Nikon D7000 FCP 7 settings

Hi.
I am a professional photographer so can talk about f/stops and shutter speeds and ISO all day long but Video Codec and fps are all something very new. Please excuse my novice status but I would like help in preparing my first big video project shoot on a Nikon D7000.
I would like to use the camera's highest setting which is:
Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixel 24p (23.976 fps)
How would I prepare my files before importing them into Final Cut?
I am having trouble deciphering the discussions. Some say just import the file right from my card reader and others say the file needs to be converted from the native H.264 to Apple ProRes (though which exact ProRes setting seems to be up for discussion too!)
In the Audio/Video Settings of FCP there is a list of "Sequence Preset", "Capture Preset", "Device Control Preset", ect. I suppose I really need advice on what to set these preferences to.
I'm on a Mac v10.6.7, FCP 7 and I really would like to keep the 1920x1080 HD size from my Nikon D7000. Any help would be MOST welcomed

I have watched the video tutorial which was very informative on log and transfer. Thanks for the tip.
Here are two sources of information I have found out tonight which have helped me greatly.
#1 After you convert the Nikon D7000 H.264 to Apple ProRes, you DO NOT need to use Log and Transfer. You can just import them into FCP.
#2 There is a short little video tutorial on how to import Nikon D7000 footage at this link:
http://www.fcptips.com/import-nikon-d7000-footage/final-cut-pro-video_654ae1749. html
Thank you to all who helped me today!

  • Nikon D7000 LR4 Camera Raw color issues

    I just upgraded my camera from a Nikon D70 to a D7000.
Problem: When I process the RAW /NEF files with Adobe Lightroom 4 the color is terrible. By that I mean, the images look dull, dark and have no pop. The coloring is not even close to what is displayed on the Nikon camera screen.
When I use Nikon View NX: The software which is pakaged with the camera produces an image which is, or almost identical to the image on the camera after the photo is taken.
I like the funcionality of lightroom better than ViewNX, so what I have been doing is processing with ViewNX and then exporting to a TIFF.  Opening up LR4 and then importing and cataloging.  This process is a pain and time consuming.
I also have found LR3 does a better job than LR4 at processing the images.
Is there a way I can tweak or download corrected ACR settings to match my Nikon D7000.

I have figured out myself the profile correction problem for my Nikon D7000 NEF Problem. It almost match to the one in NX2 or even on camera LCD.  the following is what I have adjusted in my LR4
    Brightness +1.00
    Contrasts +28~33
    Shadow +40~55
    Black -25
Don't Forget change the Profile setting on Camera Calibration under the Develop mode to match the what you set on your camera. I always shot on Standard mode, therefore I set the Profile to Camera Standard.
The following is the way I figure it out.
    1.  I imported the photo under "Zeroed" at Import page under Develop setting > Lightroom Genaral Present > Zeroed
    2.  Open one of the imported picture on Develop mode
    3.  Scroll down to Camera Calibration change the profile setting to match they one you set on your camera, in this case I choose Camera standard.
    4. Under the Camera Calibration>Process you will see 2012(Present), changed it to 2010, and change it back to 2012 (present again)
    5. You will notice that the develop setting automaticly change to the following (Brightness -1.00, contrasts -33 and black +25) Let say this is what lightroom did to your picture( from Nikon D7000 NEF)
    6. and then Change everything back to " 0 " will you find your picture nearly close to the one you saw on NX2.0 or Nikon LCD
If your found the step above is hard to follow, please just change the Brightness +1.00, Contrasts +33 and Black -25, and dont forget adjust a bit of shadow as well.
for the people who dont know what Nikon done to Nikon D7000, please dont be expert to say "you dont know RAW".  please read more reviews first before helping people who are new to RAW or even stuck on RAW.  This forum is helping people with our knowledge, is not to make people need help to get more confuse.
For Nikon D7000 user.... Remember turn D-Lightning off.... this is one of the problem will cause LR4 change your tone to more darker, especially on portrait photoshot. Hopefully Adobe will realease the new update soon to match the new system inside Nikon camera.
Please note that the step above only Apply for Nikon D7000 and Lightroom 4 only. And it is not 100% correct to what you seen on your camera, at least is 80~90% Match!!

  • Nikon D7000 problem - Elements 5.0

    Hello all
I've been having some problems that just started recently - I am able to open and edit my photos from my Nikon D7000 just fine in Elements 5.0, but when I come to save them it gives me the famous mystical 'cannot save due to a program error' message. I tried going into the Appdata folder and renaming the settings and all that but I still have had no luck - Elements will let me edit photos from other sources, but not off my D7000. Anyone have any idea what to do? I'm coming up empty on this one.
    Thanks
    Brian

    Hi Brian
Make sure PSE5 is up to date e.g. that you have installed the 5.0.2 patch.

