Nikon D5000

I have a new Mac Book Pro and a new Nikon D5000 Camera. I can play the video clips in iphoto and imovie but the video clip quality is very poor. The Nikon takes video in HD. Is there anyway to view the videos with good quality on my Mac?

I realized I have imovie09 and posted under imovieHD. Still need a answer if someone knows. Ladybug2010

  • Importing photos from Nikon D5000 into iphoto

I just got a Nikon D5000 and cannot import my photos directly from the camera to iphoto using the USB cable supplied with the camera. I have no trouble when I use my D80 camera - plug it in to the USB and iphoto starts importing automatically. What am I doing wrong? I even tried using the Nikon Transfer software that came with the camera, but no luck there either. I have already made sure the connections are tight, camera is on and in play mode. I don't know what else to try. Very frustrating...grrrrr.

Lisa, attach the camera to your Mac, and then launch Image Capture. See what is set as the default whe this particular camera is connected.

  • Updates for raw files from Nikon D5000 on a photoshop elements 7 /windows 7 system

I have photoshop elements 7 but it won't open raw files from a nikon D5000 although I've followed the links and updated. It still says it won't open because it's the wrong type of file..I've downloaded a DNG converter but still nothing is happening.

You download and installed the camera raw 5.6 plugin, by following install directions on the following page?
Adobe - Photoshop Elements : For Windows : Camera Raw 5.6 update
If you have a windows 7 64 bit system, then the Camera Raw.8bi plugin goes in
Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats
(the path adobe gives is for a 32 bit windows system)
Also, use the Camera Raw.8bi outside the folder named Win64

  • CS3 and camera raw for Nikon D5000

I have dowloded the 4.6 plug in (installed automaticallywith updater). I still can not open my raw images
in cs3.  Is the Nikon D5000 only supported by cs4?

Camera RAW support is only added to whatever version of Photoshop is current at the time the camera is released which would have been CS4 for your newish camera.
CS5 is just around the corner (next 2-3 months) as is Lightroom 3, which will both have the ACR 6 color engine so if you can wait, that would be the version to upgrade to.
In the mean time, you can use the DNG Converter 5.6 to convert your RAWs to DNG (saving the original RAW somewhere in case something happens) and use whatever version of ACR you want.   The DNG Converter will give you a choice of what version of ACR to be backwards compatible with.

  • NIKON D5000 NEF - Lightroom 2.6 and PSE show colors quite differently from what Nikon Software show

With my Nikon D5000 DSLR camera, I took recently photos from small blue flowers. I had set-up my Nikon D5000 to create for every photo both a NEF File and a JPEG File (and had set my camera to use Automatic While Balance).
I noticed that for NEF Files Lightroom 2.6 (and also PSE 7, that uses internally Camera RAW ) shows me the blue colors of the flowers quite differently from what I see with PSE for the jpeg file. It is my impression, that it is in the Jpeg files, that the blue color is close to the reality; and  that it is with the NEF Files that Lightroom and PSE show a blue color that is quite different from the reality.
I also looked at the photo files with the NIKON "View Nx" 1.3.0 Software that came with my camera. With "View Nx" the blue colors (both with the NEF file and the Jpeg File) are very vlose that what i see with PSE 7 in the jpeg file (and quite different from what I see with LR and PSE for the .NEF File).
I mentioned this problem to Nikon Support. They suggested, that Nikon Software and Adobe software use different algorithms; and that the Nikon algorithms are better/closer adapted to the Nikon cameras than the more generalized Adobe algorithms that need to support a very large number of cameras.
But ....it is Lightroom that i wish to use to process my NEF Files and PSE that I wish to use to organize my Photos. Can a LR/Camera-RAW expert help me? I would like to find a solution to see with LR and with PSE in my D5000 NEF Photo Files blue colors that are close to the reality and close to what Nikon Software shows me on my PC. Please notice that I am very far away from being a professional and that i will probably not understand complicated explanations.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
An additional note, that is perhaps not relevant: I used LR to convert my NEF File into a JPEG File format and looked at the blue in the result. It looks the same as what LR and PSE show me for the .NEF File (and looks different from the jpeg file crreated by the NIKON camera).

