Nikon D300, Just got it.

I'm posting this in case any of you are considering a purchase of a D300.
I've only done practice shots under different lighting conditions around my home. Checking out performance at various ISO's and so-forth. Well, I've got to say that I'm really impressed.
Please keep in mind that I'm not really at ease with it yet because there are sooo many settings available and the manual is 400+ pages. I don't know that I have it set to the "best" settings.
This is what I think so far.
The monitor is truly great. Compared to other monitors it is like going from a 20" regular TV to a 42" high definition. It is sharp and bright. You can zoom in on preview and see sharpness of small details,
Noise at higher ISO's is very well controlled. I did a few shots at ISO 800 and I think they look at least as good as, the best 400 speed film. Did a couple prints without any Photoshop noise reduction and base my opinion on those prints. Did a shot in a dimly lit room at ISO 3200. It was noisy but a couple minutes in Photoshop did miracles. I have no plugins for noise, just use CS.
Focus is very fast and accurate. Even in dim light and without the built-in AF assist light.
Color is very accurate.
Dynamic range (with special settings) is fairly good, for digital. There is a setting (adjustable) for getting better shadow details while not blowing out the highlights. I think this does a pretty good job.
I took one image (ISO 200) and enlarged to 20 X 30. Sharpened slightly and increased contrast a little in Photoshop. Cropped section to 8x10 and printed it on Epson R1800. It left nothing to be desired, a really nice print.
My thoughts are based on my experience. I've shot a lot using Fuji 12 meg cameras, not my own. My own cameras have been Nikon D70's. They have served my well in my wedding and portrait work. Before going digital I used only 35mm. I'm not comparing this to medium or large format. I also am not comparing to any other brand. I only shoot in manual mode.
My cameras are not better than your cameras
My photography is not better than your photography
I'm not a better person than you
Peace,
Q

LRK,
Hello to you also. How is the wedding photography going? Good, I hope. Nice to hear from you and thank you.
Lawrence,
I am comparing to My D70. I don't have enough knowledge as to other brands to make a judgment. One report (who can believe reports?) says that it compares favorably with the Fuji. In some circles the Fuji is considered the best digital for weddings because it has a fairly wide dynamic range, again for digital.
When I shoot I rely on the "high-lights" flashing in the monitor. I then check the levels, if I need to. This is just faster for me in the heat of battle. I did a snapshot of my neighbor yesterday. On the monitor it indicated that the part of his home (light tan) in the sunlight was in the white range. I opened the photo in Photoshop and it was clearly tan, with reasonable detail. Not as good as film but very good. A great improvement I think.
Nick,
Thank you so much. Yes going from D70 is an improvement. At the same time, I have to say that I really appreciate that the D70 came out when it did. It made my switching from film affordable. In my opinion, if you were able to get a good price for your D200 it possibly would make sense to get the D300. But I sure would not make the change if it meant a big financial loss. Some things aren't practical no matter how much we want the latest and greatest. I'm sure I'm not telling you something you don't know.
Ramona Dear,
Here I'm all happy about my new D300 and you come in here and say you want a D3 as a BACKUP! I hate you Not really, just kidding. I do have to ask what it would be a backup to? Again, just kidding about the "hate you" comment.
Peace,
Q

Thanks to Bobthefisherman & Turbostar.  Turns out I've got a corrupted disk (which I found out via "verify disk" on Disk Utility First Aid.  Previously, I never thought to verify disk -- only to repair permissions -- so I never knew my HD had been corrupted.
Wasn't able to do a clean install of OSX10.6 because my SuperDrive only sporadically will load discs, so I am taking it to the Apple Store to see if they can do a clean install, and depending upon costs, get the Superdrive replaced.
The HD wasn't partioned by the way.  And I did have just over 40GB of contiguous space.
    Thanks again.

The D610 didn't get out-of-the-box RAW support until Photoshop CC.
You can either upgrade to CC or use the DNG Converter to convert and open your DNGs in CS5.

    Thank you for your response.
I have loaded directly into Lightroom using import and via Nikon Capture NX2. RAW files display fine in Capture.
In Lightroom, blank previews are created for each available image, with the message "Preview unavailable for this file."

