Nikon D4 NEFs not opening

Hi, I have both Photoshop CS5.1 and Photoshop 6 and have upgraded to latest versions of Adobe Camera Raw and DNG converter. However, my NEF files still will not convert/open. The product descriptions for ACR and DNG converter says it should support the D4 files. Can someone please help as I have clients to send pics to asap and this issue is costing my money.
Many thanks.
Chris

Hi Curt. My NEF images do not open in camera RAW or DNG converter. It says reads:
"Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw.
Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information." (Camera Raw)
and..."The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files." (DNG converter)
I have tried all the versions of Camera 6.7 onwards to the current version and the same with DNG converter and on both CS5.1 and CS6.
I download photos from my computer using ViewNX2/Nikon Transfer (current version).
This is very frustrating

RAW (NEF) photos from my new Nikon D750 will not open in Camera RAS with Photoshop Elements 11. This has not been a problem with previous Nikon cameras. I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.5. How can I solve this problem?  Thanks.

Aside from upgrading to pse 13, you can use the 8.7.1 adobe dng converter to convert the files to dng copies, which pse 11 should then open.

Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported.  There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

I just installed ACR 8.7.1 and can view and adjust Nikon D810 NEF files but when I press "OPEN" (from ACR) to begin work in PS CS6 they will not open. CS6 does launch but I dont see the NEF file. My Canon CR2 and Fuji RAF files open fine in in CS6. Any ideas?

  • Nikon D2Xs NEF not working with Aperture

This is so shocking. I should have researched more..... but I cannot believe that Nikon and Apple do not have it together on Aperture??
I just switched from the Canon 1DS, which worked like a charm with Aperture, to the Nikon D2Xs and Apertrue will not support NEF files from the camera. Frankly. I am pretty stunned. What's the deal? I find a lot of chatter in the forums about other Nikon model NEFs that are not working.
Since there are only 2 serious top of the line pro-digital SLR manufacturers out there, I would have thought that they would both be supported fully.
Nikon Tech support said that their plug-in developer kit has been available for a long time, it is up to Apple to take advantage of it.
Am I out of line here - ranting on..
Does anyone know of a solution to this issue, other than dumping Aperture and moving to Nikon's Capture NX (when they get to finally release it) and Photoshop?
Many thanks for you help in advance,

So you switched from Canon to Nikon. I decided to do
the switch vice versa. What were your reasons to pick
    Nikon?
The EOS and the D2x are both very excellent cameras. Some things I find better with the D2x:
    Image quality.
First off, as far as I know prints from Canon's best and Nikon's best are similarly excellent. In spite of the EOS's ~50% higher cost and additional pixels it does not provide significantly better prints. Nikon worked some pretty good engineering to achieve that.
    Price.
Most photography involves price tradeoffs with faster/better lenses, etc. costing more. In the case of the D2x the arguably equal and in some ways better camera actually costs $thousands less.
    Speed.
The D2x shoots RAW at 5 to 8 fps versus the EOS 4 fps. When you are trying to capture the "perfect" instant of a rapidly changing scene higher frame rates increase the likelihood of catching the perfect moment. Or if you are auto-bracketing, faster speed captures your bracketed images before the scene changes. The concept of shooting a burst of 5-20 frames just to catch the very best pic is new to most photogs, because with film it was impractical. With cameras like these DSLRs new photo workflows may evolve. [Edit: My workflow has evolved. I now shoot almost all dynamic shots and many group shots as a burst of 2-5 pix at 2-5 fps.]
    8 fps Crop Mode.
The D2x will shoot 6 megapixel images taken from the center of the frame at 8 fps. So if one wants to shoot tele action shots like sports it is ideal.
    Buffer capacity.
IMO a much bigger issue than fast frame rate is the buffer capacity at that fast frame rate. The D2x captures about twice as many pix (~22) as the EOS does before the buffer fills.
    Card capacity.
Canon built a slower camera with 30% more pixels and that leads to less images per card, slower file transfers, etc.
    LCD size.
The D2x LCD is more than 50% larger than the EOS. The larger LCD changes everything as far as the ergonomics of DSLR workflow are concerned. Just try a D2x side-by-side against the much smaller EOS LCD.
Exposure Compensation (used constantly in DSLR workflows).
+/- 5 EV for the Nikon versus +/- 3 EV for the Canon.
    Weight.
Being a 200# male with large hands I don't worry about size and weight too much. The Canon does weigh almost a pound more. Dimensions are pretty similar, with the Nikon a few mm larger. If size/weight are issues the Nikon D70s and Canon 20D are much smaller but sacrifice pro features like good viewfinders.
    Self-timer.
Nikon has choice of 2/5/10/20 seconds whereas Canon is only 2 or 20 seconds. I find 2 seconds is sometimes not enough to let the camera settle down on the tripod if it is extended, so typically I use 5 seconds. Using 20 seconds as a cable shutter release substitute would drive me crazy. Often this is moot because I almost always have a cable shutter release with me.
    Framing.
Some folks prefer a DSLR to be the same lens factor as 35mm film. Other folks do not. Quality superwide lenses are achieved at a $500-$1500 cost while supertelephoto is a $5000-$15000 cost; personally I prefer the 1.5 factor since it extends the expensive telephoto range. However, 1:1 versus 1:1.5 is a matter of personal preference rather than one being "better" unless print quality were to suffer.
The high end EOS does beat the Nikon D2x hands down in lower noise at ISOs of 800 and above. I am not familar with the high ISO performance of the D2xs, however.

