Nikon D70s images turn green

i found a very strange behaviour in A3 - when "reprocessing" old Nikon D70s Raw files, they turn green'ish. both the preview as well as the thumbnails. this happens with every D70s Nef file.
once i quit and restart A3, they are rendered correctly.
this only happens to these old nef files, all newer files (from D300, D3 and D3x) work fine.
any ideas?

You are not the only one! All my pictures from D700 turn green too....

  • Images turn green in LR2

Several months ago one of the images in a folder turned green when I selected it. I always import files as digital negatives and then create a virtual copy to develop. In this case both the copy and original turned green. Going to the develop mode I saw that the white balance sliders had both moved to the extreme left, but all other settings were unchanged. Resetting did nothing so I manually adjusted the white balance to, what I thought was the "as shot" position, hoping this was a one off event.
All was fine until a few days ago when, as I expanded each dng/copy stack the dng file turned green. The techies at Adobe have been very helpful but unable to find a solution yet. The latest attempt has involved checking the develop history of images in case a preset was accidentally applied to all images, but this has proved unsuccessful. It's possible that, if this was the case, the offending image has been deleted along with its history which cannot then be reversed.
I've also tried uninstalling and then reinstalling L2 and opening it with an earlier uncorrupted file but the images still turn green. Suspecting a virus, I contacted support for my AVG anti-virus product, but they were unaware of any viruses which exclusively target image files and considered that scenario unlikely.
Has anyone else experienced this problem, and been able to rectify it? Three years of photos involved so any suggestions would be well received!

If resetting the image doesn't put white balance back to default As Shot it would suggest that you have somehow saved a new Camera Default. You can do this on a camera model, serial number or even specific ISO value, so it might only apply to a small number of images. Anyway, to check that this isn't the case you should select one of the affected images, switch to Develop module then choose Set Default Settings from Develop menu. You'll want to choose the Restore Adobe Default Settings button. Finally, select all of the affected images and hit the reset button. Remember, to expand all stacks before resetting or only the top image will be reset.

  • Nikon D70 wrong image size

I haven't figured out why Aperture is telling me the size of the images coming from my D70 are 3024 X 1998 px instead of 3008 X 2000 px. Does it stretch the images ? Until it does it right I don't trust it and don't dare to translate all my photos into Aperture… Thx for your help!

to clear things up: it has nothing to do with cropping or export or whatever - aperture simply doesn't work with the actual (true) pixel size.
the nikon d70 and d70s produce raw images at 3008 x 2000 effective pixels. nikon capture, picture project, adobe LR and photoshop open these files in these correct dimensions.
aperture displays and exports these (untouched, uncropped) files as 3024 x 1998, therefore stretches the width by 24 pixels and reduces the hight by 2 pixels. same happens if a nef is "opened in external editor" from within aperture (as jpg, tiff or psd) or exported at 100% (in any format).
this error is produced by the mac os and the way it handles these raw files (iPhoto shows the same WRONG pixel information and so does the os file info as well as "file info" in apple preview).
apple - we need a solution.
for those who are curious and don't have a d70 or d70s, i have uploaded a test nef for you at http://www.eleven01.com.au/aperture-d70s/DSC3255NEF.zip

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Wrong image size with a Nikon D70 and another issue

    Hi everyone!
I'm a photography student and I switched a few weeks ago. I've been using Adobe Lightroom under Windows for months, now I'm trying Aperture.
I own a Nikon D70, which is a 6 Mpix camera. The resolution of the pictures should be 3008x2000 pixels. With Aperture they are 3024x1998... It's *neither the good ratio neither the native resolution* of the camera.
    What should I do?
Also, although I set up my camera in MTP mode, it *won't work in tethering mode*. It came back from the Nikon service center with a Nikon D70s firmware, but it should work as well, right?
    Thank you for your help!

Strange! I had tried with the camera in PTP mode a few days ago, it wasn't working. Trying again now and it works! I must have done something wrong. Thank you anyway!
Then I tried again the Search tool, I didn't noticed the date range restriction on the first time, now I can see a few threads about that "problem". Although I'm really not satisfied with this "issue", it seems to be this way by design and not a bug.
Thank you everyone for your help!
(may I delete this thread since it has no interest for other people?)

