Many thanks for that. I've never shot RAW before and am new to DSLRs generally so don't know the relative difference between formats. If I have to convert RAW  to TIFF to be able to use Lightroom, will it have been worth me shooting in RAW at all, or will I do just as well staying with the highest quality of JPEG I can get from the camera? My camera is 24.2M megapixels

  • Nikon D5500 generates RAW files as .NEF which Lightroom 5 won't read. How can I convert these on a Mac with Yosemite?

I have tried the Adobe DNG converter (v8.7.1.311) but when I choose the folder where the photos are, it shows an error reading "The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files". I cannot find any other software for Mac which claims to be able to do this. Can anyone help?

  • Why won't lightroom open my raw (NEF) files? I shoot with a Nikon D5500.

I just did a photoshoot and lightroom is telling me that my files are not supported by lightroom. it says lightroom is up to date. I have a cc subscription and can't use lightroom. please tell me there is an easy fix

Support for the Nikon D5500 was released with Adobe Camera Raw 8.8 on March 19th 2015. There has not been a corresponding release of LR 5.8. The expectation is that LR 6 will be release in the near future but there has been no specific release from Adobe.
In the meantime LR users have been advised that they can make use of the Adobe DNG Converter 8.8 which they can use to convert the NEF files to the DNG format and import these files for use in LR 5.7.1 or other earlier versions.
See  the link below for the official communication.
Lightroom Journal | Tips and advice straight from the Lightroom team.
Quote from the communication. "Camera Raw 8.8 is now available as a final release for Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.  DNG Converter 8.8 is provided for all Lightroom customers and Photoshop customers using versions of Photoshop older than Photoshop CS6."
It is clear that there will be no further versions of ACR version 8. and unlikely to be a version 5.8 for Lightroom. We have to await Photoshop CC 2015 and LR 6.

  • Why can Lightrooms not view my NEF(RAW) File taken from my Nikon D5500?

I have a Nikon D5500 and viewing a JPEG is fine. If I change my file format to NEF(RAW) when importing files lightroom cannot view them. It gives me a box to check for updates but I have to most recent version. Ver:5.7.1.
A few weeks ago I used my friends Nikon D5300 and the RAW files were perfectly fine.

It's a new camera model that was released in that "hole" between Lightroom releases. But you can download the DNG converter version 8.8 and convert that NEF files to DNG. I know, it's a Band-Aid fix. But it will work in the meantime while we wait for the next Lightroom update or upgrade.

  • When will Nikon D5500 be added to Camera Raw or Lightroom

When will Nikon D5500 be added to Camera Raw or Lightroom

The camera raw updater is only for updating the plug-ins that Photoshop uses.  If you want to work with your D5500 in Lightroom you need to download and install the DNG Converter 8.8, and create DNGs from your NEFs, one folder at a time, and then those DNGs will open in the older LR version.
For LR to open the D5500 NEFs, directly, it would need to be LR 5.8 or LR 6.0 and we don’t have either of those, and I expect we’re not going to get LR 5.8, because that would delay LR 6.  My thinking is that ACR 8.8 and the DNGC 8.8 were stop-gap updates to give people a path forward for new cameras while everyone waits for LR 6 and ACR 9.

  • Nikon D5500 and Lightroom  RAW file

Just got my Nikon D5500 and Lightroom will not recognize the RAW file.  Does anyone know of an available update?

AT THIS TIME, the only way to use D5500 RAWs is to use the software supplied by Nikon, convert them to TIF, and import those into Lightroom.
At some point in the future, Lightroom should be able to import the D5500 RAWs directly, but no one knows when that will be. Possibly 2-3 months, but I have no inside information, I could be totally wrong.

  • Nikon D5500 RAW files recognition

When will Lightroom recognise the new Nikon D5500 RAW files? The DNG converter does not support the D5500.

Thank you, I realise that now. I have a few further questions as I have not had to do this before:
What is the best way of learning of the update when it is eventually released? Here on this forum?
Can I register anywhere to be sent an alert about the update release?
Will it be an email link to the updated software for Lightroom which I will follow?
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • Neither LR nor PS CC will recognize raw files from a Nikon D5500 camera, although it is indicated as being supported.

I have been using Photoshop CS5 with no problems.  I just bought a Nikon D600 which is not supported by CS5.  I heard that Lightroom 4.2 will support it so I shelled out $199 for that product.  Now I see that if I import a raw file into LR, work on it and then try to send it to PS for more editing I can't do that.  I am told I have to spend another $199 to upgrade to CS6 because Adobe has no plans to have CS5 support my camera.  This is a rip-off.
    Uh...no...you are wrong.
CS5 can open D600 files if you convert the D600 files using the free DNG Converter 7.3 RC which is available at labs.adobe.com (note DNG Converter 7.2, ACR 7.2 and LR 4.2 offer preliminary support). LR 4.3 and ACR 7.3 RC (both are release candidates hence the RC category) can deal with D600 raw files directly. If you process the D600 file in LR 4.3 RC, you can open that image in CS5 if you render the image in Lightroom 4.3 RC.
Yes, Adobe will no longer update CS5.x because Adobe started shipping CS6. It's Adobe's policy to cease support for versions of Photoshop that is no longer shipping–Adobe is now shipping CS6. It ain't a rip-off, it's the standard Adobe policy to support CURRENT customers, not former customers.
You really need to catch up bud...software and new cameras change all the time. Buying a new cameras generally means you'll need to update your software. Foolish you for not knowing that. All of this could be mitigated if Nikon and Canon (and the other main camera brands) adopted some sort of raw file format standards...sadly, they don't which allows people who fail to grasp the reality of the situation to blame Adobe.

  • Just purchased Nikon D610. tried to import 3 images and got this message: The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. How do I fix this frustrating problem. Have been using Lightroom for years also Nikon products without any prior

How do I import images. Have a message that says: The files are not recognized by the raw format suppot in Lightroom. Am using a Mac version 10.9.4. the import is from a new Nikon D610. Am using LR 4.4 Please help Adobe is useless as a support.

Each camera must be supported explicity and your LR version is years older than your camera.
According to Adobe's Camera-support page, you need at least LR 5.3 to work with your D610 NEFs in LR:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
If you don't want to upgrade to LR 5, or can't due to your OS being too old, then it might work to use the latest DNG Converter and create DNGs from your NEFs, which should open in LR 4.x.  You can find the DNG Converter here:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.

It's not a "wrong" error message - it's true, as far as it goes, and it's completely unrealistic to expect error messages to be fully diagnostic - they're a starting point.
    Not wrong?
Let us have a look at the error message:
"The following files were not imported because they could not be read"
This clearly gives the user the impression that there is a reading error where you want to copy the files from. Is that the actual error?
No, the actual error is that the file could not be written at the destination.
It is possible that it is not factually wrong because Lightroom first make a failed copying attempt without giving an error message, then still assumes that the files have been copied and tries to import them, and THEN makes a failed import attempt from the destination and gives the error message. But that would never be anyone's first guess when they experience that error message.
A much better error message would be: "The following files were not imported because they could not be copied to the destination folder."

  • When does Photoshop cc supports the raw files wich are coming from the Nikon D5500 ?

    Hello,
When does Photoshop cc supports the raw files wich are coming from the Nikon D5500 ?
Iam a very happy user of Photoshop, specially for my raw files... i find it frustrated that i can't work on my files for now..

The D5500 was just released and Adobe is working on support. Cannot say how long for sure, but it should be within a month or two. Meanwhile, you could shoot in NEF+JPEG and set Camera Raw to open your JPEGs as well. Not as much data, but will be better than nothing..

  • Is the Nikon D5500 supported with Adobe Lightroom 4.4?

Is the Nikon D5500 supported with Adobe Lightroom 4.4? Thank you.

No it isn't. In fact, it isn't supported by ANY version of Lightroom at this time. DNG converter 8.8 supports the model, and you can use it to create DNG copies that can be used in Lightroom 4.4. But the D5500 will never be supported in Lightroom 4.4. Support will probably come in the next update or upgrade.

  • I just bought Nikon D750. When will we get Lightroom RAW support for that particular type of camera?

Does anyone yet know when RAW files can be dowloaded to Lightroom from Nikon D750?

    Dear all,
Thank you for your fast reply. I´m just downloading that newest version 5.7.1 and test it with the RAW files.

    What is N-OS?
For the camera raw problem, every new camera has its own raw format and ACR must be updated to include it. That hasn't happened yet for the D5500, so you'll just have to use the Nikon software till Adobe gets the info and releases an updated version of ACR. It's not unusual to be in your situation if you buy a camera model that's only been out a month. You just have to wait a bit.
