Nikon D3s RAW files are underexposed by Lightroom / Camera RAW

I'm used to shot RAW files only.
I recently bought a D3s, alongside with my D700 and I noticed D3s files were darker than D700 ones, by about 1/2 or even 2/3 stop. Initially I thought the problem was one of the cameras, but after some tests I found the problem is my RAW converter. Infact this happens only with NEF (RAW) files, and if I shot a RAW+JPG image, the D3s RAW file opened in Lightroom 4 (or Camera RAW) is underexposed if compared with its JPG on-camera version.
I think no camera setting is affecting this behaviour. I reset either the D3s and the D700. No D-Lighting is set on-camera. This happens only with the D3s and only with Camera RAW and Lightroom.
Other RAW converters display the D3s RAW file correctly exposed, the same as its JPG version, and the same as the D700 RAW and JPG. I tested so far Capture One, DxO Pro Optics and Raw Therapee.
Color profile used is custom, but I tried using Adobe Standard and the result is the same.
Default develop settings affect only color profile and sharpening, and I got the same problem on a fresh new installation of Lightroom where no default develop settings are set.
If anybody with a D3s can check if his NEFs are underexposed if compared to their JPG versions when opened in LR or Camera RAW, I would appreciate that much.
Any idea about the origins of my problem would be great.
Thank you.

I know, DdeGannes, but a different rendition of 2 pro cameras at the same settings is a bit frustrating.
Would it be better to underexpose the D700 while shooting, or setting a default -0,5EV on every imported picture, if the problem goes on?
Moreover, seems the Nikon D3s ISOs need to be pushed +2/3 to obtain the same exposure as the D700 in LR workflow. So the advantage of this great sensor could be lost.
I'd like to know more about D700 and D3s rendition comparison in LR/ACR at same settings.
It's not unusual for two camera bodies of even the same exact make and model to have Exposure differences of up to 1/3 EV, which is very noticeable. Ditto for  White Balance differences. For Example:
Camera 1 is +1/3 EV and Camera 2 is -1/3 EV = 2/3 EV Difference
Camera 1 White Balance is -500KTemp and Camera 2 is +500K Temp = 1000K Difference
Tack on minor differences between the LR Camera Profiles and it will get much worse if heading in opposite directions, as above.
The only way to compare the raw NEF files from two cameras is to use a RAW converter that applies NO profiles, NO Gamma Correction, or any other modifications to the raw pixel data. See may post here for information on 'Rawnalyze:'

I believe the Nikon D700, D3, and D3s cameras are supported in Rawnalyze 2.10.4.0. If not you can convert the NEF to DNG.

  • Just upgraded to 10.8.4 and now can't open canon raw files in photoshop cs5 with camera raw plug in 6.7

i've just upgraded to os 10.8.4 and now i can't open canon raw files in photoshop cs5 with camera raw plug in 6.7 which worked perfectly prior to the upgrade....anyone else encountered this issue?

Adobe's software is a mess in terms of the fact that it's sprayed all over the place and may not survive an OS upgrade.  Try reinstalling Photoshop CS5.

  • When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size?

When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size from canon 5d mark iii, in older versions I used to be able to import the files as larger images. It use to have a number of options for the images size. The option now is smaller than the maximum size used to be.

You know what - I'm sorry
I'd had a crazy long all-nighter session sorting out images for a client, then decided - when I should have simply gone to bed - to set up the new photoshop. At the very start I made a silly mistake, tried to sort it out then decided to call it a day, responding to your remarks with the problem still in my head but feeling more and more tired.
Responded again to your comment earlier with the problem still in my head but not in front of me on the screen - however with a fresh head I just turned it all on, opened up PS and today could instantly see what was going on - Oops!
Thank you for being patient with a sleep deprived photographer who must have been getting annoying yesterday
    I am officially embarrassed

  • Why can't I send older RAW files from iPhoto to Adobe Camera RAW?

I have a 20" Intel iMac (OS  X 10.5.8) and use iPhoto '09 (Version 8.1.2) for storing and organizing the digital images produced by my Nikon D200 and D700 cameras. When I wish to edit a photo I right click on the image and select Edit in External Editor. The external editor is Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac.
In iPhoto/Preferences/Advanced for RAW Photos I have checked "Use RAW when using external editor." Recently I successfully sent new D200 and D700 RAW images from iPhoto to PSE 6 for conversion by Adobe Camera RAW (Version 5.4.0.57). However, I was not successful in attempting to do the same thing with older D200 RAW images taken more than three years ago. In all cases what showed up in ACR were JPEGs rather than the RAW images. I don't understand why this is happening. What is needed to resolve this issue? Any remedial information will be appreciated.

Well all of that tells us that the Library is sound and not corrupt - which is good news.
Now the question would seem to be 'Why isn't iPhoto respecting the settings you've chosen in the Preferences?"
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • "Developing" raw files in iPhoto vs Photoshop Camera Raw.  Observations ...

