Nikon Capture NX or Camera Raw

Using Nikon Capture NX, Camera Raw best for photos?

Indeed different profiles have different ways of handling things, especially at the extremes - especially when one or more channels is clipped.
In addition to comparing profile behavior, consider the point curve in ACR - @Lr4 we can now reshape the curves on a channel by channel basis, and that way fix many of these types of problems - admittedly such changes may need to be done uniquely for each photo.
And of course if (Adobe Standard) profile needs a tweak for handling such end cases, Adobe may be open to that... - if not for older cameras (in which case such a tweak might change the appearance of already-edited photos), at least for newer ones.

I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.  I get a message saying that Camera Raw does not support my camera type but it always has in the past.  The bridge no longer shows the picture view of my NEF files.  These are Nikon NEF files from the Nikon 5100 DSLR camera.  How do I fix this?

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.

  • Density Difference from Capture One to Camera Raw

In Capture One 6.3.4, my backgrounds read 253-255. When I open the RAW file in Camera RAW 7.1, the background reads 241-245. Profile is the same (Adobe RGB). Suggestions to have the file read the same in Camera RAW? Thanks.

I believe its b/c Capture One and Camera Raw have different color profiles for the same cameras. So the same eyedropper spot in one wouldn't match the other. Color profiles for the specific camera not Adobe 1998, sRGB, etc. I prefer Capture One over Camera Raw because of the camera profiles from Phase One - I feel that they are a much better starting point for processing images. The color feels more natural to me. Why are you viewing raw files in both applications?

  • Why does my Photoshop Cs6 not let me view my Nikon D7100 photos in Camera Raw and photoshop when it does my Nikon D700?

Why does my Photoshop CS6 not allow me to download my Nikon D7100 photos into camera raw and photoshop when it does my NIkon d700?

    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
D700 first supported in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 5.1 (CS6 ships with ACR 7.0)
D7100 first supported in ACR 7.4
You probably just need to update Camera Raw in CS6 via Help > Updates.
Confirm which ACR version you have installed via Help (Win) or Photoshop (Mac) > About Plug-In > Camera Raw.

  • Nikon D70 NEF in Camera Raw 4.2

    Hi there,
I'm new to the forum. I have two questions. I have searched the User Forum and Adobe site in general in hopes of finding answers, but could not.
First question. Is Nikon D70 NEF compatible with Camera Raw 4.2?
Second question. When I open my Nikon D70 NEF files in Camera Raw 4.2, all the photos look extremely over exposed. The highlights are completely burned out, to the point where I can hardly recover them.
I tried taking a dual-mode photo (a NEF and JPEG captured at same time with one shot). When I open them both in Capture 4.2, the NEF version is still way over exposed and the JPEG version is normally exposed. The exposures look so completely different, yet all the exposure settings are exactly the same.
Any ideas what could be causing the problem?
Thanks so much for any insight you can provide.

The results of my conversion, based on the image you uploaded to
http://download.yousendit.com/D47FE36E76602801 seem to be exactly the same ones that were discussed here as recently as yesterday:

The "overexposed" phenomenon you are seeing must be a monitor profile and/or color management issue.

  • Bug report: Wrong As Shot White Balance for Nikon D50 NEF in Camera Raw 7, Lightroom 4

For Nikon D50 cameras Adobe Creative Suite 6 does not read "As Shot" white balance data whether it's specified or not. It defaults to "Automatic". We have the problem only for Nikon D50 and only in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Camera Raw 7.3 and Photoshop Lightroom 4. (Not in CS5. Not for Nikon D5100 or D7000 or Canon S95) .
There is a more detailed posting at photoshop.com.

  • Mac computer: New Nikon d300s, CS3, and Camera Raw

I just purchased a Nikon d300s. I had a Nikon d50, Mac, iPhoto, CS3, and Camera Raw 4.6.0.30. With Nikon d50,  no problem opening an image from iPhoto into Camera Raw/CS3. With the new D300s, the image opens into CS3 but does not open into Camera Raw. Do I have to buy CS4?

