Either way, it wont eject or mount, and still doesn't show up on desktop.
There are no ticking noises coming from the hard drive, and it lights up still, and i have tried replacing the cords, and restarting/shutting down the computer, and have tried it on a mac desktop also - same problem.
    Any help would be great!!!

and have tried it on a mac desktop also - same problem.
Try this on one of the Macs ...
Open a Finder window. From the menu bar click Finder > Preferrences
Select the General tab then select:  Show External Disks

  • CD/DVD's won't mount to desktop

CD/DVD's won't mount to desktop. All of the boxes under PREFERENCES->GENERAL are checked. When I hold the "C" key during start up with the OS/X install disc 1, it still boots from the hard drive.
I can open the disc tray with the keyboard eject button; the eject logo appears on screen.
    Any help?

    Hello Justin,
First, are you using an external CD/DVD drive?
Second, if not, try starting up holding down the Option key until you see the Startup Manager (which will show all bootable systems available). Either click on or use the Tab key to get to the startup disk you want.

  • External HDD (for Time Machine backup) detected but won't mount on desktop

I have been using this external HDD as my Time Machine backup for many months now. No desktop display settings have been changed (I checked), but now it won't mount on my desktop. I suspect one of my kids was banging around on the keyboard, as they have done in the past, and renamed it. Unfortunately it appears they renamed it to NULL this time around. I didn't think that was possible, but I've plugged it into 3 different Windows and iMac machines, and in all cases the external drive gets detected, but then in all cases it doesn't mount. The Volume Label does appear blank in the device properties.
Is there a way to access my drive again to rename it? Will that allow it to mount again? Or is there a way to access it to just reformat the whole darn thing?
    Thanks!
    Tom

I don't think it's possible to have a null name for a drive so i suspect there is a problem with it. open disk utility. does it show the name of the drive? try repairing it (repair disk not permissions). if that doesn't help you can always reformat it with Disk Utility. select the whole drive ( model, not name) and use the partition tab.

  • IPod Video 80 Gig won't mount on desktop or in iTunes

I just bought a new ipod video 80 gig. And a MacPro.
It worked great for about a week, and works when it is not connected to the computer, but when I connect it it just displays the "do not disconnect" screen and won't appear in itunes or in the finder.
despite resetting, re-installing itunes, I can't get it to mount on any computer.
Is this a Apple Store issue, or is anyone aware of a fix?

    Seen these?
iPod doesn't appear in iTunes or on the Mac desktop.
iPod does not appear in iPod Updater or iTunes in Mac OS X.
iPod appears on the Mac OS X desktop but not in iTunes.

  • External disc won't mount in Leopard, but will in Snow Leopard

I have a 5-yr-old G5 networked to a new iMac. I have had a 1-TB external HD attached via Firewire 400 to the G5 for about a year. Yesterday it didn't show up on the G5 desktop. I went to this forum, searched under "disc won't mount", got some ideas, ran DiskWarrior and Disk Utility...but nothing worked. They all said the disc was fine, directories rebuilt, etc., but it wouldn't mount. This AM it occurred to me that I had the correct cable, so I tried plugging it into the iMac instead. It worked. The data is safe, the disc shows up, everything seems to be OK, but it won't mount to the G5. Why would that happen, and how can I mount it to the G5? And how likely is the disc to remain accessible?

May I hop onto your thread as I have a similar problem.
I have a 5 year old G5 PMac with 10.5 onto which I have daisy chained two UltraMax 1TB firewire 800 drives. For the last 5 years I have been able, even with out sharing enabled, to connect to the G5 from a G4 Graphite with 10.4, a G4 Powerbook with 10.5 and now a MbP with 10.6.
After completing the login dialogue in the past from any other mac it would give me a list of the G5, it's Hard disk, user directories and the two Firewire Drives. On selecting them the drive would mount onto the desktop as a network drive. This went well until monday when it became temperamental in the morning and after a few restarts and one successful mount it has not shown up since. If I come to the G5 via the Go > Connect to Server I get a dialogue "Could Not connect to the server because the name or password are incorrect". If I try to connect via the network icon in the side window of the finder window I get a network dialogue log in, I get a list of folders and drives but then when selecting the FH drive get an error message which relates to the alias to the G5 Server requiring deleting or fixing.
Originally it just connected without any messing but now unless i make the firewire drive a shared drive the process on the other macs cannot see the firewire drive. NOTE - After having made the internal boot HD of the G5 shared, I can now see and mount this drive from the other macs but not the external drive.
This is causing me to pull my hair out, I have run disk utility, powered down unconnected and reconnected everything .The HD's appear to be working ok from the G5.
I urgently need to connect the FW drive to my G4 to do some work but it also needs to be connected to the G5, has anyone got a clue why I cant get G4 (or any other mac) to mount G5's external FW drive

