Nikon d60 or d80?

i cant decide if i should go with the d80 or the d60. i have looked very close at both and they come pretty close in some ways. i have found a great deal on the d80 for $599 w/2 vr lenses so i might go with that option and get more for my money. if any one has an opinion please let me know which one to choose. i have yet to go to a store and try them personaly.

If I had to choose between those two, I'd go D80. Unlike the D60, the D80 has a built in focus motor to drive older non AF-S lenses so you have more lense choices. Sometimes you can find a nice AF-D lense literally half the price of its AF-S version from someone who is 'upgrading'. The D60 (and D40 series) needs AF-S lenses to auto focus. Non AF-S will fit and work other than auto focus on a D60 if you dont mind manually focusing. Sigma (lenses with the built in motor are called HSM) and Tamron (just started) are making lenses that have built in motors for Nikon also.
A D60 is basically a entry level dslr. A D80 is a step above it. D80 will have more features than a D60.

  • LR3 Tethered Capture Support for Nikon D60 and D80

I was very excited when I heard that LR3 had finally added tethered capture. So I sat down today to cover the LR tutorial at http://www.photoshopuser.com/lightroom3/. As I watched, I set up my Nikon on my tripod with flash, just beaming with anticipation. I connected to my computer via the USB cable and opened tethered capture in LR3. The 'heads up display' opened as advertised, but it showed 'No Camera Detected'. So, after visiting several forums and Adobe Help, I found that my Nikon D80 was not supported for tethered capture.
    Dang!
Does anyone know if Adobe is going to add support for the D80, as well as the D60?
    Thanks.

Doubtless Adobe knows, but this is a user to user forum, so I wouldn't hold your breath for anything formal from Adobe here except "eventually". Maybe.

  • Nikon D60 & D80 tethered in automator

It is so hard to find info on tethering that I wanted to post what i found out today from a pro rental source.
The camera actuated from the computer but not the camera when used in automator "take photo".

  • Nikon D60 - Bridge CS3 cannot write Metadata

{This is a follow on to thread: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6704d/1}<br /><br />It appears that Bridge CS3 is unable to write some of the IPTC metadata to pictures taken with my Nikon D60.  When trying to change some metadata in a file I get the message "There was an error writing metadata to <filename>"<br /><br />Strangely this does not happen with all metadata fields. For instance, I can change the IPTC Core "City" or "Location" and the change works just fine. However, if I try changing IPTC Core "Creator" or "Copyright Notice" I get that error.<br /><br />I have confirmed that the problem is with the D60 pictures, as it occurs in two different machines (Both CS3, one Vista, one XP).  Both machines are able to edit other camera's pictures OK.  All files are in JPEG format, I have not tried anything in RAW format.<br /><br />I did find in a completely different forum (for BreezeBrowser, which I've never used) a reference to a similar problem.  At least in that forum they mention that the Nikon D60 uses a "different" way of storing metadata which leads to the problem.  BreezeBrowser will release a new version to address this issue.  <br /><br />Any idea what the solution might be for Bridge and other Adobe products?<br /><br />Thanks!<br />Carlos

I don't have my camera with me at the moment, so I'll have to shoot in NEF later. However, just for kicks I downloaded the latest version of ACR and checked against my current version. It appears to be the same (same size, same timestamp). I even replaced it, per the instructions with the download. No love.
As mentioned in my original post, the issue is limited to a few fields, in particular "Creator" (XMP) or "By-line" (IPTC). I went and added new data to this field using ExifTool. I added it to both IPTC and XMP fields since I know Bridge synchronizes them. The change took, and Bridge noticed it. But now Bridge will not let me modify any XMP/IPTC metadata. It won't even let me change the rating of the file!
I'm really at a loss here. I've searched through other threads and haven't found anything to enlighten me.

  • Photoshop CS4 will not read Raw files from Nikon D60. [was: No automatic updates for my PS CS 4  on windows (for reading .Nef files)?]

    Hi
I have been using PS CS4 for several years.
Yesterday, I went to PS CS4 help and selected "updates", but I get the message "There are not updates available at this time; Please note that some updates for the following products cannot be determined at this time: Adobe Updater".
I need the updates because I just purchased a Nikon D60 and my Photoshop does not read the .NEF files produced by the camera.
    any idea, please?
    thanks

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Do you really mean the Nikon D60 which shipped in 2008? Was it purchased secondhand?
The Nikon D60 was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw 4.4.
Photoshop CS4 ships with Camera Raw 5.0 so it can read D60 NEF files out of the box. No updates required.
If you do mean the D60 then something else must be going on. e.g. are you using Nikon software to transfer files from camera to computer?

  • Nikon D60 support?

    Hi,
just got a demo Nikon D60, did some NEF shots, but Lightroom 1.3 doesn't recognize them?
So Lightroom 1.3 DOESN'T (yet) support the Nikon D60 files or am I missing something?
I can open them in CS3 Bridge.
    TIA,
    Mat

The update should be relatively soon, but if you are counting on it within a week to complete a review you may get a reality check. Adobe updates camera support in ACR about 4 times a year, but not on an absolute schedule as I recall. That is quite reasonable, as the industry goes.
There is always the Nikon software, which will do a decent but slow job converting to Tifs, which you can then use virtually anywhere.

  • Tethering w/ a Nikon D60

I am unable to tether my Nikon D60 to Aperture. All of the options under File > Tether are grayed out. Any suggestions?

I recently had the same problem... it has a surprisingly simple solution... what you need to do is just set up a new project (Command-N) with this new project selected go to the tether options ( File > Tether) and it should let you start a new tether session (provided your D60 is connected)
    Hope this helps

  • Nikon D60 RAW (NEF) unknown file format

I just got my Nikon D60 and would like to use Aperture 2.0 to open NEF for processing but the application reports it as an unknown file format...
Will Apple add support for the D60 or am I SOL?
    Thanks!

With every new camera, all software developers have to add something to their code to recognise the new raw format. Adobe as the biggest kid on the block is often the fastest but even Adobe might take a month or two (or three very occasionally), since they don't release a new version of ACR every week.
As soon as Adobe supports it, you can use the free Adobe DNG converter to batch convert your images to dng files and then use them in Aperture.
And yes, it is almost a given that Aperture (and OS X) will support the D60 in a few months at most.

  • Using Aperture with Nikon D60

I would like to hear from someone who has been using a Nikon D60 with Aperture (2.1). AND who uses a Mac with system 10.4.11--not higher. I am unable to import RAW files from the camera no matter what I try. I get the red "unsupported image format" screen every time. No problem importing JPEGs.
Does anyone out there import RAW files to a D60 successfully?
    Thanks.

Problem solved. Thanks to a suggestion from D Anderson, I downloaded a system combo update from Apple -- MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.11Intel -- and it solved the problem.

  • Nikon D60 recognized.

I have a MacBook, v10.7.5, and I am would really like to connect my Nikon D60 camera to it. When I plug it into my computer through a usb cord it doesn't show up. Not in finder or iPhoto.
I have the software the camera came with in the package, Nikon Transfor, but my computer won't open it now because it's a powerpc app.
1). Am I missing anything I sould have or be doing?
2). Should I just buy a sd card reader?

If you look in System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info...> System Report) and select USB, does your camera appear here?
    Best of luck.

  • Nikon D60 RAW + JPEG

I have a Nikon D60 which stores the image as a RAW + JPEG. When I import the photos in iPhoto there are always double because there is the RAW version and the JPEG version. Is there a work around for it, so there is only the RAW version which is imported, some scripts maybe?

Yes, set your Camera to shoot only Raw or only jpeg.

  • Please Suppor the Nikon D60

    Hi,
Any ETA on the new Nikon D60 .NET RAW file support?
    Mike

From the FAQs at the Adobe Camera Raw Forum:
b Q: When will the new update of Adobe Camera Raw be released?
A: Adobe cannot comment on unannounced products, however, it is expected that ACR and DNG converter will be simultaneously updated 3 or 4 times per year (i.e. every 3 or 4 months).

  • PS Elements 10: Can't access Nikon D60 and D7100 NEF files

I need to convert/edit about 20 NEF-formated image files from D60 and D7100 Nikon cameras to publish them in a newsletter.  Last year, I downloaded an update that contained conversion solutions for the D7100, but that download appears to be no longer working.  Please recommend solutions, preferably short of buying new PS software.

    First Thanks!! for replying.
The message title says PS Elements (version) 10.  I uploaded 7.4 last year, and it worked with the D7100-generated images, but it’s no longer working.  As for the ACR, I’m afraid that I don’t how to determine what’s loaded.
Meanwhile, I apologize for using the wrong forum.

  • Nikon d90 or d80?

im having a really hard time deciding to go with the d80 or d90. does aynone have an opinion on which you think is best. i want to make an investment that i'll be happy at making just like all us want to do. i plan on taking action shots and wildlife and some indoor too.

    Hi pictureperson,
Both of these cameras should work great for your described shooting situations, but if you can afford the added expense of the Nikon D90 I would go with that camera. The Nikon D90 is the more advanced of the two, and I don't necessarily mean the more complicated. The Nikon D90 takes higher resolution images, and has the added bonus of being able to capture true HD video until the memory card is full. This was the first DSLR to be able to capture HD video, and being able to have interchangeable lens capability on an HD camcorder is a feature usually reserved for professional level camcorders that cost much much more than this camera. I hope this helps!