No, you do not have to. You can alternatively use the DNG Converter, which will process your D300S NEF files into DNG files, which can then be opened in CR 4.6 in CS3. The latest version of the DNG Converter, which supports the D300S, is currently in Release Candidate phase and is available here:

  • Is there a plugin out for the Photoshop Elements 11 for the Nikon d810? the camera raw 8.6 i downloaded isnt allowing me to open the files.

    Using a mac

You can't install beta/RC version plugins in PSE. They just don't work here. Also, you can't install any version of ACR 8 in PSE 11. When it's released for PSE it will only work in PSE 12.
So you could upgrade to PSE 12, use the Nikon software to convert your files and then send them to PSE for further editing, or download the free Adobe DNG converter (a free-standing program, not a plugin) and use that to convert your D810 NEFs to DNGs that PSE can understand.

  • I own Photoshop CS5 (Mac) and a Nikon D7100. Need Camera Raw to edit my pictures. What are my options?

Apparently, the version compatible with the D7100 does not work with CS5. Can I upgrade to CS6 without paying monthly fees? Any other solutions? Thank you.

That's what happens when I access the forums from my phone.
So to follow up, the Adobe Store is here: Creative Suite 6
Select "Buy" for Photoshop CS6 Standard, Select Upgrade, and you will be sent to the Shopping Cart.
Very carefully now, click the Edit button to change the platform to Mac, because the Cart assumes you want the Windows upgrade version by default.
Once you are sure that is all set, go on with your purchase. You will get a Mac-specific serial number and a download link via email.
The best part is your serial number will be on record under the Adobe ID you purchased it under.

  • I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Element

I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8.  The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma.  This one tells you what your camera needs:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html   This one tells you what version of software you need:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6.  (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13.   Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter.  Download and install it from here for FREE:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890  Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use.  That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.  DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless.  There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

  • Camera RAW for a Nikon D3100

I have CS5 but i cannot open my RAW files. My cmera is a Nikon D3100.

    Hi,
Nikon D3100 needs Adobe Camera raw version 6.3, in order to work with PS CS 5
Please check the ACR version on your PS CS 5
    1. Open PS CS 5
    2. If its Windows OS, then click help >> about plugin >> camera raw
if its mac, then click Photshop menu >> About Plugin >> Camera raw
    3. Check the version of the camera raw, if its less than 6.3, Nikon D3100 will not work
In order to update your Camera Raw, please update your PS CS 5 from the Help menu
This is the document where all the cameras along with their supported ACR versions are mentioned : http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Once, ACR is updated to 6.3 or greater (6.7 is the maximum version) then , the pics from Nikon D3100 will work and open without any issues.
    Thanks,
    Baljeet

  • Camera Raw et fichiers nef Nikon D 610

J'utilise CS5 et caméra raw n'arrive pas à ouvrir les fichiers nef de mon nouveau nikon D610. Que faire???

Adobe doesn't update the camera Raw setting except for  the newest versions. Too much of a bother and as an incentive to make you update to the latest and greatest CS  version.
If you go to adobe's web site and look for Adobe DNG Converter and download, and install it. It will convert from NEF to DNG supposedly Photoshop's native format.
Adobe makes fun of Nikon's File format as non standard. Yet Nikon has been using this format for RAW files since RAW files have existed on Nikon.
Apple provides Camera Raw updates for OSX on a Regular basis every few weeks. And they read all Camera Raw formats be it from Nikon, Sony, Cannon, Pentax, Fuji, Samsung, Panasonic, HP, etc you name it.
I chalk it up to laziness, not too talented code writers, or just to contrariness.

Is Photoshop CS5 compatible with the new Adobe Camera RAW 8.6?
I am using the new Nikon D810. Adobe Camera RAW has this new camera included. But I cannot open the NEF files in Photoshop CS5

    NO

  • How do I update CS5's camera raw plug in?

I have CS5, and just upgraded to the Nikon D610.  The Camera Raw Plug In currently installed does not include the D610.  How do I go about updating it?  I've done it for Lightroom, but that update didn't do anything for PS.

CS5 only supports up to ACR 6.7. Support for the D610 was added in ACR 8.3. You will need to convert the NEF files to DNG to use ACR 6.7. You can either use Lightroom (assuming you have Lr 5) or the DNG converter.
