Nikon D300s Movie import

I see that in November 2009 members of the forum said that 24fps movie clips would not import into iMovie. Has any thing changed that would allow import from a Nikon D300s (Movie Modes: Movie with sound - HD 1280 x 720/24 fps, VGA 640 x 424/24 fps, QVGA 320 x 216/24 fps) into iMovie 09 (8.0.5(820))? If not then iPhoto?

Load your D300s movie into iPhoto. In iPhoto, double click on the movie icon which will open QuickTime (you need version 10). In QuickTime, choose "Save As" and save the movie in a HD 720p format. Open iMovie and choose "Import..." locate your HD 720p movie file and import the file into iMovie. I hope this will help.

Latest Camera Raw 2.3 + Aperture 2.1.2 + Nikon D300 = broken import?

After installing the latest camera raw update to version 2.3, it seems I can no longer import raw files from my Nikon D300 into Aperture when the D300 is set for USB Mass Storage, which I always used. When trying to do so, the first sign that something is wrong is the "Import" button in the Import dialog that doesn't show the number of selected pictures. It always show "Import All". Then, if I select all pictures or some of them, the Import dialog disappears as usual but then the completed import dialog appears immediately and says that 0 pictures have been imported. When checking the project where I wanted to import, there are indeed no pictures.
I then tried to import in iPhoto and it worked just fine. I reverted to Camera Raw Update 2.1, and had no problem.
I was able to import from the D300 when I set its USB connection to be MTP/PTP but no thumbnails appear in the import dialog, no matter if I shot RAW or RAW+JPEG.
So, anybody else noticed that?

typically photographers carry and shoot with multiple cards and then use card readers to get the photos into aperture
Because Apple screwed up their latest raw bundle? I'd rather not take the card out of my D300.
So, no, I haven't tried an external card reader and don't intend to buy one either.
that's your choice, we're just trying to help u out.
a fw800 card reader will be much faster importing than the camera,
if the camera settings changed at least you'll be able to get your photos into aperture.
btw, i have the same camera as you d300 and i've imported well over 100,000 photos (in the last week) since the last update, without a hitch (Camera Raw 2.3 + Aperture 2.1.2 + Nikon D300)

Lightroom 4.1 - I Cannot import Nikon D300s video / movie files into catalogue - Can you?

Hi,
I can import all of my movie files produced by other cameras into my Lightroom 4.1 catalogue, I have the most recent version of Quicktime installed and obviously as I can import other camera model movies it proves that the basic Lightroom services and processes are working fine.
When I try to import the movie, first on the import module it says 'unable to create preview' and then it states, 'this movie file contains no video frames'.
I had gone back to Lightroom 3.5, but have since realised this version doesn't publish my movie files to flickr if they are >30Mb due to the way the Lightroom 3 Publishing module craps out on memory usage.
I know the D300s records movies using the J-MPEG codec, but I'm not sure if this is a problem with the codecs installed on my machine or whether Lightroom does not support this codec?
Before I waste another few days on trying to resolve the D300s import issue, can anybody else preview and import their Nikon D300s video files into Lightroom 4 or 4.1?

i have issues with some MPG files that can not be imported.
these files are not from nikon cameras but it shows that something is broken in LR 4.1
they worked with LR v3.6.

How can i import raw files into iphoto from my Nikon D300?

Just got a Nikon D300, and it will import jpg and tff, but not raw (nef) files-i prefer iphoto to their software- Nikon says to try talking to apple to find a way to do it- does anyone know any info that can help? I need to decide if I am keeping the camera-from other posts it doesn't look like buying aperture will help either- thanks.

I would not ditch a camera because of this! If you like the camera, there will always be a way to import Canikon RAW files, though you may need to do some upgrading, and it may take some time for Apple to support a new camera.

HELP! Premiere CS5 crashes when importing Nikon D300 avi

Just purchesed CS5. It crashes when importing Nikon D300 avi files (which is why I upgraded from CS4 in the first place.

vista 64 (home premium)
8 GB RAM
Intel quad core CPU 2.66 ghz
array of 720 drives (800gb free)
nvidia 9800 dual monitors
mainconcept codec
workes fine for CS4
system crashes instantly when I select a nikon file to import.

Importing from Device (Nikon D300) Problem

With my Nikon D80, when I "Import from Device" I see thumbnails of all the photos (Nikon RAW .NEF files) available for import to Lightroom and can choose those I want to import.
However, when doing the same procedure from my Nikon D300 I cannot see previews on the Import from Device screen in Lightroom. All I see are rectangles with a cross through them and the filename.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem and how did you solve it?
(If I go ahead and import the .NEF files from the D300, once they are imported there is no problem. They render previews in Lightroom OK. It is just that I cannot see previews in the Import from Device screen and, therefore, can't select which to import and which to ignore.)

Known issue with the OS - use a card reader instead.

Camera import settings (Nikon D300)?

How can my Nikon D300 photos all be imported with adjustments to black, brightness, and contrast? Is this an automatic setting (or something I have done mistakenly)?
I have used LR for many years, 25,000+ pictures, and many cameras. When I started importing pictures from a new Camera (a Nikon D300), I see that the following changes are made to every picture:
Black +5
Brightness +50
Contrast +25
I don't know how this happened. I appear not to have edited the photos (the actual Import photo in the history has this setting). My other cameras do not have this setting. Someone please help!
PS I don't ever recall using the synch setting for anything but I am suspicious that only this might have done that.

Well the Huey is decidedly non-pro, but it still works quite well if you're not super sensitive. If you pay more, you'll get better precision, but I doubt most people will notice, especially if you don't also profile your printer or send out for prints from labs.

Take an image of a white wall using default exposure on your camera. It should come out looking like an 18% grey card after conversion in Lightroom. Anyway, iMac monitors are notorious for being far too bright. They are almost impossible to get to reference luminance. A trick to try if you do not have a calibrator that does display brightness is described here by Eric Chan. You use your camera's light meter for it. You'll see that for the iMac display you're all the way on the bottom of the brightness scale. You do not want to use any LCD monitor at high brightness because they tend to lose detail in the highlights. A good test of that is available here. You should see the differences in most of the patch pairs in the rightmost column. If you don't, your monitor is set too bright.

Aperture refuses to import from Nikon D300

After Yesterdays update Aperture refuse to import RAW files from my Nikon D300 as it did before. I get the message "0 images has been imported...".
I can import to iPhoto and them export to Aperture so the RAW files seems OK.
And I can still import JPEGS from my small Canon IS850 directly to Aperture

I am doubting this has to do with updating to Aperture 2.1.2, but rather might be related to Camera RAW 2.3 -- what version of Camera RAW have you installed?
In the a topic about auto-rotation here, there are confirmed problems with not only auto-rotation, but also recognizing as duplicates any images remaining on the card that have previously been imported. The auto-rotation problem, at least in the Previews, is common to both Aperture and iPhoto 08, so clearly points to CRAW 2.3.
We need to see if your experience might also be related to CRAW 2.3. I am having no problem importing from a card reader with cards used in my D200 and D300 cameras, however, other than those mentioned in that topic.

Nikon D300 RAW and PSE 5.0 (Win)

I have just started to process my Nikon D300 RAW images in my ACR / PSE 5.0 (Win) installation. The RAW conversion works OK but when I want to remove the actual RAW files from my computer to store elsewhere, the computer will not let me move or delete them because "they are being used by another program or person."
I have also noticed other strange goings on with these RAW files sometimes causing PSE to freeze.
A quick check with the Process Explorer diagnostic tool from Microsoft indicates that something called Photoshop Elements File Agent.exe is still running in the background. Is this a problem of the RAW files themselves or PSE? Has any other user met this? I have backed up "My Catalog", restarted my computer and uninstalled / reinstalled my PSE 5.0 to no avail.
Any help gratefully received!

1. Sorry but Windows XP (SP3).
2. My current RAW workflow involves deleting the
NEF RAW files from the PSE Organiser after
conversion, copying / backing up the NEF files to
an external HDD (which works OK) and then moving
them (via standard Windows Explorer
drag-and-drop) from the "Download" folder to an
"Archive" folder on my computer internal hard
drive. I got the same error message when I tried
to delete them from the "Download" folder. My
son, who works in computers, put me onto the
Microsoft "Process Explorer" utility, to try and
find which program was still using the files.
3. I have had no problems with this workflow with
my previous Nikon D70. My suspicions about the
D300 RAW files arose when the problem happened
with the first one I tried to move / delete.
4. The other "strange goings on" relate to trying
to reopen one of the affected D300 NEF RAW files
back into PSE Editor. My PSE5 installation just
stopped. Today, after having reinstalled my PSE
software, when trying to import one of the
affected D300 NEF RAW files back into PSE
Organiser, I got an error message relating to
"Memory". As this is all somewhat vague, I will
try to recreate and note the error messages received.
I look forward to any progress on this matter.

