Nikon D1, D1X, D2Xs, D3 .vs. Aperture 1.5.6, 2.0

HELP!
I have four projects with thousands of Nikon RAW (.NEF) files in each one. They are Nikon D1, Nikon D1X, Nikon D2Xs, and Nikon D3, and as you might imagine, the images in each project came from the associated Nikon Camera (D1, D1X, D2Xs, and D3).
I have been using Aperture 1.5.6 for a long time and love it. But like many others, when I bought my new Nikon D3, I had to wait for Leopard 10.5.2 and Aperture 2.0 to view and edit the the images from my Nikon D3.
My upgrade to Aperture 2.0 worked like a charm.... Except now I can't view any of the images in my Nikon D1 project. The Nikon D1X, D2Xs, and D3 projects are fine.
I migrated all the images in each project, but still no luck with the Nikon D1 project.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Calvin

If you are looking for a general sense of whether A2 is better than A1.5, I will tell you that I prefer A2. I used A1 for all of my work in 2007, and it was fantastic. I switched to A2 right away and it's even better. The RAW 2 converter is bad ***, and the changes they made to the interface are great. Now that the web gallery issue was addressed, my entire work flow happens inside A2, without any other apps.
The only issue i can report is that exporting seems slow, but it's actually much faster because you can export many different batches at once. I just get impatient waiting.

  • Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture version 3.6 on Yosemite?

Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture (version 3.6 500021000000000.3, Digital Camera RAW 6.0 - Build 761.5, Digital Camera RAW support 6000 - Build 136.1)
I used to be able to manipuplate Nikon Raw (NEF) images from a Nikon D70 and D3200 using Aperture, until the 70 died and the 3200 was stolen about 18 months ago. Recently I did two things: (1) I upgraded OS X to Yosemite and (2) purchased a Nikon D750.  I have successfully imported NEF files from the camera to Aperture, but the images do not render/ cannot be opened/ manipulated. Instead, I see a black thumbnail for each imported image with a cassette recorder play icon in the center of each image.
I can view the NEF image in Finder preview mode, either directly when viewing the images on the camera SD card or after exporting the previously imported NEF image from Aperture to my desktop or user folder.  Previously imported NEF image seem unaffected.
    thanks.
    D.

The current Apple OSX 10.10 Yosemite and the current Aperture version 3.6 do not have support yet for importing Nikon d750 nef/raw files. It usually takes Apple six to eight weeks to release a new digital camera raw update file for new Nikon dslr models. Once that digital camera raw update file is finally released, update your current version of Aperture and that will allow you to import your d750 raw files. In the meantime, you have many workarounds. In my opinion, the easiest is to save images in duplicate nef/raw and jpeg image files to your SD cards.
And for now, just import the jpegs to Aperture 3.6 from your d750.  Process your jpegs in Aperture - and hope your clients are happy with the jpegs and can wait for later nef/raw image processing. Be sure to save and do not erase your original SD cards that include the nef/raw and jpeg files - then when Aperture finally releases a new digital camera raw file update that includes the d750 - just insert your original camera SD cards into the computer platform and import the old d750 nef/raw files and edit/process them.
There are many other ways to proceed in the interim as well. You can always import your d750 nef/raw images into Lightroom (if it has been updated to convert the d750 nef files) and process them there. But for the time being, if you can afford to save and hold onto your original SD cards and wait for the inevitable Aperture digital camera raw update, this is a very easy and simple way to proceed.

  • Is the Nikon GP-1 gps compatible with Aperture 3?

Is the Nikon GP-1 GPS compatible with Aperture 3?

"A standard GPS cannot do this, and so in many cases will take 1-2 minutes to get a precise location."
No, that's completely incorrect. Most modern GPS chipsets will lock onto 3-4 GPS signals within seconds unless you've taken it somewhere far from the last time it was powered up and it has to search from scratch because it has to build a new almanac and ephemeris.
You're also confused about which technology you're talking about. aGPS or Assisted GPS has nothing to do with triangulation. It can only help improve time-to-fix if the phone has an active data connection so that it can download data that will help the GPS get a fix faster. No internet, no faster TTF.
Cell tower triangulation is so inaccurate that lawyers know that if presented as evidence it can easily be challenged and thrown out in court cases.

  • Nikon D7100 opening RAW files in aperture

Aperture won't open RAW files made with my new Nikon D7100. What's up? Photoshop has come out with new version of camera RAW which opens D7100 RAW files, why not aperture?
    Ideas? Workarounds?

See other threads on this to the right -->

  • Nikon D800 Multiple Exposure problem in Aperture

When I shoot multiple exposures with the new Nikon D800, import into Aperture (latest greatest version with all updates up-to-date) the image imported looks NOTHING like what was on the saved/merged image in-camera and appears red-red-red. Shot a bunch last night had issue with every one. Think there might be an overlooked glitch here. Everything else seems to work 100% with D800, but this might be glitch.
So, I wanted to be sure I wasn't seeing things, took the camera to kid's soccer game today to further test, got home and loaded 'em into Aperture, same exact thing. The blown-out ones are the multiple exposures (look perfect in-camera) and as you can see the following photo is as it was shot (non-red ones to the right of the selected 5 that are blow-out examples.)

I don't think it's magic dust and it's definitely been used for more than 100 years....there aren't Multiple photos, it's 1 photo exposed multiple times with and end net of 1 photo. This is NOT like HDR where you have multiple photos at different EV and merge, this is 1 photo and shutter actuated on SAME photo multiple times. In other words, there is no "series" of photos to look at....1 photo. Cannot understand why Aperture is having stuch a problem with this when it didn't have the problem with D700 files.

  • Can anyone offer info on why/how to upload raw files from Nikon D610 to latest version of aperture?

I just upgraded to the latest operating system AND Aperture software program so I could import raw files from the Nikon D610, but the files are still being imported as unsupported image format.  Is there a setting that I need to set to get this to work?  I can't believe I spent all day upgrading the operating system and then my old version of Aperture, only to find out it still won't support the raw files from my new camera.  Anyone else having this problem?

  • RAW Images show colour spots (Nikon Capture NX 2 vs. Aperture 2)

    Hi All,
if I compare my RAW images in NX 2 and Aperture 2.1 then Aperture is loosing that game in terms of image quality. After playing around since yesterday I see more details and much more sharpness in NX 2. To find out whats going on I did some comparisons. If I enhance sharpness in Aperture I see sooner or later artefacts, not really comparable.
But there is one more issue: I see colored spots (blue, green, orange). I didn't apply any changes to the RAW, just import and view "original file". I can't see those spots in NX 2. I disabled everything in NX, even all camera/lens adjustments.
Please see some example images there: http://home.arcor.de/stocky2605/
picture.jpg: an overview, the whole image
crop aperture.jpg: screen shot of Aperture import, no changes made
crop nx.jpg: screen shot of NX 2 import, no changes made
crop nx brighter.jpg: screen shot of NX 2 import, a bit more light to the shadows
Are there any ideas or hints what's going on here? What are these little spots?
    Thank you very much.
    Kind Regards
    Klaus

OK, time to say good-bye, I like Aperture in terms of managing my images, but today I switched over to CaptureNX 2. Over the last 15 months I learned a lot about developing RAW images, thanks to Aperture. Now it's time for a change, my images look much better with less time to develop then in Aperture. On the other hand, it takes me more time to organize them now. It seems, it's not possible to have the best of all "worlds" within one app.
So, thanks to Aperture and good bye.

  • Tethering with Firewire. Anyone? (Canon 1DMKII, 1DMKIIN or Nikon D1, D1X)

Can anyone confirm their ability to tether over Firewire with Aperture 3 under 10.6.4?
I've got two bodies that are on the supported list for Firewire. However, neither camera is able to tether. Aperture 3 can see them for import, but just not for tethering. The tethering HUD always says "No Camera Detected".
However, I can tether with my iPhone
Anyway, just wanted to confirm whether or not anyone else is able to tether over Firewire.
    Thanks!

I wish I could help you with your question, but I cannot. Your post however brought me to wonder where I can find the list of cameras that can be tethered and where can I find information on how to teather it?
    Thanks

  • Unsupported Image Format RAW (NEF) Nikon d7000 in Aperture 3, why?

I just bought a Nikon D7000.  According to the Aperture 3 specs, it supports RAW (NEF) format from this camera.  However, I get the message that the image format, which loads as thumbnails in the viewer, is not supported.  I just downloaded the trial version of Aperture 3 (I'm not going to upgrade from my current version if it actually does NOT support this format).
    I'm running OS X 10.5.8 witn 2.4G Intel Core 2 Duo 4G DDR3 memory Macbook Pro.
What other info do I need to provide to diagnose this?

Technically, you should only need to verify that you have at least the RAW Compatibility Update 3.6:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1357
Current version is 3.7 which can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1386
Note - I assume that the 3.7 would include 3.6, but am not sure.
If you already have the correct RAW support for OS X and are importing new images into a new or trial library, you might try running the 'Repair Database' option found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
    Good luck.

  • Aperture is current, program will not open raw from Nikon D4

    Greetings
Having issue with opening RAW files from Nikon D4.  Very odd indeed.
    thank you for your assistance.

Nikon preview is different as it is not using the OS X raw converter.
Are you running ALL these images through the Nikon software before importing them to Aperture?  That could be a problem because while the files are saved as "NEF" they have been modified by Nikon's software.
Have you tried a D4 image straight out of the camera (i.e. read it straight off the compact flash card)?  Do not use any sort of utility from Nikon to import them from the camera.

  • Aperture 2 - Nikon D300S RAW

I really love using Aperture 2 over Lightroom for a while... Just until I just bought a Nikon D300S. Apple doesn't support the Nikon D300S RAW format (yet). The people at Adobe responded far more quickly and already have a free update. Does anybody have an idea when Apple will release it's new RAW update including the Nikon D300S? Is there a workaround in the mean time to be able to work with the RAW format in Aperture (not switching to LR)?

The D300s was released in September 2009. Now we have December and there is still no support for the Nikon D300s!!
I love Aperture, I am a Certified Aperture Pro. After four months of non-supporting my RAW-Files I am going to switch to Lightroom... what a pity!
I hope that no one of Apple's staff wonders why people uses LR more often....
    Goodbye Aperture, hello Lightroom!
    It's really, really sad.

  • No Nikon D300 Support in Aperture?

I installed OS 10.5.2 and then tried to import some Nikon D300 Compressed Raw files into Aperture. They will not work! After import it says "unsupported format." What am I doing wrong?
    Kevin

Same issue with Nikon D3. I installed the Leopard Graphics update after the 10.5.2 update but still got "Unsupported Format" If Aperture is truly targeted at a "Professional" market, then it should support professional cameras in a timely fashion. I am revisiting my workflow decision.

  • Different appearance of Nikon D600 RAW in Aperture 3.4.5 vs Nikon View NX2

Hi all, here's a question/statement of an issue with Aperture 3.4.5 processing of Nikon D600 RAW images, appears the same with both Raw Camera 4.08 and 4.07 support versions.
I'm stating that something is incorrect in Aperture's Calibration of Nikon D600 Raw images, it's not a preview or color profile issue. Exporting the original unprocessed Raw image from Aperture and ViewNX2 clearly look different. Pictures to be provided below.
The issue is present in Saturated, or close to washed out, regions of the original image. The JPEG preview looks the same as the image in Nikon ViewNX2 but as soon as Aperture has generated its own preview the image looks quite different, and, in my humble opinion, outright incorrect. My closest guess is some sort of issue in the curves handling pixel values in the extended range. The pictures below was original taken in 14-bits per component, I shall try out how 12-bits work out.
At this point I'm not able to figure out any adjustment or fine tuning of the image to make it look like the original as seen in JPEG preview and Nikon ViewNX2.
The image below is a JPEG exported from Nikon ViewNX2, no adjustments were made. The image looks just like the JPEG preview within the original RAW image. Note the graceful transition from red-ish to yellow and fully saturaded (white) sun.
Now compare the image above with the one below, which is the same image but first imported to Aperture, then exported as JPEG without any modifications. There is clearly some weird banding occurring and there is no longer a graceful blend into the fully saturated sun.
I'm not really able to explain this in any other way than really high values, possibly in the extended sRGB range, is not handled correctly, which should be the way Nikon ViewNX2 deals with it. To the best of my knowledge, no automatic adjustments have been made in Aperture.
Hope someone has a tip to repair this or that there's a fix for it somewhere.
I can provide original Raw and/or higher resolution versions upon request.
    Thanks / Patric

    Thanks :-)
I've seen some posts and discussions about Raw Processing and that all software naturally do some things different. Nikon and Canon will have the Ace on their hands as they know what the cameras really do. Although the NEF (Nikon Raw) format is proprietary I expect Apple, and Adobe, do have agreements to give them some SDK or specs so they can read it.
That said, the artefact shown seems more incorrect than a different flavor. The banding cannot be resolved with any traditional adjustments. So, I'd be happy if anyone could
    a) Provide some tips on how to work with Curves or some other Adjustment to resolve this.
    b) Confirm they also have similar problems and if they managed to resolve it.
    c) Some Apple support tech could pick this up and follow-up internally.
    best regards

  • Nikon D2X mode calibration options

When I view a D700 RAW file in LR3, I can see the "Portrait" and "D2XMODE1" calibration options under "Camera calibration", but when I view a D7000 (one more zero) RAW files, the D2XMODE1 option is not available. Though Nikon claims that Portrait and D2XMODE1 are equivalent, I tend to prefer D2XMODE1. Does anyone know of a quick way I can port the D2XMODE1 option so that it's available for my D7000 files?
A related question: how close are these Camera calibration options to the Nikon Picture Controls? Are they mere approximations, or do they match up pretty well with Nikon's controls?

Is it the name D2XMode1 that you want, or the recipe for producing an image from your raw file? If the former, I guess you could copy the "Nikon D7000 Camera Portrait.dcp" file in the Nikon D7000 folder to one named "Nikon D7000 Camera D2X Mode1.dcp" in the same folder. I don't know if this would work, and it would be a silly exercise, but you're welcome to try it.
Each Adobe camera profile is custom made for a particular model of camera, and since Nikon don't make that Picture Control for the D7000, Adobe don't have a target to shoot for, so they couldn't make one. There aren't any to port, so you might as well take Nikon's word for it and use "Portrait".
In no case will you be able to get a camera profile that exactly matches the Nikon one of the same name. Copying one for another camera model will most assuredly not work.
As to your last question, the camera profiles are close approximations, close enough that a lot of LR users with Nikons breathed a big sigh of relief when they were introduced.
In any case, the profiles are merely starting points to produce what you want in your images. Find one you like and go from there.

  • Nikon D5000 to Aperture

New camera for me. Instructions say install Nikon software. I have older Nikon which Aperture recognizes. I hate to install Nikon stuff when I'm thinking aperture should "see" the camera but currently doesn't seem to. Need I install in Nikon software or might I be missing something here?
    Thank you.

Aperture supports the files from the D5000, so long as you're on Aperture 2.x:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
And you shouldn't need to install any Nikon software.
What do you mean by "see" the camera? Are you trying to use a direct USB connection? If so, and you can't get it working, I strongly suggest you just get a card reader, which is about 10x faster and much more reliable. Direct USB or Firewire connections to the camera are pretty much the worst possible solution unless you're shooting tethered. A card reader is $15 and will make these problems go away.
