Nikon D3s + PrPro-CS4 w/ Vista64 Newbie Help?

I know, a D3s is not a real video camera...
I sure could use a few pointers to at least get started with just getting the video to display properly in PrProCS4, if someone has the time to offer some help?
I can open/ edit/ save the AVI file that the D3s creates with Premiere Elements v7, no problem. But when I open the same video in PremierePro CS4 I hear the audio, but the video does not move.
I'll soon be watching the Lynda Learning Premiere Pro videos (haven't started my free 30 day trial). But is there something specific I need to know just to get started with editing D3s video with PProCS4?
My System: P4-PC Quad 2.5GHz, 8GB RAM, Vista64, 2x WD 300GB 10k VelociRaptor Drives w/60GB free on the scratch. Works flawlessly with Photoshop CS4(64) and all' openGL' stuff works there.
Here's where I am now:
1) In the New Project I selected DV and HDV (tried both). The D3s manual states: 1280 x 720 pixels HD @ 24fps.
2) I used the DV-24P Widescreen 32kHz sequence preset (D3s built-in audio is only 11-12bit audio)
I then double-clicked on a clip in the media browser and it appeared in the Source window with the 1st frame of the video displayed. So far so good :-)  I then pressed the 'play' button below it and nothing moves in the video.
So that’s where I'm stuck. Could someone please help point me in the right direction :-)
Thanks for any help to just get started..
Russell

The video is now displayng properly .... hooray!! :-)
Here's my current settings:
New Sequence
Sequence name : Sequence01
General:
Editing Mode: DV 24p
Timebase: 23.976 Fps
Pixel Aspect: D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)
Display Format: 24fps Timecode
Audio
Sample Rate: 44100 Hz
Display: Audio Samples
Video Previews
Preview File Format: Microsoft AVI DV NTSC
Codec: (Grayed out)
Both 'Max Bit Depth' and 'Max Render Quality' are unchecked
I just installed the MainConcept MJPG Codec but have not re-booted. It would appear from the above that I'm currently using "Microsoft AVI DV NTSC" which has the options and the codec button grayed out. The preview image looks fine though.
So far, do the settings above appear appropriate considering the format info that GSpot provided?
Thanks

Have you installed the latest Camera Raw update?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4680
New camera models are added to Camera Raw from time to time, and the Camera Raw 5.x series goes with Photoshop CS4.
The list of supported cameras for the very latest CS5 Camera Raw 6.x plugin is here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
The equivalent list for 5.x is in the ReadMe pdf file for installation.  I believe your D3s camera is supported by 5.7.
At some point it may be that Adobe ceases to make the older versions of Camera Raw suppoort new cameras, at which point you'll either have to do an additional conversion to .dng then open with the older Camera Raw, or update to the latest version of Photoshop.
Hope this helps clear things up for you.

  • PSE8 opening raw images for Nikon D3s

I have downloaded a trial version of PSE8, which is supposed to open raw images from my Nikon D3s.  If the 5.6 update is installed, you are supposed to be able to open raw images from my camera.  However, I can't open any raw images.  Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Adobe does not offer phone support for trial versions. I have tried online support but have received no response to date.  I wanted to test "Opening Raw" before I decided to purchase PSE8.

Make sure you have the correct version of ACR as the D3S is a recent model only supported by ACR5.6. Some of the Adobe links for ACR have been found to be for earlier versions.
You can easily confirm what version you have by opening the Editor (Full Edit) in PSE8.
Click on: Help > About plug-in > Camera Raw
You should see a screen confirming what version you have - just like the attachment.
If you don't have version 5.6.0.148 download the plug-in again using one of the links below.

  • Lightroom 2 won't import Nikon D3s files

I work with Photoshop CS4 and have upgraded the camera RAW to v5.7 in order that Nikon D3s files can be used,  but Lightroom 2 doesn't seem to be able to import these NEF files.  Where can I update Camera Raw in Lightroom and how do I do this exactly?
    Thank you

    Thanks; I ordered the upgrade.

  • PrPro CS4 imported avi squeezed to 4:3

    Hello all,
I am new to this forum and a very casual user of PrPro so bear with me.
I am a camera operator on movies and TV shows and am trying to collect clips of work via the internet and edit them in Premiere Pro. I currently have footage in a variety of formats including VOB, MKV and  Xvid AVI and am using River Past Video Cleaner to convert them to AVI. The file is being converted to AVI and I have tried a variety of codecs including DV, Cinepak and others but it always results in the images being squeezed from 16:9 into a 4:3 frame (black bars on left and right) when viewed in PrPro.
I know this is not the best method and welcome any advice. What tis the best type of file to use in PrPro? Which is the simpleist to convert? Should I not be using PrPro for this at all?
    Thanks for your help,
    Spencer
    PrPro CS4 V4.0

As an aside, you might want to update CS4 to the latest version, CS4.2.1. One of the advantages that it gives will be the Importing of most FLV files, and also the Importing of 100% DVD-compliant (very important) VOB's. I think that both of those came in with CS4.1, but going with the latest will get the full feature-set.
    Good luck,

PS - one frequent contributor here, RoboDog 2, has made some lists of Internet available Assets for testing of various formats/CODEC's. Do not recall a full chart of resources, and they are probably scattered about through multiple, separate threads, but if you look at his Profile, you can likely track down some of those threads. Also, he might drop by (he's about today), and be compelled to do a more formal chart of such resources from his notes.
[Edit] Nevermind. The RoboDog "is in the house." Not sure that he'll appreciate my making extra work for him though...