    EJ and Jim
Thank You very much for your useful feedback.
I realize, that as a neophit I am an exot among the community of photo-experts and photo-professionals addressed by LR.  Therefore the wish that I will now express is perhaps inadequate. But since it is gently, that i express this wish, I am probably allowed to do so......
My wish for a future version of LR, is that LR comes out of the box with a "reasonable" interpretation of the RAW images of most important/widespread modern cameras....without requiring that non-experts like me gets confronted from the very beginning with the need to develop their own default settings.
For this wish, I will formulate a Feature Request.
You might wonder, why a non-expert like me is interested in LR instead of  using those Photo-Editing Software (e.g. PSE) that are supposed to address the need of non-experts. Well..... I am coming from the PSE world. I am reasolnably happy with the PSE Organizer....but  I hate the complex, inefficient, unfriendli "user-interface" (experts will probably tell: workflow-interface?) of the PSE Editor. Its really a last-century Software. LR is so much more friendly, even for non-experts...within the Library Module, i do not need to switch back and forth between one dialogue-window for each type of change.... nearly all what i need is in that one right-hand pane of the Library module.
I honestly believe, that Adobe should take a serious look at promoting/marketing  LR also to the audience of non-experts. That would be a good and attractive additional marketing opportunity for LR.

  • RAW support for Nikon D5000

I just got a Nikon D5000 but PSE 7.0 cannot load the RAW images.
I saw that ACR 5.4 with D5000 support is now available but it does not have the install scripts for PSE 7.
Has anyone been able to manually install the data files for the D5000?

    Thanks.
I went through the ACR 5.4 zip file and found the correct file (name=1003, size = 10.8 mb). copied that into the PSE 7.0 directory C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats and renamed it Camera Raw.8bi
PSE 7.0 now works perfectly with my Nikon D5000 raw files.

  • Nikon D5000 NEF Support

    Hello,
The current version of Camera Raw (5.3) does not support the Nikon D5000 NEF format. When can I expect support for this camera to be released? If you need a few NEF files to help in getting this done, let me know and I'll be happy to send you a few.
Until then, I'm using Capture NX 2 instead of Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.

  • Nikon D5000 RAW "Unsupported Image Format"

Well here's another one for the Unsupported Image Format category. I just received a Nikon D5000 took a hundred or two shots in RAW format only to find after importing them to Aperture a row of thumbnails. Now if only after clicking on a thumbnail for viewing it displayed the image and not "Unsupported Image Format".

all set with adobe raw 5.4, i grabbed the converter because the plugin is a p.i.t.a. and the installer isn't very friendly if you delete the plugin and try to start over. available from the labs at: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/CameraRaw5.4
i wouldnt expect apple to add compatibility till 10.5.8. its a big name and soon to be popular machine. so i would bet on it. but when that comes, id also bet to be a long time from now.

  • Iphoto 7.1.5 won't import RAW from Nikon D5000

Just got a new Nikon D5000. Imported a few JPGs fine but the RAW files are unrecognizable. What gives? Did not have problems with my RAW files from my old Nikon D70.

I got a NIkon P6000 and their RAW file format, .NRW is not compatible with Macs although Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2 make a stab at it. I have CS3, of course, and Lightroom 1. SO, I thought of returning the camera and getting the Canon G10. Now, it turns out one needs Adobe Camera Raw 4.0 to process Raw files in CS3 and LR 1. OK, so I have not been able to find Camera Raw 4. They take you only to 5. You guessed it - only compatible with CS4, etc. Anybody know how to work with Canon Raw files in Photoshop CS3? Or where I can get Adobe Camera Raw 4.0?
    Thanks

  • Camera raw per i file della nikon D5000

    salve a tutti,
qualcuno sa dirmi se esisite una versione della camera raw di phiotoshop CS3 compatibile con i file .nef della nikon D5000 ???

The D5000 needs Adobe Camera Raw 5.4 which will not work in CS3.
You must upgrade to Photoshop CS4 or use the DNG converter to make the files available to Photoshop/Bridge.
    The Windows version is here:

It would be helpful to let us know exactly how you tried to "load pictures from a Nikon D5000 into Elements 5" (i.e. what steps did you take), the error message that you received, or exactly what happens on your screen when "Elements hangs up and refuses..."
There should be no problem importing .jpg photos from any camera into Elements, so we need more information to help you.
Question: are you sure you shot .jpg photos? Is it possible you shot Raw photos?

