Nikon d70 phot information

iPhoto appears to display much of the meta data from my imported images from my Nikon d70. However, it does not display program/exposure setting. In the exposure field, it only says "not defined". Other images from other cameras seem to work. Nikon says "iPhoto is not suported". Can anyone help?

Keegan,
Support for the Nikon D70s was not added until ACR 3.2 or 3.3. There is no way that ACR 2.4 will allow you to open those files. However, if you download the latest version of the DNG converter (4.2 as of the writing of this note) it should convert your NEF files to the DNG format. Then, if you have ACR 2.4 installed correctly, you should be able to open those DNG files.
It isn't necessary for you to use the corresponding version number of the DNG converter. You should always endeavor to have the latest version of the DNG converter. It will convert the raw files from the largest number of different camera models to the DNG format. And those DNG files will work with any version of ACR clear back to 2.4.

  • IPhoto5 w/PS Elements & Nikon D70s RAW PROBLEM

I hear that iPhoto 5 is supposed to work seamlessly w PSE3. I have a problem: new imac, new PSE3 install (w/ Adobe ACR RAW plug-in update).
PSE3 will see & access my RAW NEF files just fine from my Nikon D70s. But iPhoto will NOT download them. When I use my CF card reader, OS X correctly identifies the source (Nikon D70s); I can see the files to view them, but when I click the button to download the files into iPhoto, the machine churns for a bit, and then gives me a pop-up with the RAW files all in a temp folder, and it informs me that they are of an "unknown file type" and it won't download them.
This new Imac I brought home yesterday, and the only thing that has been installed on it (other than the 12 new mac updates) is PSE3, and the Adobe RAW update, which, as I said, works just fine in Adobe PhotoshopElements3.
Please don't tell me it's all because the camera is a D70s, and not a D70. They are the same identical RAW files.
any help would be much appreciated. I love my new iMac. (my first mac!!) No more windows for me.
    Thanks!

    Har! Hi Lori!
Yes, I not only found ONLY the D70 "supported" officially at the Apple website, but also, a call to technical support had them scratching their heads over this issue, and they surmized that yes, a simple "s" in the end of D70 might be exactly what is giving iPhoto fits... ( go figure- it's the same exact file format!) seeing that D70s tag (vs D70) just throws iPhoto a curveball. You'd think it would be more "intelligent" than that. Oh well. Guess I have to wait for an iPhoto update to use my RAW files w/iPhoto...
Maybe I'll just get a different software photo album. I need one now.
    Thanks!

  • Nikon D70 wrong image size

I haven't figured out why Aperture is telling me the size of the images coming from my D70 are 3024 X 1998 px instead of 3008 X 2000 px. Does it stretch the images ? Until it does it right I don't trust it and don't dare to translate all my photos into Aperture… Thx for your help!

to clear things up: it has nothing to do with cropping or export or whatever - aperture simply doesn't work with the actual (true) pixel size.
the nikon d70 and d70s produce raw images at 3008 x 2000 effective pixels. nikon capture, picture project, adobe LR and photoshop open these files in these correct dimensions.
aperture displays and exports these (untouched, uncropped) files as 3024 x 1998, therefore stretches the width by 24 pixels and reduces the hight by 2 pixels. same happens if a nef is "opened in external editor" from within aperture (as jpg, tiff or psd) or exported at 100% (in any format).
this error is produced by the mac os and the way it handles these raw files (iPhoto shows the same WRONG pixel information and so does the os file info as well as "file info" in apple preview).
apple - we need a solution.
for those who are curious and don't have a d70 or d70s, i have uploaded a test nef for you at http://www.eleven01.com.au/aperture-d70s/DSC3255NEF.zip

  • Pictures from Nikon D70 appear darker in iPhoto 5.04

Everytime I import pictures in iPhoto, they appear too dark, certainly compared to the D70 "on-board" screen.
I would even say, I have to rework them everytime to get a proper lighting.
The D70 is configured to sRGB mode.
Has anyone an idea ? I did not find any "match profile" function in iPhoto, although this clearly looks like a profile mismatch

You may also wish to check whether the Nikon D70 includes an excessively large MakerNote in its exif information (I believe it may be one of the cameras that does). If the MakerNote is tens of kb (as on my Pentax Optio), rather than a few hundred bytes like most cameras, then when iPhoto 5 includes this in the Library.iPhoto, it can slow down iPhoto 5 to an unusable degree once you have thousands of photos.
If you have Graphics Converter, the browser mode will show the size of the MakerNote (they call it Manufacturer Note). Alas, it doesn't seem to show the iso speed.

  • Wrong image size with a Nikon D70 and another issue

    Hi everyone!
I'm a photography student and I switched a few weeks ago. I've been using Adobe Lightroom under Windows for months, now I'm trying Aperture.
I own a Nikon D70, which is a 6 Mpix camera. The resolution of the pictures should be 3008x2000 pixels. With Aperture they are 3024x1998... It's *neither the good ratio neither the native resolution* of the camera.
    What should I do?
Also, although I set up my camera in MTP mode, it *won't work in tethering mode*. It came back from the Nikon service center with a Nikon D70s firmware, but it should work as well, right?
    Thank you for your help!

Strange! I had tried with the camera in PTP mode a few days ago, it wasn't working. Trying again now and it works! I must have done something wrong. Thank you anyway!
Then I tried again the Search tool, I didn't noticed the date range restriction on the first time, now I can see a few threads about that "problem". Although I'm really not satisfied with this "issue", it seems to be this way by design and not a bug.
Thank you everyone for your help!
(may I delete this thread since it has no interest for other people?)

  • RAW NEF files imported into Aperture from a Nikon D70 are dark

I imported one roll of images straight from the CF card from my Nikon D70 into Aperture.
I also imported them into Nikon PictureProject. (the current application I use)
All the NEF's in Aperture are darker than the NEF's in PictureProject. Has anyone else seen this issue?
Also, any NEF that I have previously edited and saved in Nikon Capture Editor, do not display any of the changes when imported into Aperture. Interesting that the Finder shows the thumbnail correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks, Scott K.

I've imported a few of the NEF files I've gotten from my D2X, and for the most part, they look fine. A little darker than when displayed in Adobe Bridge and ACR, but not that much darker. This is probably just the way the image converter is interpreting the RAW data. A couple of minor levels adjustments for me, and they look fine.
As for Aperture not "seeing" the changes made to a RAW file in Nikon Capture. That may be due to the way Capture applies its changes to the file. If when you make a change, Capture simply adds the adjustments to a side car file, etc., and doesn't change the original RAW file (which it should never do), then Aperture is only reading the original RAW data. The side car info is not understood by Aperture. At least not now.
This is pretty much the same way ACR works.

  • My Macbook is not finding my NIkon D70s.  I do not see it in the finder and my Adobe Bridge is not recognizing that I have a camera hooked up.

In the past I have downloaded pictures from my Nikon D70s.  This time it is not showing up in the finder and Adobe Bridge does not see it as a device.  I have the camera hooked up and I have it turned on like I would normally do when dwonloading pictures.  I think the last time I had it connected to the computer I may have turned it off before ejecting it properly.  Wondering if that has anything to do with my problem and if so how can I fix it now?

Launch Image capture and see if it shows up there.

  • Cannot import RAW files from Nikon D70

I have an iMac G5 running Leopard 10.5.2. When I try to import to iPhoto '08 from my Nikon D70, I get a message that says "The volume for DSC-xxxx.NEF cannot be found." The program then stalls and I have to force quit to get out of it. This happens whether trying to import photos from a card reader or from a desktop folder. I've tried re-installing both iPhoto and NIkon software to no avail. Any suggestions?

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Wrong white balance in NEF files (Nikon D70 RAW)

    Hi
I have a problem with NEF files: I shoot them with white balance set to Cloudy (6500K), however, in lightroom the white balance is shown as 5450K.
There is a color shift because of this:
When I leave the white balance at "As shoot" the image appears OK, however, changing white balance to "cloudy" which is supposed to do nothing, makes the image warmer, obviously because Lightroom believes that the image is shot at 5450K and converts it to 6500K, e.g. makes it warmer, while the image is already 6500K. Changing the setting to, say, "shadow", makes it even warmer.
Of course I may try to correct the WB "blindly", disregarding the temperature value, but that's annoying.
The camera is Nikon D70, unpatched.
Did anyone have the same symphtom?
Is there any fix or a workaround?
    Thank you,
    Gennady

When the camera was set to "Cloudy" (6500K) then switching to "daylight" (5200K) makes the picture cooler, switching to "Shadow" (7500K) makes the picture warmer. This is how the camera behaves and this is how Nikon's NEF convertor behaves. Obviously, when the camera was set to "Cloudy", then switching between "As shot" and "Cloudy" should make no change, because "As shot" means "Cloudy", because the camera was set to "Cloudy".
Now, for some reason, Lightroom believes that the picture was shot with a manual settings of 5450K. I don't know why it believes so.
And thus, switching from "As shot" to "Cloudy" makes the picture warmer (although it should leave it unchanged), and switching to "Shadow" makes it even more warmer, far warmer that it should be at "cloudy" setting.
What I expect is that switching from "As shot" to "Cloudy" in the Lightroom would give the same colors as switching from "As shot" to "Cloudy" in Nikon's NEF convertor. And apparently it does not work this way.

  • Nikon D70 NEF in Camera Raw 4.2

    Hi there,
I'm new to the forum. I have two questions. I have searched the User Forum and Adobe site in general in hopes of finding answers, but could not.
First question. Is Nikon D70 NEF compatible with Camera Raw 4.2?
Second question. When I open my Nikon D70 NEF files in Camera Raw 4.2, all the photos look extremely over exposed. The highlights are completely burned out, to the point where I can hardly recover them.
I tried taking a dual-mode photo (a NEF and JPEG captured at same time with one shot). When I open them both in Capture 4.2, the NEF version is still way over exposed and the JPEG version is normally exposed. The exposures look so completely different, yet all the exposure settings are exactly the same.
Any ideas what could be causing the problem?
Thanks so much for any insight you can provide.
    Penny

The results of my conversion, based on the image you uploaded to
http://download.yousendit.com/D47FE36E76602801 seem to be exactly the same ones that were discussed here as recently as yesterday:

The "overexposed" phenomenon you are seeing must be a monitor profile and/or color management issue.

  • RAW-Datei von Nikon D70 in PS CS einlesen

    Hallo,

    Danke!

  • MakersNote files and the Nikon D70

Having followed with interest the threads here regarding the problems people are having due to the MakersNote files associated with some cameras I thought I'd go straight to the horse's mouth and see what Nikon had to say.
    Dear Peter,
    Thanks for your e-mail.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to reduce the size of the MakersNote files.
    Contact me, if anymore query.

Oh, well ... I suppose we'll just have to hope that Apple come up with something. In the meantime I think I'll try someone's suggestion of trying to get rid of the files before iPhoto gets it's hands on 'em !

Unfortunately, you will not be able to reduce the size of the MakersNote files.
If you care to send me an email with a copy of a Nikon D70 photo (in jpg, not raw) I can test whether Nikon are correct about not being able to remove the MakerNote. ericlindsay at mac.com

  • Nikon D70s images turn green

i found a very strange behaviour in A3 - when "reprocessing" old Nikon D70s Raw files, they turn green'ish. both the preview as well as the thumbnails. this happens with every D70s Nef file.
once i quit and restart A3, they are rendered correctly.
this only happens to these old nef files, all newer files (from D300, D3 and D3x) work fine.
    any ideas?

Not sure what your version of PSE is but if it is PSE13 then you may need to update your product by going to
    Help >> Updates
This ensures you get the latest updates to support all known cameras in the market.
Old products may not have the latest updates so you need to use DNG converter for which there is a wonderful video that is self explanatory:
