Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 access via Lightroom 5.5

I posted this question on the Lightroom Forum but am not fully satisfied with the responses.  With apologies...
A profile named "NIKON 1 J3 (Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 70-300mm f4.5-5.6) - RAW.lcp" was added to the lens profile folder when I installed Camera Raw 8.6 RC.  However, this lens does not show up in the profiles for images recorded with the CX 70-300 lens mounted on my Nikon 1 V3.  However, when I open one of the NEF files using CS6 or CC the lens profile is present.
Can someone explain why this is the case?

You can test whether LR uses the folder you find the ACR 8.6 RC profiles in by shutting down LR, moving all the .lcp files in that folder to another folder above and outside the folder structure where they are now, and then start up LR and see if it still finds profiles.  If you can still select profiles then it is likely that LR is using profiles that are somewhere else, but if the profiles disappear then LR is in fact sharing the same set of profiles, and I don't know why the PC would separate them and the Mac wouldn't, then.
A further confirming step in the test would be, with the profiles still moved elsewhere, start up ACR and see if it can see the profiles or not, just in case there is some compiled or cached data for the profiles that both are using that isn't reliant on the .lcp files existing.  In other words, if you move the profiles from the one folder where you have found them, to somewhere else, and neither LR nor PS can see any profiles, then they are both using that set.
ssprengel:  I am in your debt for suggesting such an obvious test.  My graduate school profs would be ashamed of me .
I removed all the Nikon profiles from the LensProfiles directory stored under the system Library and found:
(1)  no Nikon lens profiles were found when using Photoshop except the one profile that I copied into the LensProfiles directory under the user Library.  Therefore Photoshop uses the profiles stored in LensProfiles directory under the system Library.
(2)  all required lens profiles were found when using Lightroom 5.5:  Lightroom does not use the profiles stored in LensProfiles directory under the system Library directory.
Conclusion (2) was totally unexpected!  Lightroom keeps a "secret cache" of lens profiles somewhere on my system.
Dare I ask someone to tell me why Lightroom uses lens profiles in this manner?

Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported.  There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

  • Nikon Nikkor 18-55 (non-VR), 55-200 VR

I shot images for and made two profiles, available here (and also submitted to Adobe).
    NIKON 18.0-55.0 mm f/3.5-5.6
    NIKON 55.0-200.0 mm f/4.0-5.6
Both were shot under similar conditions:
indirect evening sunlight (even and relatively bright, but possibly changing in intensity)
8.5"x11" print on plain paper (crisp and high contrast, but subject to a little warping)
from a tripod (only pivoting the camera during each iteration, not panning)
one focal distance per focal length, all at f11 and ISO 100
nine images per shooting iteration (except one of the 18-55's iterations, for which I forgot one image)
    three iterations for the 18-55 (18, 35, 55); five for the 55-200 (55, 70, 102, 135, 200)
RAW images (NEF, converted to DNG for the profile creator)
default settings except for entering dimensions for the profile creator
    using a Nikon D40x
I posted a few example images are included as well, in case they are of interest. (If anyone is interested in the RAW images, I'd be glad to share those as well.)

I have moved the profiles (retiring the server which I had them on before): http://www.markfickett.com/lensprofiles/.

    Hi,
I'am missing the Lens Profile for the above Lens from Nikon. The Lens is build since January 2013 and I hoped that the new Lightroom 5 includes a Profile für this lens.
Does anybody know when Adobe will update Lightroom with this Profile? Or does anybody has build his own Lens Profile?
    Best regards

    Hi,
The fact is that Lightroom is separate to Photoshop ACR, the Camera and Lens Profiles are kept in the following directories for Lightroom:
    Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom x.x\Resources\CameraProfiles\Camera ; and,
                   C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom x.x\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0
Macintosh: Applications/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom X.X/Right-click Show Package Contents/Resources/Camera Profiles; and,
Applications/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom X/Right-click Show Package Contents/Resources/Lens Profiles
Believe it or not I was just about to look at the package contents when I noticed I had a message.  You are absolutely correct.  I wonder why Adobe found it necessary to make such a design decision?

