is happening regardless of the download source e.g. downloads on steam, downloads on my PS4 etc..

  • Time Machine Issue when going from WiFi Network to Ethernet cable

    I have my WD network drive attached to my router so I can do Time Machine backups wirelessly. I updated my ancient Mac to Snow Leopard the other day for software reasons, and when I went to backup via Time Machine it said I had 4.6GB to backup. Ok. Don't understand why, but assume it has to do with the OS update. I thought it would quicker to do it through the Ethernet cable, but when I unplugged it from the router and into the Mac Time Machine said it couldn't locate it. that seemed very, very odd. I put it back into the router, and it re-appeared. The bummer is, after two days it's less than half way through the backup. I'm just going to keep it going and hope for the best, but if anybody has any thoughts on this Im all ears.

    I decided to change the external drive setup to be a wireless drive over our home network, plugged into my Airport Extreme
    Unfortunately, Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
    Some users seem to be able to make this work anyway, some have some success and some have no success. At best, it is not a reliable method to protect your data.
    Time Machine stores backups differently depending on whether the drive is attached directly to your Mac compared to a drive that works over a network.
    That's why Time Machine will make a complete new backup of your Mac when the drive is located at the AirPort Extreme. It may well be that there is not enough space on the drive to allow this.
    Options...
    1) keep the drive attached to your Mac. This is supported and works well.
    2) Erase the drive or add a new drive and start over with a new complete backup on the drive at the AirPort Extreme
    If you go for #2, I would suggest that you also develop a secondary backup plan in case things do not work out.
    I've experimented 3-4 times with Time Machine backups at the AirPort Extreme and in each case.....they work fine for a few weeks or so. Then I get messages that the backups have become corrupted and I have to "repair disk". This works a few times until I cannot repair the disk and must erase the drive and start over again.
    Your resullts, may of course be different.

  • My apple tv keeps losing internet connection. I'm going from modem to airport and from airport to apple tv. I've replaced the modem and the apple tv and it still does it. Internet to my laptop via the airport wifi is fine and never drops out.

    I keep having to restart it every time I want to use it. Sometimes I have to restart it multiple times. The cord goes from the cable modem to the airport and then from the airport to the apple tv. I've replaced the apple TV and I've replaced the modem and the problem persists. I assume it has to be the aiport? But the wifi from the airport works fine.
    I tried bypassing the airport and going straight from the modem to the apple tv and it wouldn't work. That makes no sense to me.
    I had a friend over to try and figure it out and he couldn't. Any idea what could be the problem??

    The Ethernet cable from the modem should be connected to the AirPort's WAN (circle of dots) port and a second Ethernet cable should be connected between the AirPort's LAN (opposing arrows) port and the Ethernet port on the Apple TV. Is this the case?
    If so, what is the make & model of the modem that the AirPort is connected to. Also what is the exact model of both the AirPort and the Apple TV?

    I have noticed that when I power on and logon to my Mac, my wifi connection goes from full bar strength to none. I turn off airport, then back on, to restore my full speed. It will also sometimes do this throughout the day but it seems very sporadic and I can't link it to any event. Any advice?

    I have set-up a dual band network, with a TC at "2.4 ghz n" and an old Airport "g" connected by eNet to the TC. The two devices are next to each other on the top bookshelf of my office. In the family room, approximately 40' away and slightly lower (5 steps) I have an Express configured to extend the "g" network. We use our MacBook Pros in the family room, hers at "g" mine at "n". There is also an TV in the family room. Here are the questions:
    1. Will proximity of the "n" TC and the Airport "g" affect transmission speed?
    2. Should the AX (extender) and the Airport be set to operate on the same channel, or different, or does it matter.

  • HT4623 The software update option is not on my phone.  It just goes from "about" to "usage".  I have an iPhone 3G.  Every time I try to update it on iTunes, nothing changes.  I have version 4.2.1, no matter what I do.  Any suggestions?