  • Using Aperture with an external Hard Drive and my new camera (Nikon D300s)

I have an older MacBook pro- basically had option upgrade comp or camera- went with the new Nikon D300s... my pro was maxed out so a friend helped me transfer my library to my external Harddrive (had a tra- after transfer of my library looking at only 721mb left (just a few photos)) but here is the issue- we have it set up when i load my cards that they go right to the external- but two things happen- my raw photos show as 'unsupported format' AND I can't figure out how to edit.... seriously so frustrated I am ready to go with a micro-puker computer and photoshop... this is NUTS! any help... o and I run AP 2 and I ain't dumping any more money in apple until they can show me they are working again... this is eating my profits!

Well... I am going to say I am not ashamed to admit that I am not 100% sure. I basically gave my computer to my friend who is a computer guru as I was trying to download my first shoot with my new camera and I got a "not enough memory" message- and kinda freaked out.
I have a WD external HD so it is mac friendly-
I don't know how he moved it-- I know he said when he set it up to transfer it took close to 14 hours as it is USB (I know I can and should get a firewire port for it) - and to be truthful I don't know if it is referenced or managed. I know that I plug in the external and make sure it shows in on my computer then plug in my card reader and when i plug in my CF card... aperture opens and I set up a new project and it saves to the hard drive... yet is still showing on my aperture lib- so I am confused... and of course my "free" apple care ran out 6 months ago so I can't just call them or drive to denver and have them show me the solution... and I need one as I have a HUGE photo job in like 4 days

  • How can i import raw files into iphoto from my Nikon D300?

Just got a Nikon D300, and it will import jpg and tff, but not raw (nef) files-i prefer iphoto to their software- Nikon says to try talking to apple to find a way to do it- does anyone know any info that can help? I need to decide if I am keeping the camera-from other posts it doesn't look like buying aperture will help either- thanks.

I would not ditch a camera because of this! If you like the camera, there will always be a way to import Canikon RAW files, though you may need to do some upgrading, and it may take some time for Apple to support a new camera.

  • Nikon D300 RAW NEF files not recognized  ???

I just got a new Nikon D300. I Have been using a Nikon D80 shooting RAW with no problems. I cannot get iPhoto or Aperture to recognize any RAW files. RAW+jpeg results in the jpeg files being imported by not the RAW files.
All software is the newest version, iPhoto08 v 7.1.1 and Aperture 1.5.6 Here is the error message I get in iPhoto
    Unreadabel Files:
    /private/var/folders/1s/1suEP7hYGu15kLLAa5I2+++TI/-Tmp-/iPhoto/DSC_0075.NEF
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Steve

I just pickup a D300 and unfortunately Aperture nor iPhoto will not import the picture in the RAW format. Do you know if the RAW format will be updated in the new OS release that is to be announced?
I also contacted Nikon about the Capture NX program that came with the camera and Nikon told me that they are working with Apple to resolve the issues with there program as well.
It would be nice if the Camera venders would work with Apple before introduction to make sure the software is available to support the hardware they introduce..
    Best Regards,

  • Nikon D300 RAW and PSE 5.0 (Win)

I have just started to process my Nikon D300 RAW images in my ACR / PSE 5.0 (Win) installation.  The RAW conversion works OK but when I want to remove the actual RAW files from my computer to store elsewhere, the computer will not let me move or delete them because "they are being used by another program or person."
I have also noticed other strange goings on with these RAW files sometimes causing PSE to freeze.
A quick check with the Process Explorer diagnostic tool from Microsoft indicates that something called Photoshop Elements File Agent.exe is still running in the background.  Is this a problem of the RAW files themselves or PSE?  Has any other user met this?  I have backed up "My Catalog", restarted my computer and uninstalled / reinstalled my PSE 5.0 to no avail.
    Any help gratefully received!

    Hi dj_paige
    1. Sorry but Windows XP (SP3).
    2. My current RAW workflow involves deleting the
NEF RAW files from the PSE Organiser after
conversion, copying / backing up the NEF files to
an external HDD (which works OK) and then moving
    them (via standard Windows Explorer
drag-and-drop) from the "Download" folder to an
"Archive" folder on my computer internal hard
drive.  I got the same error message when I tried
to delete them from the "Download" folder.  My
son, who works in computers, put me onto the
Microsoft "Process Explorer" utility, to try and
find which program was still using the files.
    3. I have had no problems with this workflow with
my previous Nikon D70.  My suspicions about the
D300 RAW files arose when the problem happened
with the first one I tried to move / delete.
    4. The other "strange goings on" relate to trying
to reopen one of the affected D300 NEF RAW files
back into PSE Editor.  My PSE5 installation just
stopped.  Today, after having reinstalled my PSE
software, when trying to import one of the
affected D300 NEF RAW files back into PSE
Organiser, I got an error message relating to
"Memory".  As this is all somewhat vague, I will
try to recreate and note the error messages received.
I look forward to any progress on this matter.
    Kind Regards
    Adrian Law