  • Noticed that my NEF files from Nikon D7000 camera are noticeably different in LT4 vs Nikon software?

    Hello,
Noticed that my NEF files from Nikon D7000 camera are noticeably different in LT4 vs Nikon software. Read where folks are adjusting setting in LR4 for Nikon camera, but need help in how please. Also, perhaps there is a better way?
    thanks,

There is now another way, dunno if you'll consider it better or not :
ISO Detailer now has infrastructure for supporting camera settings emulation.
    Implemented so far (Nikon only):
    * Picture Control Name (e.g. Neutral, Vivid, ... ) -> Camera Calibration Profile.
    * Active D-Lighting -> Lr basic adjustments.
If you want other stuff, you'll have to come up with it yourself, by editing a table in lua text format (or supply the information for me to do it).
Reminder: Ottomanic Importer can do this emulation during import, ISO Detailer is for doing it after import.

why I am having problems tethering my nikon d7000 to lightroom 4?

Are you serious. Fine, I have no idea what markguisadio2 exact issue is, but him stating that he has tethering issues with his D7000 to lightroom 4, sounds pretty close to my response "I have the same problem, with Lightroom 3 and 4. Lightroom never detects the camera for tethering. Works fine to detect for importing, but not once to tether."
I was merely stating that I have the same issue with my D7000, that it will not tether to lightroom.
But thankyou for your help in solving my problem
We are all users, just like yourself. We are not Adobe technical support. In order for us to give you any help that will be of value, we need your help. We need to know your OS, how much RAM, other information about your computer system, what you have tried, exactly what happens when Lightroom "won't recognize your camera" or "tethering doesn't work." It would be nice to know if there are any error messages, if you have tried adjusting settings in your camera, etc., etc. Nobody here is trying to be smart when they ask for these details. It is the way a user-to-user forum works.

  • Nikon D7000 and FCE

Hello, just for starters I am using this process for home video's
    I am new to FCE, and wanted to learn the best conversion settings from a Nikon D7000 h.264 compression to FCE. {for example the simplest way to convert multiple clips into FCE at the best possible quality}
    1. is there a plug in for FCE or a recommended software for this conversion?
    2. I am shooting HD {1,920×1,080 / 24 fps most of the time} I see this is not recommended
    What is the downside for shooting with these other setting {this would be from the... isn't "bigger is always better" side of my brain:}
    HD 1,280×720 / 24 fps
    HD 1,280×720 / 30 fps
    Thank you in advance

    1. You convert to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec. Maintain the original frame size.
    Thanks this is helpful!!
    A. My main concern is the footage I already have is 1920 x 1080 {1080p} is 23.97fps, and how to convert it..... {what does "depending on where you are" change? either 25fps or 29.97fps}
    2. "I don't know is the 720p media your camera shoots is actually 30fps or 29.97fps."
---So are you recommending I shoot in 720P moving forward?
Here all all the settings for the D7000
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Format (.MOV file container)
    1920 x 1080 {1080p} is 23.97fps
    1280 x 720 is {720p} is 29.97fps NTSC, or 25fps PAL, or 23.97 fps PAL/NTSC

  • Shooting with Nikon D7000 the color is awful. Where do i begin?

The clips generated from the recently new Nikon D7000 are very hard to correct. I've been using the 3-way color corrector in FCP for years and nothing seems to work on the nikon movie files. The skin tones are flat and almost gray. the over all color is lifeless. And shadow detail is lost even though the image is largely over exposed. Anyone else having this trouble. Of course I am editing these clips alongside clips from the Canon 5D Mark ll.

I have to be more specific the original Nikon D7000 clips are too yellow and too blue which makes green I can't do anything to make these look good. ahhh!

  • I can't not transfer files in 'log and transfer' of Final Cut Pro. I recorded it in SD card using Nikon D7000 and JVC GY-HM100U.

I can't not transfer files in 'log and transfer' of Final Cut Pro. I recorded it in SD card using Nikon D7000 and JVC GY-HM100U.
I think I need plug-in.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Well, the Nikon D7000 footage cannot be logged and transferred.  There is no plugin for that like there is for the Canon cameras. Nikon never developed one.  So the footage from that camera will need to be converted with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP.
The JVC should work...what version of FCP are you on?

  • Nikon D7000 to Final Cut Express 4 for dummies?

I am a recent owner of a Nikon D7000 and also FCE4 HD. I wish to use FCE to edit the videos I shoot with this camera. I've seen some discussions on how I need to first convert the video clips to a format that FCE can use because it apparently cannot process the .MOV files.
My problem is that I haven't found any discussions that explain what I need to do in a basic, step-by-step response. Please keep in mind that I know nothing about frame rates and all the technical jargon. I just want to know how to get the best results from the camera in order to get it into FCE to edit it. Big learning curve here.
I've downloaded MPEG Streamclip because I've read that I need that in order to convert something to something else, but that's as far as I've gotten...
Please, can someone help to explain this process in simple terms for a dummy like me?