I need to generate 3 "exposures" from a large group of raw (Nikon D200 NEF) format images. A bracket of sorts: 0 ev, -2 and +2. Ideally I would like to do it in iPhoto since It would be much faster than opening each photo in Photoshop ACR and saving it from there. But I was concerned that the quality of the "developing" would not be as good in iPhoto than in PS.
However, when I generated my 3 exposures by using Edit > Adjust > Exposure slider and setting it to +2 and -2 then saving as tiff16 and then compared those with the same 3 exposure created out of ACR, I find that the iPhoto version does a much nicer job keeping the very bright highlights in check. The PS versions seem to have much more clipping in those same highlights.
Has anyone noticed this? Is iPhoto actually better than ACR at generating different exposures from raw files?
    Thanks for any help.
    Bo
P.S. Changing the exposure is the only thing I have modified. Everything else is left at default.

Thank you guys. I think you are probably correct on this.
Terence, re: Aperture and NEF, I know this was discussed a lot a while back but I've been out of the loop for a while. Since the raw converter is at the OS level, does this mean that iPhoto and Aperture use the same converter and therefore should yield the same results at that level?
    Thank you

  • Canon CR2 raw images are forcibly cropped by Camera Raw

I posted this on the Photoshop Discussion as I did not realise that Camera Raw has its own - sorry folks!
Camera raw is cropping my cr2 images even after I have removed the crop in DPP (Digital Photo Professional - Canon's own raw editing software). I have many images cropped by a Canon 5D3 as it forces a 16:9 crop when you take a still while in video mode. The rest of the data is in the raw file, but this is not read by Camera Raw which forces the 16:9 crop. I have removed the crops in DPP, and even re-cropped with a different crop, saved the files and used every way I can imagine to get them into PS short of turning them into tiffs. I do not want to save as a tiff, as I really like the tools in PS Raw, especially the exposure tool (I am no great photographer but I have some very special and irreplaceable pics form fieldwork overseas which are ahem errr not quite correctly exposed).
My ideal worflow is open folder in DPP - star rate the pics I want to work on. crop them (nice to do this in DPP as it is part of the selection process) then get them into Camera Raw without any more effort, then if an image can be tweaked - do it as a Raw, if it needs more work - get it into PS6 as a tiff and go from there. This seems to minimise effort and minimise file space, at the expense of having two different file types.
Does anyone else work like this, or is there a better way to review 300 similar pics and get the best selected and processed? Has anyone else encounteres this refusal of Camera Raw to ignore the camera's crop? I bleive that there is a plug-in for lightroom, does anyone know a work around for PS  - I have PS6 with raw 7.3.
    Thanks
    Gor

Oh can I, thanks . I couldn't see a way to open a tiff in ACR - It only opens when I drag a Raw image into ps6, and it has no file>open to allow me to open a tiff.  In fact it is a rather strange piece of software - it doesn't seem to exist on its own (not as part of production suite anyway).
This would be a work-around for sure if you could tell me how to do it??
    UPDATE
FOr anyone else with this problem you can force ps6 to open all tiffs in ACR with a setting in preferences in RAW - automatically open all tiffs. It is still a bit of a pain as i dont really want to automatically open them all, but hey!

  • Can't open raw file after update 6.6 camera raw

Just updated camera raw in photoshop 5 on a mac pro running 10.6.8 os wont open a raw file and program freezes and must force quit to close. Lightroom update has problems as well. Don't recommend updating to either

Same Problem.  Everything worked fine until ACR 6.6 install just now on Windows 7 machine (CS 5 Production Premium).  Bridge/Photoshop can no longer read my Canon 5D Mark II RAW files, but work fine with older Canon camera RAW files, TIF's, jpegs.  How do I uninstall just ACR 6.6 and reinstall ACR 6.5 without doing anything else? Thanks.

  • Unable to open Canon 650D Raw files in PS CS5 [was:Camera Raw]

    Hi everyone
I have tried to downlaod my raw files CR2 to my photoshop cs5 but it keep saying
"Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of camera raw."
My camera model is Canon 650d which is supported and i have downloaded the latest raw update but everytime i go to the Help > About Plug in
it keep saying that my version is 6.3.0.79

The 650D requires Camera Raw 7.1 or higher.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
CS5 is only compatible with Camera Raw up to version 6.7. Thus you cannot open 650D Raw files in CS5.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Thus you must either upgrade to CS6 or CC or convert your Raw files to DNGs using the free Adobe DNG converter. Then open and edit the DNG files in CS5.

  • Can I edit my RAW files from Aperture in Adobe Camera Raw in CS5?

I like Aperture for organizing my files and doing simple adjustments. I purchased CS5 and will be taking a class to learn more complex editing. Is there a way to store my photos in Aperture and get them into CS5's Camera Raw in the RAW format? When I try to do that they are tiff or jpg.

In the preferences you are able to select which file type you would like to export to an external editor, the assumption is that you have made basic corrections and accept the RAW processing in Aperture so want to work with a tif or jpeg.
If you are wanting to start from you camera RAW file, ie no processing, you will need to actually export the master file and work from it.