  • Nikon D300 and chromatic aberration

I've noticed quite pronounced fringing in raw files brought into Lightroom 1.4 from a Nikon D300 and it can't be adequately fixed using the Lens Correction controls.
Creating jpegs in-camera using RAW+jpeg gives jpegs with far better fringe reduction than I can get in Lightroom. It seems that Nikon Capture NX can give the same treatment to NEFs that the camera gives to jpegs, but it's not available in Lightroom.
That benefit is powerful enough to make me consider switching to NX rather than upgrading to Lightroom 2 (which doesn't appear have this feature either).
Alas, I've been allowing Lightroom to convert my NEFs to DNGs, so I imagine I've lost the metadata that NX uses to fix the CA on all my old files.
Has anybody got any useful info on any of this?

Nikon uses a software algorithm in the body and in NX to correct for lateral CA live. It does it for ANY lense you attach to the body. For RAW files, the info is written as metadata in the RAW file, which NX reads and uses as a first guess. Canon does the same in their DPP software. The math that Lightroom does in the lens correction section is the same. It just doesn't automatically determine the right settings. I have over time developed a set of presets that I will apply to files from certain lenses at certain focal lengths and this works OK, but not as good as the automatic fitting of the parameters that NX does. I had asked for something like this in the beta period, but it is probably not very high on the list of priorities. We'll see when and if it materializes. The algorithms to do this are simple (there is no reason to build a database, this is straightforward image processing stuff) but they are patent protected, so Adobe might not go there at all.

  • Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300

Dear All! Lightroom changes colour in my RAW files captured with NIKON D300. Some of the images are completely ruined. I am sure Adobe must be aware of this problem. What could be done? Is there a solution? Many thanks for your help. Regards, Stanislav

You want "something different" but this "something different" is quite hard to define.
I want a result which reflects the result on the camera. Have the feeling the display
of the D800 is not the greatest, at least (not only the color issue which is often discussed)
but also the exposure. Often I think I would need to compensate it, but then afterwards
on the computer the non corrected version looks most of the time better.
I think its interesting to see how allergic people react when the word jpeg comes up.
This is also just a rendered result, just by the camera. There are many options in my cam.
I like the vivid setting with some modifications. And that gives me a result I like.
And if I like the result, why shall I spend way more time to replicate it?
I do not talk about that I would want the jpeg, I only say that what I get color wise out of the
box is how I would like to look at it. I still want the capability to fix for example exposure  in image,
but I want the base the version I got from the jpeg view (or how the Nikon raw software could do).
On Lightroom I did not manage to have a profile that looked as appealing to me.
It also consumes way more time in my workflow to fix all pictures manually and results might differ.
To work on an image you need a starting point, I do not say the jpeg look is always perfect and
what I want all the time, but most of the time it is.
You say yourself you use profiles. So why should there not be a profile which automatically adjusts to the camera settings.
Its so frustrating to see a look which you like (the preview image when the pic is first accessed) and
then Lightroom switches to its own rendering which is flat and which I do not like.
For me its clearly something Adobe and/or Nikon should fix, like the mentioned "auto correct to preview look",
Nikon profiles/settings/raw-details in Lightroom or for example a Nikon import module.

  • Won't sync nikon d300 all of the sudden.

previously I had no problems syncing my nikon d300. suddenly i got messages that I had not disconnected properly (probably true), now the computer won't recognize the camera. please help.

    Jim:
First try launching Image Capture and see if you can import the photos to a folder on the Desktop. If you can then reformat the memory card with the camera, take some test shots and try again.
FWIW, my recommendation is to use a card reader for uploading photos from the camera. It avoids several potential problems that could damage the library, e.g. an early shutdown by the camera due to low battery. It's just a much safer way of handling your photos.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Ap Crashes after connecting camera (Nikon D300) to computer for Tethering..

Using Aperture in a "tethered" photo shoot, I connected a Nikon D300 and it was working fine. I hade to do a battery change on teh camera and when I turned the camera back on Aperture crashed. Restared computer twice, Aperture lauched just fine, BUT afte connecting the Nikon D300 to the computer Aperture was not responding. However I would disconnect the camera and Aperture was fine. Bottom line I had to cancel the Tethered shooting because aperture continued to stall when I connected the camera. Any thought? Please advice.

