Nikon D4s files appear as generic icons in Bridge 6
Our Nikon D4s raw files appear as generic icons when viewed in Bridge 6. I have downloaded Camera Raw version 8.7.1, which lists the Nikon D4s as supported
. I also have the latest Nikon Transfer software. I read one message recommending to purge the cache, but no luck. I also restarted after the downloaded software, and re-downloaded the raw files from the memory card. Any ideas?
Hi Yammer.
First thanks a lot for taking your time to help me. I am really happy about it!
I will try to answer:
1)
I meant by having the Camera Raw.8bi placed in BOTH "C:\Programmer\Adobe\Adobe Bridge CS5\Plug-Ins" and in C:\Programmer\Fælles filer\Adobe Plug-Ins\CS5\File Formats" the ACR will be found in two versions - or rather in two places (I know the former shouldn't be, but it solved my preview problem).
2)
YES - I do have tried twice starting the Adobe Bridge holding down the Ctrl-key and ticking the two (the third was greyed out but ticked anyway) and with no help.
3)
I have tried to do the *.8bi search you suggested, and this gives me the following dump - absolutely with a few more entries than yours. Some are like doubled.
Do you think I can just delete these?
Kind regards, Jan

Raw files (.nef) appear as generic icons - unable to view content
I have followed the instructions from the Adobe article "Raw files appear as generic icons?" posted at the Bridge forum start page, but my raw fils (.nef) are still appearing as generic icons.
I am using Bridge CS4 that came with PSE 8, Snow Leopard (10.6.2).
According to the article solution/point 3, if the currently installed version of the Camera Raw plug-in is earlier than 5.6 (as displayed in the title bar of the Camera Raw Preferences dialog (which is opened in Bridge CS4)), then proceed to download the 5.6 plug-in and follow the instructions to upgrade it.
My version displayed in the Camera Raw Preferences dialog is 5.0.0.178, so I proceeded to download the 5.6 plug-in and followed the instructions, but after that, the Camera Raw Preference dialog that I opened from Bridge CS4 still says version 5.0.0.178, and my raw files still appear as generic icons.
I do notice that the Camera Raw opened in PSE 8 has been upgraded to 5.6 (from 5.5) after that, but the Camera Raw Preference dialog still says 5.0.0.178).
Help in how I can view my raw (.nef) files in Bridge CS4 would be appreciated.
Thanks in advanceThanks for your prmpt input Omke.

Double check the instructions, you should have only one version of ACR
installed in the correct location in the root level (not user account!)
Yes, I replace the old camera raw plug-in at the root level (Macintosh HD), and I checked that there is only 1 Camera raw plug-in in:
Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 8/Plug-Ins/FileFormats
after following the instructions.
Also check if you downloaded the verson for PSE and not for PS itself.
Reread the instructions carefully and also try to purge cache for folder
using the tools menu / cache / purge cache for folder.
Yes, I did download the version for PSE, not PS. I've also tried purge cache for folder by following your instructions, with no success.
Another thing I discovered is that when I open the Camera raw preference dialogue from PSE 8 (after clicking on a raw (.nef) file), the version number on the title bar is 5.6.0.148, but when I open the Camera raw preference dialog from Bridge CS4, it remains as 5.0.0.178, so maybe that has something to do with whey I can't view my raw (.nef) files from Bridge (and have no problems with PSE 8)?
Any further insights would be appreciated!

proceeded to download the 5.6 plug-in and followed the instructions, but after
that, the Camera Raw Preference dialog that I opened from Bridge CS4 still

Tif files have generic icon in bridge
Hi,
I can see the proper icon in the finder os 10.9.2 but only the generic tif icon in bridge. PSD work fine.
these tifs were created in Lightroom 5
I tried logging in as a different user, no change.
thanks for the help.Don't use Lightroom, but have heard that you can create several different versions of files, some not readable outside of LR. So check that out.

Three Database Files Appear & Root Directory Icons Rearranged
I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8.5) from Lion on two of my Macs (15" MBP, Late 2011 & iMac 20" Early 2008). On both machines, seemingly at random, three database files appear on the root directory (sorry I can remember the names now) and all of the files/folders on the root directory are rearranged in alphabetical order. I have not been able to determine what triggers this action, but it is really annoying having to rearrange all of the file icons.
Anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how it can be "fixed"?
Thanks!
GordonHave you found an answer to this problem? I have found it happens in Safari > Preferences > Privacy. When you click on the Privacy icon header, instantly the 3 .db files appear and re-arrange all my files into alphabetical arrangement on my root directory (Mac Pro SSD). It will also behave this way when you choose "Reset Safari" from the drop down Safari menu.