  • What ver. of CS3 Camera Raw will work with the Nikon D5000?

Just upgraded my Nikon D100 with a D5000. Now PSCS3 will not reconize my raw images. Is there anything I can do other than spend money on a new version on PS?

There is not, nor will there ever be, a version of Camera Raw for CS3 that will open your Nikon NEF files directly.  It will be necessary for you to download the latest DNG converter and create DNG (Digital Negative) copies of your raw files.  Then you will be able to open those DNG files with ACR in Photoshop CS3.  The last version of camera raw that was created for Photoshop CS3 was version 4.6.

  • My Nikon D5000 Develop defaults

Greetings. I recently had some time to address my growing dissatisfaction with how Lightroom was rendering files shot with my D5000. Some similar Google results offered a variety of opinions on how Adobe camera profiles tend to be hit or miss. After a brief look at the DNG Profile Creator I decided it was far too technical an approach for my needs, and I have no good reason to alter the Camera Calibration profile. So I took the advice to alter my Develop module defaults. (Develop menu -> Set Default Settings...)
In my opinion the following settings create NEF/DNG renders that are equal or frequently better to the JPGs produced in-camera, which is what I need as a baseline to begin my editing. With this camera I tend to shoot people under studio lights at ISO 200-800, so this is tweaked for that environment.
Your mileage may vary of course, but I hope it is of some use to someone that finds their defaults to be unpleasanty high in contrast.
(Edit: Also here are official version 3 Beta profiles for D3, D300, D700 from Eric Chan. The D5000 is based off the D300 sensor but I don't know how to apply these profiles cross-camera.)
Rather than linking anything, here is the entire text contents of the .LRtemplate file. You can save it to .../Adobe/Lightroom/Develop Presets/ yourself or simply dial in the very few modified settings in the interface.
    Cheers

The NEF module is for the Nikon Camera RAW Still Images. However, if you use Photoshop, you will probably want to download and install the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW module.
As for the CODEC, Video files are seen first as formats, which are "wrappers," and those contain various CODEC's, which are the compress/decompress specs. inside the files. This ARTICLE goes into more detail on them. Those CODEC's might be general, such as MPEG-2, or they might be heavily tweaked, by the camera mfgr..That is why we most often recommend using the camera mfgr's specific version of each CODEC, like the MJPEG CODEC. However, there are other MJPEG CODEC's, and those work for many. There are links in that article for Lead and MainConcept.
When you look at the Nikon utility disc, in Windows Explorer, what all do you see. As mentioned, some camera mfgrs. will issue their CODEC as a separate install (CODEC's install at the system level), or they might install along with the camera's driver, or they might install with some other software on that disc.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Nikon D5000 HD 720p 24fps sequence settings

Hi. Does anyone know what my setup/ sequence settings need to be to edit HD footage I shot with a Nikon DSLR D5000? I've converted the .avi clips to .mov using NikoPro. All the settings I've tried want me to render the shots as soon as i drop them on the timeline. Any help would be appreciated

The trouble with your D-Movie clips is they're in the PhotoJPEG codec within an .avi container. You have to get them into an editing codec that Final Cut likes.
Drop your .avi files into the Compressor program and drag the ProRes422 preset (in the Settings window select Apple -> Formats -> QuickTime -> ProRes422) onto the clips. ProRes422 is correct for this application, ProRes422 HQ is unnecessary. Submit the job.
If you're on a MacPro and you have a lot of of clips look into creating a virtual cluster to speed the process up. With short D-Movie clips I'd stick to about 3 or 4 instances.
The resulting files from compressor will be .mov files with the video in the ProRes422 codec. Now select one of those .mov files and drop a new sequence. FCP will ask you if you want to update the sequence settings to match the clip settings. Select yes. Your sequence settings are now correct and you can play in real time without rendering. Note most sequence setups for 720p24 will be 23.976 frames per second. All Nikon HDSLRs shoot at a nonstandard 24fps, so it's easiest to let FCP handle the sequence settings.