  • NEF RAW files from my Nikon D5300 will not open in Photoshop CS3

Is there a plug-in or update I can download that will make it possible for my Photoshop CS3 to open NEF files in RAW.
I noticed a similar discussion a couple of years ago and I followed the advice and as far as I can tell I have the most up-to-date version of my software, and the Camera Raw plug-in is Version 4.6.0.30
I also have the same problem using CS5. Both versions say they cannot recognize the file type. Can I use a converter to make them a different kind of RAW file, but still a RAW format? I would prefer to simply be able to open them in Photoshop for editing.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    Barb

I just checked the compatibility list again, and the D5300 requires Camera Raw 8.3 (Not 7.3) or Lightroom 5.3. You have Lightroom 5, but what exact version of Lightroom 5 do you have? It might require that you update your Camera Raw and your Lightroom in order to have support in both Photoshop and Lightroom.
You can check your version of Camera Raw by going to the help menu in Photoshop, then about plug-ins and then Camera Raw. The dialog that appears will indicate what version of Camera Raw you have installed. It should not be necessary for you to use the DNG converter unless you feel compelled to.

  • Nef will not open

Photo saved in NEF on Nikon D7000 will not open in Elements.  When trying to open as the Editor says could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot aprse the file? Photo Shop Elements 8 using in Windows 7

All camera makers like to make slight changes to the RAW format for their new models. Adobe then take a few months to produce a camera RAW plug-in to process the new format.
In the case of the D7000, the first version of the camera RAW was ACR 6.3 - unfortunately this was not available for PSE8, only PSE 9 and later.
I think your only options are-
    1) upgrade PSE - a word of caution, there may be a new version out later this year (Aug/Sep by normal timescale's)
    2) download the free DNG converter and convert the NEFs to DNGs and then process them as normal (will open in ACR)

  • Nikon D800 NEFs - why Colourdifferences  in LR4 and PS ?

Why do my Nikon D800 NEF files, opened from LR4 (here looking ok) into PS Elements 11, get completely different colours? - when they just dragged into PS 11 from a private folder don`t ?
Dare not use LR at the moment, thinking,  the differences are too severe to just "treat back",  by heavy adjustments.
Could anyone experienced help -  what to do, is it just a matter of clicking somewhere, adjusting something ?  Or exists general problems with Nikons colourprofiles ?
    With thanks Eva

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.

  • CS4 will not open Nikon D7000 NEF files; Is there a DNC that will open them?

    I have CS4 and Light Room 2
Apparently there is no Camera Raw update for the new Nikon D7000 NEF files for CS4.
I therefore down loaded the Adobe Digital Negative Converter Verson 6.3.0.79 which is compatible with Camera Raw 5.4 or later.
Using that DNC, when I do step 1, "Select the images to convert" I get the message "No items match your search".  It apparently is not recongnizing the D7000 NEF files.
Is there another DNC that will open and convert the D7000 NEF files?

I just bought the d7000 yesterday and was experiencing the same issue with cs4. I downloaded the DNG converter from adobe and selected the whole folder where the raw files were located (I was unable to select individual images) and it worked fine. It processed the files one by one with new name (without the $500 CS5 pricetag for now). The DNG files open in bridge and psd. Perhaps try selecting the folder?  Good luck.

I recently tried CS6 Suite.  Trial was over and I went back to Photoshop CS4.  However, it would not open Nikon (NEF) raw files. I uninstalled and re-installed the PS CS4.  This did not fix the problem.  Can anyone help?

NEF files from which Nikon camera?

  • My PS CS6 with camera raw 8.4 will not open Nikon D4s NEF files-

I have just upgraded from CS 5.1 to CS6.  The initial installation went smoothly and everything seems to work as it should.  The CR was version 7.  I then installed all of the updates using the Check Updates option from the menu.  That went fine also and the CR was updated to version 8.4.0.199 as reported under the About Plug ins.  It will still open my old nef files (Nikon D700) but it will not open files from the D4s, suggesting that I upgrade camera raw.  Now I have also downloaded and installed the latest DNG converter version 8.4.  That will show and convert the older D700 files but will not even show the D4s files In the same folder.  I uninstalled CS6 according to the uninstall instructions and then deleted the folder (Plug ins?) from the Common/Adobe location as instructed, and then reinstalled.  No improvement resulted. This is on windows 7 64 bit system with all updates.

Glad to be of help. But I'm curious (not critical of what you are doing) to know why so many people like to use Nikon Transfer to transfer their files to the computer. It is still necessary to import them into Lightroom. And, from my perspective, it seems simpler and maybe even a little quicker to use the Lightroom import dialog. I have Nikon cameras, and have never even installed the Nikon Transfer utility. What is so unique about it?
