Nikon AW110 .NEF Files in Camera Raw / DNG Converter

I'm a bit new to NEF, and even RAW to be honest. But far as I can see both DNG converter 8.2 and Camera Raw (newest) is not happy with the .NEF Files from my Nikon AW110 camera. It won't open them.
Is this something that will just be updated in DNG or RAW sooner or later? I have an early release of the AW110 and naturally there is not too much support out for it yet.
Please let me know if I should be able to open these or not. It's no worry if there's nothing i can do about it yet, I just want to make sure my camera raw or photoshop isn't broken.
Trying on OS X 10.9 (and 10.8) Photoshop 14.1.2 and Camera Raw 8.2.0.94
Thanks guys

ACR/DNG Converter 8.2 were released mid-Sept, which seems to be about the time or just before the Nikon 1 AW1 was available, so you’ll need to wait until at least the next release of ACR 8.3 / DNG 8.3 sometime in during late-Nov to early-Jan timeframe, I’d expect, unless there is something strange about that camera that requires extra time.
The first place ACR/DNGC are available is the release-candidate at Adobe Labs, so check back there from time-to-time:

  • Still can't read Nikon D60 NEF Files with Camera RAW 4.4 updatel

I've installed the Camera RAW 4.4 update with Elements 5.0.2, but I'm still unable to import files from the camera. Elements advises that files are damaged ...

My problem was that while I had renamed the old file by changing the suffix to ".old", this was not enough. I subsequently created a new sub-folder "old" and moved the old file to this new location. I had already copied the new file to the correct location. Once the old file was gone from the active folder, all was OK.

  • I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.

I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.  I get a message saying that Camera Raw does not support my camera type but it always has in the past.  The bridge no longer shows the picture view of my NEF files.  These are Nikon NEF files from the Nikon 5100 DSLR camera.  How do I fix this?

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.

  • I edited a .nef file in Camera Raw and PSE 11 saved it as a .xmp file.  I cannot open it now.

I edited a .nef file in Camera Raw and PSE 11 saved it as a .xmp file.  I cannot open it now.
I am not sure if this is an issue but Windows does not recognize the .xmp file and give it an icon with the photo's picture.  On a related note, when I edited some .nef files and Windows saved it as .dng file, it too, like the .xmp file, Windows does not recognize the .dng file and give it an icon with the photo's picture.
Do I need to download something to create this icon?

PSE didn't save your file as an .xmp file. The .xmp file is not the image--that's still the .nef. The xmp file is what adobe calls a 'sidecar' file, just a record of the settings you used in the raw converter. As long as it's in the same place as the image, when you open the nef in ACR again, it will open where you left off, with the settings you chose.
If you want to save as, you have two choices:
    1. Click the Open button in the raw converter window and save in the image format of your choice.
    2. Use the Save button in the raw converter to create a separate DNG file, which still must be opened in the raw converter and converted to an image format for use in other programs.

  • Why are the jpgs that are generated in my camera better than the ones i create from the nef file in camera raw?

i shoot raw+ jpg in camera, for some reason the jpgs that come from my camera (nikon D300) always seem better than the jpgs i create
from the nef files in camera raw. i am saving at the highest quality. the jpgs from the camera seem to have more detail in highlights
better color more vibrant, sharper. could my camera be doing some enhancements to the jpgs before processing?

I had similar thoughts back when I first started shooting raw. Really, it's just a matter of editing to your personal taste.
Yes, that camera applies lots of presets before creating the jpeg, as Trevor.Dennis mentioned. Also, as he said, you can far surpass native jpegs with raw.
If you need it more vibrant, make it so. If you need to bring down the highlights, do so. Need sharpening? Apply some.
Here is one of my edits that I made a tutorial of: Sunrise Raw File Edit - Adobe Lightroom - Landscape Photography - YouTube. It is one of my less dramatic edits, but still a good one.
I don't want to clutter this thread with links, but if you take a look at my Facebook page, I put a lot of before and afters up in January and February. A Google search for Benjamin Root Photography will bring it up.
I shoot in raw, and highly recommend it.
I'll leave you with a nice NEF RAW file before and after:
BTW, D300 is a nice camera, I've used it...

  • I'm going back to cs4 after using cs6 and I can't open nef files in camera raw.

I'm going back to cs4 after using cs6 and I can't open nef files in camera raw.

Each camera needs a specific camera raw version (ACR).  And each ACR is tied to a specific version of PS.  See this list http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

  • CS4 will not open NEF files. I installed DNG converter and it did not help.

CS4 will not open NEF files. I installed DNG converter and it did not help. Also, I tried to just "update" photoshop and it did not work. It is a new camera (Nikon 1).

Yes, you need CS6. DNG Converter is just a standalone tool to convert RAW to DNG files which then may be possible to open in older versions of Adobe tools.

  • Photoshopcs6  mac 0sx10.9 unable to open NEF files, already installed camera raw  DNG converter 8.6

just installed photoshopcs6 running mac 0xs10.9 , installed DNG converter camera converter8.6 and still unable to open NEF files

Which nikon camera are the nef files from?
If you go to Photoshop>About Plug-In and click on the words Camera Raw, what version does it say?
Have you tried Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6 to the camera raw 8.6 plugin?
(then you shouldn't have to use the dng converter, unless your nikon is a very new model)

  • Can't Open .NEF Files In Camera Raw CS3 - Windows 7

    I have a Nikon D60, Windows 7 Professional (32bit) and  Web Premium CS3.
I recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7.
I cannot get my Nikon's .NEF (Camera Raw) files to open when I select "Open in Camera Raw". I can see the .NEF thumbnails, but neither Photoshop or Bridge will open the files in Raw, you know where you can adjust all those killer settings non destructively.
I had cs3 installed on an XP machine and my .NEF files worked perfectly in Raw.  Not so in Windows 7. I have tried to update to Camera Raw 5.6 but that wouldn't install. Is there an earlier version of CR that I can get and use, or any other advice would help.
    Thanks

The last version of Camera Raw to work in Photoshop CS3 is version 4.6. If you HAD been able to open your D60 NEF files and now can not, then something changed...did you do a fresh install of CS3 under Win 7? If so you installed version 4.0 (what shipped with CS3). You'll need to go to the Camera Raw Updates for Windows and download an install version 4.6.

  • Bridge CS4 won't open .NEF file in camera raw

It says because photoshop CS4 does not recognize this type of file. I've opened plenty of Nikon .NEF files in Bridge. The difference is this is a D90 file and I've been getting D80 files. Is there a patch for newer camera models?

On a Mac I don't know which directory it should be in.
Camera Raw preferences: Bridge: menu Adobe Bridge/ Camera Raw preferences.
Inhere you can set the wished behavior for tiff. By default it shows tiffs
only in ACR when you choose to do so with right mouse click menu (open in
Camera Raw) or if the Tiff had earlier been altered in ACR, then it opens
automatically in ACR unless you choose not to do so.

  • Can't open D90 NEF files in Camera Raw CS3?

I've downloaded the latest version of the plug-in, and it works perfectly when opening JPEGs. However it won't open my RAW files, it says they're not recognised?

Unless it is listed in the ACR 4.6 compatibility list (in which case there is some other issue), the D90 came out after CS3 was obsolete so Adobe did not update the obsolete Camera RAW plug-in and only added D90 support to the current ACR plugin which comes with CS4.
If you want to open D90 files in an older version of Photoshop you can download the latest DNG Converter from Adobe's website, which will recognize the RAW files, and convert the NEFs to DNGs and then open those DNG copies in CS3...or update to CS4 (or wait until Spring and update to CS5--just a guess since the LR3 beta expires 4/30/10).

  • Updated camera raw / DNG converter for CS4 compatible with D800 NEF?

I have just bought a D800 but cannot convert my NEF files into DNG. I have Photoshop CS4 with latest camera raw updates available. I see in the forum that an update is available in the lab but only for CS5. Shall we expect an update for CS4 as well? Thanks

No.  There will be no more ACR updates for Photoshop CS4.  That version is no longer supported.  You can download the DNG converter and convert your images to digital negative files that can then be opened in the ACR that you already have.  Since your camera is so new I'm not sure if it's even supported by the DNG converter.  You might have to wait for the next update.
Your other alternative would be to upgrade your Photoshop.  Of course, that will cost a little money.  But not nearly as much as your new camera did.

  • Problems with NEF files in Camera Raw 5.3

I have problem with my NEF files in CR. I import them from my harddrive, they open as 8 bit NEF files, but in CR, the only option I have is a depth, no space, resolution or size option where it should be, under the image. I also can't click on the info line under the image to change depth, space etc.
I have the option to change depth from 8 to 16 bit, but when I do that, I can't work on the image in Elements because a dialogubox says its not adequate size (or something along those lines). It is almost as if there is either not enough information on my files, or that CR 5.3 can't read them. I have a Nikon d60 so that should be OK with the software. I also download my images with a cardreader so they should still be RAW files.
If someone could help me I would be grateful, it's doing my head in!!!

…but in CR, the only option I have is a depth, no space, resolution or size option where it should be, under the image. I also can't click on the info line under the image to change depth, space etc. I have the option to change depth from 8 to 16 bit…
In ACR with PSE, under the image you have just two options, changing the zoom and changing the depth (bits per channel):
Why do you expect anything more?
I can't work on the image in Elements because a dialoge box says it’s not adequate size (or something along those lines).
What is the precise error message? PSE 6 or 7, Windows or Mac?

  • Trouble converting RAW files with Camera RAW/DNG - CS4 Mac

    Hello!
I am using CS4, with Camera RAW 5.7 and Adobe DNG 5.7.  These are the versions listed as compatible with CS4.  I am using a new Canon Powershot S100.  Can I use newer versions of the RAW/DNG with CS4, or am I just out of luck? Please help!

Same story we hear again and again.
New camera, old software, and the often un-stated expectation that the software company should go out of its way to provide new camera support for free.  First thought by those in the know is "you bought a new camera, why do you feel you don't need to buy new software to go with it?"
Those same folks who bought a new camera might never consider asking a camera manufacturer to make their new camera compatible with their old software.  It's a funny disparity.
Adobe walks a tightrope of expectations.  As it turns out, when you download the latest free DNG converter version they actually DO provide new camera support for free - it's just that converting to an intermediate file format is not quite as integrated or convenient as using the latest version of Photoshop with native support for that camera to just open the files directly.  Nor do you get the SIGNIFICANT improvements in image quality that the newer converters provide.
Use the DNG converter, but if you care about your image quality you'll consider upgrading Photoshop.  They really have made strides in raw conversion.

  • My Nef files Abobe camera raw

My NEF files ( Nikon 800) is between 50-70 mb.  In ACR the workflow option states file size of 36,2 Mb  ( default)  Is there someting wrong in my set-up

Are you referring to the difference is size between the files on your hard drive, and when opened in Photoshop?  They are bound to be different, and I don't think you have any problems.  Well none to do with that at least.