    I have an iPhone 3G, and cannot update my iOS.  In the General tab, "Upadate Software" is not even there.  It just goes from "About" to "Usage".  When I try to update on iTunes, it always remains the same.  iOS 4.2.1.  Any suggestions?  (My PC uses Windows XP).   Also, my WiFi has completely quit working.  Works fine on the other iPhones in the house, as well as the XBox 360, so I am sure it's my phone.  I tried everything I could think of, including restoring the iphone to factory settings & then updating, but no luck.  Thank you! for any help you can give!  I plan to get an iPhone 5, but wasn't ready to do it quite yet.  Hopefully my phone can be rescued until I'm ready.

    That is the highest you will be able to go with 3g. You need 3gs or 4 to go any higher (multi processors and more memory needed).  Version 4.2.1 marks the end of your updates for that device.

    I am having speed problems since early December where during the day time my download speed is 4mb.  However, after 7:30pm the speed then drops very quickly to below 0.5mb.  I did a speed test just now and it is:

    I have tried calling India technical support, all I got was "we are looking into the problem" over the weeks.  Very frustrating as it is so difficult to understand them.  They keep giving me excuses as to the causes.  Today I am told there is a problem with the exchange. I asked when can this be fixed by, the response was they are not going to fix it as the equipment is very expensive to replace.
    I am so frustrate by all their so uncaring attitude that I have obtained a MAC code tonight.  Will a different provider be any different if the problem is with the exchange?
    Has any forum readers experience this speed dropping problem?  I can understand if the speed drops due to higher demands in the evening, but with this slow speed it is impossible to use the internet for anything meaningful as a web page took over 40 seconds to load. 
    I am on the unlimited Option 3, and my exchange is Poplar, London.
    Is there a BT moderator on this forum who can help me resolve this speed problem please?

    An update on my slow down boardband connection...
    I have reported the problem to "No Help Indian Technical Support" since 11 December, still no resolution! 
    I was told to wait until the end of February as work on the exchange may take place to increase capacity.  Nobody called to update me on what is happening since my last post.  Called Indian support for an update (17 March) only to be told my case was closed and problem resolved on the 28 February!  
    Then I asked to speak to a supervisor and the guy literally cut me off.  All I wanted to ask was why they think the problem was resolved when I am still getting the same slow down every evening.  I tried calling them again, but useless idiots who would make you answer their scripts again, but still they can't give me an update or what are they going to do about the problem.
    I am at a loss in how to obtain an update from them.  I am sure many of you who have the experience of calling Indian will end up with frustrations.  They will try their best to ignore you especially with questions they have not a clue in answering.  Every time they say they will call back, but no they don't. 
    Why is BT technical support be handled by such non-technical idiots?  The minute they have ran of scripts to follow then you are speaking to a blank wall.
    Anyone here know of a complaint number I can call or email?

  • Time Machine Router Speed

    I use an Apple Time Machine for my wireless router.  It is plugged into a Comcast modem.  For many months my output speed to my office has been around 60MPS but lately the speed dropped to around 20MPS.  A check with Comcast shows no problem with their cable.  If I unplug the time machine and then plug it back in the speed goes back up to 60MPS.  Is the Time machine beginning to fail?  Is the new edition of the Airport Express a better option for the wireless router?

    Your TC is not that old.
    Gen4 could be just on 3years if you bought it when they first were released.. or only 1year old. The wireless should not change (degenerate) in that time. But remember wireless is voodoo technology.. and your next door neighbour could have purchased a new high power router that totally swamps your TC.
    Do actual wireless survey around your house. The wireless diagnostics are built into the OS for Mountain Lion and Mavericks.

    You can also download suitable apps for ipad etc. Open the utility and start from the room where the TC is located to get a base level.. then walk around where you are having issues and check the signal and noise levels.. particularly look for neighbours swamping your signal.
    If you are expecting connections through a floor beneath the TC, that is the worst possible location. And buying a new TC will probably not help. The TC is designed with a flat metal plate under the rubber mat.. there is zero wireless therefore immediately below the TC. And getting signal through floors at acute angles can involve a lot of material. If it is the other way around and you are above the TC, then it is much better.. but range on 5ghz is still poor.. it will make very little difference unless you buy new AC wireless products.