  • Nikon D80 images should be bigger than D70??

I expected RAW to give me the choice of larger image sizes for my new D80 compared with the D70 images. Although properties correctly lists the 10Meg of the D80 c/w the 6 of the D70, when it comes to choosing a size of image to open with images from either in RAW, both the minimum (1540x1024) and the max (6144x4085) sizes that it offers are the same for both cameras, each creating 71.8 Meg file size and no discernible difference in quality. Am I missing something here? I expected an increase in size/quality.... Using CS2 fully updated and 3.7 RAW.
    Mal

Yes, i can see your confusion. i think you mean ppi instead of iso,but thats a small point. i also used to shoot medium format, but would never go back. i think what i can do with the d200 is pretty darn close in quality, but i tend to stick around 13x19 these days. not sure what a lambda does, but have you ever tried printing at a lower ppi, like 200 or 300? i think you will quickly come to appreciate all that digital offers, if you are just diving in.

  • Is there a plugin for Elements 12 which will allow me to download/edit raw images from a Nikon D70?

I am currently using a Nikon D70 and would like to edit the raw files. I think Adobe did a Camera Raw plugin for Elements 3.0 but I would obviously like to buy the newest version of the software and need to know whether it will still meet my demands. If not, how do you get your hands on an old version of Elements?

Yes, photoshop elements 12 should open your Nikon D70 camera raw files just fine.

  • My Macbook is not finding my NIkon D70s.  I do not see it in the finder and my Adobe Bridge is not recognizing that I have a camera hooked up.

In the past I have downloaded pictures from my Nikon D70s.  This time it is not showing up in the finder and Adobe Bridge does not see it as a device.  I have the camera hooked up and I have it turned on like I would normally do when dwonloading pictures.  I think the last time I had it connected to the computer I may have turned it off before ejecting it properly.  Wondering if that has anything to do with my problem and if so how can I fix it now?

Launch Image capture and see if it shows up there.

  • Nikon D70s Raw files extremely noisy

I have a bunch of NEF files from my Nikon D70s that look terrible when imported with Lightroom (or Photoshop on the Mac or iPhoto or Photoshop on the PC, for that matter). Here is a screen capture of one of the photos at 1:1 zoom:
    http://solace.stanford.edu/~beers/Photo/lightroom.png
    And another, from iPhoto:
    http://solace.stanford.edu/~beers/Photo/iphoto.png
Note the "maze-like" pattern that is embedded into the image, making it useless except when downsampled and blurred.
Here is the same image read into Picasa (which also apparently reads camera raw files) on the PC:
    http://solace.stanford.edu/~beers/Photo/picasa.png
The pattern is gone and the image is usable.
This is happening on my Mac running Leopard in Photoshop CS3, Lightroom (both using ACR 4.3.1), iPhoto, and Photoshop CS3 on the PC. Anyone have any idea what is going on?
    Andrew

    > I believe only pictures from that particular setting (grey background, grey rug, softbox lights, etc.) exhibited the noise in question
Hold on. Did you use some filter as well? Was there some strong light from the side?
    > you suggest that there are multiple raw images which are combined?
No. I am not sure what you mean, perhaps the two different greens?
The pixels sites have filters over them: green, red or blue. They are arranged in a regular pattern; in case of the D70 this pattern consists of two rows of two pixels each. The first row contains a blue and a green pixel, the second row starts with a green and then a red.
If you download this image and view it in at least 600%, then you see this arrangement. (This image is very greenish, mainly because half of the pixels is green, while only 1/4 of them is red and another quarter is blue. This is a non-demosaiced image.)
    http://www.panopeeper.com/Demo/Andrew_DSC_0014_crop.tif
The values of green pixels, which are "diagonally neighbours" should be close to each other on the relative uniform areas, like the face, but they are not. You can verify that on this image as well if you increase the magnification even more, so that you can navigate over the pixels; however, the numerical differences you see here are much reduced from the original differences.
Anyway, I was referring to the green pixels in the alternating rows, once beside reds, once beside blues; they responded very differently.