  • How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

How can I open raw files from my Nikon D7100 in CS4 or CS5?

    Andy,
In the simple and short form, what happens with the ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) module is that it gets updated with regularity, to accommodate the camera mfgr's. changes for their newer models. That ACR works within the host program, such as Ps, PsElements, Lightroom, etc.. At a point, Adobe ceases to support older host program versions. When that happens, the user has a few options:
    Upgrade the host program version
Use another host program, such as PsElements or Lightroom
Use the free DNG converter, per Curt's suggestion. That is not host program dependent
Glad that the DNG Converter works for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Clip Notes Review PrPro CS4

There seems to be a bug in Adobe Reader 9.3 with the new Yellow Message Bar. (Already posted a question in AReader Forum)
My first question is: What video playing programme is used in the PDF created by PrPro CS4?
Second question is: Is anyone else having this problem with the YMB?  (there is a convoluted work-around. Found it after hours of trial and error)

    Colin,
    Thanks for your reply.
I will try your 'fix' next time I use it, simpler than mine.
    My workaround is similar.
First access the PDF, OK the Instruction Dialogue box, Access the Yellow
Bar, Click security to 'remember', Close the PDF but do NOT save. Open the
PDF again, no yellow banner, OK the dialogue box and the play buttons appear
    and all is well.
Now, if the PDF is saved and closed the yellow bar re-appears when the PDF
is next opened. Repeat the process and all will be well again.
So much for Adobe making security simpler and better. I have lodged a bug
    report with them.
Release notes for AReader 9.3 includes the following.
    "Warning Message and Dialog Improvements
A non-intrusive Yellow Message Bar (YMB) that doesn’t block workflows
replaces many of the modal dialogs.
Yelow Message Bar appears when content attempts to invoke potentially risky
behavior such as cross domain access, JavaScript execution, data injection,
and playing legacy multimedia types (non-Flash). If the associated feature
is not locked down by an administrator, the Yellow Message Bar provides an
Options button that offers the user to trust the document “once” or “always”
for that feature. For more information, please click here."

  • Reds in Lightroom 2.6 with Nikon D3s are horrible

Just started using a Nikon D3s and the reds in Lightroom are horrible -- oversaturated and too red.  For example, oranges look red.  The JPEG previews actually look fine so it's something about the RAW program.
I compared to Nikon D3 and D3 has no problems.
Anyone else have this problem?  Is the D3s profile for LR 2.6 messed up?

What immediately strikes me is that the exposure on these 2 images is very different and that your white balance is not the same in both. One of the strange things with Lightroom and ACR is that the rendered hue depends quite strong on the original exposure. Your D3 image is at 1/3s, f8 and the D3s image is at 3/5 and f8, one stop longer. At the same time, the D3s image is darker. Looking at it, that is because they were taken 1 hour apart and the light clearly changed completely judging the shadows from the chair. If you take the jpegs and white balance on the Whibal cards, the reds pull together significantly. It is not surprising that two different cameras judge white balance differently, especially if you shoot the image at different times. You will probably get closer results than me with the jpegs if you start with the RAWs and white balance on the whibal. Then if you also equalize the exposures based on the whibal greycard, you'll find that the reds are closely the same, except for the obvious difference in lighting direction which causes some highlights on the fabric in one image and not so much in the other. There also seems to be a small difference in overall saturation which is par for the course and probably has more to do with the different lighting conditions.
This is really very close for two completely different sensors considering the non-equal testing condition. The differences are on the scale of the difference between two cameras with the same model number! I would redo your test in better controlled lighting conditions and make sure the exposures are equal.
If you want to get closer results, the only way is to shoot a colorchecker and create profiles for both. Otherwise you'll keep subtle differences in color no matter what you do.

  • Nikon D3s RAW files are underexposed by Lightroom / Camera RAW

I'm used to shot RAW files only.
I recently bought a D3s, alongside with my D700 and I noticed D3s files were darker than D700 ones, by about 1/2 or even 2/3 stop. Initially I thought the problem was one of the cameras, but after some tests I found the problem is my RAW converter. Infact this happens only with NEF (RAW) files, and if I shot a RAW+JPG image, the D3s RAW file opened in Lightroom 4 (or Camera RAW) is underexposed if compared with its JPG on-camera version.
I think no camera setting is affecting this behaviour. I reset either the D3s and the D700. No D-Lighting is set on-camera. This happens only with the D3s and only with Camera RAW and Lightroom.
Other RAW converters display the D3s RAW file correctly exposed, the same as its JPG version, and the same as the D700 RAW and JPG. I tested so far Capture One, DxO Pro Optics and Raw Therapee.
Color profile used is custom, but I tried using Adobe Standard and the result is the same.
Default develop settings affect only color profile and sharpening, and I got the same problem on a fresh new installation of Lightroom where no default develop settings are set.
If anybody with a D3s can check if his NEFs are underexposed if compared to their JPG versions when opened in LR or Camera RAW, I would appreciate that much.
Any idea about the origins of my problem would be great.
    Thank you.

I know, DdeGannes, but a different rendition of 2 pro cameras at the same settings is a bit frustrating.
Would it be better to underexpose the D700 while shooting, or setting a default -0,5EV on every imported picture, if the problem goes on?
Moreover, seems the Nikon D3s ISOs need to be pushed +2/3 to obtain the same exposure as the D700 in LR workflow. So the advantage of this great sensor could be lost.
I'd like to know more about D700 and D3s rendition comparison in LR/ACR at same settings.
It's not unusual for two camera bodies of even the same exact make and model to have Exposure differences of up to 1/3 EV, which is very noticeable. Ditto for  White Balance differences. For Example:
Camera 1 is +1/3 EV and Camera 2 is -1/3 EV = 2/3 EV Difference
Camera 1 White Balance is -500KTemp and Camera 2 is +500K Temp = 1000K Difference
Tack on minor differences between the LR Camera Profiles and it will get much worse if heading in opposite directions, as above.
The only way to compare the raw NEF files from two cameras is to use a RAW converter that applies NO profiles, NO Gamma Correction, or any other modifications to the raw pixel data. See may post here for information on 'Rawnalyze:'

    You can download it here:

    Online manual here:
    http://www.oitregor.com/numeric/Rawnalyze/Rawnalyse_doc/datas/RawnalyzeGuide.htm
None of the external links in the manual work, but nothing to worry about. If you have any questions on how to use it let me know.
I believe the Nikon D700, D3, and D3s cameras are supported in Rawnalyze 2.10.4.0. If not you can convert the NEF to DNG.

  • I cannot open Nikon NRW Files in Elements 11. Help please

I cannot open Nikon NRW raw files in Elements 11 Help please

If you're feeling brave* you can try the workaround procedure listed here - http://forums.adobe.com/message/5956711#5956711.
You'll need to use ACR 8.3 RC1. I found it at http://www.freewarefiles.com/downloads_counter.php?programid=24402. ACR 8.3 final won't work with PSE11. Make sure you click the correct download link - 'Direct Download 1' to get the zip file 'cameraraw8-3cs6_r1_win_110713.zip'.
If your system can't open zip files I highly recommend the free 7-Zip (Google it) to do so.
The '1033' file the instructions refer to is in payloads\AdobeCameraRaw7.0All-051113155157\Assets1_1.zip.
    * At your own risk! If any of this is incomprehensible stick with the DNG converter - that's the officially supported method and you'll need to install it anyway to get the profiles installed.

  • Fix corrupted Nikon D3s files in FCPX

Shooting video on a Nikon D3s and there always seems to be one or two corrupted files in each video folder.
Video is there, but the small icon is a QT logo instead of a video thumbnail like all the others. These files cannot be imported.
In the past, the fix was to trim the last frame off the video file using the in-camera editor, save as a new file, then it will work.
Problem is, the cards were re-formatted long ago. Tried simply placing the video file on a card and putting that card in the camera, but the camera sees it as a blank card.
    Is there a way to:
Get these video files back on a card that the camera will recognize, or...
Somehow fix the corrupted files in the computer?

No, they just have the red panes indicating that the projects are not linked to their source media.
After reviewing the White Paper on updating to 10.1 (something I should have done before updating) I think I can update my backup version then move the (hopefully) uncorrupted events over.  In the end, these are old events that I already have edited and published, so it's not that big of a deal.

  • Why won't camera raw v4.6.0 open a Nikon D3s raw file?

I have a new-used Nikon D3s and Photoshop CS3 extended. I am using plug in camera raw version 4.6.0. I can see the raw file in bridge. When I double click the thumbnail photo it goes to a window in Ps that says, "Could not complete your request becasue it is not the right kind of document."
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

You should know that the rendering, capabilities and performance of the current 7.x and 8.x versions of ACR are so far superior to their predecessors, that you will be leaving a lot of image quality on the table if you choose not to upgrade.
Some of us even found ourselves re-converting and re-editing some of our raw files that had been edited in previous versions of ACR, and even re-considering working on some that we had rejected because we deemed the dynamic range to be too extreme to render adequately.
Incidentally, what Bridge is showing you is the JPEG preview embedded in the raw file by the camera, not an ACR-rendition of the raw NEF file, so that has nothing to do  with what the image will look like in ACR one converted.