    I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . Besides the delay it has been working fine as far as saving and playback is concerned. I have plenty of storage on the phone itself and it NEVER had this problem before I updated to iOS 7. I've reset the phone a couple times by holding down the power and home buttons at the same time. The reason I have an issue with this is that I'm always recording song ideas, melodies, and scratch takes; what I'm saying is when I come up with an idea I need to be able to know that when I hit record it will start right then so I don't forget anything that has just popped in my mind.

    It's renewal time and I'm going to downgrade my .Mac account from a Family acct. to a single.
    The 2nd mac (and only additional mac) uses .Mac only for Blog and Photo iWeb uploads... So can I...
    Simply update the .Mac login p/w info on the 2nd mac account with the main login info and he can then publish his Photo and Blog from there or will that overwrite my Photos etc.... (coming from the 1st Mac) ?

  • Going from MacBook Pro to MacBook Air

    I'm debating going from a 2006 15" MacBook Pro to the new 13" MacBook Air.  (I watch a lot of tv and do some photo editing).
    The screen size difference is the biggest thing that's holding me back.  Has anyone else made this transition, and have opinions?

    I too had an older 15" macbook pro, .....youll love the transition, forgetting all the improvements the AIR will have over your older PRO, it also has a sharper more contrasted LCD led backlit screen than your/my old Pro.
    Most all agree that a sharper nicer slightly smaller screen is greeted better by users than a larger low contrast older screen.
    To mention also.. fasters read / write speeds, better battery life by far than your old pro...etc etc.

    I've checked your account, and nothing seems to be out of order with your Acrobat Pro subscription. Are you launching Acrobat on your desktop? If, for some reason, your subscription has reverted to trial mode, I would expect you'd be presented with the trial dialog box. From that dialog box, you should be able to click License this Software, and then sign in with your Adobe ID and password. If that's not the case, please let us know.

  • Going from Pages to EPUB using InDesign?

    Is there a guide for going from a Pages document to EPUB using InDesign? The target is a book that is over 105K words for 425 pages.
    I am an absolute beginner with InDesign and I was hoping to more finely control the outcome of EPUB generation by using InDesign rather than outputting from Pages using Export to EPUB. Unfortunately, ID isn't quite as intuitive as I had hoped it would be and I've run up against the wall.
    Do I load each chapter as a separate document and then collect them as a book file? Or can the book be loaded as one document? I've been trying as one document, but I can't it to appear in the main editing window. (It shows up fine in the story editing, but that gets tedious very quickly.)
    Last, while ID creates EPUB files, can it generate a MOBI or AZW file for the Amazon Kindle? I found no references for in concerning ID in the documentation, but thought I'd ask anyway.

    I've already been hand-building the CSS & EPUB files. I was just hoping that InDesign would make it easier. Clearly, that's not the case.
    Apple's Pages does a very good job generating an EPUB which only requires a minimal amount of tweaking to the CSS to give it a final polish and further adjustments for e-readers other than an iOS device. Generating the MOBI/AZW for Kindle requires a bunch of jumping through hoops to prepare, which was what I was hoping to avoid.
    A few days to release, I have plenty of time get get the ebooks ready.
    A good heads up for any competent programmers out there—of which I am not—there is a huge market of self-publishing authors in need of a program that can take a RTF, Word or Pages formatted document and smoothly turn it into an EPUB or AZW file.

  • Time Machine Backup not only from boot volume

    As far as I know, Time Machine, makes a backup from a boot volume to a second volume.
    Is their a way to include a second or third volume in this backup. What i want is the following. On the boot volume is a normal OS X, we have a iSCSI-RAID connected with 4 1Tb Harddisk in RAID5. This give us high-speed access over the 1Gb/s Ethernet. We a looking to save this RAID to a external SATA HD using Time Machine, to take this home in case the RAID is lost by fire or theft.
    Is this possible with Time Machine?

    time machine will back up all directly attached disks not just the boot one provided they are formatted mac os extended. you have to remove the disks you want to be backed up from the TM exclusion list in TM system preferences. However, TM can only have one backup drive and will back up all the disks to the same disk. if you want different backup disks for different drives you need to use a different backup solution.
