Nikon D300 NR question

The camera came with Long Exposure NR and High ISO NR turned off by default. Apart from the shooting delays, is there any qualitative advantage to shooting raw with either or both of these settings turned on, if always planning to do post NR in Lightroom or CS3 (Adobe products thrown in to make it relevant here :-) )?

Long exposure NR is very useful and will be far better than doing noise reduction in post. It works by doing an extra dark frame with the shutter closed after your actual exposure and substracting this from the first real exposure. So it actually impacts the RAW data. This is very effective, but doubles the time it takes to take an image. High ISO NR probably has no effect on the RAW data, but only on jpegs, so you should probably not bother with it if you shoot RAW.

  • Nikon D300 Camera Raw 4.6 Question

    Hello All,
I have Photoshop CS3 and am using a Nikon D300 camera.  I've downloaded and installed the 4.6 version of the Camera Raw plug-in, but it doesn't seem to allow me to open my raw files in 16-bit; i.e., the only option is creating an 8-bit file.  I just installed the DNG converter and took a shot at opening one of the DNG files, but, once again, the plug-in will only create an 8-bit version.  Nikon's Capture NX seems to be the only way I can make my adjustments to my raw file and open the image in Photoshop as a 16-bit file.
Am I missing something here or are Camera Raw 4.6 and Photoshop CS3 limited in their ability to handle Nikon D300 raw files?
Thank you so much for your advice!
    Liz

Please click on the workflow options text link (usually in blue) at the bottom of the CR dialog box. It says 8-bit down there. It will bring up a dialog box. You can then change the output bit depth to 16 bits.

  • Viewing Raw files (.NEF) from Nikon D300 in Preview (OS X 10.4.11)

    Hi,
I can't view Raw (.NEF) files from my new Nikon D300 dSLR in Preview. I can view the ones from my older D70. I put this question on a photography forum, and the problem seems to be with the OS. The D300 and D3 are new and popular cameras. I have no other particular reason to upgrade to 10.5 yet - is there likely to be an upgrade to 10.4, or Preview, or a plug-in or something, that will solve this? (BTW I have no problem opening these files in Lightroom, but I like to use Preview to browse).
    Richard

    Richard,
Did you ever find a way around this? I am in the same boat. I use CS3 and Lightroom to view and edit the D3 raw images but would like to be able to preview them quickly with Preview or Photo Reviewer software which depends on the OS raw converter support.
The newest OS update available on March 20 still doesn't fix the problem. Maybe Apple will offer another update soon??

  • Nikon D300s, Best settings in FCP

I've just begun shooting video on a D300s, my results in FCP have been less than desirable. Specifically my HD Video is either very soft or pixilated. I am assuming that perhaps there are some settings I need to address in the program. My question is what should I check?

    1. Compressor (slower, perhaps better) or MPEG Streamclip (faster).
    2. Whatever matches the format you convert to. What to convert to? Can't tell you without knowing the exact specs of what the original media is.
This is the Nikon D300 tech spec page
    http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product-Archive/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25432 /D300.html#tab-ProductDetail.ProductTabs.TechSpecs
This is supposed to represent the cameras capabilities. As far as video goes it's complete and utter garbage. The only video references are NTSC and PAL. What does this tell me? It tells me that if I want to shoot video I shouldn't be using a camera from this company. I should get myself a video camera that shoots a standard, professional video format. Frankly whoever's responsible for this page at Nikon should be fired.

  • Using Aperture with an external Hard Drive and my new camera (Nikon D300s)

I have an older MacBook pro- basically had option upgrade comp or camera- went with the new Nikon D300s... my pro was maxed out so a friend helped me transfer my library to my external Harddrive (had a tra- after transfer of my library looking at only 721mb left (just a few photos)) but here is the issue- we have it set up when i load my cards that they go right to the external- but two things happen- my raw photos show as 'unsupported format' AND I can't figure out how to edit.... seriously so frustrated I am ready to go with a micro-puker computer and photoshop... this is NUTS! any help... o and I run AP 2 and I ain't dumping any more money in apple until they can show me they are working again... this is eating my profits!

Well... I am going to say I am not ashamed to admit that I am not 100% sure. I basically gave my computer to my friend who is a computer guru as I was trying to download my first shoot with my new camera and I got a "not enough memory" message- and kinda freaked out.
I have a WD external HD so it is mac friendly-
I don't know how he moved it-- I know he said when he set it up to transfer it took close to 14 hours as it is USB (I know I can and should get a firewire port for it) - and to be truthful I don't know if it is referenced or managed. I know that I plug in the external and make sure it shows in on my computer then plug in my card reader and when i plug in my CF card... aperture opens and I set up a new project and it saves to the hard drive... yet is still showing on my aperture lib- so I am confused... and of course my "free" apple care ran out 6 months ago so I can't just call them or drive to denver and have them show me the solution... and I need one as I have a HUGE photo job in like 4 days

  • Some Nikon D300 NEF files don't appear in Bridge CS3 (Mac)

    Hi all,
I'm using a Nikon D300 and just upgraded to CS3 on my MAC in no small part because the D300 was not supported by CS2. I am running into a problem though.
I always shoot in both JPEG and RAW modes. When I open Bridge I always see each JPEG version of a shot.
However, only about 50% of the time can I see the NEF (RAW) version of the thumbnail. The rest of the time I only see a generic "RAW" thumbnail with no image. This sporadic NEF viewability carries over to the preview pane when I select such a NEF file.
Furthermore, Camera Raw cannot open the NEF files that are not visible in Bridge. When I try opening them I get a message saying "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this file type."
I have tried purging the Cache (through Tools) as some indicated in other forums threads but this has not helped. I have also downloaded the ACR 4.4 plugin and installed it in the correct library location.
Has anyone else experienced this (whether on a Nikon or other camera)? Any advice?
    Thanks

I've finally solved the problem with having only some of my NikonD300 NEF files viewable in Bridge/readable by Photoshop! Jon Michael Riley had said he was having similar problems so I wanted to make sure he and anyone else has the info on what worked for me.
The issue does not have anything to do with purging the thumbnail cache or installing the latest version of Camera RAW 4.4.1. While they were good suggestions (offered by Adobe's Technical support people also), they do not resolve this particular issue.
I read that an earlier version of what Jon described as "Nikon's clunky software" had corruption issues when images were first transfered from the camera via Nikon PictureProject Transfer. It looks like the latest incarnation has the same issues. Nikon products can see the transfered images without a problem. HOWEVER, Adobe Bridge/Photoshop cannot rectify the corruption issue caused by transferring photos using Nikon's utility.
So here's the solution: DO NOT use Nikon PictureProject Transfer! It is a piece of garbage! Instead, make ADOBE PHOTO DOWNLOADER the default tool to transfer images from the camera. To make it default do the following:
Open Bridge, pull down the Bridge CS3 Preferences. Select the "General" preferences set. On this screen you will see "Behavior". The first clickable box reads "When a camera is connected launch Adobe Photo Downloader". Select this box to render this the default transfer tool.
If you still have the pictures on your memory cards you can re-transfer them using Adobe Photo Downloader. All your NEF files should now be readable by Bridge/Photoshop. I've told Adobe Tech Support about this problem with Nikon's software. Hopefully they'll be able to check this as an option if others call in with similar problems.
Unfortunately I have not figured out how to repair the corruption in the files I transfered earlier using Nikon's piece of garbage software. Since I don't have the images on memory cards anymore I can't just re-transfer them. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to do this? Will I ever be able to access my earlier NEF shots?
    Cheers,
    Greg
Thanks to everyone for trying to help resolve these issues.

  • Photoshop CS3 and Nikon D300s = BUYER BEWARE

I recently purchased a Nikon D300s and noticed an error message when I try to open RAW files in Photoshop CS3. I checked for an upgrade to the Camera Raw plugin and guess what? The upgrade that includes the D300s is only available for Photoshop CS4.
I called Adobe and they confirmed not only that I have to upgrade Photoshop but that because I purchased the Adobe Creative Suite, I have to upgrade the ENTIRE suite and CANNOT upgrade just Photoshop.
I'm not a programmer but it seems to me that when they upgrade Camera Raw (which they've done several times in CS3) all they do is add support for new cameras. I doubt there is so much programming being done that this pluging update cannot be supported by CS3. It's a complete rip off.

I doubt there is so much programming being done that this pluging update cannot be supported by CS3.
Oh, so the engine from 2010 Prius can be fitted into your 73 pinto without any problems?
    Yeah, it's sorta like that.

  • Bridge 2.1.1.9 problems with Nikon D300 NEF files

I am getting a few Raw files from my Nikon D300 that will appear properly in Bridge, but the majority either don't show a preview at all or are very pixelated in appearance. The ones that do appear fine can be opened in ACR by right clicking and selecting "open in camera raw". However, the others that don't appear properly don't even show the option to open in camera raw. Yet the files are okay, because I can then open them from within Photoshop and process the files like that. The other odd behavior is that if I right click the thumbnail and rename the file then the thumbnail preview suddenly appears properly. Lastly, the pixel dimensions show incorrectly until the file is renamed.
I am using Windows XP SP2 with Photoshop CS3. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This has been very frustrating because initially it appears that the file may be corrupt.
    Thanks!

This might not be helpful as I do not know why but .. I have a D300, and while Bridge is its usual flakey self, it has worked fine with the file formats. I tried all the combinations of compression and 12/14 bit and bridge sees them.
I do have cache weirdness, where it seems to reprocess them repeatedly, as though it is forgetful, but it does process and resolve them.
I've experimented with the "high quality previews" on and off, and when off the quality is definitely lower. Secondly if it is processing (or reprocessing) its cache, I see weirdness in the display where it may not display the quality preview either for a very long time, or not at all. But generally I've had no luck getting bridge to be usable while it processes its cache for a directory, I just let it finish and then use it.
However none of these flaky issues have been D300 specific, and been using it for a couple months now, and also with a D80 from my wife, no difference.

  • Unable to open Nikon D300 Raw in CS2. Why? How fix?

I use Photoshop CS2, latest Vers. (9.0.2) and I have the Adobe Camera Raw latest update for CS2, vers. 3.7, installed, and confirmed via the help menu that it IS installed. I use Windows XP professional 5.1 serv. pack 2. Camera is a Nikon D300 which shoots RAW as well as JPG. I am unable to open camera raw ("NEF") photos. Get a message, "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."
I have no clue why PS won't open the NEF. The only thing close on Adobe's help documents suggests that if I've installed Nikon's own Capture software, it could interfere. But I HAVE NOT installed that software, and have held off for exactly this reason to avoid any possible conflicts.
I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. Right now I'm frustrated beyond words both by the problem and by Adobe's online 'help.'

The Nikon D300 was introduced after the latest (and last) ACR plug-in for CS2.
A workaround is: download the latest DNG converter, convert yor NEF's to DNG format.
    This universal DNG format
can be read by ACR 3.7.
    Hope this helps,
    Rob

  • Error opening New Nikon D300 RAW files on Iphoto and Preview

    hi,
I've a new Nikon D300 and I've had problems when i try to import the RAW (.NEF) photos to my iphoto... it says that the file is unreadable either on Iphoto or Preview or even on Apple Aperture. How can i solve this problem? is there any update that i can do for that or Apple didn't upgrade the iPhoto yet? I l know the camera can take 14-bit Raw format photos but i'm not sure if it is taking them in 12-bit because it can take both. I have a Nikon D200 too and i've never had any problem uploading my Raw photos to iphoto. the only program that opens the photos yet is Photoshop CS3.
    hope, someone can help me.
    Many Thanks:
    Gonçalo Rendeiro

hope this 10.5.2 solved the problem

  • Cant open RAW files from Nikon D300S

I have a Nikon D300S.  I can't open RAW files in Adobe CS4.  Screen message is 'Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document'.  I understood from this Adobe website that the fix was to download Camera Raw 5_5.  I've done that and the same screen message appears.  What am I doing wrong / what do I need to do to fix the problem.   If you can list a step by step process in the plainest terms possible then that would be appreciated.  Thanks