  • External HDD won't mount to desktop from 1/2 of USB Ports

I have an external Iomega HDD and when it's plugged into my left USB port it works fine but when it's plugged into the right USB port it won't mount to the desktop and I can't access it. It doesn't show up in the system profiler or disk utility either.
However other usb devices (wireless mouse for example) work fine when plugged into that port. So I don't think it's the drive because it works in other ports and the port seems to be at least partially functional... But not with the drive.
    Any ideas?

Is the drive bus-powered or does it have its own AC power adapter? Are you using a hub?

  • My Book won't mount to desktop

Had a power outage and My Book won't mount to the desktop. Running 10.9.5. Disk utility sees it. Won't mount it and says it needs to be repaired, but won't repair it. My book still is doing it's thing, light blinks and shuts down when Mac does. How do I fix this? Will I lose all my files? Please help! Thank you!

    Welcome to the WD Community.
As a recommendation, try using a data recovery software to get your files out of the drive.
Also test the unit on a different system if possible using a different cable.

  • .DMG files won't mount on desktop nor will my iPods

My iPod classic won't mount on my desktop, nor can I get the iTunes .dmg file (or any .dmg file for that matter) to mount on my desktop. My iPod has worked fine for years. Now it won't mount on my desktop but it'll charge just fine. It used to automatically launch iTunes when I plugged it into the USB port, but now it won't. And when I launch iTunes, iTunes doesn't recognize it at all so I can't sync. I've tried restarting my computer, upgrading iTunes, switching USB ports and restoring my iPod. Still nothing. I don't think the problem is with my iPod, I think it's my computer. Because I just bought a brand new iPod Shuffle yesterday (because I thought my old iPod was dead) and the brand new Shuffle won't mount on my desktop either and won't automatically launch iTunes and iTunes doesn't recognize it at all to sync it. (I checked and my iTunes is up-to-date.)

Well, now I can't get it to safe boot. I've done it before, no problem but it won't work, now. I restarted, holding the Shift key, and it never would start after 10 minutes or so but the fan just kept getting louder and louder. I tried it 3 times. Then I tried booting from the Disk Warrior CD and it took 3 tries before it finally booted off the CD—I would hold the C key and it would just sit there and not start up and all of the sudden the restart gong would go off, I'd still hold the C key and it did this 3 times before it finally started from the Disk Warrior CD.
Did you want me to try moving those files off to the desktop even though I can't restart in safe boot or run disk utility?
I'm gonna call it a night for now. Maybe I can try the safe boot again tomorrow. How long do you think I should hold down the shift key before I give up?
    Thanks again!

  • IPods mount on desktop but not in iTunes

We have two iPod Nanos (5G and a 3G) and while they both appear on my Mac desktop - neither appear in iTunes 10.0.1
I've plugged in using front and back USBs, trashed the kext file, re-installed the whole app then checked for firmware updates (which were all current). So does anyone have other ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Richard.

Well I've erased the device as described above and it still won't mount.
I actually went to the Apple Store as well and all they could suggest was the trashing of the applemobiledevice.kext and also support package which I'd already done.
Strangely though, before reinstalling iTunes 10 all over again, iTunes 4 started up and I noticed that the device mounted but when v10 was properly installed, it didn't so clearly this is a v10 issue.

