Nightmare with Log Writer, active files please explain !

Can anybody explain how many redo log groups server may need in no-archiving mode ?
The documentation from Oracle web site says:
If you have enabled archiving, Oracle cannot re-use or overwrite an active online log file until ARCn has archived its contents. If archiving is disabled, when the last online redo log file fills, writing continues by overwriting the first available active file.
From this it looks only 2 groups are needed. I dont get how is it possible to overwrite active file ??? I think I should be written by dbw and become inactive first. Is that the reason I get "checkpoint has not completed" warnings in the log and pure performance ?

I believe the minimum required by oracle is 2 groups.
Obviously, this won't cut it in ARCHIVELOG mode for most databases. But then, you were referring to NOARCHIVELOG mode. I tend to go with 3 in this type of scenario.
As for the 2nd part. Only one redo log is 'ACTIVE' at a time. When a log switch occurs, it goes to the next INACTIVE redo log and starts writing to that. Thus, overwriting what was previously in it. DBWn doesn't write redo entries, that is handled by LGWR. As far as Oracle8i, the only part DBWn had on redo logs was triggering log writting by LGWR.

On the File menu, click Save As.
On the Tools menu, click General Options.
Do either or both of the following:
If you want users to enter a password before they can view the workbook, type a password in the Password to open box, and then click OK.
If you want users to enter a password before they can save changes to the workbook, type a password in the Password to modify box.
NOTE   Unlike passwords you specify in the Password to open box, passwords you specify in the Password to modify box are not encrypted. These passwords are only meant to give specific users permission to modify workbook data. For optimal password security, it's best to assign both passwords. An encrypted password to access the workbook, and one to provide specific users with permission to modify its content. IMPORTANT   Use strong passwords that combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Weak passwords don't mix these elements. Strong password: Y6dh!et5. Weak password: House27. Use a strong password that you can remember so that you don't have to write it down.
If you want to use a different encryption type, click Advanced, click the type you want in the Choose an encryption type list, and then click OK.
If needed, specify the number of characters you want in the Choose a key length box.
NOTE   Document property encryption is enabled by default for most encryption types and providers. It prevents unauthorized users from viewing summary and custom file properties (such as the author or any custom file information) in theProperties dialog box. When users right-click the password-protected file, and then click Properties, information won't be available on the Summary tab and Customtab. Authorized users, however, can open the file and view all file properties (Filemenu, Properties command). To disable document property encryption, clear theEncrypt document properties check box.
Click OK.
When prompted, retype your passwords to confirm them.

Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

I need some help with AVI and IDX files please.

I've just been given a hard drive with a load of media on it that I need to work with in FCP.
There's a folder with many .AVI clips, and each clip has an accompanying directory file with the extension .IDX
The format of the AVI files is DV, 720x576, 48kHz.
For the life of me, I can't get FCP to accept the media. Log and Transfer won't accept them, and if i bring in the AVI files in on their own using File>Import>Files... I get a message saying:
Media Performance Warning
It is highly recommended that you either recapture the media or use the Media manager to create new copies of the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback.
I can click 'OK' for this message and the media will appear in the browser, but If I place one of these AVI files on a new conformed sequence, the audio needs rendering. (Sequence settings correspond to media settings)
I tried just changing the wrapper from AVI to MOV, thinking I could fool FCP into accepting them, but I get the same rejection.
I thought the audio and video signals might be muxed, so I tried MPEG Streamclip to sort that out, but even MPEG Streamclip doesn't accept the media, saying : File open error: Can't find video or audio tracks.
Could anybody advise me on how to get the most out of these media files please?

yes. I tried transcoding in QT, but they still come in with the same audio rendering required. I'm a bit loath to convert them all though, as there are 1400 clips.
It's not a huge problem, as they do play in FCP, but I'd like to sort out the audio rendering. I don't understand why it needs rendering as the media and sequence audio settings match, and it's not some weird format or anything, it's bog standard 48kHz stereo.

