Nikon D50 and iPhoto 4.0.3

I recently purchased a Nikon D50 digital SLR. I am still waiting for my SD card, so I haven't actually used it yet, but I am hoping I won't have any compatibility issues with iPhoto 4.0.3. Sure, it would have been smart to check this out in advance, but, frankly, I would have bought the same camera either way. Does anyone know if I will have to upgrade iPhoto? And, am I correct in assuming I need to get the full iLife upgrade in order to get iPhoto 6?

Hi Tyra,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
I hope you like that camera, my girlfriend's dad has one. I have only heard great things about it. Anyways, I am not sure if the Nikon D50 is compatible with iPhoto 4, but I know iPhoto 6 will. You won't have to download any drivers in, just plug and import. I suggest upgrading to iPhoto 6 (Comes solely with iLife '06). Check it out, I bet you will be impressed.
I hope that helps,
Jon
PS I am getting a Minolta 5D soon and I like RAW imaging capabilities for the new iPhoto.

  • Nikon D50 and IPhoto

I am thinking for buying the Nikon D50.
Does it work OK with IPhoto 6?
Also does it handle RAW images? I have looked through old discussions and only found old ones that were inconclusive.
Any views on the camera itself?
    Many thanks,
    Phil.

    Tian,
I have new D50 and trying to determine what RAW converter and post processing program to use. You say Iphoto6 handles RAW just fine. Is that not the case for Iphoto5? I know I can't import them, or am I doing something wrong? And if I did use Iphoto6, what can I do with it? Without PS or some other sophisticated editing tool, will conversion and manipulation of RAW files be noticeably different than JPEG?
    Thanks,

  • Nikon D50 with iPhoto 6

    Hello!
Does anyone have experience using iPhoto for downloading images from the Nikon D50? When I connect the camera to the computer, the system recognizes the SD card rather than camera - "Lexar media" appears rather than the camera name.
How can I download into iPhoto and then do a second download from the camera directly onto the Hard Drive?
Any other tips from experience would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

I also have the D50...I believe the name 'nikon D50' is added to the card when you format it from the D50 itself. It functions as a card reader...and will reflect the name of whatever camera was used to format it. So, if you take the card which was formatted from a Canon P & S, and insert it into your D50 and then connect to your mac...it will read 'Canon xxx'.
For battery life, I would recommend you get a card reader...I've noticed a huge improvement in the number of frames I can take w/ the D50 since using the card reader to transfer files instead of the camera.
Also, if you want to copy the files to your computer more than once, there are several ways to do it. First...don't have iPhoto delete the pix...then use Finder, select the 'Nikon D50' and select and copy the pictures you want. The second way I've used, and somewhat faster, is to use finder, navigate to the iPhoto library, then to 'originals' and then to the year and roll # or name you used for the import...select and copy to wherever you wish to have them.
    hope that helps.

  • Nikon D200 and iPhoto

    Earlier, I asked the question,
I'm considering upgrading to a Nikon D200. Can I download images in RAW/NEF and JPEG from Nikon D200 into iPhoto 5.0 on my old PowerBook G4?
One person answered the question and then the thread was archived for some reason. I was hoping to get more discussion on this topic. For example, I'd like to ask the person who responded if the camera and the software work well together and if this is the primary software he uses for his or her digital photos.

I am just trying to start a topic???
I have a Nikon D200 and iPhoto 08 with the newest download. It had camera compatibility updates, I think that is where my problem is. All of my Nikon RAW (NEF) files have the wrong White Balance temperatures in iPhoto. They were good before this download. How do I roll the update back, and how do I report it to Apple as a bug???

  • I have just purchased a Nikon D7000 and iPhoto downloads jpgs but does not show them. It shows an empty frame. If you double click the frame it will show the image. I have tried importing images from the Nikon provided software and the same thing happens.

I just purchased a Nikon D7000. However, iPhoto does not display JPEG images. I seems to download ok, but displays only an empty box. Double clicking on the box opens the image in a single display window. It does the same thing when importing from Nikon's supplied software. Forget about handling RAW files. Now, I'm having difficulty importing JPGs from Photoshop files for slide shows or use in iMovie.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Has anyone out there used the Nikon P6000's built in GPS features with iPhoto 09's Places feature? I am interested in buying the camera and wanted to know if there were others that have used the GPS features with iPhoto.
    Thanks!

  • Nikon D50 NEF edits show size as '0 KB'

I asked this question many months ago and never received a reply! But I hope someone now has some ideas or solutions.
I have a Nikon D50 and iPhoto works fine with the NEF files from shooting in Raw EXCEPT for the fact that it displays edited file sizes in the information box as "0 KB". And it calculates the folder size using that '0 KB' for the edited photos. Thus one has no idea of size for export etc. In preferences, I have checked 'save photos as 16-bit TIFF files' but they show up after editing as NEF still.

    STG
Not one I've seen mentioned before.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that doesn't help: create a new library (hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'.) Import some pics and see if the problem recurs.
    If it does:
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Darker display of Nikon D50 NEF vs. JPGs

Until now I used to archive my images with iPhoto and was fairly satisfied with the application. Especially the slide show features and integration with the other iLife components are great.
But now that I got a Nikon D50 and have decided to shoot RAW, I noticed that the RAW images are quite dark (as reduced in exposure) when compared to the JPGs imported the same time. (RAW/JPG Basic import).
With the camera also came Nikon Picture Project which does not show this behavior, has some good features, but is lacking others. So at the moment I'm using both programs to make up for the faults in both.
Another flaw with iPhoto is that it only shows very limited EXIF info.
Has anybody been able to display Nikon D50 RAW images correctly in iPhoto? Any EXIF Plugins for iPhoto?

Appreciate your feedback, and I understand the difference between RAW and JPG images, but I need to repeat that I do not see the same in either Nikon Picture Project or iView Media Pro or Graphic Converter. It's clearly an iPhoto issue for me.
Further testing today caused a strange thing to happen. I made a duplicate of a RAW file in iPhoto, then tried to open it externally with Nikon Capture, which caused iPhoto to change both RAW files to JPG, although I made no changes in Nikon Capture. Checking the Originals folder it showed that iPhoto had added two files to the original RAW file, one with a -1.jpg, and one with a _1.NEF.
Only the JPG can be opened. Both the original RAW and the Duplicate are corrupted now and don't open with any application.
There is clearly something wrong with the way iPhoto handles RAW files. It should not touch the Original RAW.
Maybe it's only NEFs from my D50?
Guess I need to wait for an affordable version of Aperture.

  • Bug report: Wrong As Shot White Balance for Nikon D50 NEF in Camera Raw 7, Lightroom 4

For Nikon D50 cameras Adobe Creative Suite 6 does not read "As Shot" white balance data whether it's specified or not. It defaults to "Automatic". We have the problem only for Nikon D50 and only in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Camera Raw 7.3 and Photoshop Lightroom 4. (Not in CS5. Not for Nikon D5100 or D7000 or Canon S95) .
There is a more detailed posting at photoshop.com.

  • Nikon D50 - DO not want to upload photos into iPhoto

Hello, I have a Nikon D50 camera, and I do not want iphoto to open when I connect the camera to the computer. iphoto automatically opens and I would much rather just copy the files to my hardrive myself. How do I do this?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
In your Applications folder you have Image Capture. Launch it and open its Preferences. This is where you set what you want to happen when you connect your camera. You can set it to launch Image Capture, which you can use to download the photos from your camera to a folder of your choice. Or set it to open nothing, and launch the application of your choice manually.

  • Aperture 3.6 and iPhoto 9.6 crashes with nikon .nef files (raw format)

I've got a problem with raw files support for my Nikon D700 camera. Even though this camera is listed here: https://www.apple.com/pl/aperture/specs/raw.html both Aperture and iPhoto see .nef files as a white image. If I try to edit one, both apps crash.
How can I get a raw files support in these applications?
I have updated os, apps and even tried to remove and reinstall raw camera bundle as it was described here RAW files suddenly show up as "not supported" (Aperture 3.5.1, OS X 10.10). No luck.
My OSX is installed on SSD, while iPhoto library is on the secondary HDD drive.

Norbert, I cannot find the post you are referring to.
Have you had the problem with Aperture 3.6? This is surprising, since the Aperture 3.6 released is supposed to fix this bug, see the release Notes: Aperture 3.6 Release notes
    Aperture 3.6 Update
Adds compatibility with OS X Yosemite.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture performance to slow down while browsing through images with onscreen proofing enabled.
Fixes an issue where Aperture could become unresponsive in rare cases when adding to a shared photo stream.
Fixes an issue that could cause Aperture to unexpectedly quit when using the Write IPTC Metadata to Originals feature.
Aperture no longer displays the alert, “This library has been opened with a newer version of Aperture.” when using Library First Aid with libraries previously opened in iPhoto.
Do you remember, which of the presets in Library/Application Support actually is causing the problem, since deleting all of them is causing a lot of work to restore the custom settings? It would be great to know the specific file.

  • Lion and iPhoto and Nikon Camera

Hello. I don't know if this is a Lion or iPhoto problem. So I'm posting this here. I have a Nikon Coolpix 990 camera. I took some photos today. When I attempted to import the photos to my iMac (2009, i7) running Lion with iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2, the camera wasn't recognized and I could not import my photos. However, when I connected the camera to my Macbook Pro late 2008 running Snow Leopard v. 10.6.8 and iPhoto 08 version 7.1.5, the camera was recognized and the import was successful. I rebuilt my iMac's iPhoto library but I have not attempted to sync my camera to it as I deleted the photos. Why was I unable to import the photos to my iMac?
    zoz

The pictures were able to be uploaded to iPhoto using a card reader. Apparently, in Lion, support from Nikon is no longer provided.

  • Taking pictures using image capture and Nikon d50

Hi, does any one know if it is possible to take pictures using image capture whilst my nikon d50 is connected to my MacBook so that the image is shown on the MacBook screen.

Yes! Indeed, I have that very same D50 (lovely isn't it?) and I just happenned to have taken already some pictures with it, from the computer.
Once it's pluggeg, go in Applications> Image Capture.
From there, you will either be able to download all the picture from the D50, or take new shots.
You can even share the camera (and it's pictures) online, so someone can even take picture with it (through a webpage). You could even try this yourself, play around in Image Capture and with it's share features, and somewhere it will give you the adress (internal ip adress) so suposely someone from your network (including your own computer) could go, check, and take pictures.
I've tried the web interface from my computer, but couldn't make it work with another one from my LAN. Have to work around this.
But in Image Capture, first make sure the D50 is selected (Devices>[pick it]) and then there is what you are looking for in the upper bar of the window.
    Have fun!

  • Lightroom 2 and Camera Profiles for the Nikon D50

    Hi,
I've installed Lightroom v2 and the new Camera Profiles, as per the instructions and various postings I should now see my camera name appear in the Profile section of Camera Calibration.
The default profile is ACR 4.4 and when I drop the list down I see the usual settings and Camera D2X Mode 1 Beta 1, Mode 2, etc. but no reference to Nikon D50?
The Metadata on my images is set to a Make of NIKON CORPORATION and a Model of NIKON D50.
Looking in C:\programdata\adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\ I can see there is a D50 profile but Lightroom v2 isn't showing it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
