Nikon D40 and shooting tethered

Is it possible to shoot tethered with the Nikon D40? I can't get it to work. Can anyone help and possibly post the steps to do this?

Nikon Camera Control Pro works just fine with a D40, and a USB lead, shoots any interval, for as long as you want. Nothing else needed, but have not used in some time. I'd rather use the same software that was storing my pictures, eg Ap. I'll be wanting to use a D300 for future outdoor work in that department, the facility being built-in, hence no laptop outside alone at night:-).

  • Nikon D40 and/or Sandisk Mobilemate SD+ work with camera connector?

Wondering if anyone has successfully dumped images from their D40, or via the afore mentioned SD card reader, to their iPod using the camera connector. The D40 is not on the list, and no mention of card reader either, but I've read other places that some devices work even though not listed.

Im using the connector with my D40 - but there are some odd quirks that keep poping up. The photos are fine on the ipod when you use it as a HD - but sometimes the photos dont show up under "photo-import"... not sure why. I restored and it worked... occationally you have to hard-boot reset your ipod and then it is ok. download frequently to avoid long 200-photo transfers (try 100 or less). Each D/L will create another roll to browse (even if its the same photos you just D/L'd)

  • Shooting tethered tethered with LR 3 and a D300

I just finished a photo shoot using a Nikon D300 and shooting tethered into LR3 and Windows 7.  Everything was working fine then my computer said the usb device is unrecognizable.  Until I reboot I cannot restore the connection. Can anyone advise me on this?

I don't remember what the settings were when I imported the catalog. Whatever the defaults were.
Whatever happened during import, I should still have the option to add the files when sync'ing a folder? But I don't.
Neither LR2 nor LR3 will allow me access to the edited DNG files now. I've erased and am rebuilding the catalog (all pertinent info was written to sidecar and/or within the DNG file, so I'm not anticipating any problems with this. It's showing the expected 27,000+ files being imported). I think I'll try building the LR3 catalog the same way when I fire it back up, once I'm sure I'm back up and running in LR2.
    Thanks for the quick response!

  • Nikon D800 and Lightroom

I have Lightroom 3 currently and updated to 3.6
I purchased the Nikon D800 and shoot my images with the RAW setting. However, these images will not transfer to Lightroom. I was told that I need Lightroom 4 in order to be able to transfer RAW images.
Is this 100% accurate? I do not want to purchase Lightroom 4 assuming this will be the answer.
PLEASE if someone could respond ASAP that would be great.

So if I purchase the Lightroom 4 software, my RAW files WILL transport from my Nikon D800?
Yes, as per the link provided by twenty_one above.
I get the teacher/student discount. Is L4 downloadable online or should I order it from Amazon, etc.?

  • Photoshop CS vs. Nikon D40 RAW (.nef)

    Hi there,
I can't open my RAW photos with Photoshop CS 1. I have a iBook G4, running on OS 10.3.9.
I have a Nikon D40, and my photos are in .nef format.
    Thanks,
    Brianna.

    Brianna-
    Actually this
is a good place to start, or better still probably the Photography forum at
The ACR Forum logically is ACR-centric and like Ramón suggests has good info on using
Adobe ACR to convert your RAW images. However there are many other solutions for converting Nikon NEF photos. Many pros find that Nikon CaptureNX2, Capture One or Apple's Aperture provide visually superior NEF conversion to Adobe's ACR. Individual cameras and individual preferences do vary.
Unfortunately with a G4 iBook the limited hardware power is a significant limiting issue. And OS 10.3.x excludes almost everything that will drive RAW conversions from a modern camera like the D40. Probably you are forced into an (IMO inferior) ACR2.4/DNG RAW conversion like Ramón suggests, or
for likely far better RAW conversion quality you can investigate using Nikon ViewNX, which I believe came free with your D40 or can be downloaded from Nikon, and alleges to run OK under OS 10.3.9.
IMO Nikon's software is a bit clunky, but only Nikon has full unimpeded access to the RAW data of Nikon cameras, so you will probably like the resultant RAW conversions of ViewNX
if it runs adequately on your setup. Do a trial.
    These suggestions are
in addition to not in lieu of Ramón's ACR suggestions, so try them too.
    Good luck!

  • Camera battery drain when shooting tethered to LR3.x

    Hi:
I've been experiencing very rapid battery drain in my Nikon D90 when shooting tethered into a laptop running LR3.x under Windows7 32-bit. Is this to be expected because of the constant transfer of images across the USB connection?
Thanks in advance for any insight on this.
    Regards,
    Peter

Even transfering via USB for downloading will cause the battery to drain. Tethering would certainly drain the battery more than shooting non tethered, but it shouldn't feel excessive.

  • Yosemite Photos not importing Nikon D40 RAW+JPEG

I tried to import RAW+JPEG photo sets from an SD card of a Nikon D40 and my first impression was that the photos were imported, they appeared on the Last Import album but then I noticed these issues:
    1. I was not able to edit the photo
    2. I was not able to select the RAW file to edit it
    3. When tried to import from Facebook, the Finder interface was not able to located the imported photo even though it appear on Photos app
I thought that the issue was related to the SD card so I connected the D40 via USB and imported again. Nothing different happen, the same 3 issues.
    My workaround was this:
    1. Insert the SD Card in the slot
    2. Open Finder
    3. Navigate through the folders to locate the NEF file (RAW file)
    4. Copy the file to the Desktop
    4. Open Photos
    5. Import the  NEF file from the Desktop
Edit was succesful and Facebook was able to upload it.

  • Problem Shooting tethered in LR 3.6  OS X 10.6.8 Nikon D3

I'm shooting with a Nikon D3 and am having trouble shooting tethered in Lightroom v3.6. Specifically, I'm getting the "No Camera Detected" message in the Lightroom tethered window.
All of my software is up to date. I'm running:
    OSX 10.6.8
    Lightroom 3.6
    D3 USB set to MTP/PTP
    D3 Firmware version 2.02 (for both A & B)
And no luck. The camera will fire fro the shutter release, but no image appears in Lightroom. I've tried many of the suggested fixes on the forum for this problem with Lightroom v3.4, but none have worked.
    Any suggestions?

Bill, I had a similar problem with Nikon Camera Control 2 Pro where the camera not detected message appeared. Nikon told me the usual things to check, USB cable provided by Nikon with ferrite coil surrounding the cable, fully charged batteries etc. Not of that worked! I finally figured out the problem with my system and offer my solution in hope that it will solve your problem. I'm running Win 7 Pro so my keystrokes may vary for your OS version:
    Here goes:
Start, Run, Type services.msc in the Open box, hit enter
Scroll to Windows Image Aquisition (WIA) service and double click the name
In the startup type pulldown menu select Automatic (don't click OK yet, do it after you are all done)
Select the Dependencies tab at the top of the WIA properties box to see the dependencies
Click on the + sign to the left of the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) dependency to see the system components
Go back to the services window and scroll to the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) line and double click it to open the properties box
In the startup type pulldown menu select Automatic, then click OK
Scroll to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator service and double click the name
In the startup type pulldown menu select Automatic, then click OK
Scroll to RPC Endpoint Mapper service and double click the name
In the startup type pulldown menu select Automatic, then click OK
Scroll to DCOM Service Process Launcher service and double click the name
In the startup type pulldown menu select Automatic, then click OK
Scroll to Shell Hardware Detection service and double click the name
In the startup type pulldown menu select Automatic, then click OK
Click OK to finish closing the WIA properties box
You should be done at this time and may need to re-start the computer. (not sure of that but why not at this stage)
Hope that helps slve your problem, It did for me.

  • Can I back up images in Lightroom to an external hard drive as I'm shooting tethered and sending files to a folder on the internal hard drive?

I'd like to be able to send files to both the internal hard drive and an external hard drive as I'm shooting tethered in Lightroom. Can this be done and if so how? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

  • Camera Raw, Photoshop CS2 and Nikon D40

Can't open camera raw images from my Nikon D40 in Photoshop CS2.
I downloaded the camera raw plug-in (3.7) but still cannot open the images.
    Many problems:
    1) I don't have the folder described in the instructions Library>Application Support>Adobe>Plug-ins>CS2?File Formats. My plug-ins are located inside my Photoshop folder. Even after I put the camera raw 3.7 in the plug-ins folder, it doesn't show up under "About Plug-ins."
    2) I don't have an NEF plug-in anywhere. I searched the places mentioned in forums as well as a my entire computer.
    Help!

Just one note of clarification that you need to understand. You do NOT have to match the version of the DNG converter with your version of Photoshop. You always want to use the latest version of the DNG converter. It will convert images from all of the most recent cameras that ACR supports. So, currently (as of today) you want to be using DNG converter version 4.4.1. It will create DNG files that will be compatible with any version of ACR back to version 2.4 which works with Photoshop CS.
The other thing to verify is what version of Camera Raw is installed on your computer. You want to make sure you are using version 3.7, because that is the last version that was created for Photoshop CS2. If you are using a Windows computer, open Photoshop and then go to Help/About Plug-Ins and click on Camera Raw. It should only be listed once; if it is listed more than once you have a problem. A dialog will appear that will indicate what version is installed. If it is anything other than ACR 3.7, then you don't have the latest version available.
Be aware that there will never be another update of ACR for Photoshop CS2. But if you keep track of the updates and always keep the latest version of the DNG converter on your computer you will have support for every camera that is supported by ACR.
I don't know if any of this information is helpful to you. I just want to help you understand how to integrate DNG files into your workflow.

Since pse 9 can only use up to camera raw 6.5 and the d600 needs at least 7.3 and the d800 needs at least 6.7, you can use the
8.6 adobe dng converter to convert those files to dng copies, which then pse 9 should open.
