Nikon D5100 Video Format

Just got a new Nikon D5100 and shot some video over the weekend. When I tried to transfer them directly to the iPad via card reader, the files were found but I guess the iPad cannot playback .mov files. Is there an easy fix to this? Like can I change the file format that the Nikon shoots videos in or is there an app that easily converts these files so that they can play on the iPad? Please help...

I am unsure of you're first question, but there is no app that can change video formats in the iDevice.

  • Nikon D90 Video Format

I am looking at getting the Nikon D90 for a second camera body and that it also takes videos. It uses this format; MOTION JPEG AVI FILES. I am a complete novice re. video. Can anyone tell me if this format will work in Premiere Elements 7 or earlier? I would appreciate any help.

Interesting question Barry. I am also considering the Nikon D90. Unfortunately, I don't have a definite answer to your question.
    Here are my observations:
I have used Motion JPEG 640 x 480 30 fps video files from our Canon Powershot point and shoot cameras in Premiere Elements 3. On my XP PC, I can use the MJPEG files directly in to Premiere Elements. However, when I first convert to DV-AVI using the XP Windows Movie Maker my results from Premiere Elements are slightly better.
However the D90 video is different both in frame size and frames per second: its formats are
    HD 1280 x 720/24 fps VGA 640 x 424/24 fps QVGA 320 x 216/24 fps
So I suspect that using the past (like Canon Powershot) to predict the future (D90) may not work in this case.
FYI - Have you seen this Preview of the D90? http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond90/
When dpreview does their complete review (as opposed to the current preview) they have in the past included samples of the video taken by the camera being reviewed. That sample video can then hopefully be run through Premiere Elements to observe the results.

  • Cannot import MOV Video off of Nikon D5100 in FCPX

    Hi.
I just got a new Nikon D5100 wicht is great!. But when I wanted to import some of my videos from the SD Card and then onto my Mac into Final Cut Pro X, it wouldn't open. I clicked on the camera and it opened right up to my Facetime HD Camera. I tried opening archive and then clicking on the SD Card, but it just when back to the FaceTime HD Camera. I really need help because I have a video due in a week and I need FCPX! Please help!

If you are importing directly from the flash card, don't forget to check the "copy" option in the import dialog. Otherwise Final Cut will just point to your memory card and as soon as you eject it, you will have disconnected media.
When you import from camera's that support using the Camera Import function, FCP X knows to do the copy (you don't even get the option), but it doesn't know when you use File->Import.

  • Is iFrame video format any advantage in FCPX?

Does the ability to shoot video in the iFrame format offer any advantage in Final Cut Pro X for importing and editing?
Now or in the future, might it make importing & editing in FCPX easier & faster in any manner?
While browsing the specs of the new Canon SX40, I noticed its video capabilities offer iFrame as an option. It’s on my short list at the moment and I’m wondering if iFrame is a potential big plus, or not?
I am shooting with a Canon standard definition camcorder now and I want to upgrade to 720p, so I’m considering new cameras. A Nikon D5100 (no iFrame option) would be as high up the price scale as I could possibly consider. Got to have a fully articulated LCD too.
I’m learning FCPX to make better videos for personal use and some YouTube granfaloonery.
    Thanks for your attention.

It will help you import the footage into iMovie faster.  It is an iMovie specific format Apple came up with, but is of no use to FCP X, as it will still need to transcode to ProRes, which FCP X will do in the background on it's own.  If nothing else, you know you can record in a format Apple products (iMovie, FCP, Aperture, iPhoto, QuickTime) will recognize.  So, answer it, with iMovie for sure and with FCP X not so much but not a bad thing either.

  • Encoding so H.264 .MOV is playable by Nikon D5100

I want to be able to create a .MOV file in the trial version of Premiere Elements 9 that will playback on my Nikon D5100.  It is my understanding that the D5100 creates H.264 format with Long-GOP (Group of Pictures) using B frames (bi-directional differencing between frames).  It gets very good compression and quality.  However, no matter what encoding choices I make, the PE9 movies I make end up 10x the size of the D5100 source .MOV.  As a simple test, I take a D5100 sourced .MOV (1080p 30fps normal quality), put it on the timeline, then try to Share it as a Quicktime .MOV configured to be similar to the source material.  No matter what video encoding choices I make, the end result it about 10x the size of the source AND the Nikon D5100 doesn't like the format and won't play it back.  Any guidance as to how to get the .MOV I'm creating to be the same size and quality as the source AND have the D5100 recognize it and play it back?  I think I'm missing something obvious, or are there undocumented limitations of PE or the trial version that are thwarting my efforts, or is high compression/high quality H.264 abilities thwarted by technology licensing issues.  By-the-way, the point of this is to be able to show my daily movie segments to my travel partners while in-the-field/on trips.  If I can get this to work, I think that D5100 will show a better/smoother video out its HDMI port than my laptop will with a Nvidia Geforce G105M.  Be gentle with me as I'm a tad new to video.

Like many video formats, there are dozens of different flavors and compression settings for H.264/MP4s, including AVC (which itself has a number of flavors). It's going to be pretty tough to figure out exactly that camera is producing.
You can try opening the video in G Spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) and seeing if that gives you specs you need. But even then it's hard to say if you'll get something that gives you the EXACT size file that camera produces.

  • Nikon J1 video playback in iPhoto is jumpy?

Where can i find a driver or update to have 100% support of video files from Nikon J1? The video plays but jumps around when playing in iPhoto. Do i really need to convert MOV files? I would prefer not to do this.
    Thanks

What is the format of your videos?
iPhoto and Aperture don't support  all video formats and frame rates. For best results use the frame rates and sizes listed in this table:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4025
    For example:
    Nikon J1, mov, H.264,
    Pixel size: 1920 x 1080, frame rates: 60, 30
    Pixel size: 1280 x 720, frame rate:60

  • Lightroom 3 and Nikon D5100

    Hi,
I just recieved my Nikon D5100 today and it looks as if Lightroom doesn't recognize raw for the camera.  It worked perfectly with my Nikon D5000.  Does anyone know when Lightroom will support D5100 raw and if there's a workaround until it's officially supported?
    Chris

    I'm in the same situation.
    Failed options:
I could use NX, but then I would end up with jpegs or tiffs, neither of which is my permanent storage format (DNG), nor a viable alternative (not being raw).
I tried to install Adobe DNG converter, but it prompted me to install their app manager, which then said it couldn't install DNG converter. (DNG converter 6.0.3.79 does not recognize the D5100's NEF files.)
Preview and Quick Look don't recognize them yet; no OS X support.
    Read-only:
Xee does open the D5100's NEF files. (Version 2.2 is current from http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/xee.html .) It is designed for viewing, not editing; I use it for my first preview/cull step (sometimes).
The GIMP also opens the D5100's NEF files. (Version 2.6.1 from http://www.gimp.org/ , which says it uses UFRaw 0.17 which in turn uses DCRaw.) However, no option to save as DNG.

  • BlackBox Instead of Picture when Importing Photos from Nikon D5100

We had been able to import photos (and HD movies) into iPhoto '11 in versions before 9.4.3 (720.91) from a Nikon D5100 camera SDHC 16GB memory card with no problem. In the current version however (apparently after the latest update to iPhoto '11) after importing the contents of the SDHC memory card with Nikon D5100 photos and movies, some of the photos (in raw file format) appear as black boxes in iPhoto after the import.
    So Note the following:
iPhoto ' 11 Direct Import - does not work
Direct import from Nikon D5100 SDHC (Lexar) memory card results in some photos appearing as opaqe black boxes in iPhoto '11
Nikon, Inc. Nikon Transfer app - works to get files into folder in Mac OS X
using the exact same memory card on the exact same computer (MacBook Pro) to import those same photos and movies using the "Nikon Transfer" application - ALL of the photos import into the MacBook Pro in the same raw file format.
Indirect Method of getting Photos into iPhoto '11 (never had to do this before but this works)
after getting the photos into a folder in the MacBook Pro file system using the "Nikon Transfer" application from Nikon, Inc. - iPhoto '11 is able to import those raw NEF files from the folder in the MacBook Pro file system into iPhoto '11 with no problem and those same black box pictures (observed with direct iPhoto '11 transfer) now look fine after doing an "indirect transfer" as described above ( memory card --> Nikon, Inc. "Nikon Transfer" application --> folder with raw NEF photos in MacOSX --> iPhoto '11
Has something changed in the latest version of iPhoto '11 to prevent import of Nikon D5100 photos in raw-NEF file format?
    thanks

Still don't know about the hot pink color issue but I did find I needed to download the Nikon Transfer2, not the first version.  Newer Nikon DSLR's require the second version and the disk is included with the camera purchase.  Select the option to have Nikon Transfer2 open when attaching your camera or data card to computer, then go directly to iphoto to import... don't bother importing to the View NX2 unless you plan to use it as an edit tool, etc.
So, I believe it's not iphoto's issue.... maybe it's Nikon wishing you to use their program but if you really must use iphoto, you just need to go a little out of your way.  ugh.

  • Lightroom 4.1 - I Cannot import Nikon D300s video / movie files into catalogue - Can you?

    Hi,
I can import all of my movie files produced by other cameras into my Lightroom 4.1 catalogue, I have the most recent version of Quicktime installed and obviously as I can import other camera model movies it proves that the basic Lightroom services and processes are working fine.
When I try to import the movie, first on the import module it says 'unable to create preview' and then it states, 'this movie file contains no video frames'.
I had gone back to Lightroom 3.5, but have since realised this version doesn't publish my movie files to flickr if they are >30Mb due to the way the Lightroom 3 Publishing module craps out on memory usage.
I know the D300s records movies using the J-MPEG codec, but I'm not sure if this is a problem with the codecs installed on my machine or whether Lightroom does not support this codec?
Before I waste another few days on trying to resolve the D300s import issue, can anybody else preview and import their Nikon D300s video files into Lightroom 4 or 4.1?
    Thanks,
    Simon

  • Missing Proxy shows after updating OS10.10.3 supplemental and Pro Video Formats 2.0.1

About 1 hour ago I quit FCPX with a project that was nearly finished.
Then I updated MacOS 10.10.3 supplement plus Pro Video Formats.
Then I opened the project again I was working on before.
Now all the clips, the multicam's, the project file show "Missing Proxy".
The relink command finds the looked for clip, but the clip does not show up. neither does it relink all the other clips.
    "Missing Proxy" all over.
How can I get this project back to working order?

    it was set to proxy
I have proxy files for my media
I changed to original/optimized: now about half the clips show up. source: Canon XF305
What about the rest? Source: Nikon D800, Nikon D7000 some are missing, Panasonic is  "Missing"
missing is also a Logic Pro File and a sound file from a audio recorder

  • Stuttering playback from Nikon D5100 on Pro CS5 - 5.5?

Video from my Nikon D5100 DSLR at 1920x1060, 30 fps, plays back with a stutter in premiere, but not elsewhere (Quicktime and Windows Media Player) I've made sure to upgrade to the latest version of Premiere Pro and the problem persists. Searches on here haven't led to much; this thread from May mentions the same problem from a Nikon D7000 (predecessor at 24fps) and says a temporary fix is to rename .mov files to .mpg. This didn't fix the issue.
Any ideas, or do any other users of the D5100 have the same issue?

    Tmon89,
If you have not tried adjusting your "playback resolution" setting (right-click to access this in playback window) yet to try and resolve your issue, try that. This setting is provided so that if you do not have enough hardware power for the layers of media that you have on your timeline, you can request for less to be displayed. Note too, I have seen an instance where "full" playback resolution actually worked better than 1/2 resolution. Can't explain it, but that's why I said "try changing it" instead of simply "lower it"!

  • AVCHD (GF2) vs H.264/Mpeg4 (Nikon D5100)

    Hi friends,
    1) AVCHD isn't the same codec to H.264/Mpeg4?
    i. Both offer the same quality?
ii. Which codec most convenient to a FCP user?
iii. Nikon D5100 vs Lumix GF21-what do you say in term of Video Mode?
Thanks for contributes your precious opinions!

I shoot video with the Nikon D7000, you can find my recent posts in another thread. No idea what a GF2 is but using any adapter to put one lens mfr's glass on another camera compromises the quality of the lens Buy lenses for the specific camera.
The whole idea of using prime lenses to shoot video is based on image sensor size and the inherent physical properties of the point of focus. The depth of field and the resulting bokeh effect are directly proportional to the resulting circle of confusion, highly theoretical optical characteristics, easily researched.
Mish's points are excellent negatives. Here are few more:
    1. Focusing is not just important, it's beyond critical.
    2. Today's autofocus SLR lenses have stupidly and inappropriately small focus runs which means the point of focus is easily overshot. Just letting go of the focus barrel can screw up your focus. Look for classic, old style lenses that will work on your modern camera.
    3. You cannot see focus in the viewfinder when in live view mode, which is stupid but technically unavoidable, and you cannot rely on the LCD display. You must have a viewfinder magnifier hood which elevates the cost of your rig by $200-600.
    4. You simply must understand the relationships between f-stops, shutter speed and ISO and it is my experience that only about 1% of the goofballs shooting "video" on DSLRs have the slightest idea what these properties mean let alone how to control them and how they interact.
    5. You need to know how to use a light meter and not rely on the camera.

Hi All,  I am looking for conversion software that will allow me to convert a ppsx file to a video file on OS10.5.8.

Hi Klaus1, Thanks for your response.  I can open and view the file without difficulty.  My issue is getting into a video format that I can upload to a Website for client viewing.  All the conersion products I can find are for a newer OS then 10.5.8.  I am working on a deadline of midnight tonight-and cannot upgrade that quickly.  So What I need is a conversion program that will still run on my OS

I have an ATV first generation, I had to redo my windows profile and now ATV is not syncing all my movies from iTunes. It says that ATV does not support the video format from movies I downloaded from Itunes.

I've had this happen with a whole bunch of files over time. Usually it's a disk timeout - it just took too long for iTunes to start streaming the file to the Apple TV. Sometimes it's that the file has been moved/deleted/'lost' as Alley_Cat describes. Sometimes I think that the file has too high a bit rate to play on the old Apple TV or the audio isn't suitable for it.