Nikon D7000 .MOV files in Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5

I recently upgraded from Production Premium CS5 to CS5.5. Initially Nikon D7000 .MOV files used in previous CS5 Premiere Pro project would not play well in CS5.5. Now .MOV files do work in both PP and AE CS5.5. Here are the steps I followed. Not recommending you follow my steps exactly, just providing info for those that are interested.
1.       Launch Premiere Pro CS5.5 and open previous PP CS5 project, convert project to CS5.5 and rename project file as not to replace previous CS5 project file.
a.       At this point .MOV files do not play in new project or in AE CS5.5
b.      Close Premiere Pro and After Effect if still running.
2.       Using Adobe Bridge CS5.5, batch rename;
a.       Make copies of original files to new folder location while renaming file extension from .MOV to .mpg
b.      Let Adobe Bridge finish creating all new thumbnail previews.
c.       Leave Bridge running in background.
3.       Launch Premiere Pro CS5.5, let Premiere finish recreating thumbnail previews if needed.
a.       Attempt to preview existing .MOV file in project. It worked for me.
b.      Attempt to play sequence containing .MOV files. It worked for me.
c.       Attempt to play or modify sequence .MOV files in AE CS5.5 via Dynamic Link within Premiere. It worked for me.
d.      Close Premiere Pro project and AE projects if open.
4.       Create new Premiere Pro project and sequence
a.       Import a different Nikon D7000 .MOV file not previously used or renamed.
b.      Attempt to play this newly imported .MOV file. This worked for me as well.
c.       The new, previously un-renamed .MOV file also worked in AE CS5.5 for me.
I will perform additional tests but at the moment Nikon D7000 .MOV files are working for me in CS5.5 after initially performing a batch rename in Bridge CS5.5 from .MOV to .mpg and letting Bridge create preview files. Even .MOV files not renamed now work.

I see 2 post in this thread from Todd that say they are working on a fix and it should be out soon. One is from July, the other from August. It is now Sept 7th and I still see no patches or fixes for any bugs. I spent 400 dollars on an upgrade, but is this upgrade going to be supported?
This is making me rethink upgrading to the .5's in the future.
It is a minor bug to most, but in that sense it should be an easy quick fix. Am I wrong? Is this really a complicated issue?
I apologize if this comes off like a rant, but thats kinda what it is. It is not hard to batch rename files, but its a pain to have to relink all those files in PP.

Error opening New Nikon D300 RAW files on Iphoto and Preview

I've a new Nikon D300 and I've had problems when i try to import the RAW (.NEF) photos to my iphoto... it says that the file is unreadable either on Iphoto or Preview or even on Apple Aperture. How can i solve this problem? is there any update that i can do for that or Apple didn't upgrade the iPhoto yet? I l know the camera can take 14-bit Raw format photos but i'm not sure if it is taking them in 12-bit because it can take both. I have a Nikon D200 too and i've never had any problem uploading my Raw photos to iphoto. the only program that opens the photos yet is Photoshop CS3.

Aperture 3 tethered with Nikon D300 trouble

I've been having trouble shooting tethered with Aperture 3 and the Nikon D300. It works for a few shots then it jams with the spinning wheel until i have to force quit. Also the inspector column gets messed up with type over type. I'm assuming apple will issue an update for this but i'm not very impressed. I have been using Capture one, trial version in the meantime to get by until a fix arrives and it has been working fine. Nice fast captures and no BS. <Edited By Host>

I gave up with shooting tethered in Aperture 3. I now use Capture one 5 Pro from phase one. I use Aperture for the image adjustment because i like the built in retouch tools and the image management (although my search does not work in Aperture 3, waiting for an update). I'm not impressed with Apple software right now.
Capture one works flawless tethered, the fastest importing i've ever had and didn't take long to get used to the focus tools etc. Try the 30 day free trial and you'll see. When I'm done a shooting session, i just drag the capture folder (with the NEF files) onto a flash drive and import them into Aperture for adjustment.

Nikon D300 Raw Images and Lightroom 1.4.1

My updated 1.4.1 Lightroom and 4.4.1 Camera Raw are not reading the raw images from my new Nikon D300. I have read several strings of conversation from other folks who are having this problem, and from what I am reading, my 1.4.1 Lightroom should be recognizing them, but it's not. Any help would be MOST appreciated.

Nikon D300 RAW NEF files not recognized ???

I just got a new Nikon D300. I Have been using a Nikon D80 shooting RAW with no problems. I cannot get iPhoto or Aperture to recognize any RAW files. RAW+jpeg results in the jpeg files being imported by not the RAW files.
All software is the newest version, iPhoto08 v 7.1.1 and Aperture 1.5.6 Here is the error message I get in iPhoto
Unreadabel Files:
/private/var/folders/1s/1suEP7hYGu15kLLAa5I2+++TI/-Tmp-/iPhoto/DSC_0075.NEF
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just pickup a D300 and unfortunately Aperture nor iPhoto will not import the picture in the RAW format. Do you know if the RAW format will be updated in the new OS release that is to be announced?
I also contacted Nikon about the Capture NX program that came with the camera and Nikon told me that they are working with Apple to resolve the issues with there program as well.
It would be nice if the Camera venders would work with Apple before introduction to make sure the software is available to support the hardware they introduce..

NEF File Preview not available w Nikon D300

Using Lightroom 1.3, when I attach the Nikon D300, 12 or 14 bit file, the NEF and jpg files do import successfully, but only the jpg files show in preview. The NEF previews are grayed out. Sorry if this topic is addressed. I cannot find anyone with a similar problem

Are you importing directly from camera? For some reason on windows, you will not get previews when importing directly from camera using certain camera models. You should see them if you use a card reader or first copy them to your harddisk manually.