  • Error with Nikon D600 and PSE 11 in RAW 9 (.nef) files.

When I used PSE 8, I could easily open any .nef files and edit them.
Now with PSE 11, I get an error message that says my camera is now not compatible. I have had a Nikon D600 and use a Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor VR 24-85mm 1:35-45G, Nikon ED EF-S Nikkor VR 70-300mm 1:45-56G lens and a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm1:35-56G lens too.
The error message says "...file appears from a camera model which is not supported by installed version of Camera Raw ...". Why it PSE 11 not backward compatible?
I bought PSE 11 2 weeks ago. I bought the Nikon from a local camera shop in November 2012.
Per the Adobe website, I have installed DNG patches 7.2, 7.3 and 8.1. None have resolved the problem after fully installing the download (through Finish) and rebooting the PC several times.
I tried to download DNG 7.3, it fails
Where can I obtain the CS6 file the Adobe website says should resolve the problem too?
I have an HP PC running Windows Vista 32 BIT Processor.

I just caught the part about your  having "uploaded DNG patches 7.2, 7.3 and 8.1".
Those are not "patches" at all but stand-alone applications on their own right.  You don't just install the DNG Converter, you actually have to run the converter in a separate step and convert the raw Nikon NEF files to raw DNG files.  The DNG Converter does not do anything magically or automatically.  Point the DNG Converter to the folder containing your raw files; it works on folders, not on individual files.  But you shouldn't even remotely need the Adobe DNG Converter in the first place.
However, most importantly, what you need to update is your ACR plug-in.
No matter when you buy an Adobe application, it will ALWAYS need to be updated right away, and so do all plug-ins.  What you buy is always the original release, and by the time it's out there it will inevitably be obsolete.
If you go to the Help menu in Elements, I'm assuming it will have a menu item for Updates (or Check for Updates), that should offer to apply any applicable updates to Elements and to ACR plug-in.

    Sale: $2269.99
Hello, I have been looking into purchasing a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and was considering the purchase (order online or from the store) from Best Buy.  However, the price at Best Buy is $2270 and $1700-$1900 everywhere else and without tax if you purchase from the big NY camera shops.
I understand that BB needs to have some overhead built in because of their corporate structure.  A good example is the pricing difference between BB and those same NY online stores for the Nikon 70-200 VR2.  Best Buy has it for $2400 and they have it for $2160.  Thats about a 10% over price.  The 24-70 is about a 25% over price.
Is it possible that the 24-70 Nikon price is a miss print?  I'd like to take advantage of the 18 month financing at BB but not at a $470+ penalty.
    Thanks!

  • Nikon D800 Not Detected for Tethering - LR 5.3 - Windows 7 / 8.1

Win 7 Machine: Homebuilt, Lightroom 5.3, all drivers and windows updates up to date.
Win 8.1 Machine: Dell XPS 15 (2013 High Res Touchscreen edition). Lightroom 5.3, all windows updates applied. Drivers up to date.
Camera firmware up to date as of Jan 2014. (A, B and L all at latest versions).
On the Win7 Machine, the camera shows up in device manager, can be browsed in Windows Explorer and works with Nikon Camera Control 2.13. It does not  work in Lightroom.
On the Win8.1 Machine the camera shows up in Device manager but with a yellow /!\, it does not show up in Windows Explorer, it cannot be detected by Lightroom and Nikon Camera Control does not work.
Nikon Technical say they've tested against their Win 8.0 and 8.1 machines and it works fine. Despite being very friendly and sympathetic, this was about the extent of their help. They confirmed that there are no drivers for the D800 and that the OS should install the generic USB device driver, as it has done so on the Win7 machine.
Camera firmware is up to date, camera batteries are fresh, all tests have been conducted with and without a memory card in the camera. I've used a USB2 Micro cable, a USB3 Micro cable in both USB2 and USB3 sockets, as well as through a powered USB3 Hub and an Active USB3 extension cable.
All permutations work fine with Nikon Camera Control on the Win 7 machine.
None of the permutations work with Lightroom.
None of the permutations with with either Lightroom or NCC on the Win 8.1 machine.
Tried changing the USB3 routing mode from EHCI to XHCI and that didn't change a damn thing either.
Any input gratefully received, I'm flat out of ideas and very frustrated.
Capture One 7.2 works flawlessly on Windows 7, but their UI is lightyears behind Lightroom's so I'd rather get things fixed than jump ship.