  • Poor Nikon D70s RAW conversion

    Hi,
Some RAW conversions from a Nikon D70s are very poor. A shot of pine trees and bare deciduous trees against blue sky shows 'green squares' artifacts at the tips of pine-needle clusters and in various places on the twigs of the bare trees. Also, there is a white halo around those twigs that are outlined against the sky.
It's the conversion, not the hardware, because Adobe Camera Raw doesn't show any of these artifacts.
Apple MUST get this part right if they want Aperture to succeed. I'm not even a pro photographer, but it's enough to make me hold off from using the software, at least for RAW.
(Of course, these artifacts also appear in all Apple RAW-handling products such as iPhoto and Preview.)
    Gareth

    Hi All,
Out of curiosity, I browsed Apple's example Tibet images to find one with nearground foliage, looked at it closely, and what do you know: same problems!
Look here and tell me you don't see it...
    http://web.njit.edu/~russell/D70s.html
Apple's images are from a Nikon D2X, so perhaps it's a problem specific to Nikons/NEF, rather than the D70s (or MY D70s) in particular.
I haven't noticed any issues with other colors, so most of the images look ok -- it seems to be problem with how certain types of green highlights are being scaled. But I take a lot of landscapes, so it's definitely a problem for me.

  • IPhoto 08 - my photos turn green

After importing and editing some photos, they turn green. Just about any editing will do it, ie: cropping, adjusting, etc. It doesn't always do it.
I can revert to the RAW original, but I've lost all the changes and even if I try again, they are still green.
They look like the original in the thumbnail, but when I open a pic, it turns green. It actually expands in the original, but quickly turns faded and green as if an opaque green film has been placed over it.
If I mess with it too much, I lose the picture and get an exclamation mark where it used to be.
I am using iPhoto '08 with a Nikon D40X. I have the image set as RAW (which gives me a .NEF suffix)
    Any ideas?
    Barry

I have no idea what's happening to your iPhoto.
    The result was 189 events
So, is this more or less than you had before? How are we supposed to know?
    ... with unrelated photos
    unrelated to what?
The photos were dated, but not always from that date.
So, the photos were dated incorrectly? Or they were dated correctly but in the wrong Events?
No library except the original library.
If you used the Rebuild command in iPhoto Library Manager then there are two libraries. Or do you mean in the iPhoto Window? If so, under Library there are two headings: Events and Photos. Are you saying they are not there?

  • External screen turns green?

I've had this setup for a while now.. A 12 inch PB with a CRT 17 inch monitor connected to the PB through the "mini dvi to vga" adapter..
Now this is the problem: since a few days the image on my external screen is green.. It's not totally green, i can see pictures and programs but it's like the color balance isn't right.
First I tried to change this through display calibration -> didnt help
Then i tried to manually adjust the color balance through the screen display settings -> didn't help..
So I thought my crt monitor was broken. But then I connected my PB to another external screen trough my "mini dvi to vga" adapter. And I had the same green screen. Then I knew it wasn't my crt monitor that was broken but it had something to do with my output signal..
Fortunately a friend of mine has a nice 20 inch tft display. I tested the connection again with the "mini dvi to vga" adapter and got the same green screen. But then I connected my PB to his 20 inch screen through a "mini dvi to dvi" adapter and the green was gone! So it couldn't be the output singal of my PB..
So i figured my "mini dvi to vga" adapter must not work properly somehow. I don't know how it could have broken. It happened just like that. I turned off my PB, and when I turned it back on the external screen turned green. I didn't do anything weird with it..
Could this be? That the adapter is broken? Or do you guys think there might be something wrong with the output signal after all?
    Anyone encountered something similar?