Firstly thanks to all who are trying to assist.  I appreciate your spending time on this.   Hopefully this additional info will help:
    (1) the camera is a Nikon D300s.  I'm not aware of any model details beyond this   It was bought c9 months ago.
    (2) I bought Adobe CS4 before buying the Nikon D300s.   I've used CS4 to convert RAW files from my other cameras - a Nikon D2H and a Minolta Dimage - without any bother at all.
    (3) CS4 is loaded onto my Windows based PC in to the Windows 'Downloads' folder.  I'm not using any Mac computers.
    (4) The procedure I followed to upload the Adobe files was:
    (a)  I clicked 'Help' - About Plug-in - Camera Raw.  Info on screen says 'Version 5.0.0.178
    (b)  In looking at the Adobe support web pages (I can't now find which one it was) it indidated I should check for updates.  I downloaded and saved  Photoshop_11.0.2_mul_AdobeUpdate.  Its filed in my 'Downloads' folder in Windows.
    (c) I used the Adobe search engine using an enquiry "CS4 Camera Raw Updates'.  This produced a page with box at the top and 2 headings 'Digital camera raw file support' and 'Adobe camera raw and DNG convertor downloads'.  Under this second heading there are choices to click for Widows and Mac OS.  I selected Windows.  The result produces a list of Updates / Programmes.   I selected Adobe DNG Convertor 5.5 update and Camera Raw 5.5 update and downloaded both into my Windows 'Downloads' folder.  I chose these because according to the list info they were relevanf for the Nikon D300s.  I attempted to open a photo taken from the D300s in Raw and the photo would not open - the usual '......not the right document' message.
    (d) from Forum contributions I then deleted version 5.5 of both files downloaded at (c) above and installed version 5.7 and then tried to view the Raw image again, Same result.  This is the up to date position as at this post.
Have I missed a step somewhere? eg should there be a step forcing a link from the downloaded updates to CS4 or do the downloads automatically link to CS4 when the download is complete?
Any furhter help you can offer is appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Aperture 3 tethered with Nikon D300 trouble

I've been having trouble shooting tethered with Aperture 3 and the Nikon D300. It works for a few shots then it jams with the spinning wheel until i have to force quit. Also the inspector column gets messed up with type over type. I'm assuming apple will issue an update for this but i'm not very impressed. I have been using Capture one, trial version in the meantime to get by until a fix arrives and it has been working fine. Nice fast captures and no BS. <Edited By Host>

I gave up with shooting tethered in Aperture 3. I now use Capture one 5 Pro from phase one. I use Aperture for the image adjustment because i like the built in retouch tools and the image management (although my search does not work in Aperture 3, waiting for an update). I'm not impressed with Apple software right now.
Capture one works flawless tethered, the fastest importing i've ever had and didn't take long to get used to the focus tools etc. Try the 30 day free trial and you'll see. When I'm done a shooting session, i just drag the capture folder (with the NEF files) onto a flash drive and import them into Aperture for adjustment.

  • Viewing Nikon D300 images in finder

Hi, Is there anyone out there using Nikon D300 with Mac Book Pro under OSX 10.5.1?
Can you see the thumbnails? Can you see the NEF, TIFF, or PSD files in Finder?
How do you view your photos?
In Finder, if you click on one single pictures, does it close down your external drive and put you back in a clean desktop?
Is there a fix? Is there a work around?
    Please help.
Yes: it works find in LR and PS, but what about Finder and iphoto / email?

The issue should only occur if you shoot raw. Currently OS X can only display/read certain RAW camera formats. These are OS level, meaning iPhoto, Preview, Mail, Aperture and others are effected. However adobe products are different because they use Adobe Camera RAW.
I would expect JPEGs TIFFs and PSDs, both thumbnails and files, to view fine. RAW files will not view from the D300, but the D200 is supported.
There is no way of knowing when support for the (not-so-)new files will be available. Rumor has it it will be 10.5.2, but only Apple knows that. You can head on over to the Aperture forum and read to see if some have work-arounds.

My updated 1.4.1 Lightroom and 4.4.1 Camera Raw are not reading the raw images from my new Nikon D300.