  • Opening raw files from LR to Photoshop camera Raw

I have been trying to open a RAW Dng. file from Lightroom into Adobe PS Camera Raw, but I keep getting a message that says,  This version of LR may require te PS camera raaw plug-in version 8.1 for full compatibility.  I have downloaded camera raw plug-in 8.1, but I am still getting this message.  Plese help!
    Meghan

The raw processing in LR5 corresponds with the ACR 8.1 plug-in for PS, which the message is telling you.
ACR 8.1 is only compatible with either PS-CS6 (upgrade) or PS-CC (subscription), so to “sync them” you need to purchase an upgrade to PS-CS6 or purchase a monthly subscription to PS-CC which is apparently on sale until the end of the month.

  • Cannot open Olympus OM-D E-M5 Raw files in CS6. [was:camera raw?]

I am trying to open ORF raw files, but PS6 can't open them.  I am at Camera raw 7 and the update file says I am fully updated.  There are higher versions but I don't know how to access them.

Are you sure you mean Photoshop version 6 the is a very old version of Photoshop before ACR existed. ACR first became available as a extra cost plug-in for Photoshop version 7.  ACR started to be shipped with Photoshop with  Photoshop CS. Each version since Photoshop CS has a newer version of ACR which is not compatible with older versions of Photoshop. So
    CS ACR version is 2.4
    CS2 ACR version 3.7
    CS3 ACR version 4.6
    CS4  ACR version 5.7
    CS5 ACR version 6.7
CS6 and CC ACR version 8.4 however the new features in ACR 8.4 for CC are crippled in CS6. CS6 just get the new Camera support.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
If you have CS6 use menu help>Updates it should find the ACR 8.4 for CS6 and update your installation. If it does not you can down load it and the DNG converter.  However don't convert to DNG just use your OFR RAW files.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2014/04/camera-raw-8-4-and-dng-converter-8-4-now-a vailable.html
If you do mean Photoshop version 6 you need to see if Olympus  has a RAW converter for Photoshop version 6 for your camera.

  • PS/Bridge not recognizing raw files - HAVE updated DNG Converter & Camera RAW

Had to re-install my Adobe CS3 due to hard drive crash.
Now that I have re-installed, Photoshop & Bridge won’t recognize my raw files.
I HAVE updated my Adobe Camera Raw (3 times in the last hour), and my DNG Converter (4 times in the last hour). Nothing works. Any ideas?

If in photoshop cs3 you go to Photoshop>About Plug-in and click on the words Camera Raw, which version does it show?
Since photoshop cs3 can only use up to camera raw 4.6 and the EOS 5D Mark II requires at least camera raw 5.2, cs3 won't open those files directly without some help.

  • Unable to open Sony A77II Raw files in PSE11. [was: Camera raw]

I have the Sony A77 ii and i cannot open the Raw files in Elements 11.  It says the file appears to be from a camera model that is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw.  I have the latest version installed.  Does anyone else have this issue?

    According to this link :
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
the A77 II is only supported with ACR 8.5 which is not compatible with PSE11. It would need PSE12 with the latest ACR update.
The free solution is to download the Adobe DNGconverter.
That free and independent software can batch convert a whole folder of raw files to the DNG raw format that PSE11 can read.

  • HELP!!! Raw files are corrupt in lightroom 3

So I am new to lightroom 3 and have been im
porting jpegs  for the past 6 weeks. Just changed to raw images.
Imported 100 images they were all fine until I got into the development mode and then 33 of the 100 were corrupt
. So I tried a different card, same problem.
So I just bought a new card and installed lightroom 3.2 and tried 100 images again
    THIS TIME IS WAS WORSE!!!!
This time even in development it was fine, and the histogram even showed perfect and then about 3 seconds later the histogram gets wiped and the image goes corrupt????
    Any ideas?

I'm having the same problems though it is just a few per shoot.  I also don't think it is a hardware issue (though I've sure sometimes it could be).  I've had it happen using different CF cards.  And the file doesn't seem to be corrupt on transfering to my hard drive.  I'm using a Canon 40D.  Using Lightroom 3.2 64bit.  I shoot in RAW.  Here is my work flow.
I import the photos to my external hard drive via the camera.
I then back up the originals before importing into Lightroom by burning them to back up discs.
I then import them into Lightroom from their location.
Upon initial look everything is fine but when you actually select an image and the preview is fully rendered you can see the corrupt image.  Usually a white rectangle in the bottom right side the image.  Sometimes you get the yellow and pink streaking in that same area as well.
In trying to open the original file from my hard drive using just my basic Canon Digital Photo Proffesional after it was imported into LR it also states that the image is corrupted.
Now if I get out my back up disc and copy that image to my desktop and open it in Canon Digital Photo Proffesional it opens it without problem.  There is no corruption.  So the file that I backed up from my hardrive shows no corruption.  I think the original file is fine.
I then copied the image from my desktop to the original folder on my external hardrive overwriting it.  The image in lightroom is now fine.  There is no corruption.
Process of elimination leads me to believe that the corruption happens on importing into Lightroom.  It isn't my cards (different cards same problem).  It isn't my external hardrive as the file copied from that drive is fine.  It seems random especially being that I can overwrite the file with the same file and then it is fine.
I really hope this problem is sovled quickly.  This to me is a BIG deal.
