Nikon D3 and CS2

I am interested in upgrading from my Nikon D2x to the new Nikon D3. At the moment I work with CS2 and have a few budget restraints. I would like to know if I can open the Nikon D3 Camera Raw/NEF files with my present version of Photoshop CS2?
Thank you for your help.

Since you are using Photoshop CS2, you must download and correctly install Adobe Camera Raw 3.7. That is the last version that was released that will work with Photoshop CS2. Camera Raw is a Photoshop plug-in. You cannot open Camera Raw by itself. It has to be accessed from within Photoshop or Bridge. And it must be installed exactly in the folder specified in the readme file that is available on the download page.
Since 3.7 is the last version of Camera Raw (ACR) that you can use, it would not be possible for you to open raw files from new cameras that were added in later versions. To resolve this problem, Adobe has created the DNG (Digital negative) format. The easiest way to describe this file format is that it is a "standardized" container to hold the raw data. The image data is precisely the same image data. It's just that the container has been standardized so that you can open that file in older versions of Photoshop.
The DNG converter (again, free-standing) comes packaged with a corresponding release of ACR. This is done because ACR and the DNG converter support the same list of cameras. So while you cannot use any newer version of ACR than 3.7, you always want to have the very latest version of the DNG converter. So as of today you would download version 4.3.1 and extract the DNG converter and put it anywhere on your computer (yes anywhere). Then just forget about the new version of ACR. You cannot use it. It will only create grief if you try to do so. Just delete the zip file and forget about the rest.
To use the DNG converter, locate your raw files. I usually open the card and highlight all of the raw files there. Then I drag them and drop them onto the icon for the DNG converter. This will start the converter. Just specify the destination folder for the DNG files, and then click on the Convert button. The DNG files will be created and placed in the folder that you specify. Should you keep your original raw images? That is a decision that you will have to make. I rarely keep my original raw images. But that is my choice.
When the conversion process is complete, just open Photoshop/Bridge and work as you normally do. The DNG files will display in Bridge. You can double click on them and they will open in ACR. The data is still the raw data and you have all the flexibility that you would have if you were editing the original raw files.
Just to clarify and make things simpler for you, here are the instructions for installing ACR 3.7 on a Windows computer. Pay particular attention to item #4. That is the folder where you put ACR 3.7.
Windows®:
1. Exit Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
4. Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats.
5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop CS2 or Adobe Bridge.

  • Nikon D90 and CS2

Now that I bought a new Nikon D90 camera, I started trying to take photos using Nikon's RAW mode (.NEF). However, my Photoshop CS2 cannot open them the .NEF files. I have read on these forums about downloads that are available for different Photoshop versions and different cameras, but don't know which download would apply to my Nikon/Adobe combination. The Nikon D90 is not listed. Your help would be appreciated. (I use Windows XP.)

Your camera was released long after development for Photoshop CS2 and ACR 3.x had been discontinued. There will never be direct support for your raw files in Photoshop CS2. You would be wise to upgrade to Photoshop CS4, which does support your camera, and ACR is much more robust. If that is not an alternative then you should download the latest version of the DNG converter and use it to convert your NEF files to DNG files. Then you will be able to want to those files in Photoshop CS2 using ACR 3.7.
I should have known that Ramon would beat me to it. :)

You would need at least CS3 with ACR 4.6 to natively edit NEFs from a D90 in PS:

It might also work to use the DNG Converter 4.6 or newer to convert the NEF files to DNGs and then those might open in your older CS2 ACR, but I’m not sure, since it’s a 9 year old program I haven’t used in years.

    Oh, dear.
If you use PSE as your external editor for iphoto, you need to save the images back to iphoto by using Save, not Save As and not changing anything like the name or format that would bring up the Save As window. (You may need to adjust the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing.)
OR you can export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, use file>open in the editor and then change whatever you want and either import the saved image to the organizer or import it back to iphoto as a new file. What you are doing is extremely risky, particularly to the iphoto library which you may easily damage by your workflow.
I would start the organizer holding down the shift key, then create a new catalog and switch to the new one. Then try opening the editor without opening an image and see if you get any farther.
PSE and iphoto are not designed to be used as you've been doing. You are trying to write to the iphoto library from outside iphoto, which is the fastest known way to corrupt the library and lose all your photos.

I have a Nikon d610 and am using PS CS6. I am unable to download my raw files through Bridge on my mac. I have downloaded the most recent Camera Raw files - 8.7.1 - what should I do next.

The D610 needs ACR 8.3 so you are easily covered there.  I am not entirely clear on the process you are using the bring the files onto your hard drive.  The safest way is to simply bring all the NEF files into a folder on your hard drive, then find them with bridge and open from there.
If still stuck, open Photoshop, and go Help > About plugins > Camera RAW and check that 8.7 installed OK.

The D610 didn't get out-of-the-box RAW support until Photoshop CC.
You can either upgrade to CC or use the DNG Converter to convert and open your DNGs in CS5.