Ok, FCE update done. I read that I should shoot in 1280x720;30fps instead of 1920x1080;24fps... so I switched the movie settings in the camera and shot a sample clip.
So, using the Quicktime Player Movie Inspector, I get the following info:
H.264, 1280x720, Millions Linear PCM, 16-bit little endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
    29.97 FPS
    55.1 MB
    17.06 Mbit/s
    1391x782 pixels
    What now?

  • Nikon D7000 .MOV files in Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5

I recently upgraded from Production Premium CS5 to CS5.5. Initially Nikon D7000 .MOV files used in previous CS5 Premiere Pro project would not play well in CS5.5. Now .MOV files do work in both PP and AE CS5.5. Here are the steps I followed. Not recommending you follow my steps exactly, just providing info for those that are interested.
    1.       Launch Premiere Pro CS5.5 and open previous PP CS5 project, convert project to CS5.5 and rename project file as not to replace previous CS5 project file.
    a.       At this point .MOV files do not play in new project or in AE CS5.5
    b.      Close Premiere Pro and After Effect if still running.
    2.       Using Adobe Bridge CS5.5, batch rename;
    a.       Make copies of original files to new folder location while renaming file extension from .MOV to .mpg
    b.      Let Adobe Bridge finish creating all new thumbnail previews.
    c.       Leave Bridge running in background.
    3.       Launch Premiere Pro CS5.5, let Premiere finish recreating thumbnail previews if needed.
    a.       Attempt to preview existing .MOV file in project. It worked for me.
    b.      Attempt to play sequence containing .MOV files. It worked for me.
    c.       Attempt to play or modify sequence .MOV files in AE CS5.5 via Dynamic Link within Premiere. It worked for me.
    d.      Close Premiere Pro project and AE projects if open.
    4.       Create new Premiere Pro project and sequence
    a.       Import a different Nikon D7000 .MOV file not previously used or renamed.
    b.      Attempt to play this newly imported .MOV file. This worked for me as well.
    c.       The new, previously un-renamed .MOV file also worked in AE CS5.5 for me.
I will perform additional tests but at the moment Nikon D7000 .MOV files are working for me in CS5.5 after initially performing a batch rename in Bridge CS5.5 from .MOV to .mpg and letting Bridge create preview files. Even .MOV files not renamed now work.
An example of Nikon D7000 footage edited with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5, After Effects CS5.5, and Sound Booth CS5 can be seen on my blog, http://stevelandonsmyth.typepad.com/steve-landon-smyths-blog/2011/07/my-first-hd -video-shoot-with-nikon-d7000.html

    Hello,
I see 2 post in this thread from Todd that say they are working on a fix and it should be out soon.  One is from July, the other from August.  It is now Sept 7th and I still see no patches or fixes for any bugs.  I spent 400 dollars on an upgrade, but is this upgrade going to be supported?
This is making me rethink upgrading to the .5's in the future.
It is a minor bug to most, but in that sense it should be an easy quick fix. Am I wrong? Is this really a complicated issue?
I apologize if this comes off like a rant, but thats kinda what it is.  It is not hard to batch rename files, but its a pain to have to relink all those files in PP.

  • Camera Raw for Elements 7 enabling use of Nikon D7000

I use Elements 7 with Camera Raw 4.5 I now wish to edit RAW
images from a Nikon D7000. How do I go about obtaining the r
elevant Camera Raw download for use with Elements 7 which will enable me to view and process
    Nikon D7000 RAW images?

The last version of Adobe Camera RAW that PSE7 will work with is ACR 5.6, and that does not support the newer D7000.
Either buy PSE9, or download the latest DNG Converter 6.3 and convert your NEFs to DNGs and open those with the older ACR.
You can get the downloads for both ACR 5.6 and the DNG Convert 6.3 by going to http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/ and using the dropdown at the top to find Camera RAW for your computer type.  If you update Camera RAW then be sure to use the PSE-specific instructions on the page or in the readme.  The DNG Converter is a standalone program that operates on an entire folder of RAWs at a time.

  • How can I edit a Nikon D7000 .nef file using Photoshop Element 8?

In order to read and edit a picture taken in RAW format by a Nikon D7000, using Photoshop Element 8, what should I do?  Any plug in that I should download?

The D7000 was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw 6.3 which is compatible with Elements 9 or later

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Either upgrade to Elements 12 or use the Adobe DNG converter to convert D7000 Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in Elements 8.