Something I forgot to mention was that I shot 2,616 pictures yesterday when this happen. It crashed at like picture 2,245. I was shooting models and it was one shot after the other for like 13 hours straight.
However, today I decided to trash some older pictures to make room for part 2 of the shoot this coming weekend. I got home and I tried tethering again and wallah, it worked. I tried another camera as well a D60 and it worked. So can we say that it was a system overload? Would that be a good assumption?
Should I go in to the preferences and dump prefs? Any thoughts on this would be good.
P.s Prior to the deleting of my older stuff I have like 9gigs available in the hard drive, after deleting I had 27 gigs left.. Just a note!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Some Nikon D300 NEF files don't appear in Bridge CS3 (Mac)

    Hi all,
I'm using a Nikon D300 and just upgraded to CS3 on my MAC in no small part because the D300 was not supported by CS2. I am running into a problem though.
I always shoot in both JPEG and RAW modes. When I open Bridge I always see each JPEG version of a shot.
However, only about 50% of the time can I see the NEF (RAW) version of the thumbnail. The rest of the time I only see a generic "RAW" thumbnail with no image. This sporadic NEF viewability carries over to the preview pane when I select such a NEF file.
Furthermore, Camera Raw cannot open the NEF files that are not visible in Bridge. When I try opening them I get a message saying "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this file type."
I have tried purging the Cache (through Tools) as some indicated in other forums threads but this has not helped. I have also downloaded the ACR 4.4 plugin and installed it in the correct library location.
Has anyone else experienced this (whether on a Nikon or other camera)? Any advice?
    Thanks

I've finally solved the problem with having only some of my NikonD300 NEF files viewable in Bridge/readable by Photoshop! Jon Michael Riley had said he was having similar problems so I wanted to make sure he and anyone else has the info on what worked for me.
The issue does not have anything to do with purging the thumbnail cache or installing the latest version of Camera RAW 4.4.1. While they were good suggestions (offered by Adobe's Technical support people also), they do not resolve this particular issue.
I read that an earlier version of what Jon described as "Nikon's clunky software" had corruption issues when images were first transfered from the camera via Nikon PictureProject Transfer. It looks like the latest incarnation has the same issues. Nikon products can see the transfered images without a problem. HOWEVER, Adobe Bridge/Photoshop cannot rectify the corruption issue caused by transferring photos using Nikon's utility.
So here's the solution: DO NOT use Nikon PictureProject Transfer! It is a piece of garbage! Instead, make ADOBE PHOTO DOWNLOADER the default tool to transfer images from the camera. To make it default do the following:
Open Bridge, pull down the Bridge CS3 Preferences. Select the "General" preferences set. On this screen you will see "Behavior". The first clickable box reads "When a camera is connected launch Adobe Photo Downloader". Select this box to render this the default transfer tool.
If you still have the pictures on your memory cards you can re-transfer them using Adobe Photo Downloader. All your NEF files should now be readable by Bridge/Photoshop. I've told Adobe Tech Support about this problem with Nikon's software. Hopefully they'll be able to check this as an option if others call in with similar problems.
Unfortunately I have not figured out how to repair the corruption in the files I transfered earlier using Nikon's piece of garbage software. Since I don't have the images on memory cards anymore I can't just re-transfer them. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to do this? Will I ever be able to access my earlier NEF shots?
    Cheers,
    Greg
Thanks to everyone for trying to help resolve these issues.

  • Nikon D300s RAW - cannot open

I just got the new D300S ("s" is significant) and can not open raw files in PSE taken with the new camera. The D300s was just released September 2009 (this month). My old camera, D70 continues to work fine.
I updated to latest RAW driver - ver 5.4, but no luck.
Adobe site does not yet list D300s as a supported camera, so I assume that I am dead in the water until they add it?
    (I am a Windows user)
(The camera came with a RAW viewer for Windows - I take it that this is just a viewer, which is no help for Photoshop Elements?)
A simple straight-forward answer would be appreciated.

    dj_paige:
Wow! That looked like the perfect solution. But it won't install (Adobe message, not from Windows). Won't tell me why it won't install either.
Perhaps because I am not using the full Photoshop, but Photoshop Elements?
(The driver said it 64-bit, but I have 64-bit Windows Vista, so don't think that is the problem).
(The driver also appeared to be pre-release. Perhaps the install program does not yet support all versions - send it out to the pros first.)
Thanks, though. I thought we had it!