XMP files appear as applescripts (icons)
Hi there
I am retouching some files for someone.
We both have CR 7.4, and CS6. The files are D800 images.
When I open the file, the image looks totally flat, but all the levels (numbers for blacks, whites, contrast etc) all show the same as my client's computer.
Also, before I touch the file the XMP files appear correct. Adobe seems to reognize them, and they have correct icon. However if I save a change to XMP, the file appears as an applescript file.
I tried the adobe clean up app, re-installed PS, am running the newest CR7.4
Is there something I'm missing? My OS is 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. My client is on 10.8 I beleive.
Any help would be great! You should not have to touch the XMP file. This is just the file that holds the raw image edit material. It normally is a hidden.

DNG File appears as an Icon and Not as Thumbnail in CS3 Bridge
Hi
If I save a Camera Raw manipulated image as a COMPRESSED (LOSSLESS) DNG file it appears back in CS3 Bridge as a DNG Icon and not as a thumbnail.
Is there a reason for this and can I get the saved file to appear as a thumbnail.
Many thankstry resetting your preferences and/or purging your thumbnails cache by holding Ctrl right after you launch Bridge(you have to be fast, you'll get a dialog box if you succeeded)

Raw files showing only as icons in bridge
This is a recent problem for me. The raw files in question are ".pef" files from a Pentax k100d that I've had for quite some time.
I started having a problem with Bridge crashing on me. In trying to solve that problem, I started Bridge by holding down the crtl key and choosing the three option to reset preferences and purge cache. Since doing this, all my thumbnails have disappeared and I can't get them back. I've read and found the appropriate locations for the camera raw plugins:
I am running 64 bit Vista. I have CS4 and found that the latest version of Camera Raw that I could install was version 5.7. I found the install instructions on the Adobe site. As it told me to do, I downloaded the zip file for version 5.7 and extracted. I moved the Camera Raw.8bi file from the top directory into C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats and moved the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Win64 folder into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats.
I also found the 5.7 Camera Raw installer and ran that. I am still having the same problem.
I have spent the better part of two days googling and trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.
I've tried moving all my cache files and letting them regenerate. I've purged the cache several times. Nothing I do works.
I do notice that when I go to a directory of photos that I have not been to in a while, I see the thumbnail for a brief moment. It quickly disappears and the flower icon appears.
Do I need to re-install Bridge? Do I have to uninstall first? I can't do that separate from Photoshop can I?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.I tried all of those options: Prefer Embedded, High Quality on Demand, Always High Quality with every combination of Generate 100% previews. Still nothing
I searched for all the instances of the camera raw file and it found 4 versions of the file 2 associated with CS4 and 2 associated with Photoshop Elements that I used a couple of years ago.

TIFF & JPEG renders of RAW files appear different when viewed in Bridge
I am working with the demo of Photoshop CS6, with ACR 7.1. CS6 System Info will appear at the bottom of this post. Summary: AMD Phenom II x6 1090T, 16GB RAM, Win7-64bit, nVidia GTX 460 video w/1GB RAM, approx. 2.5 TB free space on multiple internal physical drives, Canon 50D, CR2 files. I have a camera profile generated through Profile Editor, and the monitor is calibrated with i-1 Match.
I have been practicing with the new Basic Panel controls (Process 2012). When I felt that I was getting the hang of them I started saving JPEG and TIFF files and noticed differences between what appears in Bridge and ACR. I worked on this for some time and searched out some other discussions in the Forum which seemed to talk about similar results. I have now tried Image Processor via Bridge, Save Image in ACR, and Open>Save manually in PS CS6. By whatever route, the TIFFs and JPEGs are different (lighter in the following examples, but this is not always the case), while PSD saves seem to be close, but not identical to the CR2 when viewed in Bridge or Photoshop. Here is a screen capture of Bridge thumbnails which show the differences.
I hope the labels come through legibly. The two images on the second row are CR2 and PSD respectively. What is really odd to me is that when I resaved the PSD file as a TIFF, the same sort of difference shows up in the TIFF. (See _MG_7960_via_PSD.tif above.) I have uploaded the CR2, its XMP, a TIFF and a JPEG on Sendspace (107 MB). I did this earlier in my experiments and regret that the file naming is not as informative as might be.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/t0lhko
I have run a few other ACR adjusted CR2 images through Image Processor and seen a variety of differences between the rendered files and the RAW versions. The differences seem to be in Exposure and Contrast. Most of these looked somewhat darker, unlike the examples above.
I will happily provide any other information on request. Thanks!