Problems with Log& capture AVCHD files in Final cut 7.0.3

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to log and capture a hole file of AVCDH (with several clips in it) in Final cut 7.0.3.
When I open the file final cut only detects have of the clips, the others are with duration: 0 and no content.
The first ones are succesfully transfered.
Can anyone help me?
The files were recorded in AVCHD 1080p 50.

That's why you can't convert...you are converting the supported frame rates.
yes, EditReady is TONS better. They are always on top of the latest AVCHD formats (every camera uses a different variant of AVCHD). It used to be that they had two apps...EditReady for QT formats and ClipWrap2 for AVCHD...but they have now rolled all of those features into EditReady...one app for everything. Problem with Log Writer

I got the alert from OEM that 1 session is blocking another 3 sessions. When i came to know what is that session, i found that the blocking session is caused by LGWR, it is blocking other 3 sessions.
How can i avoid the session which is caused by LGWR, to avoid the blocking of other sessions.

I have never heard of log wirter locking user sessions, I suggest you use the following SQL next time you see this problem to identify lokers and lock waiters:

Multicam playback a nightmare with angle viewer open. Please help!

I have a brand new, 27" iMac, 8gb ram, 3.4ghz processor, 1gb video card. Using Final Cut Pro X 1.0.5. Trying to stitch together only two Canon 60D clips using the multicam feature in FCPX. When the angle viewer is open, the video on ONE track will drop frames like a seagull dropping digested fish. It's not even usable. When I hide the angle viewer, plays back fine. This is a workaround, but I want that viewer to be open to make further edits...that's the point. I even lags when I'm making edits. How can I solve this...what is the issue?? Please advise!

Problem with java.util.logging - write to multiple log files

Hi guys,
I'm having trouble with logging to multiple files - i am using the constructor for creating multiple files with size limitation - FileHandler(String pattern, int limit, int count, boolean append).
The problem i encounter is that it writes to the next log file before exceeding the limit, can it be because of file lock or something? what can i do in order to fill log files in a given limit and then write to the next?

I thought it is synchronized by definition - i'm just creating loggers that write to
the same file(s). When i used 1 file instead of using the limit and several
files - all went well.Just a small question: all these loggers do use the same FileHandler don't they?
I bet they do, just asking ...
The problem started when i wanted each file to reach a limit before start writing
to a new file. Should i synchronize the log somehow? That's what I suggested in my previous reply, but IMHO it shouldn't be necessary
given what I read from the sources ...
What could be the reason for not reaching the limit before opening a new file?Sorry I don't have an answer (yet), still thinking though ... it's a strange problem.

Styles greater than 100 are deterministic, except for styles 106, 107, 109 and 113.

Non deterministic means the result of the function can depend on something other than the input to the function. So for styles of 100 or greater the result is non deterministic if that style returns the month as text (because different language settings
return different abbreviations for the month name. Kalman gave you an example of that.
The styles with 2 digit years are non deterministic because the result returned depends on the value of the "two digit year cutoff" option. See
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191004.aspx for a discussion of that option. SQL uses that option when you convert a two digit year into a date. So changing that option
can cause the result to change. For example suppose you convert '350517' using style 1. With the default two digit year cutoff of 2049, CONVERT() of '350517' using style 1 will return 2035-05-17, but if you change the two digit year cutoff to 2030,
CONVERT() of '350517' using style 1 will return 1935-05-17.
If you want to play with changing the cutoff date the above link tells you how to change it. But if you do, be very careful and do NOT change it on a production server. Changing that option will affect every connection to every database on that
server instance. You can easily break running code.

+ sign is to indicate the diskgroup you intended to place datafile. this apply to all database files.
without + sign,will be place in ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory. there will be NO error.
see example here: without using +
SQL> create tablespace test45 datafile 'temdg' size 10m;
Tablespace created.
SQL> select name from v$datafile;
NAME
/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/dbs/temdg
7 rows selected.
second example: with using + sign to specify diskgroup

Slowness...First Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
After that Repair Permissions. No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, security software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar and are randomly corrupted, when I entered something in the Youtube searchbar (when it was still working) it send me to a site with sexadds.
I tried restart my iMac and when I was logged back in, my dock preferences were reset.
Also tried to download some security software to check my Mac for malware, but when I did, I tried several, I got a notification that said something like 'dumpfiles (don't know if this is the right translation...) damaged'.
I'm taking screenshots from all the weird notifications I get and even three quarters off the screenshots I took in the last three hours are already unreadable.
It started this morning when I tried opening a Premiere Pro file on which I worked the night before.
When I tried opening it, it said the file was damaged and could not be openend.
I tried opening it with AE or importing the file in a new project but nothing helped.
When I tried looking for autosaves, this is the really weird part, there were none.
Even though there are autosaves from my other projects, this one was completely gone.
It looked like the day before never happened on my computer.
Also when I openend Premiere all the recent projects had been wiped.
So at first I thought it was a Premiere Pro failure.
But than, later on the day, I tried loading some RAW files from my compact flash card.
This is where I would get an error (error -36) which said some data cannot be read or written.
I tried importing the files with a view different technics, from dragging to importing via Lightroom and I succeeded with Image Browser.
But when I tried moving the files to an other folder the same error occurred.
While dealing with this issue I wanted to put on some soothing music on youtube.
This is when the next weird thing occurred: youtube wasn't completely loading in Chrome. I refreshed a view times, checked the internet connection and still no difference.
When I tried in Safari it did work but when I clicked enter on the searchbar in Youtube, a page with sexadds appeared (I didn't install AdBlock in Safari...).
I read about this 'phishing' where you are redirected to a site were a possible malware installment can take place...
I don't know if it's connected to any of the problems I've been having but I just never experienced this on a mac, I have been a Mac user for 10 years now.
On top of it all, internet started working worse and worse and now it's not even working at all. I had to fill in the password over and over, normally it remembers.
Just like my system preferences, all the preferences I had with Chrome where also reset.
Also somewhere in between I got this notification: Mac OS X must restore library to run programs. Type your password to allow.
To me this is all very weird and suspicious. I have clearly no idea what's going on. Could this be another sort of trojan horse or malware?
Some background info which could be helpful for solving this mystery:
two months ago the one year old Fusion Drive in my iMac just broke out of nowhere.
I got it replaced by a qualified apple repair store.
When I got my computer back, all the files where gone.
I got on the internet without AdBlock installed yet.
A game or whatever it was, can't clearly remember, got installed by accident.
I deleted it immediately.
Only two weeks later, I couldn't log in to my account. It didn't recognize my password and username.
So I brought my mac back to the store.
Here the repair guy said it was a minor thing and he just needed to reconnect my account. He also mentioned he found a downloaded game name Sparta and it probably had something to do with the error.
I asked him; could it be a virus? He replied no way.
I don't know why I couldn't be a virus, just because it's a mac doesn't mean it cannot be done.
So today I tried installing anti virus software (such as avast- was in a weird language looked like slovenian, clamxav - was in slovenian) but I couldn't install them.
PLEASE help me! I don't know what to do anymore, I work fulltime and I need my computer, I have no time to bring it in for repair, are there other perhaps easier ways?
Could this be the work of a virus or a malware? Or is it a disk permissions issue?

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:

If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

My server Intelligence Agent (SIA) can not start because the database service "SQLAnywhereForBI" can't start also. I got the following error :

I found the solution by following the advice given on the following forum:

In fact, I crushed the BI4_Audit.db and BI4_Audit.log files and I replaced with others that I got from another machine where I installed BO again and where the files are not corrupted . After I logged in to the CMS database by executing the command in the command line:
dbisql -c "UID = DBA; PWD = mypassword; BI4 Server =; DBF = C: \ Program Files (x86) \ SAP BusinessObjects \ sqlanywhere \ database \ BI4_CMS.db."
Once connected, I start the command:
alter database 'C: \ Program Files (x86) \ SAP BusinessObjects \ sqlanywhere \ database \ BI4_Audit.db' alter log off;
The query runs successfully.
And that's good, I can be connected to BO smoothly.