So I went to an apple store today, and explained them my problem. We tried a new "mini-dvi to vga" adapter but still the external screen was green!! Also, when using my adapter that I supposed was broken on another PB the output singal was perfect! So as it turns out, it's my PB thats not working properly..
The guys at the store said it must be somthing with the motherboard.. I just don't think I can miss my PB for more than a few days!! :P

  • RAW NEF files imported into Aperture from a Nikon D70 are dark

I imported one roll of images straight from the CF card from my Nikon D70 into Aperture.
I also imported them into Nikon PictureProject. (the current application I use)
All the NEF's in Aperture are darker than the NEF's in PictureProject. Has anyone else seen this issue?
Also, any NEF that I have previously edited and saved in Nikon Capture Editor, do not display any of the changes when imported into Aperture. Interesting that the Finder shows the thumbnail correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    Thanks, Scott K.

I've imported a few of the NEF files I've gotten from my D2X, and for the most part, they look fine. A little darker than when displayed in Adobe Bridge and ACR, but not that much darker. This is probably just the way the image converter is interpreting the RAW data. A couple of minor levels adjustments for me, and they look fine.
As for Aperture not "seeing" the changes made to a RAW file in Nikon Capture. That may be due to the way Capture applies its changes to the file. If when you make a change, Capture simply adds the adjustments to a side car file, etc., and doesn't change the original RAW file (which it should never do), then Aperture is only reading the original RAW data. The side car info is not understood by Aperture. At least not now.
This is pretty much the same way ACR works.

  • When using Firefox certain videos play but the image is green and distorted.. help?

Firefox 3.6.8 and 3.5 (I downgraded to see if that would solve the issue)
    Windows 7
    Intel Core i5
    Flash Player: WIN 10,1,53,64
When using Firefox certain videos play but the image is green and distorted. The image turns into lines and sometimes it half of the screen of the video. Examples are streaming MLB.tv video and some vimeo videos. The odd thing is that it isn’t all Vimeo videos. Is this a flash issue?
The issue does not happen with Internet Explorer which leads me to believe this is an issue with Firefox. I downgraded to 3.5 and the issue still persists.

  • Apple menu apple turns green on hang?

My Mac has become incredibly unstable lately. I can't seem to go a full day without requiring a hard shutdown. An application will hang (iTunes, Safari, Mail, anything) and while I still retain cursor control, all I get is a spinning beach ball. The Force Quit window will not even come up. My only options are hard shutdown via power button, or SSH into the iMac and shutdown via CLI.
During this time, I noticed that the apple in the Apple Menu turns green, at least some of the time. Has anyone else experienced this?

actually today i had not a green but yellow apple appear in a system that seemed to be hanging and this is why i've been reading discussions today.
i had let the battery run down overnight to calibrate. while i wrote down what happened i'm not sure i have all this in the proper order but the battery indicated it was on reserve power (i THINK i had already attached the power cord as i assumed the computer was totally asleep....no sleep light pulsing...
i am confused as to the steps i took and what happened (despite my notes immediately thereafter) but basically these things happened: i had to restart the computer and when i did the first gray screen instead of showing a wheel had a horizontal bar with smaller bars moving across left to right (as if loading) then a blue screen briefly and then my desktop and on this desktop the apple icon was YELLOW....i couldn't get the airport to engage and went over to the apple to restart the computer at which point a transparent box appeared in the area of the apple icon and in it were small black marks that i associate with computer language...or whatever). i couldn't get the menu to appear below the apple icon but was able to bring up the dialogue box by using the apple, option and escape keys but instead of force quit as an option only relaunch was offered but that would not work and in fact the transparent box that had been at the apple icon now was over this dialogue box. i believe at this point i shut the whole system off with the power key and waited a minute or few, came back and started up again and now everything went as usual on start up including the return of the black apple that 10.5.2 seems to have. i believe i also saw a blue apple in there briefly at some point or maybe it was green but another than the yellow but it more flashed than stayed.
so not quite what you had but something mysterious in any case just so you know you are not totally alone. if anyone has any idea as to what this yellow apple is about and what went wrong on this calibration journey i'd love to hear....also as to what the other oddities are about....the transparent code box breaking through over the desktop image!! that's scarey!!!