  • Macintosh HD won't mount in Mac, but can be seen in Windows

So, of course there was a bad storm here in Florida and my computer shut down and now won't start up.  When you try to start it, it gets to the apple and the loading bar but just shuts off after the loading bar fills up.  I got in with the recovery disk and used Disk Utility to repair which just gets stuck at "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."  I'm pretty sure this means that my hard drive is ruined and I need to get a new one or something.  I have Applecare still so I can take it in.
The only problem is, like most dumb users I don't have any of my stuff backed up.  I'd love to be able to get my important info off the drive before I take it in.  I tried to do target disk mode but the other computer doesn't see the Macintosh HD.  I also tried to reinstall Mac OS X using the disc but I can't choose the Macintosh HD as a place to install.  In fact, the only way I can see the Macintosh HD at all (besides in Disk Utility - and it's greyed out), is if I boot into Windows.  Windows will let me see the HD and I can try to get some of those files but the stupid Windows doesn't let me move everything because it won't accept certain filenames or something Windows-y and dumb.
Anyways, is there some reason Windows can see it but the Mac won't?

In the settings for the netboot image in server admin check the box "Diskless". This will allow the local HD to be erased.
So I think it will be mounted in /Volumes but haven't checked. If you need a more detailed way to enable the "Diskless" setting say so.

  • External HD not mounted on desktop but available in File Open

I have an Intel MacMini which I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. The internal hard drive is about 80% full so I have bought a WD My Book Studio II 1TB external drive which I currently have attached by USB (as I saw some people were having issues with FW connections).
I use SONOS music players and have my iTunes library on this external HD. It seemed to work fine for the first few days but now the SONOS cannot find the music library. When I login to the Mac I do not see the WD drive mounted on the desktop but it appears with a green light in the WD drive manager and I can also see it as a mounted drive if I click in File>Open in an application such as Text Edit. My applications such as iTunes and iPhoto canont see the data stored on this drive  but within TextEdit I can open folders so the drive must be attached and working to some degree :-/
Does anyone have any idea why it would be behaving like this and what I can do to rectify this?
    Thanks
    Amanda

Try verify/repair the hard drive with disk utility.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

  • Printer won't print from desktop, but will from laptop

    Hi,
For some reason my printer does not print from my desktop, but it will perfectly fine on my laptop. It is USB connected. I have all the drivers, software, etc. for my Deskjet 1510 on my desktop, but it just won't print. Everytime I want to print I have to run the USB back and forth from my printer to my laptop. The desktop recognizes the printer and everything is plugged in. I have tried multiple USB slots and everything else works in those slots. I have tried the Print and Scan doctor also. Weird thing is the printer can scan to my desktop!
    Any ideas?
    Thank you

    Hey there @pepsitruck
I understand you cannot print from your desktop however, you can print from your laptop.
Could you please run the Print and Scan Doctor again and let me know the results or post a screen image of the results?
This diagnostic tool will check for any conflicts that could be causing the issue. The tool will show you a report at the end. If there was a problem that the tool could not fix, you will notice it in the results.
You can also try manually stopping and restarting the print spooler and try printing from Notepad afterwards.
    1. Click Start
    2. Type "Services" in the search field.
    3. Open SERVICES
    4. At the bottom, click "Extended View"
    5. Search for Print Spooler
    6. Right-click it and choose Properties
    7. Select as Automatic in the drop down box, close the Window
    8. Right click on Print Spooler and choose "Stop", wait until it stops and then right click again and "Start".
    9. Close out of Services and try your print again.
When you get to your response, please include which version of Windows you're running please.
Which Windows Operating System am I running?

  • External Drive not mounting on Desktop but visible on sidebar

I have an external drive Iomega 1T that appears on the destop on Snow Leopard and all is perfect with it, but not showing on the destop in Lion (installed on another internal), it shows up on the sidebar and can access it from there without issues. Disk utilities shows it and can repair permissions and all but can't mount on desktop, my only option there is to unmount it, but is not even showing up on desktop to unmount it.
Do I need to reformat it to mount on desktop? Any help is appreciated.

A little bit, yes. What got me a little confused was that all of my 3 internal drives showed up, and I thought that by selecting it to appear on the sidebar would be visible on the desktop. Thanks again, Lion is very snappy on my early 2008 8 core 2.8, like having a new Mac .