Thanks again,
Kieren
EDIT: Bingo! I took Auto Tone off in ACR Preferences (in Bridge) and the non-RAW files immediately regenerated thumbs and previews. They now are indistinguishable from the PSD. There is still the very slight difference which I mentioned between the PSD and the CR2. While that seems odd, it is small enough to be relatively trivial.
Many thanks!

RAW (.cr2) files only display as icons in Bridge CS3?
Hi
Can anyone help please to help get my thumbnails back in Bridge CS3?! They used to show okay, but for a while they haven't. It just a pain when trying to sort through shots I've taken in RAW!
Weirdly, they show fine on my home Mac, but on my work Mac I just get the icon – but both are running the same software (CS3), just different OS versions (10.6 at home, 10.4 at work - which shouldn't make a difference?). They also won't show in the preview pane when you select it – you have to open it to see it.
I've updated to the most recent CR plug-in that CS3 willl allow, purged the thumbnail cache... nothing working so far. Other files show up fine. I've looked at the other posts, but most of those seem to be CS4/5, and remedied by the plug-in update...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
BenOkay! Fixed now... after a little more digging, it turns out I wasn't putting the CR plug-in into the root folder....
Schoolboy error....
Thanks anyway!

Now that I've installed my new windows CS6, all my .psd files have the 'generic icons' windows give to files they don't recognize. Everything else has normal icons (i.e. Illustrator files) but the Photoshop files are blank. This is true whether I'm on any type of viewer format, i.e. details, thumbnails, Can someone help me?
Hi Eelswood,
Please try changing the file association for .psd files.
Right click on the file > Select 'Open with' > 'Choose default pogram' and then select 'Photoshop' in the list of programs.
Make sure 'Always use the selelcted pogram to open this kind of file' is checked at the bottom of the window. -
Nikon D4s - How do I open this RAW file?
Could someone please tell me how to open a NIkon d4s file in LIghtroom5? I understand this camera is not yet supported.
When might an update be available? Any means around this issue? Bridge? Photoshop? I am not a CC user at this time.
Thank you,Adobe issued a "Release Candidate for Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 RC" and you will need PS CS6 or CC to update to this version of Camera Raw.
Info is available at the following link.
http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/
It is expected that an update to Lightroom 5.4 should be released soon (Adobe does not usually supply this info as to when), so soon can mean "when its tested and ready".
In the meantime you can use the Adobe DNG Converter version 8.4 RC, to convert your NEF files to DNG and then you will be able to use the DNG in PS CS5 and LR 5.3. Make sure that when you use the converter you take the option to retain a copy of your NEF file for use in the event the profile for your camera is improved/enhanced. -
I have the same problem I've seen others have. Since the last upgrade on Reader all of my PDF files have a generic icon. Any ideas of how to fix this?

I have Mac version 10.9. Adobe elements 12. New camera Nikon D4s. I have uploaded DNG plug in 8.4. Tried to convert my raw photos and it still does not work. How can I upload raw photos taken with my Nikon D4S so that I can edit these photos?
How did you try to install ACR 8.8. The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma. This one tells you what your camera needs: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html This one tells you what version of software you need: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6. (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13. Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter. Download and install it from here for FREE: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890 Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use. That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom. DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless. There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality. -
Cover Flow displays generic icon only for small JPEG files
I recently used the excellent CocoThumbX to strip off all the Adobe preview icons from my Photoshop-created images (a mixture of JPEG, TIFF, and PSD files). That neatly solved the low-res "fuzzy" Cover Flow thumbnail problem lots of users have complained about.
However, now I have a problem that I haven't seen addressed elsewhere. Lots of my JPEG files still appear as generic JPEG icons in Cover Flow. They are all Adobe Photoshop JPEG files, and they are all no larger than 150KB in size. There's nothing wrong with the files as Quick Look displays them without a hitch, and I can open them in Photoshop no problem.
Any idea how to get Cover Flow to render their thumbnails properly?
Resaving them from Photoshop fixes the problem, but I have thousands of such images and don't want to resave all of them even with a batch action if there's some other simple way of fixing this.
Message was edited by: Owen LinzmayerI have the same problem except with ALL jpegs, not just small ones. Other file types (pdfs, eg) preview just fine in cover flow, and I am able to open all the jpgs by themselves in any program, they just don't render in cover flow.
I think this happened in conjunction with the upgrade to 10.5.1.
Any help would be most appreciated!