Since pse 9 can only use up to camera raw 6.5 and the d600 needs at least 7.3 and the d800 needs at least 6.7, you can use the
8.6 adobe dng converter to convert those files to dng copies, which then pse 9 should open.

I just bought the Nikon D750 and my raw files will not open in CC Photoshop. Is anyone else that has this camera experienced this problem?
My Photoshop says it is up to date, but I am hoping that since this camera just came out, Adobe will have an raw file update soon.

DNG Converter is FREE.  Yes, really.  No subscription needed.
    - Baloney, NOT FREE, it's a proprietary software, not open AT ALL, see Legal Notices, so stop trying to distort the truth here.
Camera Raw (& DNG Converter) 8.7RC has been available since 2nd October, and opens D750 files in Photoshop & Bridge (& Lightroom using DNG Converter).
Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 8.7 Release Candidate | digital camera raw file support - Adobe Labs
    - Still a cumbersome process for this of us that PAID for software and support, the whole point of this discussion is to implement this directly on LR, so we, the PAYING users don't have to waste time doing a useless process that could be EASILY AVOIDED ig Adobe released updates as they are needed, or if they OPENED THE SOURCE CODE so the community could do it.
Adobe created DNG, which is a well-documented backwards-compatible format, which is free for any manufacturer to use.
See here for manufacturers who do (it's an old list, but you get the idea):
    http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/products_cameras.htm
    - Really? Did you actually read the site? It has PRECIOUS information that illustrate my point: Adobe DNG is an attempt to stop the OpenSource community from achieving the goals of OpenRaw, which is TRUE OPENNESS, Again, Adobe is trying to get manufacturers to PAY LICENSING so they use a PROPRIETARY FORMAT that will HOLD CUSTOMERS on a PAID platform. OpenRaw is he answer for a true competitive environment.
Ask yourself why other manufacturers don't use a documented backwards-compatible format.
    - Easy, because they are lazy and want kick-back. The SAME answer that I (and the entire OS community) would give if you asked about Acrobat or MS Office.
If you use a particular piece of software as your main tool, and you buy a camera which isn't yet supported by it, it's your problem. There is an expression used in the industry:
"Poor Planning on your part does not constitute an Emergency on my part."
    - I agree here, it's MY PROBLEM that I decided to have a better product, it was my choice. I can still use OS Tools, which will be what I do moving forward, and about that expression, that is EXACTLY why Adobe will keep loosing customers, because the sense of urgency to help who pays their bills is inexistent. You are correct, why should they rush something so simple to help a customer right? Screw the customer... Thanks for making my point...

  • Have Nikon 1J1 and want to open file in Raw?

I have Nikon 1J1 and I took pictures in Raw. When I went open file from my Adobe Elements 9 it said it cant open this file. Can someone tell he why and how to fix this? Do I need an update?

The only update you could do is updating to pse 10.
You could however use the 7.1 DNG Converter to convert your raw files to dng copies which will then open in pse 9.

  • LR4 White Balance Numbers Differ w/ Nikon D4 and D3s

I've noticed that LR interprets the white balance settings differently for my raw .nef files coming from my Nikon D3s and D4 bodies; even when a specific kelvin temp is chosen in camera.
    Here's a few examples:
D4 flash WB, LR shows as 6150, +2
D3s flash WB, LR shows as 6400, +9
D4 WB set to 5k, LR reads as 4750, +1
D3s WB set to 5k, LR reads as 4900, +10
Any thoughts on why this is happening, and what (if anything) I should do to get xxxx kelvin temp in camera to import as xxxx kelvin temp in LR?

Eric Chan, senior designer of LR/ACR wrote:
    Quote:
The white balance readout in terms of temperature & tint depends on the camera profile (more specifically, the translation between so-called "camera neutral" values and temperature/tint values). Different raw converters use different profiles. This results in different readouts, even if image appearance is the same.
The process of reporting white balance values is non-standardized.
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com/fo...2#msg411522%29
Raw converters, whether in the camera or in a computer, do not deal with color temperatures, they deal with multipliers applied to the red and blue channels. But because representing a WB as a pair of multiplier values would be mystifying for most users, the GUI translates those numbers into the corresponding color temperature that the WB will neutralize, a concept more familiar to most photograhers. When "As Shot" is set in the converter it reads from the image file metadata the mutipliers listed there and applies them. However, the WB multipliers are applied after the camera profile and since different converters use different profiles with differing renderings of the basic color values, the post-WB image values are different, even though the same multipliers are used, and the corresponding Kelvin temperature is different.
Now, what happens when you dial a temperature into your camera? The firmware calculates what multipliers will be needed in combination with the Nikon profile in order to neutralize light of that color. Then it records the multipliers in the metadata and, if outputting a jpg, applies them. But if you output a Raw, LR reads the multipliers and does the reverse calculation, "What temperature will be neutralized if these multipliers are used with an Adobe profile?" and does not come back to the same temperature that you set in the camera.
Different cameras = different profiles = different temperatures.