    Hi Denyerec,
Since not even the Nikon software will tether the camera for you, it sounds like whatever problem you're having is at a much lower level than Lightroom (at least on Windows 8.1).  Tethering with the D800 is supported by Lightroom on both Win7 and Win8.1 (and works fine in my tests).  You can find some tether troubleshooting tips here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/troubleshoot-tethered-capture-lightroom-4.html
It sounds like you've tried a lot of that already, though I would definitely suggest trying a different USB cable if you haven't done that already, as that can make a big difference.
You should also check to see if the tether process is running, like so:
    1.  Connect your camera and turn it on.
    2.  Launch Lightroom and initiatate tethered capture.
    3.  Start Task Manager and look for a process called "tether_nikon.exe *32".
Let me know if any of the troubleshooting steps help, and let me know if the tether process is running.
    Thanks,
    Ben

  • Can't open raw files from Nikon D4s in CS3

I recently purchased a Nikon D4s & can't open my RAW files in CS3 or Lightroom, do I need a Photoshop upgrade.  I noticed the D4s has an minimum ACR plugin requirement of 8. Thanks Kate

I believe the D4s is a very new camera, and needs ACR 8.4 (the very latest version as I type this).

  • Lightroom 5 (5.3) not able to import about half of Nikon NEF files

    I have a Nikon d700 with SanDisk 32GB memory.
Tried to import in lightroom 5.3 and got error message at the end saying many hundreds of files couldn't be imported.

Hi,I found this solution from the other forum.i had solve my problems, hope its help u too
This may be a permissions issue and I will tell you how to check that in a mo, but it may be even simpler than that - it is possible that the volume you are writing to is full.
If that is not the case go to the the folder or drive that is the destination for your import and R-click on it.
    A big menu opens.
    Select 'Get info'.
It is usually third from the top.
Another menu opens, with, surprise surprise lots of information about the file or folder.
Near the bottom is a heading 'Sharing & Permissions:'
The information in that tells you what the current state of play is as well as ability to change it.
Let us know how you go.

  • Switching from Nikon Capture to Lightroom

    Hi,
This has probably been asked before but I couldn't find it by searching. I have been using Nikon Capture for years and now I want to start using Lightroom. I shoot in RAW and capture saves all the edits back into the NEF file. Lightroom, however, doesn't read any of these edits, at least that I can find.
Is there anyway to get Lightroom to read edits that were made in Nikon Capture and saved back into the NEF file?
    Thanks,
    Bryan

Unless you want to redo the NEFs in LR, the best you can do is save the NC upgraded NEFS as Tifs (uncompressed) and then open those in LR for any further, relatively moderate, changes--and those changes will be written to the TIFs by LR.
Otherwise, you are stuck with NC--I'll say a little prayer for your patience as you wait for NC to grind out things :)

  • Nikon D300 recognition

My Mac doesn't recognize my Nikon D300. The camera icon doesn't show up on the desktop. I'm able to access and download photos via Image Capture and/or Lightroom. But when NIkon offered a firmware upgrade, I had to do it via an old D200, which did show up on the desktop.
It doesn't matter whether the images are RAW or jpg, the Mac desktop doesn't recognize the camera or the card reader with the D300 CF card loaded.

You need to change the USB option to "Mass Storage" in the camera setup menu before you connect the D300 to the Mac. Then the camera mount on the desktop. As a default the USB option is set to MTP/PTP, which is what you want to have the camera on during regular use to get Photoshop/Lightroom etc. to recognise the camera and start the picture download program.
The whole procedure for installation of the firmware update is described in detail here:
