Nikon D700 Over exposure issue

After shooting some outdoor shots last week, I found most all of the shots as about 1/3 to a full stop over exposed on my Nikon D700.  I did some research and everyone seems to point to the camera.  As a fairly recent LR convert, I went back to Nikon Capture NX2 to see if I found the same over exposure, and DID NOT.  I hate to jump to conclusions, but it seems like LR is having problems compared to Capture.
I am interested if anyone else has done the same test and found the same results.  I LOVE LR and used it a lot recently for concert performance work as well as portrait work, but these bright sunlight shots just seemed too much for LR.
Thanks!

I suspect your problem is due to tone curve mismatches. Let's say you are shooting some people shots and in-camera you are using the Portrait picture control.
1) When you review your photo in the LCD and look at the histogram, the JPG (yes, even if you shot RAW) displayed there uses the tone curve (and other settings, like sharpening, hue, saturation, etc.) in that Picture Control. Add White Balance (WB) into that mix.
2) Similarly, when you review your RAW file in either ViewNX2 or Capture NX2, the software reads the raw data *and* the Picture Control and WB information to render the image and corresponding histogram you see in the application.
Now, if you move over to Lightroom, the Adobe default camera profile will likely (most assuredly, actually) use a different tone curve and color profile. The result? A different histogram that will show either over or under-exposure when compared to what you saw in-camera or in the NX2 software, depending on the particular mismatch.
The solution? Either use one of the provided Nikon-like profiles (for instance, my LR 3.4 has Portrait), or create your own to match the Nikon's built-in (or even if you had it, your custom) Picture Control. Keep an eye on White Balance, too, as the incorrect WB can push or pull your histogram. For instance, an overly warm WB can clip your reds, when a corrected WB wouldn't.
After years using ViewNX2, exclusively (plus PSP X2 for final editing), I've just (this weekend!) switched to a LR3-CS5 workflow. Part of what kept me away from Adobe products for so long was the reluctance to give up Nikon software's "full insight" into the in-camera settings. In the end, I decided that this histogram I see in my camera is ficticious, anyway, a by-product of one possible interpretation of the RAW data. Perhaps Nikon is better qualified to interpret that RAW data, but based on the quality and robustness of their software, who knows?
Anyway, long story short: match your tone curve and WB, and you should get similar results. My early experimentation with D700 and D7000 photos this weekend, when I did a couple of quick cross-checks of what ViewNX2 gave me vs. LR3 with the Portrait control/profile indicates my results are reasonably close. As with all things, YMMV.

  • Over exposure downloading from Nikon D300 to lightroom 2.3

Following upgrade to Lightroom 2.3 when images are downloaded from my Nikon D300 (raw or jpeg) they are all overexposed after quickly appearing in preview.  How do I correct this.  Is this a camera or software problem
    David Neal

I had the same problem with a D700.
Applying the Standard profile will correct the colors but not exposure.
Another thing to check is that you have not unable Advanced D-Light on your camera. Automode is the worst case because you don't even know how much over exposure is set!
This camera option is a tricky one: it overexpose your photo and make a built in camera process to recover details in the over/under exposed zones.
LR is not able to read this information (proprietary info in the NEF raw file) so the photo is over-exposed.
One way is to use the exposure LR cursor (-0.25 can simulate a light ADL..) but you will never have the same photo because Nikon processing is different and specific for each over/under exposed zones: sometime using the LR exposure brush is necessary on this zones (darken a sky for example).
Antoher thing is to desactive the Nikon ADL. You will then have nearly the same picture between LR Raw and your embedded Jpeg, you only need to  apply the Standard or Neutral LR profil to correct the colors.
Then, if you want to recover some details in the over/under exposed zones, you  can add a LR exposure brush on these zones. The good thing is that you control manually what Nikon ADL do automatically...

  • Nikon D700 color issue

    Hellow,
I am shooting with a Nikon D700, and my problem with aperture 3 is that when I upload the pictures Aperture will oversaturate or over boost the colors (specialy green). I've already set the Hue boost to 0 but that doesn't work. I am shooting in RAW (NEF), can someone help me? I am realy frustrated about it
I think it would be a problem with Camera RAW from aperture...

This is just too good to miss so i must put my pennyworth in and stir with wooden spoon.
A raw file is not an international standard as are jpeg's. A Standard is needed.
Camera sensors do not record colour. May be a bit of a surprise to some folkes!
Colour is totally subjective. Just like spelling. Therefore the definition better is with the person or people who think it is, for whatever reasons they think it, especially when it comes to photography. Some people say jpegs are best and i am sure they are for them, i say raw is better, do you disagree?
White Balance can not be set by numbers, between differing raw formats when all the companies involved are trying to discredit and rubbish the opposition and cannot even agree a standard format for their own products. How can we expect competitors to share information and why should they? They probably think they share too much already. Even if they did there would be widespread disagreement about what is better. Where can i get a white balance meter so i get it correct? Oh i'm forgetful, my camera has one built in but now i know it's not accurate what am i to do. It has not been an issue in the past so maybe something is going my way for a change.
Red has always been a difficult colour to reproduce and ever since colour photography was invented, it even gave problems in Orthochromatic photography. Blue in Panchromatic so no surprise when we want full colour.
How many people use a dark room these days? You really should. The ambient light will have a greater effect on your WB setting than you may imagine, maybe even more than the difference in the numbers talked about here. My screen at the moment looks white, as i put the tungsten light up the screen turns blue and then yellow as i ramp it down and if i leave it on or off it soon looks white again. By the way what colour or colours are the walls of your room.
Go in to the Shooting Menu of the D700 then White Balance, press right toggle twice and toggle again to change the WB. Toggle up or down to change the colour without affecting the White Balance.
If this does not resolve the issue go back to good old B&W that will and a good one knocks the spots off colour.
By the way you can have any colour of white except black and neither are colours and there is no difference between the two without the odd photon.
An old screen may be passed its useful life. There may be some gain in checking the screen profile it may need calibrating. You can do this several times and save each one, and if you are getting it correct there should be no difference between each one. This will not solve anything but you then know you are seeing the colours of the screen as intended, as these change over time. Allan

  • Does any1 hav issues with not being able to send pic from the camera roll. I've already had issues with over exposure that the new update fixed but it left me with this issue.

Since getting my iPhone 5 I've had camera issues. To start with it was over exposure, the camera was flashing too early and leaving me with dark pictures. After a failed reset I visited the apple store, where they told me it was a known problem and apple were working on a update to fix the issue and it was just a
waiting game. Once the update was available I did it immediately and the problem seemed to be fixed. I've now noticed that from the camera roll I carnt send a picture to mms. It gives me the option but the screen completely freezes after I've chosen it. The only way to access my camera roll again is to completely close the camera roll down and reopen it. The strange thing it it will let me send it as an email and upload taught to Facebook etc just not as an mms. The other strange thing is if I go to msgs and add a photo I'm successful but if I try to edit the photo I want to send 1st then I get the same issue as the camera roll. I also have issues with the shutter taking ages to open. Is anyone else havin these issue before I go back to the apple shop. A complete reset hasn't worked

  • Nikon D700 White balance importing issues

    Hi Guys,
I am using a nikon d700 with Lightroom 3.2 If I shoot tethered, the correct white balance appears and gets loaded in Lightroom, but if I import them after the shoot, from the card, it loads a completely different white balance value and I have to go back and correct them one by one. I am not using any profile, just leave it on the standard Adobe version because the Nikon profiles are significantly reducing the quality on raw file. Does someone have an idea what I am doing wrong to be able to load the correct white balance during importing?
    Thanks

Are you shooting RAW? If so there is no WB embedded in a RAW file, you set the WB in LR. Setting "As Shot" and a calibration profile that matches the camera setting (if one exists) will usually closest to the wb embedded in a jpg produced by the camera processing.
You may want to check out the FAQ, this one is pertinent.

  • Can't import RAW files into iPhoto 6 Library from Nikon D700

For whatever reason I am unable to import RAW files from my Nikon D700 into my iPhoto 6 (version 6.0.6) Library. I can import JPEGs from the D700, but it's no-go with the RAW files. When I attempt to import the RAW files I get the following message:
    "Unreadable Files
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)."
Can anybody solve this mystery for me?

I presume that the economically-priced Mac Box Set containing OS X 10.5.6 Leopard, iLife '09, and iWork '09 would be the way to go. Do you concur?
Well that's the cheapest way to do it. You could, of course, buy a new Mac
Do you feel that my 20" Intel iMac--details listed below--would have any problems handling the upgraded programs?
It will have no problems with the updated OS or applications.
'm uneasy at the thought of upgrading my operating system, but I presume that chances of running into problems are much less than if I were upgrading a Windows OS. In case a problem arises my entire hard drive is backed up with a 1T external hard drive using SuperDuper software, but I prefer not to encounter a situation requiring me to use it for restoration purposes.
The key to any update or upgrade is to make sure that you have a good working back up. That way, should anything go wrong, you have a quick way back to where you started.
My tips for upgrading the OS? Disconnect the disk with the back up and all other peripherals when you do the Upgrade. Pop the disk in. Do a standard Upgrade. (There are some folks who swear that you should wipe your HD and start over from scratch before you do, but, frankly, that's overkill. I've been upgrading Macs since 1992 and never had a problem.

  • Raw Images (Nikon D700 NEFs) suddenly turn unsupported

    Hi there,
for some of my managed Nikon D700 NEFs I start geeting an 'unsupported image format' error. I worked with those files a couple of months ago and everything was fine, no errors. So, the problem must have came up recently. The files wont show up in Preview neither but open fine in Capture NX2 which brings me to the assumption, that it is an OS X raw compatability issue.
I browsed through the related discussions but couldn't find a way that resolved the problem. What puzzles me is the fact, that obviously only few people are experiencing similar issues. I'm afraid, that something might be "broken" in my system installation. To double check this I would like to provide one of my unrecognized NEF files:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/1sx5bsr794xvbmj/_DSC7035.NEF
If this file works for you, it's not an Aperture issue, but a single problem on my (few) machine(s). The answer to this would be of great help in finding the right fix. Any feedback is highly appreciated! Thanks!

    Thanks Leonie, Thanks Jerry.
    Leonie,
I flipped through my library. It seems that the problem started first with pics, I imported March 2011. Prior imports look fine. (Interestingly it started right after an air trip. But if the security scans somehow damaged my cards and subsequently the pics, why would you be able to open them...? )
I can't find anything which could be special about the relevant files: In fact I sometimes shot a series of pics of the same subject in a row. Some work, some are unsupported. The filenames I didn't change (standard out of camera format "_DSC####.NEF", file system is Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) btw.).
I tried all of the 3 troubleshooting steps of Aperture several times. I tried repairing permissions for the whole drive. I also tried importing directly from camera besides using a card reader, both, into existing and new libraries. Importing pics from iPhone and an old Lumix is ok (but these are not raw...).
I will try a different user account and report back.
Many thanks again to all for your help.

  • Nikon d700 tethered with lightroom3

I am interested in shooting with my D700 and lightroom 3 tethered.  Is it possible for the image to be recored both on the card and on the tethered computer?

I like to keep my file numbering sequential and unique, so when I shoot tethered, the camera doesn't count it as an actuation. Is there a way around this? For example, I have my camera set to coninuous file numbering. I'm at DL3_6553. If I shoot tethered, say 100 shots, and then go back to shooting untethered, my next fimage number is DL3_6554, not DL3_6653. How do I get my Nikon D700 to click over the 100 tethered shots? Thanks

I'm getting some purple and green blotches (mostly purple) with Nikon D700 raws when using the "Camera Standard" profile. This happens a lot during sunset-ish shots. The problem goes away when I select the "Adobe Standard" the profile.
I just tried ACR 6.3 RC and the problem still exists. is this a known issue?
Would be happy to share a raw + screenshots if needed (currently on a relatively low bandwidth connection)

  • Cannot use the Tether Feature w/ Nikon D700 in Windows 7 Pro 64?

Just upgraded Lightroom from 2.7 to 3.0, then to 3.3. Am using a Nikon D700 with Windows 7 Pro 64bit.
Windows does see the camera, Lightroom does not see the camera. This same camera and USB cable do work fine on my MacbookPro snow leopard. i have searched the net but have not discovered a fix for this problem.
    HELP!!!

Found the answer to this problem. The CF card in the D700 must have no images on it. I had three images on the card, and, after I deleted these, Lightroom sees and fires the D700.

All hosting services should be compatible with iWeb — but if the hosting service offers a choice of WIndows servers or Linux servers, choose Linux.
Some recommend this hosting service — particularly for its support:

I have Lightroom 1.4.1 and I just started shooting the Nikon D700.  I cannot get Lightroom to read my new raw files, help...  Is there a plug in or update I can get?  I can't afford new software after new camera and new lense!

Lightroom 1.4.1 does not support native (NEF) files from the D700 because the camera didn't even exist when it was released. To get support you have two options: upgrade to Lr 2.x (paid for upgrade) or convert your NEF files to DNG.
DNG converter 5.4 can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/downloads/ (see right hand side of page)

  • Till now Aperture worked well in mavericks, "suddenly?" the import of raw files from Nikon D700 is no more supported, only jpg's are accepted. Any idea what happened?

Aperture (3.5.1)  worked very well in Maverick (OSX 10.9). After having worked on pictures, "suddenly" messages poped up saying that "his os not a supported format" and the thumbnailpicture became black. Since then Aperture does no more accept the import of the Nikon D700 raw format (NEF); omnly jpg is accepted.
I'm very puzzeled, can you help?
    Thanks,

Thanks, Felix. A tiny bit of RAW finetuning such as sharpening also helps.
But I also just discovered several other weird and unpredictable effects:
image viewer => right click on image => menu appears => another click on image => menu disappears and image is displayed as rotated by 180 degree
image viewer => right click on image => menu appears => edit with plugin => image is displayed as rotated by 180 degree => plugin opens => cancel plugin => image is rotated to normal again
another image got flipped horizontaly somehow.
    or weird effects like this:
Something must be seriously wrong on my Mac.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    You can't.
The D700 is not supported for RAW at this time on iPhoto or Aperture. You're going to have to use somethign else. It's one of the perils of being an early adopter. And this is a User-to-User forum so, no, no one here knows what timeline if any Apple have for adding support.
